People Are Standing Up For Johnny Depp With These 40 Memes While Others Disagree
This week, American actor Johnny Depp lost a libel suit he filed in London, suing the newspaper The Sun for calling him a "wife beater" in one of their articles, a reference to his relationship with ex-wife Amber Heard. The case was ugly, dragging both actors' private lives into the spotlight. It was complicated, too; each accused the other of abuse.
British libel law works differently from the American version. In the US, the burden of proof for libel is on the person claiming to have been libeled — that is, the plaintiff has to demonstrate that what was written is false (at least in cases involving matters of public concern). In the UK, the burden of proof is on the party accused of libel — that is, The Sun had to prove that the things published about Depp were true. A judge held that 12 of 14 of Heard's accusations of abuse met the threshold for truth in civil court. Depp's attorneys say they plan to appeal. (Depp is also suing Heard for defamation in a U.S. court after she published an op-ed in The Washington Post identifying herself as a survivor of sexual and physical violence.)
On the Internet, it seems that Johnny Depp has a lot of people by his side. Twitter, Reddit, and other platforms are being flooded with memes, supporting the actor. There are, however, those who disagree with them.

Johnny Depp and Amber Heard met when he was a 45-year-old father of two living with his longtime partner, Vanessa Paradis, and she was 22. A few years later, Depp and Heard married and soon divorced. In 2016, Heard filed for divorce from Depp and also obtained a temporary restraining order. Her allegations that Depp was physically and verbally abusive while using drugs and alcohol were soon widely publicized. She alleged that at the time of filing for divorce, an incident had taken place during which Depp threw his phone at her, leaving her with a bruised face. However, a police spokesman told People that an investigation into the domestic incident radio call found that no crime had taken place.
Depp denied the accusations against him and through his representatives said Heard was "attempting to secure a premature financial resolution by alleging abuse."
Heard testified under oath at a deposition, but she withdrew her request for a domestic violence restraining order and a settlement was reached. According to People, Heard received $7 million from the divorce but donated it to charity. She also canceled her spousal support request of $50,000 a month.
"Our relationship was intensely passionate and at times volatile, but always bound by love. Neither party has made false accusations for financial gain," Depp and Heard said in a then-released joint statement. "There was never any intent of physical or emotional harm." Their divorce was finalized a year after Heard filed.
The Hollywood Reporter said that a non-disparagement clause was inserted into the settlement that prevented either party from saying anything negative about the high-profile relationship and break-up.
In December 2018, Heard wrote an op-ed for The Washington Post saying she was abused but Depp was not mentioned by name.
In 2019, Depp sued Heard for $50 million for defamation over the article. The suit said that Heard "is not a victim of domestic abuse, she is a perpetrator," and denied that Depp ever abused her. Instead, the suit said that Heard's allegations were part of an "elaborate hoax to generate positive publicity" for the actress.
"The op-ed depended on the central premise that Ms. Heard was a domestic abuse victim and that Mr. Depp perpetrated domestic violence against her," Depp's lawyers said.
In a court filing that attempted to dismiss Depp's defamation suit, Heard recalled multiple instances of alleged abuse that she said occurred during their marriage and referred to him as "the Monster."
The word "men" isn't supposed to be capitalized. There's no such thing as "men's culture". Men aren't a distinct ethnicity or something. Just use it like normal, instead of like you're trying to get an op ed in the bible or something. Still, f**k Amber Heard.
In 2020, phone recordings obtained by the Daily Mail were released where Heard admitted to "hitting" Depp.
Heard is heard saying: "I'm sorry that I didn't ... hit you across the face in a proper slap, but I was hitting you, it was not punching you. Babe, you're not punched.
"I don't know what the motion of my actual hand was, but you're fine, I did not hurt you, I did not punch you, I was hitting you."
"I left last night. Honestly, I swear to you because I just couldn't take the idea of more physicality, more physical abuse on each other," Depp said in the recording. "Because had we continued it, it would have gotten f---ing bad. And baby, I told you this once. I'm scared to death we are a f---ing crime scene right now."
Heard responded: "I can't promise you I won't get physical again. God, I f---ing sometimes get so mad I lose it."
Sharon Osbourne has weighed in on Johnny Depp's high-profile "wife beater" trial, saying on CBS' "The Talk" that Depp and his ex-wife Amber Heard were "as bad as each other" and that she could understand the pair's relationship because she once had a similar dynamic with her husband, Ozzy. Many Internet commenters also share this opinion.
Haha, he entertains the children with pirates, and the parents with rum jokes.
I think if a concentration camp inmate killed a guard while escaping and was called "murderer" by the Sun, this judge would, upon reviewing all available evidence, rule in Sun's favour...
Yeah pretty accurate, I’ve never heard of her until she married Johnny Depp.
Yep. There were literally voice recordings of her mocking him and emotionally attacking him presented AT THE COURT. Yet, for some reason, even with a freaking proof like this and testimonies of people close to both Johnny and Amber that were speaking AGAINST AMBER, he still lost.
Load More Replies...I believe him. He was never an abuser, never abused his first wife. Amber is the abuser and I am very angry at her. She is making the real abused women and men look really bad.
Drives me nuts when women in movies/tv slap or hit men. Not funny. Will never be funny. (Except the old granny gang in Monty Python and their purses)
🖕u Amber. me: 🙏 praying that her career will fall off a cliff along with her
Yep, got the bish on hot mic saying it. You think she didn't manipulate Johnny and try to leach off his career and connections. Her own Manager dropped her after what happened between them. You actually think this GREEDY WENCH DONATED 8 MILLION DOLLARS OF HIS MONEY TO CHARITY?! Okay. WTF even heard of this 🗑🗑 before Rum Diary? 🙄🙄🤔🤔🤔🐁🐁🐁🐁

