30 Painful Luggage Fails That Might Make You Think “I’m Glad It’s Not Me” (New Pics)
Interview With ExpertIf you’re anything like us, you absolutely love travel! There’s nothing quite like hopping on a plane, train, or bus or getting into your car and exploring new places and towns. Adventure is what helps you stay curious and open-minded. But setting that rose-colored perspective aside for a moment, you can’t deny that far from everything goes right on trips. So, you need a bit of resilience to weather the issues that inevitably pop up.
Flights get delayed, people fall ill, your fellow passengers might be rude, and… your luggage might not handle the trip as well as you do. Today, our team at Bored Panda is featuring some of the biggest, most painful baggage fails ever shared online. From people’s bags and suitcases getting damaged to them getting left behind, there’s a bit of everything. Scroll down below to take a peek.
Bored Panda wanted to get to grips with how travelers can minimize the risks of having their luggage damaged, as well as how they can stay positive even when things go wrong. So, we reached out to the team at the Scandinavian outdoor brand 'Db' for their insights. Simon Wahlqvist was kind enough to shed some light on our questions, and you'll find his thoughts below.

Fly Emir8s - And Get Your Non-Profit’s 20 Ipads Confiscated
A little background - I work in IT, but volunteer with a healthcare non-profit that does health screenings around the world. We have screened at least 5,000 people since 2016 for hypertension, diabetes and kidney failure, successfully connecting at-risk people in remote areas with the help they need. I developed an app that uses a laptop, a wireless access point and 20 iPads to collect testing results, which allows us to collect data and get it to the doctors that can help.
After a successful 3-day screening in southwest Uganda last week where we saw over 1,000 people, I received my luggage back with a nice “we confiscated all your stuff” card from the Dubai airport, courtesy of Emir8s Air. Airport chat via WhatsApp confirmed it was taken with no ability to get it back. No reason was given, despite the airline’s website saying that checking tablets in luggage was allowed.
Our health screening program is pretty much dead now.
It's the rules there, and they're made very clear. You can't bring that many devices in. If you don't like it, don't go there.
Load More Replies...Should be raised at governmental level. This wasn't baggage it was done at least at customs level so governmental. Must have some accountability.
It was done before boarding, because shipping lithium batteries like this is not allowed and is actually a fire hazard. They could have shipped everything in a proper container, with the proper labels, so it could have been handled with the proper procedures. Also, depending on the country of origin bringing electronic devices over $2000 in value is subject to Customs declaration and OP should have presented paperwork to trace the purchase of the devices.
Load More Replies...That's 100% fair and square on OP. Emirates clearly states in the their TOS that each passenger is limited to a maximum of 15 personal electronic devices, that if embarked must be packaged separately. All airlines have regulations like these. Lithium batteries are a fire hazard. OP should have notified the airline, shipped the case separately with the mandated Dangerous Goods shipping label, so these parcels are put into a safer cargo hold. Also, such a shipment would have to be handled at customs for import/export. OP did something maybe under good intentions, but nevertheless very stupid
I know an Optometrist that does this kind of charity work and had a similar problem in Africa. They confiscated all the equipment they brought to do eye exams. Luckily this guy is well connected and after making a bunch of phone calls the president of the country they were in showed up at the airport and they got their equipment back. Plus then they spent the afternoon with the president. This was decades ago, so I'm not sure if he'd have as much luck these days.
At this level confiscation is theft with the excuse of authority
