I saw a video about this organisation. They stay with abused children through court proceedings, at school, etc. if the abuser isn't remanded to custody. Really Solid work.

Two summers ago there were some nasty incidents in my city involving pride events. BACA showed up to the pride family picnic (and other events) to make sure no one could start trouble there, when they weren't keeping a look out at entrances they coloured with kids, got their faces painted, played hopscotch, blew bubbles and had a blast with everyone!

Its was pouring down rain. A person in a wheelchair was getting soaked waiting for the bus. People moved out of the wheelchair area to let them on board. Even the drunk annoying guy. All except one a hole. The poor disabled person had to wait for the next bus. We thought the driver should have kicked him off the bus.

We don't know the full story though. Was there enough room for the man in the wheelchair in the first place? If not then it would be kind of unfair. As well some people might have not been paying attention to the situation and it would be unfair to kick those people out. Yet if there was room with a doubt they should have made room.

Here’s the thing about knowledge—if our metaphorical cup is full, if we always want to prove others wrong, and if we get overly defensive whenever a factoid threatens our worldview, then we’ll only ever live in our own private echo chamber.

Sure, it’s comfy and cozy in this homogenous bubble of views, but it doesn’t help us grow and evolve as human beings much. We have to be willing to question everything. And even if we turn out to be right about something… well, there’s a lot to be said for being graceful and diplomatic with our words if we want to teach others, not just create an argument out of thin air.

He's my hero. And despite snobby elitist literary critics looking down on him for being a writer of 'popular fiction', he is genuinely hugely talented. He created Bachman to test the theory that his books were merely so successful due to having been written by THE Stephen King. And while Thinner sold 28000 copies as Bachman compared to 231000 as King, 28000 is not to be sniffed at for a fairly new and obscure author and Bachman was only growing in popularity when his cover was blown. The man is an amazing talent, by any name 🧡

Lenore Skenazy, the president of Let Grow and the founder of the Free-Range Kids movement told me during an earlier interview that we should try and learn something from authority figures who are clearly wrong about something, instead of being overly combative.

“The key is to discover things together. If something sounds strange or unlikely, respond with curiosity—ask the person to tell you more, and how they found this information out, and where you should go if you want to delve into it further,” the expert said.

I imagine that it has to do with representation, to see people (or figures) that you can relate to more. I learn more and more about people of colour because I want to be able to see things from their perspective and respect them. I think it's great that there's more representation now, but I as a white person will never truly know what it feels like to be of colour and face society's injustice like they do. I can only slightly relate to discrimination because of not being straight, but I've had it relatively easy because I'm white and live in Sweden. I think it's easy for us white people who are not racist to wonder who gives a f, but actually it matters for lots of people 🙂

The only reporter... where? Because in Italy studying Latin is quite common in schools (although it's becoming a less and less deep study). Also, I agree that knowing Latin should be required to the journalist who cover the Vatican, as Latin is the official language there.

Not only in Italy. By the way, I guess any journalist from a romance language, and more if he/her cover the vatican (so listens to Latin often) can understand the message. Maybe not word by word but at least the main meaning.

This seems very unlikely. Everyone with an understanding of Italian or perhaps Spanish - I assume there are enough Italian journalists covering the Vatican - should at least understand the general context. Church Latin is not that hard to understand in a general context. It is hard in literature for sure.

When my grandfather passed away (20 years ago), my mom and I went to speak with his (Roman Catholic) priest about the funeral service. The priest was pushing 50yo at the time. I wanted a full High Mass in Latin, because my grandfather would have loved it. The priest said he couldn't do it, because seminaries no longer taught Latin. My jaw dropped.

    Diane Aguilar

4 years ago Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

If you knew about the recent history of the Roman Catholic church you would have understood that there was a very important council, the Second Vatican Council, that convened in the early 1960s and implemented sweeping changes to the Church, including having all Masses presided in the vernacular. By the end of the 1960s there were no mainline Roman Catholic churches holding Mass in Latin, only some churches that parted with the official Church. If that priest was fifty back in 2001, he would've entered the priesthood sometime in the early 1970s, years after Vatican II and at the point when priests didn't have to learn Latin. So you weren't looking for an actual Roman Catholic service for your late grandfather, just something your poorly educated mind thought was "Roman Catholic".