Load More Replies...no she should die. doesn't matter how quick it is, as long as it's painful and agonizing I'm fine with that. no one should have to see her nasty face forever..
Load More Replies...Google, unnecessarily: did you mean "How do I help JOHNNY depp?". Thanks Sheldon...oops I mean Google XD ;)

Whatever the truth? Getting treated unfairly and being told, "No one will believe you!" is pretty common to ALL victims of abuse of any gender, race, etc.. Ditto ridiculously unfair outcomes.
So true. Victims of childhood sexual abuse, victims of workplace abuse, victims of emotional abuse, victims of sexual assault, etc. The abusers think that they are above reproach, and try to convince their victims that no one will take them at their word.
Edward, you do realise this was a libel case against a tabloid and Johnny depp has not been found guilty in a court of law of any domestic abuse don't you? Your comment is ridiculous

What are you talking about? It’s just be proven in court that Johnny Depp (the abuser) beat Amber Heard (the victim). The victim has been heard and the abuser clearly isn’t beyond reproach. Great comment though. 👍
You're ignoring the fact that a man is always presumed guilty until he's able to prove his innocence when it comes to domestic violence. Even when there's more than enough evidence that Heard started the conflicts, Depp is still the "wifebeater" but no one has called Heard a "manbeater". The simple fact that domestic violence against men is discussed as "contradicting the widespread impression" proves how biased people are about domestic violence.
I didn't ignore it. Children of both sexes are victims of horrible abuse and told "No one will believe you!" Spouses are victims (even in same-sex relationships, yes)! are told that. Old, young, middle-aged, it's always the same theme. Control, pain, repeat. That's why I said ALL victims. ALL NO EXCEPTIONS.
Who is ignoring that? Leo said all victims of abuse of any gender, and I didn't use any gendered terms.
Leo and Tabitha: in case people haven’t been paying attention. These users ( L & T) champion equality of many kinds and feminist ideals. Despite the inconveniences one may experience, feminism and racial equality are just some of the ways forward to a progressive society. Notice how they didn’t use gender pronouns. They have been denouncing awful behavior. Abusers come in many shapes and forms, so are their victims/ subjects of their terror.
Some people bring out the worse in others or a select few. I think they’re very volatile around each other. We may never really know their dynamic, but it seems like both of them contributed to an unsafe and toxic relationship. If Amber was like everything these posts suggest AND “playing the victim...” I’m at a loss for words. It really makes it harder for true victims to get justice. We can’t be telling men/males that their experiences with abuse don’t matter. That’s hurting everyone. The fact that they’ve been documenting these incidents should have been a red flag to both of them to get out and seek help.
I grew up watching all his movies. I heard about the court case. I read about the court case. From what i've heard both were at fault, and the marriage was screwed as heck. And you know what- if a *judge* and *jury* say something happened, it bloody well happened. Theres even been stuff said that a lot of assultors say. Also the fact that people who don't even know them are stciking up for them is not exactly right, and just because he was our favourite childhood actor doesnt instantly make him the right one. And i'm sure rhis comment will get downvoted to floor. But i dont care. Too many women are victims and not belived by people.
