Instagram Page Shares 50 Interesting And Lesser-Known Pictures From Our History
Today, you have your seat ready on a train to the past, with some of the most touching, beautiful and intriguing moments of history. Call it modern-day time travel, since these days, most of us barely have time to sit back, relax and dwell on the wonders of human history.
But thanks to this Instagram account titled A Slice Of History, which is basically a visual collection of selected historical ‘slices’, we have a whole lot to uncover. Think of Michelle and Barack Obama giggling on their wedding day in 1992, or Freddie Mercury lovingly hugging Mary Austin, and a couple of male lovers captured on camera in a photobooth in 1953; there’s something eternally beautiful about these moments.

Three Jewish Men Who Arrived At Auschwitz On The Same Day, Reunite 73 Years Later
With tattoos 10 numbers apart, they survived and went on to build families, successful businesses and live prosperous lives // Photograph taken at the Late Eye Witness Project, 2019
Thank you to these 3 men for their strength, endurance and spirit - they survived to tell their story, and we must *never* let it be forgotten (there are too many Holocaust deniers out there even at government levels, e.g. Hungary).
Germany will always remember. It is nearly all they ever talk about in history class

Such a bitter sweet photo. It is nice to see them smile after everything they went through.
At least there is some smile despite the horror. And Europe's in war again.
Well this one is a proper gut punch. I'm so beyond happy they made it and then were able to make and have wonderful lives but they should never have had to endure what they did (goes without saying I hope that no one in those hell holes on earth did). And we seem never to learn and history repeats. Free Ukraine x
To find out more about A Slice Of History, we reached out to the creator behind it named Sarah, a 22-year-old from Sydney. “I absolutely adore film, fashion and culture,” Sarah said, adding that she works as a production coordinator making TVCs (television commercials) and advertisements “with an incredible production team.” On top of that, Sarah is a full-time university student studying a Bachelor of Media and Communications, and a Bachelor of Arts, so it seems like no day is dull for the creator of A Slice Of History.
A Victorian Couple Try Not To Laugh While Getting Their Portraits Done // 1890
This is will always be one of my favorite old photoes on the internet
I've never seen a period photograph that wasn't stiffly posed. This shows there was such joy in their life. Love this to bits.
Oh I LOVE this! Such a shame they weren't supposed to smile or laugh in their pictures back then. This is brilliant. Love the last one especially. Bless them.

Sarah started this Instagram page which today has 145k followers back in 2018, “while procrastinating during a uni lecture (not very studious of me, I know). I was scrolling aimlessly through the explore page and with nothing really engaging me in any way.” The creator said that she realized “how such a ‘stimulating’ app lacked real, diverse and educational content, and thus wanting to learn more myself and have the ability to share my knowledge with others, I started a A Slice Of History.”
“I’d Rather Eat Pasta And Drink Wine Than Be A Size 0.” Sophia Loren, 1965

Well, I hope you see how silly that is!! She, and YOU, look fantastic!

Load More Replies...I thought that whole size zero thing was invented in the 2000? I don't think there even was a size 0 in 1965 ...
Nope, size 0 is an invention for the 1960's model, Twiggy. It has been in use since, although Nichole Miller is the first to mass produce the size for retail. Interestingly...the American size 0 is equal to the British size 4. https://wikipedikia.org/when-did-size-0-start-2/
Load More Replies...I love her, and I adore this idea, but size 0 didn't exist in the fashion industry until 1966 when it was created specifically for Twiggy. It wasn't widely used in clothing for sale until some time after that. Unfortunately this quote didn't happen.
Now she would be considered fat. Our society is sick :( She was extremely atractive
Exactly the opposite, of course. Any suggestion that someone be that "thin" would bring shrill accusations of fat phobia. Also, her head looks shopped.