"Confiscated" i.e. stole. We stole your iPads to give to our children/girlfriends/ superiors.
Since when WhatsApp become the channel for a legal dispute? I would call the Embassy or the Ministry of Foreign Affairs right from the airport.
According to Wahlqvist, from the Scandinavian outdoor brand 'Db,' something that can make a huge difference for travelers is choosing a durable, hard-shell suitcase. This helps protect their belongings, "especially when bags get tossed around during handling."
"Packing smart helps too—using packing cubes and padded inserts keeps things organized and cushioned from impact," he told Bored Panda via email.
Meanwhile, we also asked what airports and airlines can do on their end to protect travelers' bags more. "Airports and airlines can improve this by investing in more modern baggage handling systems and training ground staff to handle luggage with care. Adding padding to high-impact areas (like conveyor belt edges) could also prevent some of the more common damage points."
When United Airlines Can't/Won't Tell A Customer Where Their Missing Luggage Is
A couple of years ago Delta delivered a suitcase with a tag on it with my husband’s name to my home while I was at work. He was out of town but it wasn’t his suitcase. There wasn’t a luggage tag to identify who it belonged to. I called Delta, got transferred to baggage, and explained what happened. They said they’d send someone right out. They didn’t, so I called again the next day, and again they said they’d send someone right out. This went on for 3 more days and they never sent anyone. I finally opened the suitcase which was full of men’s clothes. I donated them to a thrift shop that supports veterans.
Just Watched This Bag Fall Out Of A Luggage Carrier And So Many Workers Just Walked Past It And Won't Put It In The Plane
Having worked on airport grounds (GSN certified), the "not my job" attitude in these cases is actually *a requirement*. Following strict procedures is necessary for safety of the workers and anyone involved. You don't want to step anywhere outside where you are supposed to be. Some of those yellow line are there to prevent people walking into spinning engines, or in vehicle lanes. You just warn someone who has authority to communicate with ground control, and let them do their thing.
Load More Replies...Back in the 80's went on holiday and a friend put his boombox in a football kitbag absolutely smothered in bubble wrap marked fragile. Just as well because as we got off the plane we watched a luggage loader throw it twenty feet from the plane onto the floor of the luggage crate!
You don't understand the job. If one person picked it up that was not working this aircraft then the workers for this aircraft can file a grievance with the union and then the worker who was trying to help could get written up or fired. Its all about the unions.
I've seen this happen. I found a gate worker and told them, but was met with indifference. It just sat there.
Naturally, it's hard to stay positive when your luggage ends up missing or shows up broken when you land. "But having a well-packed carry-on with essentials (change of clothes, toiletries, valuables) gives you some breathing room while things get sorted. Travel insurance/buying from brands that offer a warranty that covers baggage issues can also ease the financial sting," Wahlqvist said.
"Emotionally, mindset matters too—focusing on the experiences you’re having, not the stuff you’re missing, helps keep the trip on track. If you can lean into the adventure and laugh about the mishap later, it becomes a story to tell, not just a frustration."
Wahlqvist suggested that travelers consider choosing bags with distinct designs or colors to help avoid mix-ups at the carousel. Meanwhile, something else that can give some added peace of mind is using tracking solutions like Apple AirTag, etc.
This Is How The Luggage Containing My Playstation Arrived
Don't bring really expensive things. I learned this long ago when my Trumpet got destroyed.
Serious question to those of you with hard shell suitcases: is it worth it? I've only had soft shells but I'm debating making the switch!

