If you suddenly feel like being drawn to nature more than ever before, you’re not alone. This new research from the RSPB, the UK's largest nature conservation charity, revealed huge public support, 4 in 5 people to be exact, for putting nature at the heart of coronavirus recovery plans for the government.

I mean, surviving the public health crisis made us all reevaluate our life choices, values and intentions. One of which became an almost universal realization that we need more self-care, more human connection, and more of Mother Nature.

So for anyone craving greenery, animals, and soul-soothing gifts of nature, we have this amazing compilation of pictures inspired by the r/MildlyInteresting subreddit. From an unbelievable desert bloom and frozen windscreen that looks like an award-winning shot of Everest glacier to incredible flowers and weird-shaped fruits, these are the curiosities of nature people have spotted and had little choice but to share them with others.

Scroll down to upvote your favorite ones and be sure to check out our previous posts with mildly interesting quirks of nature here and here.

Not me! But I've had very interesting patterns on my window where jumping spiders were stomping around, so perhaps the ice crystals bind to specks of matter, and then they continue to form where there's space, and according to water's molecular structure (snowflakes are six sided bc of this structure). I bet magnified, the crystals are not random.

To find out more about the wonders of nature, Bored Panda reached out to David Taberner, a nature photographer and English teacher based in Boston, Massachusetts. You can check out his website “Decent Nature Photography” full of David’s mesmerizing shots of nature.

Taberner said that nature photography is the most recent iteration of nature-based hobbies for him. “My spare time has always been spent in nature in one way or another: from childhood walks through the woods to long-distance backpacking in my early 20s to daily dog walks around local conservation land in my adult life. I've always liked to take pictures with my phone, but it wasn't until my partner generously gave me a DSLR for Christmas that the world of photography opened up for me.”

The photographer also said that he hopes to one day use his photography to encourage conservation. “I often wonder to what degree sharing my images online harms rather than helps. Instagram pages like mine are full of beautiful images of wild animals and unspoiled landscapes, which may lead the viewer to imagine that all is well in the natural world. The truth is, things are far from okay; every day more habitat is lost to development and more carbon is emitted,” he explained. Taberner also said that the trick for him right now is “figuring out how to not perpetuate the illusion that all is well, but instead be an ally to the natural world.”

I had to Google that! For others: TNR means “trap-neuter-return.” It’s a strategy to manage feral cat population and health. They humanely trap the cat, neuter/spay and vaccinate it, clip the tip off the ear (humanely under anesthesia and they keep the cat around until the wound has healed properly) to indicate that it’s been fixed and vaxxed, and return the cat to where it was living. Neat!

I'm a vet nurse, I've worked with a veterinarian that provides this service. The cats are properly anesthetized for the spay/neuter and the ear clip. They are also kept in a clinic or shelter and cared for until they are completely healed. At least that's how we did it. Notched ears are easy to see from a distance, tattoos are not and collars are easily removed by the cats.

When asked what it is about nature that makes it such a magical place like no other, Taberner said that it's hard to express in words. He explained: “Waking up early and walking down a trail, away from the cars & concrete that I'm normally surrounded by, feels like a return or a homecoming. When I'm in the woods, I try to shut off the chatter in my brain and instead turn outward. I suppose it's a sort of meditation: what can I see, hear, smell, and feel? Focusing on my senses makes me feel more connected to the forest, is good for my mental health, and is extremely helpful from a photography standpoint, both in terms of finding compositions and noticing wildlife.”

“I don't think there's a doubt that people have grown distant from nature. Our alienation from nature is best illustrated by the very term ‘nature,’” Taberner told us. “We conceive of nature as something other than ourselves, a place that we can visit from time to time, but not something that we are part of or live in.”

The nature photographer believes that just getting people out into nature is not as simple as it sounds. “Even among nature lovers, there seems to be a disconnect between our appreciation of nature and the often thoughtless consumption that is an everyday part of American life, including my own,” he added.

Taberner believes that although he spends so much of his time admiring the natural world, he also knows that he participates in the destruction of it with almost every purchase he makes. “The fact is, our economic system is based on the exploitation of people and the natural world. Until we transition to a sustainable, just economy, our disconnect from nature—regardless of what you or I do as individuals—will simply be baked into our way of life,” he commented.

It's very possible that a fish is what started it's growth. Eagles and bears will sometimes drop fish in the woods. If there are pinecones or seeds under the fish, it can spur growth from all the nitrogen released by the decaying fish.

For those who’re wondering, the day of the nature photographer starts, as Taberner says, “painfully early” since animals are typically most active at dawn. “I wake up painfully early to get to a location where I'll have a good chance of seeing wildlife. A lot of effort and patience goes into this type of photography, from planning to scouting to trail cams to sitting in a blind for hours at a time waiting for an animal to show up.”