Good to know that some people spend a lifetime standing up for what they believe in.
I mourn the loss of what could have been had he won the presidency. Dedicated leader, great man.
Bernie deserved to have a chance to run for President. He's awesome.
His campaign was greatly under served by not plastering this photo everywhere. It would have really helped. I hate that some people voted for Biden simply because he was Obama's VP, a political choice. Bernie has been fighting the good fight since the beginning!!
A Punk And A Kid | Brussels, Belgium, 2009. Photo By M. Lambrechts
The encounter took place at a Pride event in Brussels, where a curious kid asked if he could touch the punk’s jacket to see if the spikes were as sharp as they looked. The punker knelt down, amused by the kid’s reaction, and they engaged in conversation before returning to the parade.
That is sweet and doesn't surprise me. Punk rockers were never these mindless troublemakers who want to fight every person they see. Their fight is with greedy corporations, corrupt governments, oppressions of society and elitism, and they express their discontent through music, fashion and other creative forms. Most of the time, the people who dress punk rock just like the style. They're just people like everyone else. I could dive deeper into it, but I'll leave it at this overly simplified explanation.
I had always been a "Punker" in my youth. I stand for Christianity and Conservatism. I try everyday to be a good person and love my fellow man.
Load More Replies...I thought the same thing. Punk is an inclusive thing.
Load More Replies...Lots of stereotypical 'hard' people are filled with kindness and humanity. We need more of these type of images to come to light so that people are no longer surprised when they see them.
Like I always remind myself “ Don’t judge that person first until you see their true character “
This is so sweet I dont know why so many people think punk rockers are so mean
i wish i had a jacket like that, but with rainbow spikes so i'd look like a gay triceratops
This sounds really good. You could use an anodized aluminum or neobium for the spikes or you could tempur steel to the right colors and then clear coat it. It would be a heck of a lot of work but it would come out PHENOMENAL.

When asked about the idea behind her Instagram page, Sarah said: “with our secular society so absorbed and engaged on social media, I thought this modern tool truly had the potential to share old stories, different cultures, spectacular fashion moments, the marvels of filmmaking, and, of course, history; the good and the bad, on a scale that I could never reach alone.”
But making your content stand out from others on social media is a challenge in itself. “It can definitely be challenging in the sense where in order to stand out, you need to think outside the box and really delve deep into research,” the Sydney-based creator said.
A Priest Holds A Dying Soldier Whilst Bullets Are Fired Around Them | Venezuela, 1962

DANG i thought AWWWWWW until i read below , so sad , we're awful to each other
America doesn't like to talk about their short comings. George Takei did a one person play about his experience in the internment camps.
I hope they found each other, and were able to resume their friendship after that internment b******t was over (never should’ve happened in the first damn place, but we can’t—-and shouldn’t—-rewrite history, even if we finally have working time machines, because then we won’t learn from our mistakes). I love reunion stories of parted friends, relatives, and loves. They were ahead of their time in their friendship, I just hope it (and they) survived.
One of America's shame, that and putting toddlers in a cage after being taken from their parents.
And now idiots are targeting Russian immigrants, vandalizing Russian restaurants, cars that spot Russian flags stickers on their plates, symphonies are banning Russian composers, Russian artists are canceled, because, apparently, just by being Russian=agreeing with Putin! There are 2 million Russians trying to escape Russia because they don't support what's happening, yet out here, people still cannot make the difference between background and political affiliation.
"However, what I’ve found is that social media can be quite segregated, only showing content from certain countries and cultures. Whereas with A Slice Of History I try to incorporate an amalgamation of posts from across the world, getting insight from individuals to research and discuss, with different perspectives and opinions driving it,” Sarah explained.

This is how my friend, an ex-utility worker gave himself a brutal case of narcolepsy…he accidentally zapped himself. I would love to see him get a trained alert dog so my friend doesn’t do more damage to his body during a narcolepsy attack, but they cost thousands

Concentration Camps Liberated By Allied Forces
I could be wrong but the military weren't allowed to give all their food to the prisoners, even though they were starving. If they ate too much too fast and richer and heartier food, they'd get severely sick, losing a portion of the fluid in their bodies to the point of death. I may be wrong about it, I saw it on an episode of band of brothers

I love so much that this just labels it as a couple. It should not matter the gender.
I honestly hate how in the past so many people weren't accepted for who they are, some people still don't accept other people to this day, but to me I don't understand it, as long as they're happy and aren't bothering you being all up in your face, then what's the problem.

A Couple 48 Hours After They Met At Woodstock, And 50 Years, Two Sons And Five Grandchildren Later
Judy had met Jerry on Aug. 15, 1969 which was day one of the iconic Woodstock music festival, when her car broke down on New York’s Tappan Zee Bridge, roughly 90 miles from the concert grounds, and she and the two acquaintances she was traveling with decided to hitchhike.
She revealed in an interview with PEOPLE, “I was just thinking, ‘Damn, now we can’t go,’ and we were dying to,” recalls Judy, 71. “Then Jerry and his friends pulled up. I stuck my head in and I saw that there was a woman in the car. I’d never hitchhiked before, but I figured, ‘Well, since there was a woman, it was fairly safe, and I probably should just get in the car.’ That first ride together in the back seat of Jerry’s pal’s 1967 VW Beetle eventually grew into 50 years of love and marriage, including two sons and five grandchildren.”