@ Lyra. No argument here. Whatever the truth, nobody wins, and sometimes personalities feed each other's "issues". I stand up for victims of abuse, all victims, the end, b/c nobody stood up for *me*.
Too many men are victims and not believed by people, just because they're men.
I think that's probably the fairest assessment. https://www.legalcheek.com/lc-journal-posts/a-critical-analysis-of-the-johnny-depp-libel-trial/
Like when my stepmother told me not to tell my stepsister that her first husband molested me at age 12. "It would just break her heart," she said. What about my heart? I'll say this. When I found out he had a massive coronary and died, I celebrated. Yeah, that was fair.

Leo, thank you. As you might gather, my stepsister and I have never been close.
@Snowy Tundra, oh, if I had never heard that story before... But I hear it so often. "It'll break so-and-so's heart." Yeah. And it's done the victim's well-being *so* much good?... *sigh*
Amber Heard was arrested in 2009 when she was beating up her former partner. Why is she allowed to continue making movies and Johnny is kicked off on unproven charges of her - a proved abuser and beater?
It has also been proven that Judge Nichol's son works for the defendant & with the author of the story calling JD a wife beater at Talk Radio which is owned by Ruppard Murdoch who owns The Sun and Judge Nichol's wife's best friend is best friends with Amber Heard's main attorney. They even invited AH to a dinner party during the trial & Judge Nichol's also previously worked for the defendant when he was a barrister. With those, plus a couple more connections, he should of recused himself from the case just for his son currently working for the defendant alone and if you read the court documents, he told JD he believed him but believed her more; by 1% more as the outcome was 51% in favor of her.

I didn't know about any of that. I wanted to reply below to Edward and Olive-I hate that BP won't let us. Edward, it wasn't "proven" that he beat her. How did they prove that? If you hear all of those audio tapes that she made, you see that he has a very calm nature even when drinking.

Expect, in this libel case the court examined evidence and ruled that the sun paper’s claims were true and Johnny Depp beat Amber Heard - meaning that it has been proven. It’s not difficult
You know it would be confirmed... were it not for the ACTUAL PHYSICAL EVIDENCE AGAINST HEARD!
The problem is that the judge who called Depp a wifebeater ignored the fact that Depp never was trailed or even convicted of domestic violence or assaulting Amber Heard. Instead he based his verdict on allegations that weren't proven at all. On the other hand there's more than enough evidence that Amber heard was the offensive and abusive party in the relationship. She even told Johnny Depp that she could do what she wanted because no one would believe Depp. "Go and tell the world that I, Johnny Depp, am a victim of domestic violence and see how many people believe you.". https://www.screengeek.net/2020/02/07/amber-heard-johnny-depp-full-leaked-audio-recording/

