“Leave Before It Is Too Late To Escape”: 40 Indicators That We Live In A Dystopian Reality, As Shared By Our Community
Society is a complex web of norms and beliefs that shape our lives. However, it is not always a perfect system, and there are problems that fundamentally undermine individuals' well-being and human rights. These issues can manifest themselves in a variety of ways, ranging from systemic inequalities and discrimination to oppressive practices and restrictions on personal freedoms.
Thinking about that, I wanted to ask the Bored Panda community what they think is fundamentally wrong with society and restricts their human rights, hence "Tell me you are living in a dystopian nightmare without telling me you are living in a dystopian nightmare". Scroll down to read the answers!

The country is run by people who are millionaires, telling everyone else that these are "tough times" and they must "cut back" to ensure their continued survival while they live in excess.
Let me guess, america? I just yesterday googled a few facts about america again. No universal healthcare, no paid leave from work. Pure slavery and pure capitalism with zero respect for the people. The Land of the free! Yay!
Thank those old repukes in the Senate who don't want to lose out on their big bucks they get from the NRA, coal lobbyists and oil. They will never vote for anything that benefits working people in this, the "Greatest Country in the World".
So true, same to an extent in the UK where politicians take extra money from companies to lobby in their behalf. Too few politicians are in it for the good of the people.
Load More Replies...History shows that - if you take the trend in America to its logical conclusion - it usually ends with guillotines.
Most people do not earn a living wage.
By definition, slavery is unpaid. Even at minimum wage, you are still being paid.
Load More Replies...I agree these wages suck and I have been a victim of poverty. However my definition of living wage changed when I saw the people of Iraq and Afghanistan. When I was dirt poor to the average American, I was living large compared to the Middle East. Not saying its OK but it still makes me feel ok when I have hard times.
As Chris Rock once said, 'minimum wage' means 'if I could legally pay you less, then I would.'
People are actually arguing over an opinion like they'll be able to change it!
This would make sense IF wages and minimum wage rose each year to match cost of living. As it is the 7.25 wage has remained stagnant and is becoming worth less and less. Also higher earners have seen their wages increase each year.

George Orwell's fabulous book '1984' is no longer fiction but a commentary.
And soon we'll have to say the same about Margaret Atwood's "The Handmaid's Tale."
Soon? It's here. The second that m**********r stole the election, we knew.

I live in a country where two out of the last four presidents got into office by losing the popular vote.
Where one party only needs 30% of the vote to "win" because of gerrymandering.
And in much the same fashion, the filibuster.

Well since O’Tool got 28% and Sighn got 25%, you obviously don’t understand what winning the “popular vote” means. Trudeau won, get over it.

There are women in some parts of my country who still have to get permission from their boyfriends or husbands to get birth control. They also have to fight with pharmacists who are religiously opposed to it to get birth control. And they sometimes have been denied life-improving surgery to have hysterectomies because- whether the woman wants children or not- the doctor doesn't agree with her not having children.
I live in the US.
Vanilla ISIS , all let religion lead their lives and wives , all drive trucks with lots of flags and they all love them guns , tell me i'm wrong

Did I still have to sign it being an angry hormonal crime spree after I need the permission of a man on what I wanted to do with my body? I was 29 and no ones permission should have been needed. Second child, I could not afford a third. My husband had previously lost his job and did not try to gain employment until after our divorce. If men want to have the babies let them. A US story here.
Similar things happen in the UK, a woman wants her tubes tied and is denied because "she may change her mind" or "she hasn't met the right man yet"
Same here, I had to spend 17 years in excruciating pain before finally being allowed a hysterectomy, and at the last appointment the doctor was actually asking MY DAD the questions (who was only with me for moral support, I was over 35!). This was in Belgium, not the US or UK.

Hysterectomies and tying tubes are unfortunately also not permitted :( but I have NEVER heard about permission for birth control other than in Handmaid's Tale!