An Extremely Sad And Distressing Photograph Of Amy Winehouse At Her Last Concert Ever In Belgrade | Serbia, 2011
This is very distressing. The poor woman was hounded by the press and her father was (is) a pig - chasing after her even when she wanted some privacy - for money and exposure. He should be locked up. And here's another example of a human being harassed by the paparazzi. Shame on them.
I remeber how the paparazzi rang at her door at night and told her a freind of hers had a horrible accident - she ran out barely dressed and distraught. the photo was bought by all the magzines, which were sold to all those delighted readers who love seeing a talented woman torn down. He Man Who Cut Out His Own Appendix
Russian explorer Leonid Rogozov was in the middle of Antartica when he realised he had appendicitis and needed an appendectomy straight away. Being the only medic on sight and his appendix hours away from bursting and thus spreading a bacterial infection, he decided he would operate on himself. Rogozov instructed his team to sterilise his equipment and had them set up a mirror below his right hip. He injected local anaesthetic, and despite accidentally slicing his lower intestine, completed the surgery successfully and recovered within 2 weeks | 1961
The last photo show depicts Rogozov returning from his expedition healed and healthy
He also became the reason some Antarctica facilities require you to have your appendix removed before working there - to prevent this from happening again.

Load More Replies...Sorry, but this guy was an idiot and a pest. I know he's a 'hero' to most Australians, but really - half of the things he pestered should just have been left alone.
Nobody should be treating wild animals like this. He was extremely disrespectful with the animals, just a showman. A person who cared for the animals would photograph them from the distance but not stress them
I'm not sure. I think it's ok to pick up animals like this if it's for awareness that'll lead to their protection.
Load More Replies...In response to the common sentiment here that Irwin was cruel to animals by interacting with them in a way that likely bothered many of them, I just want to say 2 things. 1) I don't think his bothering of wild animals resulted in trauma for them and I don't believe he would have behaved the way he did if he thought he was causing trauma; and 2) what he built by becoming so famous led to a world-class facility that rescues, rehabilitates and releases thousands of wild animals a year in Australia. I appreciate the sentiment, and agree, that people should generally leave wild animals alone, but condemning this man for his tactics used to create interest in even the "ugly" animals really seems to fit the definition of allowing perfect to be the enemy of good. I am an animal lover, I feed the birds that live around me species-appropriate food, and I don't even partake in the enjoyment of watching them eat because most of them don't like to be watched. So I get it. But give Irwin a break.
I really miss his shows. I used to watch them with my papa when I was a kid, and was hooked to them. Robert Irwin is the second version of him!

We see this repeating now in Ukraine. I cried for half an hour straight at the story of the Ukraine soldier who couldn't let go of the toy ambulance his son gave him before they were separated. So sad and cruel.

Barack Obama Playing With His Grandfather At The Beach, C. 1966
It's just a kid at the beach, playing with a piece of driftwood. Don't look for darkness where there is none.
Load More Replies...Wild when you actually take the time to think about it. Grandpa was probably just enjoying playing with his grandson in the beach, little imagining he had a future two term President laughing on his shoulders. Too bad his grandparents and his mother died before he was elected. Considering all the s**t they would’ve gone through because Obama and his sister were mixed race, it would’ve been such a sweet moment—-a triumph over the haters. Too bad as well that there were haters like that in Congress during those 8 years, and eventually emerging from under their rocks nationwide because of the orange stain that was elected next (f**k no, absolutely not voted for by me).
for some reason I think his grandfather looks more like him than he does. *this is weird in my head

I love that nobody ever mentions that there was already a famous English singer called Davy Jones (born two years earlier in 1945) who was the lead singer of the British group "The Monkees" who had their own TV show, and sang "Daydream Believer" and "I'm a Believer" (yes kids the song in Shrek) ...then I saw her face, now I'm a believer.... etc. David Bowie was born two years later in 1947 (also British) so would have had to change his performing name anyway through copyright rules. But I imagine he would have anyway. In some ways I think every adult should get to pick an extra name for themselves when they're older and know who they are... and I love that performance artists are brave enough to do so!
The first 10 years of his career were horrible. Every band failed, every single flopped. But he pulled through and became a star.