That was a metal strip, and the Concorde tires were custom designed to work at incredibly high pressure, at the very limit of the material's performances. Common airliner's tires are much more forgiving.
Load More Replies...Wahlqvist was kind enough to share a few more pieces of advice with Bored Panda. For example, travelers should strive to pick the right bag setup. "For shorter trips or city breaks, a well-designed carry-on paired with an under-seat bag can eliminate the need to check luggage altogether—saving you time at baggage claim and reducing the risk of lost gear," he said.
"This streamlined approach means you can hit the ground running and spend more time exploring, not waiting around. Bonus tip: opt for bags with dedicated compartments to keep essentials like tech, toiletries, and snacks easily accessible during the journey."

Report to the authorities and the airline for invasive species tracking, the spider will very likely die anyway given how delicate they are, and if she does then save the body for the authorities as they might need it. I don't think this pretty spider is going to survive.
Just checked the OP. Their clothing was covered in permethrin. This spider is heavily poisoned and was very much dying before they even landed.

That’s My Luggage, Not On The Plane
I barely made it onboard due to a late connecting flight and after we pulled away from the gate, the pilot pulled the plane out of line and announced, "We were leaving a few minutes early but there was one passenger's luggage that didn't make the flight." Like everybody, I groaned at the unexpected event until I saw a guy running across the tarmac with my bag. Then I just scooched down in my seat and hoped nobody made the connection.
Nobody should have their baggage damaged, delayed, or lost. It’s something that we wouldn’t wish on even our very worst frenemies. But the reality of the world is that mistakes can—and often do—happen.
The staff working at the airport and the airlines can make small mistakes throughout the process of your bags being scanned, tagged, and transported to and from the plane.
There are so many different moving parts when it comes to processing people’s luggage that there’s lots of room for error, no matter how talented and well-trained everyone is. Given a long enough timeframe, small accidents and baggage mishandling will happen. The only thing you can focus on is minimizing the frequency of these mistakes, not eradicating them altogether.
Baggage "Handled" By Airline. Flight All The Way To Nz, Final Photo Is The Identical Luggage
A few years back I began taking a photo of my luggage as I entered the airport. Basically as evidence of what it looked like before boarding.
I won’t check my lightweight composite plastic suitcase because I’m afraid it would end up like this (I only use it as a carry-on). I check my incredibly rugged Delsey Helium that’s more than 20 years old. It has lost zipper pulls and it’s ID label, and it looks its age, but it’s nearly indestructible.
How To Go About Reimbursement On Destroyed Luggage
Traveling from Minneapolis was asked to check bag at gate. Upon arrival at salt lake international my bag never came at baggage claim. After talking with the delta agents for 30 minutes. When a man walked from the back holding a shredded suitcase with what was left of my belonging wrapped in sheet from my luggage. I am a traveling nurse and everything from my 400$ stethoscope meds scrubs multiple contacts and more were gone or damaged to a total loss. Any advice on how to go about it. They are saying I must provide receipts showing proof of purchase prior to the damage.
That is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard of. Who keeps receipts for everything from a toothbrush to a piece of expensive medical equipment? These airlines have no shame, and take no responsibility. Its abysmal.
$400 seemed like a lot for a small set of tubes and pipes but digital stethoscopes can be that expensive.
That one is a Littman, so about $100. A good one can be $500 or more.
Load More Replies...At Least They Didn't Lose My Luggage
I've been refused carry-on size luggage when the overheads are full. They require you to leave it.
Load More Replies...According to Poente Technical, the first step of baggage handling is checking it in. Each piece of your luggage is tagged with a unique identifier, including destination codes and routing information.
That way, your bags and suitcases can be tracked throughout the airport using automated systems.
Next, your tagged bags then make their way through the airport’s vast network of conveyor belts. The luggage is automatically scanned, sorted, and routed toward the flights it needs to be on. Naturally, each piece of baggage is carefully screened to ensure that they don’t contain any illegal items or dangerous materials.
How Aal Returned My Checked Luggage That I Didn't Want Checked But Had To Because They "Ran Out" Of Overhead Storage Despite Having Plenty When I Boarded
