This is a pretty cool factoid (micro was one of my favorite subjects in college) but it's not exclusive to influenza; viruses in general have a coating called a capsid that protects the material inside while allowing it to attach to the host cell and replicate/infect.

That's actually not surprising to me. The main way radiation kills living organisms is via DNA Damage. The most susceptible is DNA being decoded, as unused DNA is curled up and will less likely be damaged by radiation. The faster stuff grows the more susceptible to radiation damage (that's why radiating tumors works). As a bonsai is by design being kept withing very strict growing boundaries it has a much higher chance of surviving radiation than a normal growing counterpart. Plus fact: there is a bacterial species called Deinococcus radiodurans which as you may have guessed ist extremely durable towards radiation, they do this via very good DNA repair mechanism but also low metabolism and division rates.

Ravens are considered to be among the most intelligent of birds (along with other members of the corvid family, e.g., crows, jays, magpies, etc.). They make and use tools and can solve simple problems.

Makes sense. Character relations often leak into relations amongst actors. Same reason actors playing love interests often fall in love for real.

Aside from the hypothesis being 80 years old, little dogs living half this, and chickens also being an outlier - us having longer lifespans than 35 years is nothing to do with modern stuff. People historically lived to 60/80/90, General Cao Cao was 65 when he died in the 3rd century of a brain tumour. Lif expectancy was lower in the past but that was because of the high infant mortality rate bringing the number down, not people dropping dead in their 30s.

My parents used to cook the foods I hated the most (liver and onions, tuna casserole) on Halloween because their rule was if I didn't eat my dinner, I couldn't go trick o'treating, so I wouldn't get any candy because they believed it made me hyperactive. I was just a bored and lonely kid in our family. I was 11 when I went trick o'treating with friends for the 1st time.

Actually it is the sugar drop that comes after the rush of insulin into the blood that creates the hyper activity. As someone with hypoglycemia I can confirm that. When the blood sugar plummets quickly the body forces glycogen into the blood. The whole process can make one very agitated if you are prone to blood sugar dropping too far from insulin flooding the bloodstream.

That, and the hyper behavior is often seen at events involving lots of sugar. Halloween. Birthdays, etc. in reality, the kids are hyped up because of the situation they’re in. In short, they’re having fun!

When they study this they do double blind studies. The kids don't know if they're getting real sugar or not and the parents don't know who has actually had sugar or not. Then they have the parents rate the level of hyperactivity. The parents cannot accurately gauge who has had sugar based on behavior. Proving the sugar theory false. And it's been replicated many times. You see what you expect to see.

Because red dye number 40 is recognized as causing behaviour changes in kids with ADHD. It's also been linked with exacerbating asthma, eczema, and migraines in some people

My son has ADHD and the school made me stop sending him to school with chocolate milk bc they thought that's what was making him hyper. I'm like there is no evidence sugar makes kids hyper, but fine. So now poor nugget has water. Still hyperactive.

So, as a parent of two super hyperactive ADhD girls (one lower on spectrum, the other more so) these kinds of uninformed comments are really annoying. Diet is really important. Sugary foods are almost always combined with food additives and colourings, which do make my girls go crazy (also cough medicine etc). So no kid is sitting there eating out of the sugar bowl, but they may be drinking soft drink, or eating lollies etc. so yes- I avoid sugary foods (homemade stuff and parties different) because I don't want to put them in a situation where they get yelled at.

It was proven in a separate study decades ago that it is in fact the colourants (or E numbers in europe) that are so bad for the children and adults alike that cause hyperactivity, palpitations, rashes (for eczema and psoriasis suffers an outbreak) and anxiety due to heart rate increase.

Often sugar is eaten at birthday parties, holidays, or at a fast food place. These are exciting events for kids, so the atmosphere I think has more to do with it. Also if it's a food they don't get as much of as they'd like, they'll definitely be hyper and excited.

TF it isn't true. It maybe a YMMV thing but with at least one of my grandkids was absolutely could tell. Including a couple of times when we thought whatever food or drink was sugar free and then checked more closely because of how he was acting after consuming. This may be a matter of splitting hairs on wording. From an article debunking 'sugar high'. " sugar causes the brain to release dopamine and opioids — chemicals that give us a feeling of pleasure. The jolt of energy we feel might likely be from the jolt of dopamine" So... maybe it was that. But there was definite cause /effect going on with one grandchild getting out of control after eating sugar. Repeatedly and over time. I think he has outgrown it now or just has more restraint as he is 18 now.

This is not true for kids with ADHD according to studies. In addition synthetic dyes in many sugary drinks and candy have also been shown to affect hyperactivity in nerodiverse children. Red dye number 40 specifically is linked to behavioral issues in kids with ADHD with estimates of 1/3 of being sensitive. It's recommended to avoid if you or your child has ADHD.

Sugar stimulates dopamine in the brain and also natural opioid production, which then goes below baseline when the effect wears off. It also causes blood sugar to rise, then fall, which contributes to crankiness.

But sugar is addicting and it hits the pleasure centers of the brain releasing a flood of dopamine thru the neural pathways. Dopamine is the feel good hormone, so maybe this is what they meant by sugar high. And of course all that sugar gives them lots of energy… making little kids wired. So maybe there’s more to it, I dunno.

Balderdash. You have never taught Elementary school have you? First hand experience of dealing with kids who ate sweets for lunch then ran all over the room trying to wear off the sugar overload. Case in point I had a cute little kinder student who was hyper and got in trouble every day for his behavior. Nice kid just a hand full. I asked him one day on a Lark what he had for breakfast. He told me his mom took him to the convenience store every morning and bought him a soda and a package of white powdered donuts for breakfast. I told him to let his momma know he needed oatmeal or something with a lot less sugar in it. He was a little guy and his body could not handle all that sugar. I let his classroom teacher know. I was his Art teacher.
