Sometimes parents want to be 'relatable' and 'cool', so they use meme references and words like 'lit' but these things don't cut it. All these desperate attempts do is just embarrass their kids. However, if they try something really ridiculous, it brings them even more shame. They end up on the subreddit /r/InsaneParents.

The online community describes itself as "a weird place where you can post those crazy parents who post in those woo-woo anti-vax groups on Facebook and do things harmful (directly and indirectly) to their children. We want to be a place where people can come and both get support and laugh. So this sub is a mixture of both the heartbreaking and the hilarious. Come and join us. Especially if you have your own stories to tell or your own social media content to post." Below you will find some of their most popular posts.

I hope the child of this awful woman stuck to "you're done", but I have a feeling this wasn't the first and won't be the last time her mother behaves this way. She didn't even express surprise that her mother spoke that way.

Bored Panda has already published two posts about the subreddit (here and here) but it looks like there's no shortage of insane moms and dads; people keep posting more and more parenting horror stories. Even though the subreddit was created relatively recently, in 2017, it already unites over 1.2 million members, with thousands online at any given moment.

It's normal for parents and their kids to have different views and opinions. In fact, they can be used for growth, too. Vicki Broadbent, founder of Honest Mum and author of Mumboss, is one of those parents who are open to learning from their children as much as they want to teach them. "They've taught me a lot from feeling more confident when I've been trolled online, to how to create a TikTok video!" she told Bored Panda. "My kids aged 10 and 8 respectively are both creative, empathetic, resilient, and strong-willed little humans. We base our relationships on open conversations and trust. I think the art of listening has been lost somewhat, and rather than being didactic as a parent, we need to practice listening more (and really hearing) to others' points of view, before sharing our own views.

Broadbent acknowledges that parents have the responsibility to inform, protect, and guide their kids, however, she thinks that children who feel endlessly chastised and forced to conform will do the complete opposite. "You have more chance of persuading your children to do the right thing if you are calm in the way you present your opinions."

"Encouraging children to talk to you honestly without judgement means they will always come to you when they're in trouble. It's also healthy they learn that no one will ever always agree with one another. Another lost art is that of debating!"

When Rebekah Tayebi, a clinical therapist and family coach, looks at toxic family systems, one thing that becomes really evident to her is seeing that the children are more attuned to the needs of the parents. That means, the typical parent-child relationship is inverted and there's confusion about what appropriate boundaries should be in place.

"The hard part for children in these environments is that which is like so many of us, is that we might start to mirror the dysfunction that we're seeing," Tayebi said. That's the reason why it's so important to start to catch negative patterns in the moment and try to eradicate them.

"Parenting is hard, there's no manual, we're all simply trying to navigate our children through choppy waters and this ever challenging life to be kind and strong," Broadbent concluded. "We also want them to have fun. Childhood is precious. I also think showing my own children my own vulnerabilities has encouraged greater empathy in them and they've understood early on that I'm a real human being not a womb on legs."

What some parents apparently forget is that they need their kids just as much as their little ones need them. When Broadbent had a big operation on her thyroid, for example, she was amazed to find just how much her children can support her during a difficult time.

I don't know, maybe some of the parent-child relationships we see on r/InsaneParents are beyond saving. But I hope they can at least act as a reminder for the rest of us to cherish ours.

I am also a Member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and I also think that it is very absurd to judge a whole religion based on a few bad apples. If you actually knew anything about our church then you would know how much we help the community. I'm not here to argue and I dont care what you think about me but I love the members of my church and it hurts to see you say something like that about all of them. We do not pressure anyone to join our church and we completely defend gay rights. I personally have helped my community and communities all around. I live in Texas and so during hurricane Harvey thousands of volunteers went out and helped for countless hours every day and just recently I went out and helped with another huge hurricane in Louisiana. Also our missionaries do not harass anyone in fact they are the ones that get harassed most of the time. Did you know that the church doesn;t pay for missionaries to go on missions? Do you know how long a mission is?

Navek Baird

I'm an active member. I could tell from the beginning this was an LDS parent. Unfortunately some, very few, parents are like this in our church. Just like every church, there are strict and oppressive parents to their kids. I was lucky enough to be raised by my single mother who allowed me the freedom to choose whatever I wanted to do at a young age. In my own personal experience, I never felt pressured, guilt-tripped, or forced to do anything. I did, however, choose to go to church because I found that the gospel of Jesus Christ uplifted my life in every way. By giving me the agency to choose, yet still be a good example and always have unconditional love, I found my way in faith. This is one principal our church teaches but it's sometimes hard to do. This can be a lesson to any parent in the church or to any loving parent that wants their loved ones to be successful and happy. This isn't to go without saying that children will sometimes choose another path. But Love never faileth!

@Vincent Philippart, I know that you don't agree with me, and I am not a Mormon so I can't speak for them either, but your behaviour is outrageous. I know that my friends have told me in the bible that Jesus says to forgive people and be kind to them even if they stamp on your throat, but I strongly believe I am making a really good point here; this woman in the picture is disgusting. no one should ever force ANYTHING onto anyone. in the bible, Jesus respected and loved people who hated and betrayed him, and its clear you haven't read it, so please don't talk about things you don't understand. I know you don't agree with me, but this is being mean, and I kind of count it as cyberbullying. no one on here who has stated their opinion has belittled you or defended this woman or said "this is what our religion is based of and all of you who don't believe it can go f*ck." NO-ONE! I'm not trying to sound mean or defending what anyone has done, and you probably have your reasons for saying

4736251
Community Member

those things, so technically I can't speak for anything you say or assume I know what you feel, so I'm very sorry for that, but this is just not okay. also some of the kindliest, friendliest people I know go to church and they would never hurt a fly and they love and respect everyone who is Islam or Buddhist or shinto. I hope I have made myself clear. thank you.

My dad is a pastor, and he would understand fully if, for some reason, I wasn't able to attend because of a job. This is why people think Christians are insane, which is just not true.

This reminds me of a few years back when the pastor of a local church started calling me, trying to get me to attend his services. After repeatedly telling him that I had no interest in going, he actually came to my house. My husband confronted him outside and told him if he didn't leave me alone we would have to call the police. It was then that he admitted my mother and sister had asked him to try and pressure me into coming to his church.