The American dream is a lie the rich tell to convince people to work till they die and never actually reach their goals. The moment an accident happens, you lose everything and you're told you didn't try hard enough.
"How did you become a millionaire?" "Lots of hard work!" (meanwhile actually: Was born into a rich family, got a huge company as legacy from his parents, exploited minimum wage workers and took money from their work)
I had an accident which left me disabled just over 20 years ago. I'm also a single mother whose child was 12 at the time. The insurance I paid for through my employer to protect my salary, which was should have paid 66 2/3 of my salary, was denied despite the medical evidence presented to them. It went through all of the appeals processes and was denied with nothing left for me to do. Several years later my social security disability was finally approved: even after all of this time, my monthly checks haven't nearly caught up to what I should have gotten from that insurance. If there were a law on the books forcing insurance companies to abide by the decision of an ALJ once it's reached, people like me wouldn't have to live on next to nothing because of insurance companies who clearly refuse claims based on falsified medical reports (the judge's words, not mine).
Insurance is a scam and insurance companies are done of the worst people on earth
Load More Replies...These days, the only way to achieve the American dream is to move to Europe
In the USA, if you have a car accident, you pay for an ambulance, hospitalization, treatment and any recovery drugs. In UK, all this would cost you zero.
The American Dream has never existed, just a figment of Hollywood's and Congress's imaginations.
Still having to go to work when you’re really sick if you want to get paid to have a roof over your head and cope with the high costs of living.

I'm teleworking while I have covid. I have decent health insurance and could go to the dr if I needed to thankfully, but a hospital stay would be a huge burden. But I'm paid hourly and don't currently feel that bad, so don't feel like I can justify taking a sick day since no hours = no pay
If I call out sick I get written up at work. Oh yeah, my employer also doesn't give us sick leave either.
I worked for a large corporation, oh, let's call it HD for short- and saw this all of the time.
My last hospital visit was 104k , thankfully I had insurance.
My last hospital visit was 0 euro. Medical debt doesnt exist at all here. Germany. Universal healthcare for everyone.
I immigrated to the USA when I was 40, my oldest son was 12. I was a high school teacher in my country. My family was cleaning buildings at night. 3 years later we bought a house, 3 years after that my 16 year old son was taken to the emergency room with onset of diabetes. He stayed in a private room at a children's hospital. We did not have insurance. The bill was close to 40k. We talked with the hospital's social worker. Because of donations to the hospital, our bill was cut to around 15k, which we paid in 2 years. Yes, I'm proud to live here and be a citizen since 2015. Try doing the same say,in England. Or Germany.
Having to choose between paying my rent or buying my insulin
It's more common than you think. The last time I got insulin where they clearly charged me the no insurance price (I have a Medicare Advantage plan), I about croaked. $1,500 USD for a one month supply.

Or you need to choose between buying food or paying bills :( And I live in Australia

I have major medical issues, some of which are genetic, but if I were to become pregnant right now I could be forced to carry a (likely non-viable) baby to term and give birth. So I have decided not to date until the law is reinstated. If I don't get a choice, the men don't get a choice with me.
I agree 100%. Maybe if all women who didn't want their rights stripped could /should stop all sexual contact.

BMW is selling a subscription to enable the heated seats in your car.
I'm so fed up with subscription services, most of them are just a giant con.
I think the worst part is knowing that the capability is there in the car you "own" but is being limited
Load More Replies...If I am correct in my understanding, it's not actually a subscription. The functionality is built into the car, and if people don't buy the option, they can try it for three months. Then, if they want, they can either buy the option outright, or pay it in monthly terms until fully paid. If that's true, then it's not really a subscription but more of a loan. That said, stuff like this should just be standard. Especially in more expensive cars IMHO.
From a production point of view it’s brilliant, you produce one car in various colours, then the client chooses how much of the functionality they can afford. No more producing many different models with slight changes in spec, just one car with the whole lot

The wealthy need to keep everyone else in a lifetime of debt. They love monthly payments.
I can't believe people are still buying from dealers that do this. Are they going to raise the price every couple months. Why not only allow me to drive up to 50 unless I unlock with a fee to drive at interstate speeds. Maybe $1 every time I want to roll the window up or down. I won't buy a vehicle that I don't own every piece of.
They do the same for CarPlay and most likely Android Auto as well.
From what I understand is that it was once suggested but that they didn't pursue this idea.

