The subreddit r/mildlyterrifying is a place for people to share and discuss things that give them a sense of unease or fear, but are not necessarily considered to be "scary" in the traditional sense. The subreddit's name itself is a tongue-in-cheek reference to the fact that the content shared on the subreddit is meant to be more unsettling than outright terrifying. However, looking at these images, we can still feel some chills going down our spines!
Bored Panda spoke with Francis McAndrew, Cornelia H. Dudley Professor of Psychology at Knox College, to learn more about that unsettling feeling of being creeped out. Scroll down to read the whole interview!

So That's That Huh?
There are many things that are generally considered creepy or uncanny. For example, the concept of dolls or mannequins coming to life can be a frightening thought for some people. The idea of these inanimate objects suddenly moving on their own, or even worse, exhibiting human-like behavior, can be a chilling experience. This fear is often exploited in horror movies, but for some individuals, the thought of this happening in real life is enough to give them nightmares. We asked McAndrew how we could cope with our fears. The professor replied that we shouldn't wish to fight our fears in real-life situations, as they may save our life. "However, reminding yourself that a photograph or a movie does not pose a real threat to you may help to ease unpleasant feelings in their presence."
I Was Taking Out The Trash This Morning And Found Bare Footprints
Oh don't worry it's just Harry and marv...(just getting ready for next Christmas)
True story: when I was a teen we lived out in a pretty remote area surrounded by 5 acres of woods and I had a basement bedroom. One day we found footprints in the snow and a screw driver laying next to one of my bedroom windows. Immediately went that day and changed locks, got security cameras and adopted a big rottweiler (we named him Ripper lol). Never had another problem but always wondered who it had been... Flash forward 10 years and I get a call from one of my high school pals that our old neighbor had just been busted for child pornography 😳😳😳
Woah... sounds like you changed the locks and got a dog at the right time.
Load More Replies...Why would a homeless person take off one sock and shoe and leave footprints on someone's steps? Its more likely just the person who posted. If someone was actually walking barefoot across their steps they would have a left and a right foot.
Load More Replies...I was dealing with depression many years back and took a walk during a 3:00 am snowstorm to clear my head. I walked through a small gate into a cemetery and looked down to my immediate right to see large, bare footprints in the snow having followed me through the gate and past me into a large, old tree - this even though the snow was falling so hard, all of my own footprints were being covered as quickly as they were made. I walked around the tree and found nothing - the footprint vanished upon reaching the tree, but at this point, they were starting to be covered up by snow anyway.
Reminds me of one winter. I looked out our kitchen window in the back of the house and saw a line of footprints in the 1 ft. deep snow leading up to our window and then nothing else. Our house backs onto a drainage slough so you can't walk along the back fence unless you know where all the uneven ground is or else you'll fall into the fence. I couldn't find any other footprints along the back fence so un less they flew or walked along the back of the house with very little snow there, I have no idea how they got into the yard or how they got out. Same thing happened one year during the summer- except the give-away that someone had been there was the overgrown grass and the trail leadin right up to the kitchen window.
I did this in slush at my daughter's house. It froze and was there for weeks.
I'm not an animal scientist but those aren't bare footprints, they're human ones.
Maybe a person looking for a spot to keep warm? It hurts my heart to see bare footprints in the snow.
Lolol I’ve made bare footprints in the snow before, chasing my very elderly arthritic chihuahua when she got out. She was slow so I stepped outside barefooted to get her, but then I found out she was faster than me (& she was enjoying it) We kept getting farther & farther from the house so I couldn’t go back for shoes & leave her. I took shortcuts thru a few yards bc my feet were freezing.
Lol that has happened at my place before. Overly friendly, drunken neighbors wanted to share some wine. Couldn't refuse. But, was confused why he wasn't wearing shoes...
Definitely need some cameras and to figure out where they came from since they were leaving only.

This Will Haunt My Dreams
The feeling of creepiness is a complex emotion that is often described as an uneasy or unsettling sensation that can be difficult to define or explain. It is often associated with things that are perceived as abnormal and can be triggered by a wide range of stimuli, including people, places, and objects. But how does the feeling of creepiness differ from other emotions, such as fear or disgust? Or are they linked? McAndrew explained that creepiness is like a form of emotional 'foreplay' before we descend into fear or disgust. "We experience fear or disgust in situations where there is a very clear danger present–something that might harm or contaminate us. We experience creepiness in situations where it is unclear if there is an actual threat or not, and we stay uncomfortably creeped out until we can resolve the situation one way or another."

Talking about the feeling of being creeped out we might also think about how our cultural experiences and exposure can impact how individuals respond to things that are perceived as creepy. To question how the feeling of being creeped out varies across different cultures, McAndrew responded that "the feeling of being creeped out is probably a very universal human experience, but the things that we learn to get creeped out by may be very different from culture to culture."

How does the media (movies, TV, video games, etc.) influence the way we experience and perceive creepiness? According to McAndrew, "the media preys upon our creep detectors. When we get creeped out by something, we cannot stop paying attention to it. Since the makers of movies, TV shows, and video games absolutely do not want you to stop paying attention, they will employ creepy things whenever it is to their advantage."
