Everyone can find a way to spend their free time that’s both entertaining and useful to them. The options for this are unlimited, from reading books to exercising and crafts. It all comes down to figuring out what you like so you deem that activity worthy of your time.

As we said, one of these options is crafts. Like knitting and crocheting. That’s what we’re focusing on today. To be more specific: these memes perfectly summarize what it’s like to be an enthusiast of these crafts.

Now I have a sudden urge to learn knitting

RELATED:

While, sometimes, people tend to think that crocheting and knitting are the same thing, they actually are not. Basically, the many differences lie in the processes. For instance, knitting is done by two needles, while crocheting is done by one. Also, knitting moves sets of live stitches from needle to needle, and crochet works with one live stitch at a time.

Both of these crafts work with yarn and can create various objects, from sweaters and scarves to dolls or home accessories. The sky's the limit.

Bored Panda reached out to Norman from “Nimble Needles.” Norman has been knitting for over 30 years, so we asked him some questions about this hobby

He said that the most fulfilling aspect of knitting for him is the process itself: “It’s almost like meditation to me, and it really helps me to unwind in the evening.”

Norman believes that planning every knitting project with your time constraints is a must: “If you know that you will be very busy the next month, I personally would pick a smaller project. Otherwise, it can quickly lead to frustration.”

Yet, sometimes, when he feels frustrated with a project’s challenges, he doesn’t overanalyze it. He declared that it’s a hobby. It should bring joy, and if there’s a period where it doesn’t -- it’s not the end of the world.

Unless it's a big mistake, just let it be and say, "that's how you know it was hand made and not on a big machine."

4 Happy, 3 neutral, 2 not pleased at all. I'd say overall Grandma did good!

Unfortunately, some people still believe that knitting is only for old people or women. Norman debunked this claim, saying that, for centuries, knitting was a predominantly male occupation. As a matter of fact, women weren’t even allowed in medieval knitting guilds.

He also added that in today's world, he feels things like this shouldn’t be restricted to any social group: “I find the very idea that any hobby or craft was limited to a certain age group or gender preposterous.”

But is is made out of plastic and will not last a season much less a lifetime. And every stitch that is knitted with the $200 worth of yarn is made with lots of love, curses and wine. So much better than just handing over a ten dollar note.

My sister knit me real woolen sweaters. You can't buy that quality.

If you could buy one made with the $200 quality yarn, it would cost twice the price, still be made by underpaid workers, and be too long in the sleeves

Because this one was probably made by little children in a sweatshop.

Because usually the one that's 9.99 is made out of the most disgusting feeling, cheap acrylic that will look good for approximately 2 wears before pilling and matting so badly that it's unwearable. If I make it, I can use wool or viscose or cotton that doesn't feel like I'm rubbing a bin bag on my skin.

The $200 yarn is probably much better quality, real cotton or wool instead of recycled rubbish. The garment was made by you instead of by a semi-slave worker in a sweatshop in China, Bangladesh or wherever. It's unique, it fits you perfectly and you can choose the exact colour, thickness, length, etc. Yours, if you get good quality materials, will last forever, while the cheap one from the shop will start to lose shape and colour after the second wash. The process of making it will help your brain and your hands to keep active, and, if it's a hobby and your next meal doesn't depend on finishing a certain number of pieces every day, it's relaxing.

With that $200, you are not only buying a sweater, you are buying hours of entertainment, fun, and sense of accomplishment.

Because $9.99 isn't a realistic price for this sweater, and some poor soul in a remote country gets 1/2 penny for making it?

$20 of yarn depending on what kind you get.

For those who worry that knitting might be a dying hobby in the current times, Norman has some good news. He thinks that there wasn’t a single time in history when knitwear was consumed as much as in these days. “Go to any cloth store, and you will find knitted garments. A lot of people may forget that even a jersey is a knitted fabric. In the case of luxury labels, some of their knitwear will even be hand-knitted or hand-crocheted.”

Knitting can also be an answer to the fast-fashion dilemma. As Norman said, it can reintroduce value into people’s wardrobes: “If you’ve spent 40 hours knitting a sweater, you probably won’t discard it at the end of the season. And being aware of that fact, you will spend more time on picking a material that will last and a design that will still be relevant next year.”

The older I get the more I avoid those fluffy, feathery, fancy yarns for that precise reason. Besides being dam near impossible to pull out a mistake, keeping track of stitches you can’t see gives me heartburn…

Yeah, and most of the time they are ‘fake-knitting’, or knitting so slow it’s impossible they have achieved this beautiful long scarf