When I was a U.S. Army recruiter, back in the late 80’s, the biggest selling point was the GI Bill. Service to your country would allow you to receive a college education WITHOUT having to go into debt. I’m still amazed that so many people didn’t think it was an equitable trade. Now, during times of war, I can understand those thoughts. BTW, both my sons and both of my DIL’s were active duty Army. No college debt at all.

Jesus Christ.. Medical Debt doesnt exist as a term in my country for example. I can go to the doctor and pay nothing. Even when I am sick, it is not counted as paid leave, it is counted as sick with full pay. Even if I get sick during vacation, I get my vacation days back. I can also be sick for 6 weeks and my employer has to pay me full pay. After 6 weeks I still get 70% of my pay by the health insurance..for months if needed. I get paid for every therapy or operation if it is advised by doctors. So when I get sick I dont have to worry about paying my rent or my other bills. I live in germany. Now that is what I expect of a modern society.

When coverage ends, mfgrs provide the med for free but the parent has no more coverage for anything, ever.

Christians will get in your face and judge you openly. Lot of homophobes, lot of racists. A lot of animal abuse and neglect. But hey, it's really cheap to live here. And our grocery prices are pretty fair.
Honestly I wouldnt want to live in such a country. I just cant imagine living in a country that is even not wiling to provide some basics like universal healthcare and guareanteed paid leave from work for every exployee by law. Sorry.
Right now, I have fewer rights in this country than a man, a gun, and/or a fetus. USA! USA!

Thinking "thats wierd" when there hasnt been a mass shooting for a week
Or being completely desensitized to the number of mass shootings/gun violence as if they are just another fender bender that we witness driving around.
I'm not in the US and I've become desensitised to the mass shootings in the US - there was yet another in the last few days and when told my reaction was 'Meh, what's new?" - I completely shocked myself!
Load More Replies...There'll be mass shootings in the US until they finally happen at a place that our right-wing politicians actually care about. That's clearly not our schools.
I don't even watch the news anymore. Everyone I see a flag at half mast (I'm in the US) I just go "Oh, another mass shooting." I don't even go looking for details anymore. Why torture myself? They're all horrible tragedies, all the victims are innocent & there were too many of them. TPTB just offer 'thoughts & prayers' that mean nothing & do even less.
people in the US prioritising people's right to own guns over a child's right to go to school and not get shot supermarkets selling guns but kinder eggs being illegal
MAYBE gun control could diminish the number of mass shootings. Mass homicides will not necessarily be reduced, just had details changed. Humans bent on killing have other options. Inconvenience stopping them seems a bit overly optimistic.
What else will be used to kill a lot of people? Automatic gun is damn effective for that, the only other mass available thing is a car, but how much people you can kill with a car? Not to mention that this killing spree will be stopped by the first decent wall.

Millions of people may starve because the dictator of one country decided to invade another.
Once upon a time stalin took ALL of the food out of Ukraine and sold it to hitler. The starvation was intentional.
Britain did the same thing to Ireland, and then to India.

It's not at all anymore. WW2 and the 50s-60s (before Vietnam got horrendous), and possibly the 80s we're when America was the greatest country in the world. Now? It's a loud, obnoxious, sweaty, obese, entitled, arrogant, country where politicians care more about themselves and being self centered. They've forgotten what representatives we're for, like it was supposed to be about the people. Don't even get me started on healthcare - I was severely injured in a wreck yet flat out refused a ride in ambulance and just got a neck brace then rode there with a friend. And guns, racism, bigotry, and all the reasons people supposedly hate about one another just means we are ranked at the end of great countries
Politicians didn't "forget" about the people they're supposed to represent - they (mostly the GOP) actively worked to immunize themselves from accountability by capturing districting committees, pricing competitors out of running, passing voter suppression laws, purging voter rolls, and helping stack the judicial system with hacks who consistently bend over backwards to help the donor class expand their influence over our govt. Never forget or fail to point out that the current state of the US is due to willful contempt, not mere negligence.