Ethel gazed sternly into the distance, oblivious to the blubbering worm at her feet. She had asked for mink, he tried to fob her off with dyed rabbit - divorce was inevitable
Divorce court in 1948? Realistically, the reason for the split likely involved domestic abuse. It's not uncommon for abusers to excessively beg for forgiveness. I hope she stuck with the decision that was safest for her.
More likely adultery. You have to prove 'extreme cruelty' for domestic violence and that would basically mean having broken bones. Anything less you'd be unlikely to be able to prove. Adultery or abandonment were the only real ways women could be sure to be granted a divorce (I think conviction of a felony in some states but I'm not sure it was all of them). I suspect she has evidence of adultery and I'm not convinced he necessarily wants the wife back so much as he's scared of what its going to do to his bank balance.

Queen Elizabeth II's Wedding Cake,1947
The UK was still under rationing at the time so the Australian girl guides donated some of the ingredients.
Actually, that is Princess Elizabeth's wedding cake. She did not become Queen Elizabeth II until 1952.

According to the Chippewa people, and eyewitness accounts he passed away due to pneumonia at the age of 137, placing his birth year at 1785. He married 8 times, and had an adopted son who also maintains that his father’s age was indeed, 137. Many have found conflicting evidence that identifies him to have been 95-100, yet nothing sufficient to consolidate his actual age.
Well, he don't look 100. It was uncommon for Indigenous people to keep records of birth dates and death dates. You just have to go by what they say.

One Of The Earlier Photos Taken Of The ‘Friends’ Cast, While On A Private Jet To | Las Vegas, 1994
I've seen this before. I think it was to let them enjoy a last moment in the public without recognition.
They were given $500 to spend in Las Vegas by the director and he told them it would be the last time the six of them would ever be able to walk anywhere together without being recognized.
Two years later I bet they would never have been allowed to all fly on the same plane.
A French Woman Who Befriended And Formed Relations With Nazis, Is Having Her Head Shaved By French Civilians, As To Publicly Mark And Shame Her | Montelimar, France, 29 August 1944.
This is horrible. Most of these women were not "cheap hussies" but just trying to save their children from starvation. I'm not a mum but I would do that too to save my children.
And a lot of these women were actually spies. They willingly associated with the Nazis to get information & pass it on to the Resistance, knowing that they would be despised & treated horribly. Many of them never said a word for decades about the spying, even when this was done to them.
Load More Replies...I always hate this pictures. Yes, maybe some were convinced nazis or people who wanted to gain power betraying their country. But most were just people trying to survive in a war that destroyed their country. How many women got raped by soldiers, pregnant and then misstreated by their peers and called collaborators?
While this is true, it didn't save anyone. The French suffered a lot under Nazi occupation, so you can imagine why they'd be so harsh to anyone who was even friendly to the enemy...

1.5 Million Helium Balloons Released By Charity Organisation United Way Of Cleveland
The event was hosted in an attempt to generate publicity by breaking the world record while simultaneously creating an artistic statement in the process | Ohio, 1986. Photographs by Thom Sheridan
.
However disaster closely followed the grand event. The balloons quickly collided with a cold-air front and heavy rain, which resulted in the helium-fuelled balloons falling back down to earth. Clogging water ways, causing car accidents, damages to pastures, and problems for airports derived soon after. With exceeding damages numerous lawsuits were filed against the charity.
They also massively hindered the search and rescue effort for a missing fisherman. He was later found, drowned.
He had been crying 'Help me!' in a very high voice for hours.
Load More Replies...Our helium supply is finite; we will run out in less than 30 years unless we can stop wasting it for fun or find a way to harvest it from space. Or a way to make uranium decay faster.

And McD's refuse to pull out of Moscow in spite of what's happening in Ukraine.
I've heard of this. I'm going to play devil's advocate, despite how much I hate this war, and ponder if some companies are playing it neutral, and that there may be other things going on behind the scenes the public doesn't know about between Russia and companies. Just a thought. Because it's not really about Russian people against Ukrainians. It's about Putin's fragile ego and lack of anger management. The Russian people, most of them, don't want this war. Why deprive them of big macs and salty, salty fries? They go through enough oppression and deal with enough anti-western propaganda. Come to think of it, it's wise of McDs, because if they pull out of Russia that might make it easier for Russia to go back to Soviet times. Just a thought, though.
