When we call a place home, instead of a house, we’re ascribing a sort of positive emotion to it. But on the flip side, a windowless, empty house can evoke melancholy, sad, and even spooky emotions as our brains wonder why the people left in the first place. Mortgage costs are boring, it must be ghosts.
The “Old and Abandoned Houses” Facebook page gathers images of buildings from a bygone age that no one lives in anymore. So get comfortable as you scroll through and be sure to upvote your favorites and comment why you think some of these places are devoid of people below.

Grimmenstein Castle, Austria
Does anybody know what that little outbuilding at the bottom of the path was used for? I couldn't find anything online.
It's a shrine. It probably used to house the crucified Christ, Austria is full of them.

That's just Aunt Maisy, she doesn't get out much. 😂😂😂
Load More Replies...If this were near me and I could afford it, I would fix it up myself on the weekends and have the coolest house in the world in just a few years! Stucco the outside, gut the inside, new windows and doors, and you've got a dream house! I can only assume that this is in an area that no one wants to live, or that is owned by someone who wants millions for it and would rather let it decay than sell it cheap to someone who will fix it up!
Abandoned home, but still can be hired out for events, even has central heating.
Grimmenstein Castle is definitively NOT a lost place anymore. It was renovated by the new owner, Mr. Markus Albero Grimmenstein and since 2014 it is open to the public. https://www.wieneralpen.at/en/a-grimmenstein-castle https://burg-grimmenstein.at/ With best regards Dr. Reinhold Hirschwehr
A Boot-Shaped House Hidden Deep In The UK Forest
It appears as if the old woman who lived in this shoe finally gave all those kids the boot.
She didn't give them the boot. She buried them under the toe and said "I'M FREE!"
Load More Replies...This is on the Isle of Wight, it used to be part of a holiday camp in the 1970s and built as a children's playhouse.
Black gang chine - creepy and fun at the same time
Load More Replies...Considering most kids aren't exposed to nursery rhymes these days, (many are pretty violent, like this one) it's sad to think that the kids a couple of generations from now won't have a clue about why this was built.
While on the surface, these are mostly just decrepit old buildings, there are some psychological factors in play that make them fascinating to us. First and foremost, we do have an innate curiosity about abandoned places, as some part of our brain wants to confirm if it’s truly abandoned. Perhaps we think we can find something interesting or find answers to why people left.
It’s also worth noting that in most cases, the places we live in are not abandoned, so it’s a unique chance to see just what age does to a home, something we don’t see every day. Add in the fact that many of these houses are built in an “older” era and it’s easy to see why the average person might find such a building interesting.

Much of it was damaged or destroyed during this period. After the war it became a music school, and now it is a visitor attraction.
I imagine the whole place to be abandoned. No one is rich enough to just abandon a bathroom!
Imagine the poor maids who have to clean all that intricate plasterwork. (But it's so worth it for the one who gets to use it, all the same!)
We aren’t the only people who think that old “ruins” are interesting, there is some evidence that in the 18th and 19th centuries, Medieval castles, no longer necessary as fortifications, were purposefully allowed to crumble and fall apart, as they would yield “aesthetically pleasing” ruins. While modern historians might grumble at this, the logic is sound.

The Kopice Palace in Poland. It was destroyed by fire in 1958. Last I heard it was on market for offers near about 6 million PLN (about 1.1 million sterling, 1.37 million USD). Bring your toolbox.

In cases where there weren’t readily available ruins, people would simply fake them. Architect Johann Ferdinand Hetzendorf von Hohenberg designed a set of “Roman ruins” for the garden of the Schönbrunn Palace in Vienna, Austria. The Hapsburg rulers of the time, like many fashionable people, had a passing interest in the ancient world and didn’t think fake ruins were weird at all.

Probably feather mattresses stack on each other, my great grandma (Italian) had something like that.
Load More Replies...A while back, I did a deep dive into the topic of why couples slept in separate beds in the late 19th to mid 20th centuries. Various reasons: entire peasant families slept in one bed, so this was a sign of conspicuous consumption. Also, it (somewhat) lessened the chance of airborne viruses. Wives liked it because husbands were often stinky tobacco users and, not to put too fine a point on it, a lot of them brought VD back home from the brothel.
Jebus isn't doing much to keep the roof intact. Maybe they should have invoked the patron saint of architectural shingles?

