For me personally, school had educated me, but it still came as a shock when it happened, because in my mind I was supposed to have at least two more blood-free years before they came. But, well, they came early. It was very upsetting... though the blood wasn't really the issue, it was the pain I wasn't truly prepared for. "It's unpleasant" was the biggest lie of my life.

I was 9. I was not prepared. My mom thought she had a few years to warn me. I knew about periods, but not really.

I had an older sister. I was LONG prepared for menstruation via overly-graphic talks from my mother and from witnessing my sister's periods. One thing I feel deceived on though - I'm adopted and my mother told me that my bio parents were tall and thin, so I likely wouldn't start menstruating until maybe 14 or 15 years old, maybe even 16 years old. I started when I was 11 years old and I was PÍSSED at my mother for "deceiving" me XD But, to answer your question, I found out what menstruation was LONG before I started actually menstruating.

Having the knowledge and applying it to yourself can be disparate lol. You also hope that somehow you will be the exception

I (F57) had my first period around my 13th birthday. The last class of 7th grade was P.E. and I was taking a shower. Started bleeding and totally freaked out. To this day I do not know how I got home to my aunt and uncle's house. Had lived with them along with my brother and cousin for 4 years by this time. My Aunt taught High School P.E. and my uncle taught High School Biology. They never explained anything to me. Sex Ed classes were in 9th grade. My Aunt bought me menstrual pads and said follow the directions. I followed the directions and the directions said I could flush them . I flushed them. I always did what I was told!!! My Aunt had to dig up the front yard to find out why the plumbing stopped working. She was more careful after this about telling me what and how to do something.

Yes, they say it like that, and follow it up with "not everybody gets cramps, if you eat right and exercise you won't get cramps, they're not that bad, you can do normal physical activity, just take some ibuprofen." So then when you feel like you got hit by a truck on your periods and realize it's going to be like that every month, you realize this thing that's going to keep happening for 30 years has been absurdly understated.

I think it depends on where they're from and how open the communication is with the parents. My kids know about periods, pregnancy, correct anatomical body parts, etc because whenever they have a question, I just answer in an age appropriate manner. I was raised this way as well, but I know some people were very sheltered and didn't know some things (for example, pee doesn't come out of the vagina) that everyone should know

I didn't learn anything until after it started. Not all girls have that experience but I feel like many do. I think it's because the conversations are too uncomfortable talking about for some parents even though they really need to have them.

I mean, I knew about hemerrhoids for years beforehand, but I still flipped out when I stood up and saw bright red all up in the toilet.

Many families, especially religious ones, won't talk about sex ed. It needs to be taught. I was fortunate, my late mother prepared me early.

What surprises me us that this post says "14 year old daughter". Is that age normal? I had mine at 12, and my mother had me fully informed about not only what was to come but also why it would come. I still blanked out when I saw blood in the toilet though. No amount of preparation can be like the real thing, I wasn't scared but nervous. Kind of like how you prepare for an exam but still feel nervous on exam day.

My friend stayed at 9. That year they took all the 4th graders (the bulk of the 9yr olds) and taught us about puberty. The girls and boys were separated (I think the boys could have been informed on some things three girls go through and how to not be an a*****e about it, but this was public school in 1997). Also the girls sessions were longer than the boys, I guess because there's a bit more involved about female anatomy and puberty than with males.... lucky bastards..
