The subreddit r/mildlyterrifying is a place for people to share and discuss things that give them a sense of unease or fear, but are not necessarily considered to be "scary" in the traditional sense. The subreddit's name itself is a tongue-in-cheek reference to the fact that the content shared on the subreddit is meant to be more unsettling than outright terrifying. Will be buried, but: I once had a book from the Goosebumps series. When I went to get it from my room it was dark in my room, but as soon as I turned with the book in hands, the light of the hallway lit up the bloodlike-letters of Goosebumps. And it made it seem like the blood dripped for real. I was baffled. Tried to recreate it, but it never happened again. It was awesome.

When I was a kid I would go into the woods to play. One day I stumbled across a 3'X3' (or thereabouts) shaft cut into a hill. Since it was horizontal I decided to see how far into the hill it went. I have no idea its purpose but went far enough into the 'cave' to run out of light. I remember it being mostly clay (no support, just a square hole in the dirt). I obviously made it back out fine but the later realization I could have been trapped in that 'cave', the possibility of a cave in haunts me to this day. No one would have known where I was and I would never have been found (shivers)

The idea of these inanimate objects suddenly moving on their own, or even worse, exhibiting human-like behavior, can be a chilling experience. This fear is often exploited in horror movies, but for some individuals, the thought of this happening in real life is enough to give them nightmares. We asked McAndrew how we could cope with our fears. The professor replied that we shouldn't wish to fight our fears in real-life situations, as they may save our life. "However, reminding yourself that a photograph or a movie does not pose a real threat to you may help to ease unpleasant feelings in their presence."

True story: when I was a teen we lived out in a pretty remote area surrounded by 5 acres of woods and I had a basement bedroom. One day we found footprints in the snow and a screw driver laying next to one of my bedroom windows. Immediately went that day and changed locks, got security cameras and adopted a big rottweiler (we named him Ripper lol). Never had another problem but always wondered who it had been... Flash forward 10 years and I get a call from one of my high school pals that our old neighbor had just been busted for child pornography 😳😳😳

There's a few of these in the world. The monks basically mummified themselves while still alive. They slowly stopped taking in food and water, ate only resinous plants to eliminate their body fat, and stayed in that prayer position til they died. They considered it a way to reach enlightenment. This is the only one that had a statue put around it though. (That we know of, any way.)

I've seen plenty of deep sea charter fishing boats with spiders in sunglasses casting for halibut or tuna. You should see those little arms/legs whirling when reeling one in. And they spin their own fishing nets!

The sun bear at Taronga zoo in Sydney, was rescued from a tiny wooden crate at a restaurant where he was going to be made into soup. He couldn’t be rehabilitated into the wild because he was only a cub when he was captured so had learned no survival skills. Yes, it’s extremely sad that he’s not in the wild, but his enclosure may be the best place for him, now. And yes, they are supposed to be lean and muscular (unless they’re being fattened to eat). They come from SE Asia, so don’t need a lot of fat to keep them warm.

There's a chair lift in Japan I went on that has almost the same view, and for a second I thought that's what this photo was. The hill is steep, so it's dizzying when you look behind you, but for most of the journey, the ground's just a few feet below (and even in this photo, you can see vegetation near the feet). There's just a brief area where it's high, and it has netting under it, like you see at the bottom here. I remember thinking it was be fun to fall into the net.

A friend was reading Stephen King's "Salem's Lot" at the kitchen table (facing the window). I went outside wearing vampire fangs with fake blood dripping down my chin and tapped on the window. When he looked up I drew my lips back and hissed at him. He went from sitting to standing in under a second and practically sh*t his pants. I couldn't stop laughing for about 10 minutes. That was 40 years ago and I'm hysterical just thinking about it. (And we're still friends).

In Perth W.A. I've had wolf spiders come in my house often, especially in spring. Twice I've seen this with the babies on mums back. They are really lovely spiders, not aggressive at all. They run to catch prey verses webs, so they are fast. My daughter and I catch them when they are inside to take them outside 😍

I actually put plastic spiders inside the lampshades for Halloween (I went all out that year. It was awesome). That was 5 years ago and my niece is still screaming. I walked around with a large fake tarantula on my shoulder all that week, too. Her name was (of course) Charlotte.

Not necessarily, it depends on load and barrel length of course, but a lot of .38 caliber bullets, for example, travel just under the speed of sound, so you'd hear the bang a bit before the bullet arrived.

Low resolution photo. Depending on the software, when you try to enlarge it, it basically clones nearby pixels to fill the gap. The lighting and high contrast means that when it clones the pixels, it can really distort the image. That's my guess anyway.

Almost certainly left by the builders. My uncle was a construction worker, and he said they often left all kinds of things tucked into the insulation of buildings, inside the walls. He said it was a tradition for good luck (this was told to me decades ago). He said one time they hid a guy's truck keys in there. He had to get copies of his spares because they couldn't find them ... or said they couldn't!
