Sweden is the largest and most populous of the Nordic countries and has a roughly 1,000-year-long continuous history as a sovereign state.

It rose from backwardness and poverty into a highly developed post-industrial society, with a standard of living and life expectancy that rank among the highest in the world.

So let's take a closer look at how this constitutional monarchy looks today.

We at Bored Panda put together a list of photos that paint a pretty accurate picture of Sweden's land, people, and culture, so continue scrolling to check out just how unique it is. Just beware, you can also end up opening a new browser tab and buying some plane tickets...

Roughly the same size as California, Sweden is usually divided into three regions: to the north is Norrland, the vast mountain and forest region; in central Sweden is Svealand, an expanse of lowland in the east and highland in the west; and in the south is Götaland, which includes the Småland highlands and, at the southern extremity, the small but rich plains of Skåne.

The Swedish coastline is mostly rocky, with hundreds of small, sometimes wooded islands. Ground by glacial ice in the same direction, they share a common rounded shape. This type of coast, known as skärgård, is found in both the east and the west, especially around Stockholm and Gothenburg.

3 years ago (edited) Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

The top two are different stations, Solna and Rådhuset, it's not so visible in this picture but Solna has a painted red sky with a green forest, while Rådhuset has a almost martian looking iron brown. They are all different stations in this pic. And all of the 100 stations have their own art installations. Besides the permanent ones, some of then have secondary installations that change every now and then, with Odenplan's platform art changing most frequently. It's the blue line that has these large painted caves like in the picture since that line was blown out of the bedrock to create these fantastical caves. But all 100 of them have their own unique style and decorations 👩‍🎨

About 15 percent of the country lies within the Arctic Circle, so from about late May until mid-July, sunlight lasts around the clock north of the Arctic Circle, but, even as far south as Stockholm, the nights during this period have only a few hours of semidarkness.

In mid-December, on the other hand, Stockholm experiences only about 5.5 hours of daylight, and areas in the far north remain in nearly 20 hours of total darkness, relieved by a mere 4 hours of twilight.

This sign (is a few minutes from my house and) was actually taken down for violating traffic code. But as the sign indicates, the added print came back within a couple of days. Fun fact! Fart means speed in Swedish, but also has come to mean something you travel through. Infart - Entrance (for cars), Utfart - Exit (for cars), Genomfart - passage or thoroughfare.

The north-to-south extension of the country and the higher elevation of the northern part creates regional differences in winter climate.

The northern interior receives heavy snowfall for up to eight months of the year and has severe temperatures that drop as low as −22 to −40 °F (−30 to −40 °C).

The average January temperature in Haparanda, for example, at the head of the Gulf of Bothnia is 10 °F (−12 °C). Sea ice covers the Gulf of Bothnia from November to May. But in southern Sweden, snowfall is irregular and the average January temperatures range between 23 and 32 °F (−5 and 0 °C). Coastal waters seldom freeze.

Summer temperatures in the country vary far less, although summer is much shorter in the north.

IKEA is the opitome of a a specialist architectural design style that perfectly depicts, yet also induces both anxiety, and panic attacks. The only shortcut to be found is usually a fire escape door, that comes with a handy alarm to let everyone know that the architect has succeeded with their vision.

We have them in some places in Copenhagen, Denmark, too (only horisontally elongated, so you don't have to be as precise). The first time I saw one, I thought it was a fun idea, but I soon realised that I see no point in having them.

Although different groups of immigrants have influenced Swedish culture through the centuries, the population has been quite homogeneous, both ethnically and religiously.

It's only since World War II that notable change has occurred. From 1970 to the early 1990s, net immigration accounted for about three-fourths of the country's population growth, and by far, most of the outsiders came from the neighboring Nordic countries, with which Sweden shares a common labor market.

In the 1980s, Sweden began to receive an increasing number of asylum seekers from Asia and Africa, including countries such as Iran, Iraq, Lebanon, Turkey, Eritrea, and Somalia, as well as from Latin America that were suffering under repressive governments.