It doesn't matter if she was bashing him over the head with a cement block,A MAN DOESN'T HIT A FEMALE IN ANGER.HE'S A PIECE OF GARBAGE!!!!
are you okay? Do you are have brain damage? "A MAN DOESNT HIT A FEMALE IN ANGER" says no one with common sense ever. Abuse is abuse. No f*****g in-betweens. Men today, in the worst year of f*****g modern history are being bullied and harassed. "oH iTs cAuSe mEn cAn dO s**T bY tHeMsElVeS" so just cause theyre a man they can do it by themselves? So much for "equality"
Zally no
I do not know the truth and therefore I do not allow myself to judge. But some MEMES are pejorative. Now, downvote me!
I agree. Amber heard sucks if she beat Depp, and Depp sucks if he beat Heard. but we don’t entirely know so I’m keeping my mouth pretty shut.
The thing that made me make up my mind is when she admitted she manipulated the situation on tape, she straight up said that she was the abuser and no one would side with him. She was mocking him and he taped it. I wasn't willing to make any judgements until then but the tape was really damning.

This is a good policy. I'm not sure why you are being downvoted.
If only there was some fair and transparent way of deciding the truth.
update @ivana, I didn’t know about the existence of a tape. That basically incriminates her. :/
The audio of her admitting to being the abuser: https://www.screengeek.net/2020/02/07/amber-heard-johnny-depp-full-leaked-audio-recording/ Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j7GpnniRg_E
Apparently there’s evidence proving she was the abuser not him.
This is the audio of her admitting to it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j7GpnniRg_E There's plenty more on youtube too. :(
There is audio (and I believe video but i'm not too sure) evidence of heard beating depp
Did you not read? There are recordings of her mocking him and telling him no one will believe him.
Yeah girl same, but what I can say is., either way, he should not have been fired if there are allegations against the red-haired demon (I honestly don't like her much rn)

As if it wasn’t hard enough for women to come forward and accuse someone of sexual assault, people like Amber make it so much easier for sexists to dismiss us. And it is important to remember that men are abused too, but it happens so much less. I hope Johnny Depp is doing well and I hope Amber faces jail time.
And this is why men don't speak out about domestic violence. Amber Heard's actions almost mirror an ex-girlfriend of mine who used to physically attack me and then lie that the bruises she gave herself were down to me. My friends had seen her attack me and had had to physically remove/restrain her from me on occasion, but her friends and family all bought it. I left that relationship after my ribs were broken by her father (she'd previously broken my nose), no one believes that a 6'2" man can be beaten up by 5'6" woman but it happens, because men are taught not to hit women so all you can do is restrain them (which is generally how they get bruises to blame on you).
Im sorry, if that b... is far away, Im sure you have a better life now.
Can I just say, that it is important to know that anyone can be victims of abuse. No one really needs to be male or female to be abused, and it is a thing that can happen anywhere, anytime, to anyone. So ty for sharing this here
A friend of mine was literally beaten and abused so badly by his now ex-wife he can no longer work, because of both the physical and mental damage left behind by her actions. Yet he was forced to pay her alimony after losing his case against her in court for the abuse, because confronting her in that setting set off his PTSD so bad his testimony wasn't taken seriously. And she did a similar thing, using bruises and evidence of how he "harmed" her when he had just been trying to restrain and stop her.
That woman and her family are kind of entitled, but huge narcissists. I would check out r/entitledparents or r/raisedbynarcissists if you feel like it.
Also men don't have the help out there, there is almost nothing a man can do to get away from a violent spouse if they have children, no refuges, and since they're often the breadwinner, it means that leaving and taking the kids means leaving their job, destroying the kids future... Even with evidence there is little you can do...
Capn_Ahab -
The whole "don't hit a woman" thing is insane. So a 5'4" 120lb guy can walk up to a big biker dude and slap him and say "you're bigger and stronger so you can't hit me"?
Regardless of that total truth here, she should be fired too. The only reason she has kept her job is because she's a woman. As a woman who is hopefully not a total piece of s**t, that angers me.
I agree with you. I think that they were very toxic and ultimately no one really knows how their relationship played out. But what is good for the goose is good for the gander. If Johnny Depp is to be fired for abuse so should she. There is far evidence, from her own lips, of her abusing him then her video of him throwing things around. She kept her job by being poor innocent woman and I hate that.