When asked about his favorite memory of taking pictures in nature, Taberner recounted: “One day I went for a walk with my partner at a location where I had spent several early mornings looking for wildlife without any luck. I assumed that we wouldn't see any wildlife because it was midday, but within twenty minutes, we witnessed a family of otters eating fish on the bank of the pond and a porcupine bumbling down the trail, totally unbothered by our presence.”

It was a special moment for Taberner that’s hard to forget. “I felt so humbled like the natural world was playing a joke on me, almost as if it was laughingly saying, ‘sorry, did you think you knew something about how I work?’ I also loved that my partner was able to share in the wonder and excitement that I feel when I see animals, wild and free, in their natural habitat,” he concluded in an interview.

Blue-tailed skink. It's the juvenile form of three species of skink. Five stripes, blue tail, it's a skink that'll probably be a redhead when adult, possibly a broadhead, and I cqn't recall the third, but my cats love 'em. I rescue skinks a *lot*... they like my enclosed porch, which is my cats' territory, and, well, y'know.

Seems to be a true albino, with pink nose and all (luckily it doesn't seem to have affected his eyes). White deer will still have the common black nose, etc.

Just a few points. Firstly, no. We tried to convince the birds to help us but they were already under contract (wouldn't say who with). Secondly, 'Giant Death Star' is what happens when you put the name to a vote on the 17th of March. It's real purpose is to provide us members with better Wifi globally so we can send abuse to those darn Masons. Finally, construction was completed last year. The pandemic freed up a lot of time for us!

Man, I always wanted in a place where you could just 'find' fossils or interesting minerals. Living in Central Europe (far from any mountains) I can find such things only in stores.

This not caused by lightning, it's got a graft that is the wrong type of tree. Happens often with this kind of yrees. Basically it is just two types of trees in one, created by humans on accident or on purpose.

I live not far from here. This scene could be found along Highway 121/12 on Sonoma county. Unfortunately the entire area, including a historical nearby Dairy went up in flames in 2017. The photo was snapped by Charles O'Rear, a former National Geographic photographer who was trolling for green hillsides on a January day in 1998.

This is outrageous but in theory if they had dissected the sea star into pieces, (carefully keeping a part of the central disc attached to each pieces)...it would regenerate...and one sea star would become several. Coincidentally my son is learning in Science all of the different phylums and species and we read how certain sea stars were considered a nuisance to fisherman, who would cut them up and throw them back into the water. Their efforts had the opposite effect they hoped for because all those pieces would regenerate and the population of sea stars exploded.

First time I heard their screeching in the middle of the night, it was cause for concern, I thought a woman was being attacked. Turns out it was a clutch of three very hungry babies and we watched the parents endlessly hunt for food.

A friend who lived in LA would get lemons like that off the tree that came with the house. The lemon juice from the lemons was SO strong that if you put it in a plastic cup, it'd corrode the plastic and ruin the cup.

That's a skin split; happens when the tomatoes have started ripening and get more water than usual (usually from rain, though it can happen just from regular watering). If you have even slightly ripened tomatoes on the vine and a storm is coming, go and pick them - they'll ripen fine inside (don't put them in the fridge) but they'll probably split if you leave them. I know all this from experience :)

    KatHat
    Community Member
4 years ago Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

No, a skin split - once ripening starts, the skin has no more flex left in it, so if it gets more water at any point the skin splits (earlier, before ripening, the skin would just grow a little bigger to accommodate the water).

Stabilises the river bank- they've done similar things with old barges/boats along the banks of a river in England (can't remember which one but I know it has a fairly brutal tidal current)

It's not slime mold, it's bacteria. It's a pellicle. There was something else in the barrel other than water and it's interacting with it.

Probably no one’s going to read this but be VERY careful around bats they carry rabies and if you get bitten by one even if you think it might not have broken the skin go to a hospital for rabies shots asap hopefully within 24 hours

Depends where you live. However, they're also often endangered and you could get in trouble handling one that is endangered, so it's best to contact a local wildlife organisation.

Either a very young hen or a old one. First eggs can look really weird, always fun when the new hens start laying eggs. Some almost have landscape shape, some dont have a shell, just sort of a bubble.

Wrinkled Eggs As a hen ages, the whites (or albumen) in their eggs naturally gets thinner, and since it's more difficult for the shell to encase a watery substance, the shell can end up with bumps and ridges. Heat stress can also cause a wrinkled egg surface, as can poor overall nutrition, or a defective shell gland.

It's a double paned window, meaning there's a small space in between the two sheets of glass - and moisture got in there somehow allowing it to grow.

Look on the back of your nephew's thigh(his shorts would be covering it) for a negative impression of similar shape. And, try having your GF look on her torso (like she's curled up like a baby) for her matching one...I have a matching set on the inside of my thighs.

Are you going to let it keep growing? I’m intensely curious as to what it will grow up to be

Casting an ants nest is only ok to me if their fire ants, they are an invasive species destroying the natural balance.