Then, from 2010 to 2014, the number of people seeking asylum in Sweden expanded dramatically, reaching more than 80,000 in 2014, and that number doubled to more than 160,000 in 2015. Thus, by 2016, one in six Swedish residents had been born outside the country, and Sweden, experiencing the mass influx of migrants, enacted new and more stringent immigration restrictions.

There's one of these in the US too. It's called the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel and it connects the eastern shore of Virginia to the mainland. Two tunnels and one high bridge, plus an island in the middle. If I remember correctly, it's 24 miles in total. My mom lives on the shore side, so I take the bridge when I visit.

An engineer relative of mine helped design this (I'm Danish), and my dad could see it from his balcony where he used to live. I like almost nothing that looks modern, but there's something about this bridge. Elegance, maybe? By the way, the building project brought some spiders that can harm people (which is a foreign phenomenon to us Danes) to the area, and I came across one of them in my dad's house. I think they came from South America. I usually don't kill ANY living thing, not even mosquitoes, but my heart hardened for a moment there, so I didn't stop my dad from swatting the spider. I don't know what happened to those spiders, but I'm pretty sure they're gone. *phew*

Whether we're talking about IKEA or even H&M, Swedish design is one of the country's main exports and has permeated the world consciousness in the last century.

It is known for its emphasis on sustainability and functionality; Swedes like things to look good, but they also like to keep it simple.

But if you're visiting Sweden and want to bring back a little local design with you, look out for more unique finds from local artists, interior designers, and smaller fashion labels. In Stockholm, you can visit the Design District located in the trendy Södermalm neighborhood.

Yeah but it works. Scandinavian countries have lowest recidivism rate in Europe (if not in the World). Yet we still believe that prison life should be as gard and traumatising as possible, while it is proven that once you go to prison you can never get your life fully on track.

Wait, you mean locking someone in an isolated cage for years with no one to socialize with but other criminals, no corrective action and no opportunity upon release doesn't work? Well, according to Republicans we just need to lock them up longer and for dumber stuff.

Sweden has one of the lowest numbers of inmates per population in the Western world. Having a less punitive system reduces crime rates but countries with tough sentencing laws have high levels of inmates per population (looking at you 'Murica), why is this so hard to grasp?

That's because they have amongst lowest inequality. Crime is caused by inequality and psychological issues. Saudi also has a low crime rate but that is because their punishments are so brutal that no-one would dare.

not compared to 95% of the prisons in the rest of the world. Free education, medical, dental, mental health, trades training, freedom of religion, television, computer access, libraries, Honor dorms, visitation, free meals, commissaries, barber shops, social clubs, sports, laundry facilities.... need i go on? compare this to any third world prison, most other European prisons and prisons pretty much on any other continent, The worst thing about American prisons are the prisoners. In large part, They are what makes our prisons horrendous. What they do to one other.

Swedish-produced or Swedish-written songs (including top British and American hits) have been entering the charts across the world for years.

Ever since their win at the 1974 Eurovision Song Contest, ABBA has paved the way for more Swedish acts, including Roxette, Robyn, Lykke Li, Avicii, and more.

Gullholmen is so beautiful! Even in the fog! It smells of the sea, food is fresh, and the people kind! I spent 7 days there when I was 16, with my host family. The fathers' sister and her husband lived there. Elsa and Bertil. Bertil took me cod fishing in a row boat and it was fun! No bait, he just dropped a line with hooks up and down it, we waited and I practiced my Swedish and then 30 minutes later, he pulled the line up and there were plenty of cod on the line! Let me tell you, they are ugly fish! A monkfish is cute compared to a cod! I also met a nice young man and he made me an egg cream, a real one with brandy, and we talked mist of the evening. I loved it there! I also jumped the cliffs, small ones, near the water with my host sister Kristina Jakobson, who was a medical student at the time, and it was so much fun! Kristina's brother was in the USA as an exchange student there while I was with his family. If you cannot tell, i loved it there!

    The Guardians

At a campsite in Näsåker, Sweden, these figures can be seen sitting around a fire (at night a lamp with an orange glow can be seen in the campfire).
They are called "Väktarna" which means "The Guardians".