Looks more like a hospital or a sanatorium...or a library. Maybe because in the country where I was born, many buildings that looked like this were expropriated from the owners and turned into hospitals, asylums, sanatoriums and libraries, wo when I see something exactly like this, it's hard to imagine it as a place to actually live.
For some, an abandoned house isn’t enough, they need a whole street or even a region. This is why some companies make a profit by offering tours of Pripyat, near Chornobyl, still mostly restricted since its nuclear power plant suffered a catastrophic failure in 1986. People have a chance to explore a ghost town, plus see a relatively untouched Soviet town, as long as they don’t care about a little exposure to radiation.

Load More Replies...My buddy’s house is also covered in some type of climber. He left to stay with family during the first covid lockdown for three monts, when he came back the doors and windows were covered, he had to borrow tools from neighbours to cut it just to get into the house. So this house does not look very abandon-y, someone is maintaining that plant.
Window frames are far to white for this to be abandoned. The plants on the building have been trimmed and maintained. Hell, the home owner is likely inside.
Janelas pintadinhas de branco, portas bem conservadas, tudo lindinho... abandona? jamais.
This is perhaps the same psychology that drives people to explore the most uncomfortable caves known to man, even if it means risking life and limb to see a bit of rock that no one else has. Of course, by definition, an abandoned house can’t be “unseen” since it had to have been at least built.
Your Inheritance... Keep It Or Sell It?
Yeah, that’s about right, only I’d sell it to someone who signed airtight legal documents stating that they will NOT tear it down or make it unrecognizable through alterations. It would be OK to move it if the neighborhood is bad, and then they can do what they want with the land, but they cannot destroy or greatly alter the house’s design, inside and out, except for updating plumbing, electric, and HVAC, and restoring, repairing, or replacing anything with matching items (example: crown molding that’s been greatly damaged and can’t be repaired should be replaced with matching crown molding, either from a salvager who has a duplicate design, or by having the replacement special made to match). Modern architecture is most often badly designed and cheaply made, so I have great appreciation for older, well made structures built by true artisans. Imagine the woodworkers and carvers working on all that gingerbread. The floors and moldings inside are probably made from good quality solid wood too. Some TLC from someone who know what they’re doing would bring this house back to its former glory. I hope someone with money who greatly appreciates it buys it. Unfortunately, I don’t have that kind of money, or I would do it myself.

If you are still interested in exploring an abandoned house and looking at these images isn’t enough, there are some safety tips one should follow. First, get permission if you can. Amazing Abandoned Castle's In The World - Scotland
"Dunalastair House was designed by Andrew Heiton, a Perth-based architect, who also designed the Atholl Palace Hotel and Dunkeld railway station. It was really only used as it was built to be used up until the First World War because after that the staff needed to run such a big house were no longer available. During the Second World War it was requisitioned and used first as a Polish boys’ and then girls’ school and during this period it was considerably damaged, which included the loss of a Millais painting which was destroyed in a fire in the drawing room. The house’s contents were sold in the mid fifties after the current owner’s grandmother’s death and the house was badly vandalised in the sixties when the lead was stolen from the roof. In those days it was not viable to repair it and no grants were available and it deteriorated very quickly from then on with most removable parts being stolen. Various ideas have been put forward for restoring it, but the cost would be huge."

Yes, even though the building is "abandoned" the property still belongs to someone: a distant relative, a bank, a trust. The contents are part of the house and belong to whomever owns it. Taking anything would be considered theft. Not that it stops others from entering and taking.

For those curious it's a played out coal mining island. Now it's a tourist attraction and source of friction between Japan and Korea due to Japan's refusal to acknowledge the slave labor used at the site prior to and during WW2, despite having previously agreed to do so.
The claim of slavery is a one-sided Korean view. The island was created because of the coal bubble, and records show that Hashima's salary was higher than that of the mainland. Stores, restaurants, hospitals, movie theaters, schools, and even casinos (pachinko) existed.