Is it really dead, though? I'm not here to attack you, I just think you started an interesting topic. I think Latin lives in all the contemporary Romance languages. That makes it as dead as the Neanderthal human species, who eventually didn't all die to extinction, but part of them fused with the homo sapiens. Latin is both dead and alive as a language simultaneously.

The Quran also acknowledges Jesus (ʿĪsā) as one of the most important prophets, and a messiah sent by God. But it denies any belief linked to the Crucifixion. Islam, Christianism and Judaism are based on the same book and are way, way closer to each other than most people usually think.

He had to pay it because the University wanted the tuition fees he would have had to pay if he had done it in the normal time. The court decided this way because the UNI fulfilled their side of the contract between them by providing him with a degree (2 degrees to be precise). It was a private Uni. That's why the fees are so high, in case anyone wondered.

I went to german school (deutsche schule) until 7th grade (when they finally kicked me out) and I constantly got in trouble for finishing stuff faster than the rest, or doing work in advance. they wanted us to follow orders and be like everybody else, and I hated that.

That's not a German thing, just a school thing. They don't want one student ahead of the curve because a class is easier to teach when everyone is on the same page. If I had been your teacher I would have fantasized about murdering you since you constantly being ahead would make it much more difficult to do my job efficiently.

Instead of being confrontational when we learn that an authority figure in our lives has been wrong about something, we should look at the situation as a great learning opportunity.

“If it turns out that you do find some information that contradicts what the other person—your teacher or boss or anyone—has stated as true, again, the best approach is not confrontation. It's assuming that the other person didn't mean to steer you wrong,” Lenore said.

I had the immense privilege and honour of seeing Ornette Coleman live in London, a couple of years before he died. His son was always his touring drummer and is an incredible musician. He helped Ornette walk (well, shuffle really) on stage and helped him sit down on a stool in front of a microphone, he was so frail. Then he whips out his saxophone, blasts the most ridiculous lick I've ever heard and whispers into the microphone "Well thassalright!" It was the most incredible show and I was devastated when he died.

The problem is not that the vets are to "blame" for the deaths of the pets BUT THE OWNERS. Because the owners do NOT take care of their pets. You would not believe some of the horror stories that the techs at my vet's have told me. Frankly, I am surprised that the vet doesn't have an animal abuse officer in the waiting room to arrest all the monsters. LIke the time they came to work, it was winter and the temp was in the 20's and they found a pregnant dog tied to one of the pillars at the front door. She couldn't even lay down. One puppy was hanging from her uterus and one puppy was frozen to the ground. I finally decided it was a good thing that I didn't work at the vet's because screaming at clients who are stupid is not a good thing.,

As a Veterinary professional, I can confirm that our working conditions are highly challenging. Euthanasia and loss of patients is hard, but dealing with rude, ungrateful and downright abusive clients is what makes this job really difficult. We can't work for free. We have bills to pay and families to feed. In saying that, we do not get paid well. Our overheads are huge. Please be kind to your local Veterinary staff - we are loosing skilled staff at alarming rates and before you know it, there will be less and less clinics available to help you and your pets.

But the line seed oil is not responsible for the color. The people used the oil to create a variety of wooden paints, and the reason THIS color paint became popular was that the pigment was cheap and abundant in some areas. And keep in mind that the world was not always as industrialized as it is today. Today, line is somewhat "niche" and "organic", but really it's a hardy plant that can't just be used for food and the production of oil, but also for the production of textile fibers. It was likely more commonly cultivated back then.

The disease attacks the brain, leaving some victims in a statue-like condition, speechless and motionless. Between 1915 and 1926, 500,000 dead or incapacitated from it. It disappeared as mysteriously as it came in to the world.

Actually occurred parallel with the "Spanish Flu" and some researchers think that both might have been caused by the same flu variant. The Spanish Flu killed over 50,000,000 people. Whole villages in remote areas were wiped out.

I read it was called the Spanish Flu because because despite being enormously widespread, Spain was the only country to acknowledge it's existence due to war propaganda and no country wanting to admit how much it was effecting their troops.

The Robin Williams/Robert De Niro film “Awakenings” is based on a true story about a doctor who found a temporary cure for Encephalitis lethargica (which translates essentially to “brain disease that makes one sleepy”). It’s an amazing film that everyone should put on their list of movies to see.

Unfortunately I learned this after a weird and horrifying allergic reaction. I felt like I was on fire. So much so that, despite being an extremely self conscious person, I stripped naked in front of everyone in my desperation to cool down. It didn't make any sense so I wondered if, like you feel cold with a fever, you could feel hot with low body temperature. Got a thermometer and indeed my temp had plummeted. I learned later that what I did was paradoxical undressing, and that the burning feeling has something to do with the surface blood vessels trying to conserve heat.