I'm constantly baffled by travellers with rucksacks being allowed to take them into the cabin. How in Gods name they get them in the overhead locker baffles me, not to mention must be a safety hazard for anyone sitting below or adjacent.
My Luggage Got Ran Over. I Was Forced To Gate-Check My Carry-On, And When I Went To Pick It Up I Was Told It Had Been “Banged Up”. However It Was Actually Mangled
When Can People Learn This Won't Close?
I am 1k and there is one thing that annoys me to no end - that is United doesn't put a much bigger sign on each of the middle overhead compartment to let people know their luggage will not fit unless turned horizontally for 99% of the luggage carryons.
Every flight I take, there are multiple people that insist it will fit and end up costing an entire line jam, and a few times my own luggage that's completely positioned correctly to be slammed against closure that I have to yell at people to stop shoving their luggage in.
I feel like this is something that can be prevented if they show a video before boarding (while people wait) or a gigantic sign to let people know it will not fit. Sigh.
We have size gauges at check-in, in Australia, just a small frame, if its doesn't fit, it has to be checked. Simples.
In theory, yes. But I keep seeing people bringing it anyways and very little check.
Load More Replies...Some will never learn. 'That's the aircrew problem' kind of people
I really hate this selfish people, always taking all benefits for themselves, spaces occupying and then not being there. Being rude all times. I had a guy taking my coffeecup and breakfast for himself off my place, i was so openmouthed i couldnt say anything. This will never happen again - next time i will pierce my knife into his hand, o so sorry - i didnt know your hand was in my breakfast. The world developes into a wild jungle with big nasty apes.
I see signs showing how to lay carry-on luggage over the storage on the (domestic US) flights I go on. Then again after trying a handful of airlines I only fly Alaska anymore; I always found United and American airlines to be quite unpleasant/inadequate.
Once your luggage is checked and deemed safe, it’s then loaded onto carts and transported to the airplane, where it’s placed in the cargo hold before takeoff. Something that the ground crew and airline staff need to keep in mind is the weight distribution of the baggage throughout the plane.
The entire process is reversed for planes that land, culminating in you picking your bags up from the reclaim area carousel.
Saw Someone Else Post A Suitcase, Here’s Mine From A Year Ago
How does this even happen? Does it travel in the wheel well or something?
I bet the luggage handlers must have a good laugh at the damage they help cause.
This Happened Last Year, Flying Back From Vacation. They Told Us Our Suitcase Must Have Fallen Off The Transport Truck. Everything Inside Was Gone, Yet They Managed To Retrieve The Bag
I know of some luggage handlers worked out of Pearson Airport ( Toronto) used to ransack luggage etc to see what they could steal. It went on for years.
Why Do Gate Agents Let People Get Away With Gate Checking Oversized Luggage
I am disabled and have medical supplies that need to be with me on layovers. It won't all fit in a carry-on.
Check out the ‘medical equipment’ allowance. I have a carryon suitcase (small), cpap bag (small), and either a back pack or purse, depending on my event. 3 things, as the medical equipment does not count in the tally. Meds go either in my purse or the cpap bag. They never go in my checked luggage, in the event that I need to do that.
Load More Replies...its absolutely infuriating. There are clear size guidelines, but they're never enforced. Instead we have to listen to them plead over the intercom for us to check luggage. Which everyone ignores
Seems besides the point of having luggage checked in in the first place. At this point in time in the flight world, I would make them go back to the start to check in. I mean, seriously, how many people do not know this. The only reason I can think of is they did self check in and have lived under a rock for the past 20 years.
I did this. Once. I'd never flown solo as an adult (yes, I know, my rock is lovely thanks) and simply didn't realize. Not gonna make that mistake twice!
Load More Replies...Here’s the thing, though, even if every single person employed is well-paid, highly trained, highly motivated, skilled, and responsible, small mistakes can still happen. Human error is one aspect to think about. But even automated systems can break down at times, and your luggage can get damaged as it gets tossed around or stuck.
But the fact is, just like in any other part of the job industry, the staff employed at airports and airplanes aren’t always motivated, trained, or dedicated to doing their jobs to the very best of their ability.
I’m Not Even Mad I’m Impressed
By how Delta managed to dent my Away Suitcase. They very quickly reimbursed me the full cost even though I’ve had it for probably 5 years. I’m sure I can indent this too.
Sometimes I question why we spend fortunes on luggage etc when ultimately it can quite easily be destroyed by a useless baggage handler.