I do see Saara’s point. I just don’t think it’s conclusive though. She’s a beautiful public figure who is seen by some as the face of a victim/survivor of abuse. For a long time, if a poc female/woman acted a certain way... it gets stereotyped to a lot more people. Just the slightest annoyance they show can get them labeled as angry, even with just cause. Angry white women is fairly recent. It sucks that we’re quick to judge because we’re wired that way and for the lack of time to inform our judgment. With respect to this outrage towards her, I don’t think it’s related to race but due to the involvement of a long term, beloved entertainer and the diminution of men speaking out about being victims of abuse.

White* woman. Black and Latino women are characterized as "angry," "loud," and "aggressive." No doubt if she wasn't white, she'd be ostracized and have to find a normal job.
Saara . good
They're both messed up people and I don't like how their toxic relationship is open for display to the public.
I don't think it was ever really their choice to have it on open display, they are celebrities so it was kind of beyond their control and it opens up some discussions around abuse. Having conversations about abuse in the open makes having those conversations a lot easier and helps people in abusive relationships to find help and support.
Yes that's very true. What I meant by my comment was that no one deserves having their personal problems discussed by millions of people around the world. People are going about making memes and sharing juicy gossip and dramatic findings.it's kind of disgusting. Also there are a bajillion ways to have a conservation about abuse that don't involve such mess.
Well, I mean, she made a choice to put it on display. All he's doing is saying 'yes and it was toxic from your side too,' when she accused him. It's still her fault that its been made public.

Oh come on this is rubbish and the thing is we will never know all the facts. Making your assumptions based on internet and tabloids is rubbish. Looking at them together was cringeworthy enough, both are toxic. Both have abused substances and most probably each other. That is disgusting and sad. I am afraid that I will be looking Depp’s movies differently which is also sad because it was a big part of growing up loving Edward Scissorhands etc. Both of them have a bad rep from now on, but we all know that will pass, especially in Depp’s case because apparently women supporting women is so last season. Jeez... Any kind of violence towards others made is wrong and there should be a price to pay. There are other forms of violence too, not just physical.
I guess people don't wanna admit their heroes have flaws and just wanna forgive and forget. But I agree with you, they had an awful toxic and abusive relationship. While she was definitely abusive and probably the instigator to their big rows, I question Johnny's mental health for both getting with someone like Amber Heard (and leaving his wife for her) and getting into this toxic dynamic. I too view him differently... their weird actions with the dog thing in Australia.... all the drama now.... they are both at fault, and both need to look at themselves.
Excellent comment
Anyone can be a victim of domestic violence. My uncle is proof of this. He has been stabbed twice by his crazy wife. She also set a house on fire while my uncle and aunt were in it. My cousin was also a victim of domestic violence. He was dragged by a car by his ex girlfriend. Johnny Depp is a good guy and I don't think that he would ever hurt a woman.
Thank you for this. Someone I love was hurt badly and while that period of his life is long over? Scars remain. Oh, adn then there's the u ncle who died... At the hands of a female sibling. So, yeah, we gotta open our minds to what awfulness *any* human can commit.
Deanna (and others offended by the likes of a certain type of ppl), I get why you replied. It sucks when people misinterpret your words, intentions, and heart. The people who take the time to read your words and think about them won’t be making uninformed comments that tear (people) down needlessly, the ones that do... well, it just reveals their awfulness/sadness/sickness. Continue showing who you are, just don’t let it bother you when you can’t be bothered. Edward doesn’t like when I correct him and lash out. It doesn’t quite tickle my fancy but would have to do. Also, your comments on such issues have been meaningful and informative. You speak out about these behaviors without regard to the person’s gender, race, or political party.
@Edward: I have a feeling that you might need the definition of anecdote. Anecdote: “a short amusing or interesting story about a real incident or person.”
