I think it is Cthulhu actually, Cthulhu looks like a giant kraken. And the saying "what is dead may never die" (or whatever the writer calls it) is used in the Necronomicon when describing Cthulhu.

For the artist, carving miniature renderings is like a meditation and a challenge at the same time. The most difficult task is to make a micro sculpture and not to break it. looks like a woodless pencil. They're basically a huge stick off graphite with a lacquer coating to keep your hands clean. Well, cleanish.

1) The head is carved from another bit of wood and attached after or 2) the head is actually made of the wooden part of the pencil and painted

These are wonderful they hurt my eyes just looking at them....Imagining how it would feel to create them.. There is a guy in the uk who does sculptures inside a needle eye. He uses a high powered microscope.