How My Suitcase Arrived From The Baggage Carousel After My Flight
What the heck damages luggage like this? Most of them look like they were run over or burnt somehow.
The conveyer belt systems, It just takes one bag to get jammed and all the others pile up behind it, the belt then acts like a belt sander.
Load More Replies...Even if their jobs require a lot of responsibility, it’s a very human tendency to strive to do the least work possible. There are plenty of careful and disciplined baggage handlers working at airports around the world… but you’ve probably seen a few who couldn’t care less about their jobs. Some of them throw around suitcases and bags without a care in the world—like they’re playing a violent sport.
You look at the baggage sometimes being energetically tossed into the carousels, into carts, and into the cargo hold, and you secretly hope that your stuff is getting more respect.
So This Is How They Lose Luggage
We saw that from a window on our last flight. It was 20 minutes of entertainment while we debated if the ground crew would notice. They did.

Load More Replies...I once landed in Toronto Pearson from Glasgow. Waited in vain for my luggage to appear for about 30 minutes. A random airport employee suggested I check the stacks of luggage placed about 50 metres from the carousel. My case, and various others, had been taken off the carousel and dumped without any attempt of informing the passengers waiting for their bags to appear.
We had a similar experience in Atlanta going through international terminal. To be fair, that was one time, the other few times it was just fine.
I guess this luggages should be on another continent but they were loaded in the wrong plane.
According to the UK Civil Aviation Authority, if your baggage is damaged, you should report this when you arrive at the airport. You’ll likely need to write up a report and put in a written claim to the airline ASAP. If your claim is accepted, the company may pay to repair your luggage, or they might provide you with a replacement suitcase.
My Suitcase Got Destroyed. I’m Not Even Mad At This Point Because Of How Comical This Level Of Destruction Is. The Handle Got Melted To Its Enclosure And The Metal Has Heat Discoloration
I think they put it on another plane, which crashed, then retrieved it for you.
A mini explosion of something flammable like illegally packed lighter fluid in the next package might also be the reason, or like P1 said, lightning might do damage like that
How I Found My Luggage When I Arrive In My Country
I have this exact same suitcase. It suffered a similar fate. With my wedding dress in it. Thankfully the dress arrived intact and I got reimbursed half the price of the suitcase. I swear, they know thar you have valuables in suitcases and they treat them harsh on purpose...
Of course they know you've got valuables; new or expensive suitcase, padlock on suitcase, absence of scuff marks and old labels, and they have x-ray machine within baggage handling area.

Meanwhile, the U.S. Department of Transportation notes that airlines are required to compensate passengers if their bags are damaged, delayed, or lost.
“Airlines are responsible for repairing or reimbursing a passenger for damaged baggage and/or its contents when the damage occurs while the bag is under the airline’s control during transportation. Airlines are not responsible for pre-existing damage to the bag or if the damage was caused by improper packing,” the DOT explains, adding that if the damage can’t be repaired, the airline will negotiate a compensation amount based on the value of your bag.

Luggage Wheels Are Not Meant To Be Used To Throw Luggage Around With
2 of 4 bags has a wheel out of whack (brand new luggage for trip) and 2 of 4 have the wheel ripped open in luggage (1 brand new 1 2 years old)
Went to United to file claim and was told hardsided is the worst as the wheels constantly rip off...... I pointed out I watched them unload luggage by 1 wheel and 1 handle last night, with most weight being led by the wheel and the manager at United simply said yes that is why these are so bad. Buy soft sided next time.
Many of the pictures in this post make me hesitant to buy hard sided luggage. But honestly it seems like it doesn't matter what your luggage is made of, if they mishandle it badly enough it's toast no matter what it's made of.
Hard-sided can break, fabric can tear, it's a lose-lose situation

Looks like everything sat in there loose. Always fill empty space to keep everything from moving.
Always pack anything like that, including toothpaste and sunscreen in a ziploc so if they go splat, the damage is contained. Also any glass bottles, in plastic bags and wrapped in clothes. It's not 100% of course, but it helps
Major Delays Due To Storms. We've All Just Been Sitting Here Watching Our Luggage Get Rained On For The Past 45 Minutes
I would think the airlines wouldn't let this happen - after, wet luggage gains weight and multiple pieces of wet luggage would add a not insignificant amount of weight. If the airlines are concerned about obese passengers, shouldn't they also be concerned about waterlogged luggage, too?

Air Canada Messed Up My Bag (But At Least I Got Photos)
I almost missed my connection in Switzerland today and my carry on was gate checked. Thats fine. I passed it to a lady right before I boarded the plane. I took my seat and realized I was by the baggage hold’s door and I was able to see my bag from the window. Cool! Then I realized that the handle was bent at a weird angle. It definitely wasn’t when I handed it off - I speed-walked through the airport with that bag just fine 20 minutes ago. THEN I watched them put it in the plane with the HANDLE STILL EXTENDED. I guess they thought it was already broken, so what the hell! Or maybe they couldn’t close it. Anyways - who knows what it will look like when we land. I’m a bit sad. I’ve had this bag since I was about 5 years old, cute little tag and everything :(