My country loves taking the tax out of me, it’s as if everything I own is theirs….probably how it is.
That is called living in a society. You are part of a group, you contribute, you benefit a lot.
Sorry I’ll explain.. If you lived in Aus you would understand what I mean when I say the tax is unbalanced. Our law finds any way to take hard earned money, especially if your in a prestigious career. It sounds like an ideal society but the way my city does it…it’s just plain unfair. An example, you get paid to have children so some people don’t work and pump out baby’s (not mentioning the level of neglect due to this for the child) but this money is also coming out of hard working earners that decided to get a job and have a career. If it’s that easy why work? That’s the question I hear a lot. It’s not fair on people that work hard their entire life, and the tax goes to ‘helping’ the unfortunate, which isn’t always the case, this system seems to make people prone to laziness. Not to mention if you want a car and you earn a certain amount you have to pay by law an extra tax on top of the payment. And it jacks the price up. I wonder really where the money goes…we all wonder.
Load More Replies...Yeah I agree, it’s very expensive where I live. It becomes excessive in the city. If you earn a decent amount, even if your working hard to get there, the tax takes a massive percentage off your income. And in my opinion although in theory an ideal society, in practice it doesn’t always seem fair.
US here, in the state in which i reside the governor denied us a tax frre weekend on ⛽️… this week they closed out the books and WV has 608 million dollars sitting in a bank not being used. with so many suffering 🥺
Every morning i get to wake up and, before even checking what the weather will be like today, I get to check what times during the next 24 hours, I will be without electricity for several hours. Yay! In South Africa, we currently have what we lovingly refer to as "loadshedding", where our electricity is cut for 2-hour sessions throughout the day (sometimes, as many as three to four sessions in 24 hours), due to our ongoing "energy crisis". Every. D*mn. Day. !. As a mom with a family and someone who works from home, you can imagine how productive a day can be with two to three 2-hour sessions without electricity. Fun fact: this crisis has been ongoing since 2007. Also, without electricity, I have no internet or cellphone service (I'm not sure why, as my husband doesn't have this issue with his cellphone, but we are on different networks, so could be my network's issue). This means that I am unreachable during these sessions. Hopefully there are no emergencies during this time! Also also, apparently "loadshedding" is limited to areas where no important state officials live. So double yay! What a time to be alive!
UK here and my government is discussing on rolling black outs during this winter , as in we will go with out electric at certain times ( usually night time ) up and down the country for an hour or so at a time as we cant get the gas we need to drive our power stations , it's going to be bad as i only have electric , no gas , so if we get cold at night i cant warm my house .
My friend lives in Johannesburg and she has to sleep around 8pm due to boredom.
And if you think, 'frak this' and decide to go solar, you'll face a minimum outlay of at least R125k. Because the bank won't give you a loan under R125k. So now you're paying off the loan for the next X years and STILL have to pay Eskom (frak Eskom) because they charge you a fee when you put in solar. Seriously.
In the last year we've gone from under -50°C to over 50°C. We've had a drought so bad the province caught fire and stayed that way for 2 months, a flood so bad we were under water for over a month. My doctor ordered a biopsy for me three months ago. I'm still saving up just to pay for the test. If it comes back positive I won't be able to afford cancer treatments anyway so I don't know why I'm bothering. Important to note that I have health insurance through my employer, but between the deductible, copays, and coinsurance, I still can't afford it.
I do hope you won’t need to do so, but look into the National Institute of Health in Bethesda MD. A dear friend of mine was able to go through many clinical trials that extended her life. She would fly in from Idaho (flights gifted to her) and friends on this side of the states would go be with her as extra ears and greatly needed shenanigans. I wish you all the best.
Shop around for your employer insurance plans. I had what I thought was good coverage but a biopsy cost me $1,000/year (in deductible only) when I was first diagnosed w/a chronic form of cancer. I switched my job title to get access to another insurance plan & my deductible now is $250/year. Still have copays & the rest, but it won't bankrupt me. Hopefully. A minor surgery last year that included another biopsy was completely covered. Before you ask, yes, this is in the US, same company, jobs funded by different sources w/access to similar but slightly different health plans.
for one you will qualify for treatment if it’s positive because there is a special medicaid dept just for the most serious of the illnesses such as cancer, prayers you don’t have cancer

