Jimmy Kimmel’s popular talk show Jimmy Kimmel Live! was pulled off television indefinitely on September 17 after he made “insensitive” comments about the late Charlie Kirk.

The 31-year-old conservative activist lost his life in a fatal attack during an event at Utah Valley University on September 10.

While discussing the situation on his show, the comedian made “offensive” remarks that did not sit well with the broadcasting network.

Highlights
  • Jimmy Kimmel’s late-night talk show Jimmy Kimmel Live! was pulled indefinitely after he mocked Donald Trump’s reaction to Charlie Kirk’s passing.
  • Broadcasting group Nexstar confirmed the suspension, saying the show will remain off-air “for the foreseeable future.”
  • The move sparked backlash online, with stars like Ben Stiller, Sophia Bush, and more defending Kimmel.

“So, freedom of speech only applies when it’s something they want to hear?” commented one user online.

During the September 15 episode, Kimmel spoke about the right-wing political commentator’s untimely passing after he was fatally struck in the neck by an armed assailant.

The suspect, 22-year-old Tyler Robinson, has since been identified and charged with first-degree homicide.

Taking a dig at President Trump’s “Make America Great Again” slogan, commonly associated with him and his supporters, Jimmy addressed Robinson’s arrest.

“We hit some new lows over the weekend with the MAGA gang desperately trying to characterize this kid who m***dered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them and doing everything they can to score political points from it.”

He then commented on a viral clip of Trump speaking to reporters outside the White House, mocking his “grieving” as the president was reportedly close friends with Kirk.

“In between the finger-pointing, there was grieving. On Friday, the White House flew the flags at half staff, which got some criticism, but on a human level, you can see how hard the president is taking this.”

A clip of the President was then shown where, when asked by a reporter how he was holding up following the passing of Kirk, he replied, “I think very good, and by the way, right there where you see all the trucks, they just started construction of the new ballroom for the White House.”

The comedian quipped to this, “Yes, he’s at the fourth stage of grief, construction. This is not how an adult grieves the m**der of someone he called a friend.”

“There’s something wrong with him, there really is. Who thinks like that?”

However, these remarks were “strongly” objected to by broadcasting group Nexstar, which announced the temporary cancellation of the ABC show.

On September 8, two documents from the now-disgraced Jeffrey Epstein‘s 50th-birthday album revealed the U.S. President’s signature, one on a risque line drawing of a female body and one on a picture of Epstein holding up a novelty check with Trump’s name.

Kimmel concluded his remarks in the episode by commenting on Trump’s “$200 million” White House ballroom project, suggesting it might be a decoy to distract from his connection to Epstein.

Trump couldn’t give a s**t about Kirk’s death except for the political capital it’s given him. Neither Trump nor Kirk cared less for dead schoolchildren as they’re both in the pocket of the NRA and it apparently was acceptable collateral damage. I’m betting he’ll be pressing the US pope for Kirk to be canonised next. The US seems like a parallel universe where everything is totally f****d up.

You know people should've known that Hitler would k**l millions of innocent people? Because Hitler justified murdering millions of innocent people. That's how you know you're evil: when you justify murdering people who have not m******d anyone. I've published Hitler's N**i platform and gotten modern liberals to agree with everything except for one detail: Hitler didn't want to tax or imprison storekeepers who made a profit, for instance; he wanted them dead. I changed that (and held back that it was the N**i party platform) when I asked people if they agreed with it... and told them after the fact. Because my point was to show them that Hitler was not a conservative, but a liberal (in the U.S. senses of the words), not to prove that they were Nazis. Because no-one thinks Hitler is a monster because of his economic opinions, but rather because he m******d innocent people.

Kirk was a racist, homophobic, misogynistic d-bag. He spewed evil and lies to enrage the idiot base. He didn't deserve to be shot, no one does. The USA had free speech until the government was overtaken by pathetic losers who want to control people ala North Korea.

I heard trumps comment on the news. And the way he didn't transition from "he's a great guy and I'll miss him..." right to "and look at the construction of my ballroom..." was like poof! It was almost one sentence! SO, making fun of that, I get - but as many have stated "it's only free speech if the (right or left) don't disagree."

