To make our lives easier and more comfortable, people have always come up with new inventions and most of them have been really useful, like cutlery or medicine to treat illnesses that were once incurable. But there are inventions that benefit humans less and may even be dangerous.

We all probably have looked at something, couldn’t understand the purpose of it and thought that it was unnecessary to invent it. Redditor numbnerve wanted to know what people think is the invention we would be better off without and over 22k people joined the discussion with some serious answers.

Don’t forget to upvote the redditors’ answers you agree with the most and if there is something you think belongs in this list and wasn't mentioned, leave it in the comments!

I'll tell you why: They render large tracts of land completely unusable They are expensive and difficult to remove safely because there is seldom documentation of where they are placed They are cheap, plentiful, easy to place, and deadly They kill/maim livestock and wild animals They kill/maim innocent people decades after conflicts have ended. Many times the victims are children because they can't read or don't understand warning signs

The UK doesn't have so much trouble with these thanks to the Telephone Preference Service, which allows people to opt-out of sales calls. This works for legitimate companies, but unfortunately the scammers don't abide by the rules. I have a Raspberry Pi with a Fax Modem that monitors incoming calls on my landline and answers as a fax machine to unknown numbers or numbers I have blocked. Really we should be beyond this, but the telecommunications industry doesn't seem to want to fix it.

A friend in the trade told me 2 things that you can do. A crush test; crumple the fabric in your hand; if it returns to flat shape, no wrinkles, it's good. Look at the number of stiches per inch in the stitching, buy 8 per inch or better. Thanks Gordon

That has nothing to do with fast fashion. Cotton and linnen for example always wrinkle. But wearing clothes made of plastic (polyester, acrylic) wrinkle way less. (Yet they leave microplastics in the water every wash, so that doesn't sound like a better choice.)

I stopped buying fast fashion about 7 years ago. Cut my closet down by around 70%. I just buy far less clothing and buy good clothing when I need it. I use to love shopping but now I absolutely hate it. Completely changed my mindset. Mostly I buy thrifted stuff for my work clothing, then nice things for nights out or events. My clothes take up half a standard closet.

I used to buy from thrift stores but the past few years, they have started spraying the clothes with some strong smelling stuff, probably a disinfectant of some sort, and it does NOT wash out, ever. Do they do that everywhere now? I don't like wearing perfumes or scented things.

I nearly stopped buying clothes around 10 years ago because they are all see-through. Once in a while, I'll find one that isn't and will get it even though it's not something I like. I basically just shop to keep myself covered so my company won't fire me.

My rule for shopping is - if I can't see myself wearing that same thing 10 - 15 years from now (provided my body does not change significantly during that time), I don't buy it. That means checking it for quality that the item won't disintegrate and ensuring it's not a style or color that is a fad. Also learning some basic sewing skills to patch up holes can repair clothing that otherwise might have to get discarded.

No that is not the only issue. The production process is a critical issue too. Often fast and cheap fassion brands has issues with how they treat the workers, who are often poorly payed working under critisiseable conditions: long hours with short breaks, inhumane temperatures and humidities, and a high pace requirement and child labor. Furthermore the fassion industry is requirering a lot of the limited resources on this planet and is in many cases emits a lot of untreated contanimated wastewater directly into the local enviroment. In genral the handling of the chemicals are lacking and many workes do not have the proper personal protection. Instead of accepting fasion trends we should instead aim for building a "stable" wardrobe with quality clothes that can be used for several years. E.g. I have many single colour dressshirts that I have used for years in combinations with chinoes or straight up and down jeans, that only gets thrown out when worn down.

Aren’t loot boxes classified as gambling now? I remember reading something like that or that they should be classed as gambling.