Leopold actively deceived his people and the international press about what was happening in the Congo. He set up a fake charity to mask his exploitation and ran smear campaigns against the journalists who tried to report the truth. Some equally awful people collaborated with him, but the general populace of Belgium should not be held accountable.

The investigation at the start was appalling. Thankfully now that forensics has advanced and the evidence was re-examined to clear Lindy Chamberlain of any wrong doing. One thing that started the rumour of her being guilty was folded clothing, when in fact a tourist found the clothing, informed a detective. The detective picked up the clothing, without gloves, without taking photos. Then folded the clothes himself THEN took a photo. It was one huge bungle. Thankfully the truth is out now, but there are still a lot of people out there that believe Lindy is guilty so the damage is already done.

I'm glad this site doesn't allow gifs. Because every time someone mentions Azaria Chamberlain's death by dingo, some dingbat posts the gif from Seinfeld of Elaine saying, "Maybe the dingo ate your baby." And then they accuse me of not having a sense of humour when I object. THAT'S BECAUSE IT'S NOT FUNNY. A child is dead. Her mother was accused of killing her, and her father accused of being an accessory. She had to give birth to her fourth child while incarcerated. Other children have also been attacked by dingoes. It isn't the least bit funny. And no, I'm not Australian.

I have a friend this happened to when he and his wife were vacationing with another couple. The 2 husbands were left out at sea. They swam to a close-ish island to await rescue. Thankfully, the wives were waiting back on land for them, so it was noticed quickly that they were missing. The freakiest part for me about the story is when they came to pick up the guys on the island, one of the instructors mentioned that it was a good thing they didn’t walk around the island since it was an island of cannibals 😬

To this end they called their church “Paradise”, practiced nudism, rejected marriage and claimed they could do whatever they wanted because they had no knowledge of good/evil.

Actually, in the original myth, Persephone was a curious teenager and wandered into the Underworld herself. She was the one who wanted to stay with Hades, even though her mother was against it. That lead to the arrangement that they had for when Persephone stayed in the underworld. (Might have gotten a few things wrong, been a bit since I've dived deep back into the myths.)

My all-time favourite part about this god: His dog's name was Cerberus, presumably derived from the indo-european word "k̑érberos", meaning "spotted". Which means the Greek god of death literally named his three-headed hellhound Spot.

Thanks to my livestock diseases class in college I knew this. It can also survive for long periods in the soil, which is why it often reoccurs, especially when new animals are introduced to the area and become infected. It also never fully leaves the body and periods of high stress or other impacts to the immune system can cause it to reappear. It is most contagious when it is red and flaky. In humans you most often see the red ring, hence "ringworm". In many animal species it is characterized by hair loss and irregular scaly gray patches with flaking skin.

Well if it is believed that Eve's sin is why women suffer during childbirth (The Curse of Eve), doesn't it stand to reason that she was ABLE to sin because God caused her temptation by placing the tree of Forbidden Fruit there in the first place? ( I'm not arguing, genuinely curious)

    Seonie
    Community Member
4 years ago (edited) Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

I think it's because God gave humankind freewill. If humans were forced to obey/follow/love their maker, it wouldn't be genuine. Give people free will and let them do their thing, even if it means failure. If they do come to follow/love God, then it is because they want to, and it was not enforced. You cannot force or scare anyone into loving - it wouldn't be real. (Hope this helps, or answers your question!) (Edited to continue) So, directly or indirectly, did God cause the temptation? I would speculate only in the sense of giving her (and Adam) the free will to make any and all of their own decisions (and Adam could have refused, but nope - he was the first human to ever give into peer pressure :P )

I'm 58 and have had chronic insomnia since I was 13. Last week 4 nights in a row I only got 3 hours of sleep. It's extremely debilitating and makes depression so much worse. I keep building up tolerances to sleep medications and doctors don't want to prescribe many of the old ones that are actually useful anymore. My son introduced me to THC and that helps a lot. I can understand MJ's desperation to try propofol but my understanding is while it knocks you out it doesn't mimic sleep at all and his doc should have explained that to him, it didn't help at all, other than psychologically, he thought he was getting sleep.