I began experiencing back pain severe enough to drop me to the floor at age 10. It got worse from there. I'm 45 now and, three spinal surgeries later, I'm 100% grateful I'm able to function as well as I do! I'm constantly in pain but I can manage it with yoga, walking/hiking and tylenol/ibuprofen and an occasional Ativan. I'm fortunate to have access to limited Ativan. Most don't in my country (USA) because of draconian laws around relief-seeking (often labeled "drug seeking" by the medical world). Anyway, I consider myself incredibly fortunate to have made it this far.
Search out others with same diagnosis. Sometimes our own doctors have been wearing blinders for too long and still just try same treatment to diagnosis, not doing enough continuing education on your condition. Contact Universities that have specialists on your diagnosis. Sometimes they can get you into a trial or get you connected with organizations that have made progress in your area of need. I always tell people that even though you don't want to do it for yourself because you have figured out a way to survive dad by day. I tell people to do it for all the others that will follow you on this path. Somewhere, someone may have a unique perspective that may help you or others. Bless you, I am right there with you.
Also contact your doctor or pharmacist to see if they can connect you with some of the pharmaceutical companies, many have assisted prescription programs. I also was referred to a professional medication pharmacy study that thoroughly investigated every medication I have taken and am on so they could make recommendations to my treatment.

Having to pay for water.
i disagree with this one, Water is readily available all over the planet, whether it is safe is another matter, Since man has been flooding fresh water with raw sewage, the water needs to be treated and cleaned so it is safe to drink. We are essentially paying for the treatment and safe transport of water to our homes
And unfortunately, wells are practically banned through zoning regulation loopholes, unless you live out in the boondocks. Probably because wells and pumps are technically competition to water treatment companies. Since people would be benefiting from wells without need for said WT companies, they go crying to the government to basically say, "people are living easily! Make it illegal!"
Load More Replies...That's common everywhere, as it's a way to subsidise the pumping and cleaning stations. In South Africa we only give I think 5000L free after which you have to pay.
In the US none of it is free, but you can get it from lots of places if you need to. In areas where the prices are well regulated it's not so bad. Other places charge more than they should. Honestly, I feel very fortunate about our water situation where I live. We can afford it and we don't have to be careful to do so. There are other things that are not so great here, but water is okay.
Load More Replies...My last water bill for 6 month period was about £120 and we were not even there for most of that due to house repairs. I appreciate that the builders would have turned the water on and off while they were there but it was still a lot higher than I thought. Now the UK government voted to allow the water companies to dump untreated sewage into the sea so beaches are now becoming dangerous. Since water was privatised, the companies have spent so much more on dividends than upgrading the infrastructure.

NO. your tax dollars pay for social services provided at a federal level. If you WANT to live in a country where there's not enough tax money to cover services from government, go take a look at most of africa (except south africa), to see what happens. It's a mess. Basically as soon as you get sick you can choose to die in the street or be healed and become homeless. Oh wait that is YOUR country because your tax money is wasted on your MILITARY. Your tax dollars pay for: military, national parks, roadworks, public libraries, public schooling, covid grants, etc. Even if YOU do not use those things, others do. That's called PART OF BELONGING TO A SOCIETY. If you do not support the poor, they will destroy you. See also: "let them eat cake." That ended on a guillotine. Wake the f**k up.
I love your comment though as a nerdy history loving weirdo I will say that a fair amount of historians think that marie antoinette never actually said “let them eat cake”

I live in Japan and returned home to Canada for the first time since 2019. The prices for everything, from homes to meals, were astronomical. Also, the tip minimums have gone up and many establishments who never asked for tips now do. I'm all for tipping, especially where the worker's wage depends on them, but I wish their employers would offer a living wage and not put the onus on the customer, while pocketing more profits. I know COVID hit everyone hard, but it seems like the wages and salaries have not increased at par with the cost of things and here I find myself paying over $100CAD for a simple breakfast for three, once tax and tips are factored in. The employees need those funds but I feel that the owners have placed the responsibility on the customers rather than do their own part to help the people who keep their establishments alive.
Also, you don't tip in Japan. While the wages for service workers leave a lot to be desired, I like a system where customers pay more for the service and goods and forego the tipping, since it's such a weird dynamic that forces workers to do things to hopefully encourage better tips, while some customers just refuse or under tip. That we are leaving their livelihood to the discretion of the customer is such a bizarre thing to me.