Isn't there a theory where there are different branches of existence based on a common origin where the only difference is the manifestation of what ifs, what could've, what could've not and many other variables happened to and gave birth to the branching of another plains of existences, much like a nexus of different Earths parallel to each other never touching only existing. Since hearing this way back I thought 'what if the know universe is like this and the reason why we can't reach them is because of not only the distance but a force capable of defying our known reality... Uh sorry I'm rambling here

Here in New Mexico it is no problem using the McD ride-thru with your horse. They usually even have apples! I am guilty! Lots of folks take photos. Here in my small town, our Walmart even has an area with water for your horse, and the Post Office has a nice hitching post! I know if you skied up to it in the winter, they'd love it too! I got a tiny pin with a supposed diamond and not even a cake. Back in the day, a guy who reached 25 years got a huge gift and a nice cake. They just threw the pin in my locker and no cake...Oh but THAT was because I was a female, and they used to think that any working woman was taking the job of a man. Seriously, my boss told me when I was promoted that I was taking a man's job...I said "There IS no such thing as just a man's job!" (computer IT position) This was in 1975. There is a whole long story about this, but I can just say THANK YOU SWEDEN, and all the other progressive countries who know that it is the individual who deserves excellence, not because you are not the right sex!

My experience has been that as a rule they’re thrown in the trash bins that’s pretty much everywhere, but there are always asshóles, naturally. And if there hadn’t been trash bins everywhere, it might have been different.

Same in Denmark - except they're often offered for free at cafés and the like. I've had many, and I've never paid for one. By the way, an extra cool feature is that you don't have to put out your cigarette first; you just put it in there and close the ashtray, which puts it out.

We have Bonfire Night/Guy Fawkes Night/Firework Night in the UK. Traditionally, you would build a "Guy" effigy and burn that at the bonfire... there has been some very ..choice.. "guys" over the years lmao, especially so at the Lewes bonfire night. (which I'd say is definitely worth travelling for because it's the best bonfire night I've ever experienced) 161105-don...265357.jpg 161105-donald-trump-effigy-mn-1800-62cddcb265357.jpg

The people of Lewes heartily discourage visitors for their bonfire night celebrations - so much so that public transport to Lewes is suspended or severely limited on the night - or at least it has been the past couple of years. They're very serious about their traditions and things do sound like they get quite scary in the town centre. I'm terrified of sudden loud noises and am wary of fire so I've never ventured out there despite living quite close by.

We do the same in Denmark, only on June 23rd to mark the longest day (in terms of daylight) of the year. We sing a pretty song reserved for that occasion, called "Midsommervisen" ("The Midsummer Ballad") and sometimes a few other traditional Danish songs. I love the atmosphere. Sometimes, though, a homemade mock witch is burned in the fire, and I don't like that, because it makes the scene too similar to a real "witch" burning as carried out in the past.

I get that. I’m very glad only one woman has ever been confirmed to be burned alive as a witch here in Sweden (a woman named Malin, Stockholm, 1676), that shìt was nasty. Don’t get me wrong, we executed almost 300 people for “witchcraft” through the centuries when hunts for “witches” were a thing, but at least we burnt them AFTER death, usually death by decapitation.

We do the same in Czechia and call it "witches burning" or just "witches" but the origin of the tradition and the name is actually that on St. Valpurga's night witches congregate and have more power so people used to light large bonfires and gather around them to be protected from the witches (the witches burning is in the name only). Today it's mostly about drinking of course.

We have the Up Helly Aa Fire Festival is Lerwick, Shetland to celebrate the end of Yule. Communities groups will put on short skits and then march through the streets of Lerwick with torches to the beach. The Guizer Jarl and the community squads are often dressed as Vikings or in traditional Nordic dress and are the ones to set a beautiful hand-made recreation of a small Viking longboat on fire. Sadly, it has been canceled several years in a row now due to Covid. I do hope they have it next year so I can see this gorgeous tradition that is part of my country.

What you see on the picture is not a common thing, never seen this kind of pram parking before, must belong to a special place that is crowded, maybe. And of course babies are not left unsupervised outside in the street. Parents are close. We’re talking about sleeping outside in your own garden, or maybe outside a cafe etc when weathers is fine, or in the kindergarten.