How do you get into a routine of this kind and think it is going to end well. When you have to be anesthetised to get any sleep, it is time to reach out for help from someone who does not think this is appropriate... not someone willing to do that and line their pockets with your agony...

Having had general anaesthesia multiple times, I can imagine that this was not even remotely helpful. The point of it is that from the second you close your eyes and go under, to the second you are brought round again, whether it's 1 minute, 1 hour, 10 hours, your brain cannot physically process it. So however long you're out, your body maybe resting but your mind isn't. It tricks your brain. So from your perspective, you literally close your eyes, and then one second later open them again. So your perception is that you've had zero rest. You can't dream, your mind cannot rest. So to him.... he would still have felt like he wasn't sleeping. I cannot imagine how much that would mess you up physically and mentally for that amount of time. It's torture.

My doctor suspects that my body doesn't make any melatonin naturally. It takes a lot of (closely regulated) sleep medication for me to sleep. Even with those meds, once every couple of weeks, I just don't sleep. Thankfully, I don't have Jackson's doctor seeing to my care.

Apparently, propofol puts you to sleep but you don't get any REM sleep, so you don't really rest. To quote Robin Williams, "Using propofol for insomnia is like doing chemotherapy because you're tired of shaving your head."

I've heard that if the drunk bees make it back to the hive, the sentries won't let them in because they will ruin the entire hive's supply of honey.

I am not good at numbers, or at least not any better or worse than others, but I am very creative. I wonder if that's in part because of autism or not. I know creativity itself doesn't stem from there, but maybe in some cases it helps?... That may be a nuture case instead of a nature case, as living as an outcast often produces creative people, and may be purely coincidental. If autism does happen to affect the way or level at which we are creative, that is interesting. I often hear more cases about those with autism being good at numbers, vs. being creative, or witty. (Perhaps people just don't think that's as impressive.)

Julius Caesar supposedly "communed" with Alexander by attending his sarcophagus. Thus, many historians think that Octavian took it back to Rome with him once he defeated both Anthony and Cleopatra at Actinium. There is no proof of that, but the idea was that Alexander should not be buried with "losers." The fact is no one has a clue.

Last night I was watching a raccoon on my back porch and noticed how he seemed to sort the nuts and seeds he was eating. He was staring straight ahead (as if he were blind) while he ran his paws over the food. When he found something he liked, he'd eat it. Not once did he look down at what he was doing. It was amazing to see.

That was a huge story. It was the start of all over the counter aspirin/pain relievers having a security cap. There was a time when most people didn't think Tylenol would survive. But, they made it through. This was around the same time people were finding razor blades in Reese's Peanut Butter Cups and apples while trick-or-treating. Local elementary schools started having Halloween parties so kids didn't have to go door to door to get candy from strangers.

Not really - piracy is an act of taking control of a vessel without authorization from either the owner or operator of said vessel while it is underway, akin to hijacking. Preparing to resist piracy is not piracy itself, anymore than a flight attendant tackling a hijacker is committing a hijacking, but does violate several guidelines and norms.

It's a very sad story. During WW2, soldiers would land on isolated islands. They brought planes, supplies, everything an island isolated from the world wouldn't have. These soldiers were like gods to the tribespeople. But when the war was over, the soldiers went home, leaving these people in a whirling state of confusion. They built 'radio towers' because they thought they could bring the soldiers back. They made headphones, airstrips, satellite dishes and even planes out of wood. They even mimicked the marching and drills of the soldiers, hoping becoming like them would summon them. They never came back. It's just so heartbreaking

The "cargo cults" are religions created by modern people (usually white people from WW2) showing up at a small island in the pacific and giving them food and technology. They usually end up worshipping western culture and their "savior".

Actually, the existence of cargo cults predates WW2 by at least a good century, if not more. They exist primarily on islands in the south Pacific/SE Asian region. And they began when merchant cargo trading ships from Europe would stop off to resupply. The ships sought fresh water and food, and they offered fabulous (to the islanders) items in exchange. The white men in charge of the ships also had magical powers over life and death with their mysterious guns, medicines, alcohols, etc. Things like iron axes, fabric were wonderful treasures to the islanders of the early 1800s. So they began to see these ship captains as divine gods gifting them with fantastic objects. And when the ships left, the mythology was often created about a white skinned god who would one day return bringing more fabulous gifts, etc. So, when the conflict in the Pacific occurred, there was already a precedent, a cultural expectation if you will, among many of the societies through out the Pacific rim region.
