It's no secret that Americans do things a little differently from the rest of the world. But, as the first European colony to win independence, they've had lots of time to form the unique identity we associate with them today. So let's take a few moments to celebrate all the quirky and ridiculous little things that make the USA what it is, even if we still fail to understand them.

When the United States broke away from the rest of the European world in 1783 following the American Revolutionary War, a cultural shift began that is still developing today. Though the lands we now know as America mostly share a history of British occupation, tea and crumpets have long been replaced by coffee and donuts. America has given the world countless gifts, such as rock music, groundbreaking cinema, and New York City - in fact, it's probably the most culturally recognizable place on Earth. Still, for those of us on the outside looking in, the United States sometimes seems like a bit of a circus.

Scroll down to see some of America's funniest moments on Tumblr and how the rest of the world reacted. Don't take it personally, though - we've still got love for Yankee Land! (h/t)

At 18 you can be married, drive a car, go into huge debt, vote, and die for your country but you're not responsible enough to buy beer. *Face Palm*

Germans: Duh, this Autobahn section has a 130 km/h speed limit. Americans: wow, this freeway allows 100 km/h!

People in the U.K., so tolerant, & yet they make fun of ALL Americans for a title change by a book publisher & agreed to be the author.

Nope, it shouldn't have an apostrophe at all. The apostrophe makes it possessive and since neither one American or all of them are possessing 'too dumb', it is just 'Americans', minus the quotes, but you know what I mean. Grammar. Lol.

Actually the real reason is because the "philosopher's stone" refers to alchemy; the philosopher's stone was a reagent used to turn any base metal into gold. The publishers thought that the term "philosopher's stone" would not be understood in the US, and so changed it to sorcerer. That's far from Americans not understanding what a "philosopher" was. I expect that most of the English speaking world doesn't know what the "philosopher's stone" actually referred to, either.

Ehm, your comment implies that Americans are too dumb or too lazy to google-search "philosopher's stone" to learn what it is...

This is very sad. I cannot believe that philosopher is not a well known word in US vocabulary.

We know it. I think it was changed because they thought americans would think something involving a philosopher would be too boring to read. They were trying to spice it up.

Half-blood refers to the fact that he's only half wizard blood, not that he doesn't have enough blood

Correction: Americans* are too dumb. 'Too dumb' is not an object possessed by 'Americans. - an American'

Except that a bunch of Americans hate Bill for being and atheist and because he tells them that science is correct instead of the BAHBLE.