The Copenhagen metro sucks; it's all grey, minimalistic, angular and somehow oppressive - and all stations look the same, which is impractical as well as boring. So typical of unimaginative Denmark. (I'm Danish.) ... I love the Paris metro, which is pretty much the opposite of the one in Copenhagen, albeit somewhat claustrophobic.

The Gävle commune definitely does not want it to be burned down and the judiciary takes it really seriously, giving out proper arson sentences. People do it mostly for the meme I think, but it might also be to rebel against the state or even ones who feel it is a pagan ceremony to burn it down.

This is so wonderful, I have tears. I hate it when they go on the hunt for a huge tree for this or that city, or the White House tree, and they murder a being that is often hundreds of years old to haul out of the woods, driven to a big city or building, decorated for a few weeks and then taken down and mulched. Why can't they just plant a live tree like this and not destroying an old man of the forest.

I googled this as I was thinking 'why?' and the end of this article on it seems to sum it up nicely 😊 "For many Swedes, there is something comforting about knowing that every year there is one hour, on one day, when you sit down with everyone in your family and just be together. “People always want to change everything, and make everything new,” Feldreich, Sweden’s Jiminy Cricket, told the Swedish newspaper Länstidningen in 2008. “And then, like in a fairy tale from when we were kids, there’s something familiar.” Kalle Anka, he said, “offers security in a confusing world.”

In Denmark we watch it at 4pm every Christmas Eve. It's not with the same cartoons as in Sweden but the concept is the same. :) and in the end of this show every year we get these little "teasers" for new disney cartoons that will come in cinemas in the following year. :)

It started out long ago when cartoons were rare, but on Christmas they'd always show this one Disney Christmas special and obviously all kids wanted to watch. But the tradition stayed even when cartoons became more common, since parents want their kids to enjoy what they themselves enjoyed as children.

So sad that they feel they have to kill them...they really do not need to at all. A friend of mine from Maine raised one as a baby after the mother had been murdered. Cookie was the official greeter and had to stick her neck into every vehicle hoping there are some goodies there. She lived in their woods, and had a long and happy life.

Fat Tuesday In Sweden Today. Time To Overeat And Celebrate This Thing We Call "Semla"

Fat Tuesday In Sweden Today. Time To Overeat And Celebrate This Thing We Call "Semla"

Every year we celebrate this day we call "fettisdagen" or fat Tuesday. This holiday dates back to the year 1594 and occurs 47 days before easter every year. The name of the day comes from all the fat food you'll eat during this day before the fasting begins till the easter holiday starts. The American version of our fat Tuesday is Mardi Gras.

The tradition in Sweden is to eat this pastry during this day. It's called Semla and as the day suggests it's filled with calories. It's made by a simple bun either just white flour or with added cardamom (which is my favorite). Then you scoop out the bottom half and fill it with almond cream. Top it off with whipped cream and lid with added icing sugar. IT'S SO DELICIOUS! If you go to Sweden during this time you really have to try Semla! Everyone is crazy about it and the pastry shops with the best semla usually have queues going outside the shops.

We have Shrove Tuesday the Tuesday before Lent starts in Christianity. It is more commonly known as Pancake Day now- when you can eat pancakes and anything else you are supposed to give up for Lent. My old church would have a huge afternoon tea where there were sweet and savory pancakes with a range of toppings. Some of the savory toppings the Cook Islander church members would bring were particularly good!

The artist, Mikael Genberg, intended it to illustrate two important symbols for Sweden: the high-technology Globe building and the traditional, simple small countryside cottage in Falu red with house corners painted in white. The house was positioned some distance from the exact top position of the Globe. Genberg also hoped to eventually place a similar cottage on the Moon. The cottage remained on the Globe until October 2009."

Lol when I moved here I was offered surströmming and I said sure. There was also boiled potatoes and hard bread and some other stuff. I took some surströmming on a plate along potatoes and some other stuff and I ate it just as it was. Then I realised everyone was just looking at me. Apparently that wasn't the right way to eat it. It was fish and I always eat fish like that. I really enjoyed it as well.