Which is a dark ages conservative Republican who doesn't believe in gay, lgbtq, women's, etc rights. They'll take us right back to the days of slavery and misogyny. For anyone that doesn't know. The FCC is a federal institution. They forced ABC to cancel Kimmel or lose their broadcasting license. 100% against the first ammendment of the constitution (since Kimmel did not break their rules)

For anyone who knows the FCC conspiracy theory has had zero evidence provided to support it, and all actual information counters it. 4 hours before ABC canceled him, Nextar which owns the ABC stations in 40% of US Markets said they were dropping the show, and an hour after that Sinclair, the second largest owner of ABC stations, said that if Disney didnt fire Kimmel, they would drop the show as well, 3 hours after that ABC fired him. The FCC Conspiracy has no evidence and doesnt even make sense given the actual factually confirmed details of what happened. When the majority of your stations say they wont carry a show anymore, you cancel the show, especially when you are paying a guy $16 million dollars to a guy who averages 1.95 million viewers a night for a show losing money.

There has been so much violence inflicted by the right, which they don't talk about. What happened to Kirk is not ok. It is not how a democracy should operate. But the right are every bit as culpable for the rise in political violence. We either all condemn it, or we all consider it acceptable.

There's a lot of terms going around that I feel aren't being used properly and contributing to all this swirl. "Freedom of Speech" specifically outlines that you cannot be punished BY THE GOVERNMENT for speech that has not already been defined as illegal ("fire" in a theater, inciting violence, slander, etc.). While what ABC did was reprehensible, it is not an infringement of the 1st amendment. "Hate Speech" - there are definite legal definitions for what constitutes "hate speech". "I don't like it" doesn't qualify.

The FCC threatened to remove ABC's broadcasting licence if they didn't remove Kimmel. The FCC is a federal institution so this is absolutely a case of the government punishing a citizen for perfectly legal speech, a direct infringement of the 1st. Amendment.

So, I want to boycott whatever this new thing is that ABC wants to buy so bad. ABC should have stood by Kimmel and taken this all the way to the Supreme Court if their FCC license was not granted. Instead they think they're going to make a bunch of money. If half the population boycotts this new venture they're trying to start it won't be profitable.

A satirical tale of a US president about to go on sèxual a***e charges, so he asks a film-maker to create a fictional 'war' against Albania to draw attention away from this. Although it's from 1997, it's like the Trump admin is using it as their playbook. When satire becomes the truth, you know you're living in hèll.

So Kirk got to say "If I'm dealing with somebody in customer service who's a moronic Black woman, I wonder is she there because of her excellence, or is she there because of affirmative action?" but Kimmel can't say what he said? Interesting definition of free speech you have there. Maybe Vance might want to stop bleating about how we don't have it here in Europe until he understands that, apparently, you don't have it there in the US either.

Drawing lines around protected speech can be tricky. But in this case, there’s a clear standard any honest Republican could accept: Nobody should be pursued or punished by the government for saying the kinds of things Kirk himself said. Here’s a list. (from The Bulwark)

First they took away due process of law. Now it's free speech. What's next, freedom of assembly? Are they going to start shooting protesters in the streets?

Of course, but they won't call them protesters, they'll say they were violent insurrectionists.

While I think this was not the right call by ABC (regardless of the conspiracy theory he pushed about the shooter really being double super secret maga), lets break it down. 1) They are a private company, and any speech done in an official capacity for them, they have the right to fire based on (different than if he just did it on his own social). 2) First one of the Media companies whose ABC affiliate franchisees is 30% of all ABC viewers, whose CEO was a TPUSA Funder said his affiliates would stop carrying the program (which is his right in the contract), without his stations, ABC felt it was better to just cancel the show. 3) ABC has had over a dozen meetings since 2022 about Kimmel's show losing money (not the $40 million a year Colbert was losing before he was cancelled, but Kimmel has lost ABC money and not pulled a profit for years already), and I think they were looking for an excuse to sack him, to cut their financial losses, but were afraid to do so and this gave it to them

Logic doesn't matter - if you can get a large enough group of people living paycheck to paycheck to be outraged over the firing of a multimillionaire, what makes you think they care about the definition of free speech?

Kimmel wasn't cancelled because he was 'offensive' (or funny). He was using his national platform to propagate false info. He knowingly made statements that were false in order to blame the side that didn't do it for a murder.

WTG ABC. Way to dodge the fury of the right wings by shutting down someone who spoke words that don't agree with their thinking. The whole purpose of talk shows is to TALK about current events et al. We've become a society with no backbone and so sensitive that practically everything anyone says anymore is scrutinized and judged so harshly, many people don't want to talk at all. What Kimmel said could have been a bit out of line but to shut the show down? A bit extreme.

"The American media totally ignored this stuff until Donald Trump and I started talking about cat memes. If I have to create stories so that the American media actually pays attention to the suffering of the American people, then that’s what I’m going to do." - The US Vice President stating that they will lie to the public to further their hateful ends. It's not about being "cancelled". No one really cares about that. No fully formed adult, at least...I can't speak for the right wingers who constantly $hit their pants about it, though. It's about actual freedom of speech, and how the Trump administration has influenced/controlled public discourse. That's the problem, and everyone should be concerned about that. Today it's in your favor, tomorrow, it might not be.

as long as it was ABC, on their own, who decided to cancel Jimmy, that is not a violation of the 1st amendment, as ABC is not part of the government. HOWEVER, and i don't know if this is true, but i heard that the FCC threatened ABC over this and that's why they fired Jimmy Kimmel. if that is true, that is a violation of the 1st amendment.

its a conspiracy with zero evidence to back up. What happened was Nextar, the largest owner of ABC stations in the country dropped the show, losing 40% of markets and 30% of all ABC viewers, and then an hour after that Sinclair, the second largest owner of ABC stations told Disney to fire Kimmel or they would drop the show (both companies CEO's were personal donors to TPUSA and MAGA causes), with the show having lost money 4 years in a row now, and with over half the stations in the country dropping the show, they canceled it. It was that simple. A show losing money, when half the stations carrying it want it gone, you kinda need to cut your losses. But there is zero evidence other than people theorizing that the FCC or feds had anything to do with it, it was the stations demanding it.

So Kirk got to say "If I'm dealing with somebody in customer service who's a moronic Black woman, I wonder is she there because of her excellence, or is she there because of affirmative action?" but Kimmel can't say what he said? Interesting definition of free speech you have there. Drawing lines around protected speech can be tricky. But in this case, there’s a clear standard any honest Republican could accept: Nobody should be pursued or punished by the government for saying the kinds of things Kirk himself said. Here’s a list. (from The Bulwark)

Downvoted for demonstrating the hypocrisy of the maga cult? I will wear it like a badge of honour.

First they took away due process of law. Now it's free speech. What's next, freedom of assembly? Are they going to start shooting protesters in the streets?

Of course, but they won't call them protesters, they'll say they were violent insurrectionists.

It is somewhat curious that several posts from this discussion on "free speech" seem to have been removed without explanation, is it not?

Most of us have been for years. That's why network ratings are so low while Netflix/Youtube/etc control most of the media market now.

These are the rules the liberals established. What did he say when Rosanne Barr was kicked off her show at the request of President Obama or President Trump was kicked off Twitter?

But comedians must get everything right all the time or they will be punished.

"It's such a funny feeling to find that you've fallen to a totalitarian state" - from the oddly upbeat and catchy song "Totalitarian State" by David Johansen and Mercury Rev. America was a grand experiment, but it is a failed experiment 😪 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AeoK116mjEM&list=RDAeoK116mjEM&start_radio=1

There's never been a real freedom of speech anywhere. Those who got riled up about this Kimmel case, will rise on the barricades if someone makes a joke about trąnnies. Freedom of speech is very selective.

Do you know what the term "freedom of speech" means? It doesn't sound like it. People getting upset over a joke is free speech vs free speech. Trump is the government and actually killing free speech. Stupid people like you is how we get Trump.

why? bc a private company fired an employee getting paid $16 million a year, after their 2 biggest franchisees that own half their station dropped a TV show, which forced the network to fire the guy?

To be fair the left has canceled many people as well for saying things they did not agree with. I don't think it's right on either side, but we can't pretend this is the first and only instance of someone losing their job over their public comments.

Canceling Kimmel is wrong. However, I watched The Man Show back in the day with him and Adam Carolla. He did a blackface impersonation of Karl Malone among other things. I just can’t accept that he can change his beliefs 180 degrees like that. I think he’s all about the money and fame.
