When we call a place home, instead of a house, we’re ascribing a sort of positive emotion to it. But on the flip side, a windowless, empty house can evoke melancholy, sad, and even spooky emotions as our brains wonder why the people left in the first place. Mortgage costs are boring, it must be ghosts.

The “Old and Abandoned Houses” Facebook page gathers images of buildings from a bygone age that no one lives in anymore. So get comfortable as you scroll through and be sure to upvote your favorites and comment why you think some of these places are devoid of people below.

Does anybody know what that little outbuilding at the bottom of the path was used for? I couldn't find anything online.

It's a shrine. It probably used to house the crucified Christ, Austria is full of them.

If this were near me and I could afford it, I would fix it up myself on the weekends and have the coolest house in the world in just a few years! Stucco the outside, gut the inside, new windows and doors, and you've got a dream house! I can only assume that this is in an area that no one wants to live, or that is owned by someone who wants millions for it and would rather let it decay than sell it cheap to someone who will fix it up!

Grimmenstein Castle is definitively NOT a lost place anymore. It was renovated by the new owner, Mr. Markus Albero Grimmenstein and since 2014 it is open to the public. https://www.wieneralpen.at/en/a-grimmenstein-castle https://burg-grimmenstein.at/ With best regards Dr. Reinhold Hirschwehr

Considering most kids aren't exposed to nursery rhymes these days, (many are pretty violent, like this one) it's sad to think that the kids a couple of generations from now won't have a clue about why this was built.

While on the surface, these are mostly just decrepit old buildings, there are some psychological factors in play that make them fascinating to us. First and foremost, we do have an innate curiosity about abandoned places, as some part of our brain wants to confirm if it’s truly abandoned. Perhaps we think we can find something interesting or find answers to why people left.

It’s also worth noting that in most cases, the places we live in are not abandoned, so it’s a unique chance to see just what age does to a home, something we don’t see every day. Add in the fact that many of these houses are built in an “older” era and it’s easy to see why the average person might find such a building interesting.

Dietel Palace, Sosnowiec, Poland.. Completed in 1900 Heinrich Dietel, it functioned as his personal home until 1945 when it was taken over by the Soviets as a base. Much of it was damaged or destroyed during this period. After the war it became a music school, and now it is a visitor attraction.

We aren’t the only people who think that old “ruins” are interesting, there is some evidence that in the 18th and 19th centuries, Medieval castles, no longer necessary as fortifications, were purposefully allowed to crumble and fall apart, as they would yield “aesthetically pleasing” ruins. While modern historians might grumble at this, the logic is sound.

In cases where there weren’t readily available ruins, people would simply fake them. Architect Johann Ferdinand Hetzendorf von Hohenberg designed a set of “Roman ruins” for the garden of the Schönbrunn Palace in Vienna, Austria. The Hapsburg rulers of the time, like many fashionable people, had a passing interest in the ancient world and didn’t think fake ruins were weird at all.

Reminds me a bit of the Promenade from the Village Square in 'The Prisoner'.

And before you judge, consider that modern humans regularly erect haunted houses, horror escape rooms and take tours of places associated with death. There is a thrill associated with a location, while the houses in this list also might be just spooky enough to titillate a real horror fan.

A while back, I did a deep dive into the topic of why couples slept in separate beds in the late 19th to mid 20th centuries. Various reasons: entire peasant families slept in one bed, so this was a sign of conspicuous consumption. Also, it (somewhat) lessened the chance of airborne viruses. Wives liked it because husbands were often stinky tobacco users and, not to put too fine a point on it, a lot of them brought VD back home from the brothel.

Maybe because in the country where I was born, many buildings that looked like this were expropriated from the owners and turned into hospitals, asylums, sanatoriums and libraries, wo when I see something exactly like this, it's hard to imagine it as a place to actually live.

For some, an abandoned house isn’t enough, they need a whole street or even a region. This is why some companies make a profit by offering tours of Pripyat, near Chornobyl, still mostly restricted since its nuclear power plant suffered a catastrophic failure in 1986. People have a chance to explore a ghost town, plus see a relatively untouched Soviet town, as long as they don’t care about a little exposure to radiation.

This had to be somebody without any surviving family members, that's quite a bit to leave behind. Then again this could be the cleanest room in the house.

A lot of the old furniture is gorgeous. I'm surprised no one has taken it. Other than being beautiful, seems to me they'd be worth a lot as antiques.

Looks like entrance to the Imperial City in the Elder Scrolls Oblivion.

Others might go to Hashima Island, Japan, where mines have been abandoned since the 1970s. While not really dangerous, These locations are still “wild” enough that visitors feel like they may stumble across something new or unexpected. The presence of a tour guide would suggest otherwise, but most prefer an interesting delusion to reality.

My buddy’s house is also covered in some type of climber. He left to stay with family during the first covid lockdown for three monts, when he came back the doors and windows were covered, he had to borrow tools from neighbours to cut it just to get into the house. So this house does not look very abandon-y, someone is maintaining that plant.

Not abandoned. You can tell it's being maintained, because the creeper is trained around the doors and windows, and the steps are clear.

This is perhaps the same psychology that drives people to explore the most uncomfortable caves known to man, even if it means risking life and limb to see a bit of rock that no one else has. Of course, by definition, an abandoned house can’t be “unseen” since it had to have been at least built.

Yeah, that’s about right, only I’d sell it to someone who signed airtight legal documents stating that they will NOT tear it down or make it unrecognizable through alterations. It would be OK to move it if the neighborhood is bad, and then they can do what they want with the land, but they cannot destroy or greatly alter the house’s design, inside and out, except for updating plumbing, electric, and HVAC, and restoring, repairing, or replacing anything with matching items (example: crown molding that’s been greatly damaged and can’t be repaired should be replaced with matching crown molding, either from a salvager who has a duplicate design, or by having the replacement special made to match). Modern architecture is most often badly designed and cheaply made, so I have great appreciation for older, well made structures built by true artisans. Imagine the woodworkers and carvers working on all that gingerbread. The floors and moldings inside are probably made from good quality solid wood too. Some TLC from someone who know what they’re doing would bring this house back to its former glory. I hope someone with money who greatly appreciates it buys it. Unfortunately, I don’t have that kind of money, or I would do it myself.

If you are still interested in exploring an abandoned house and looking at these images isn’t enough, there are some safety tips one should follow. First, get permission if you can. Walking around an old house only to get slapped with a trespassing charge is probably not fun for anyone. Avoid going alone and preferably tell someone where you are headed, just in case.

"Dunalastair House was designed by Andrew Heiton, a Perth-based architect, who also designed the Atholl Palace Hotel and Dunkeld railway station. It was really only used as it was built to be used up until the First World War because after that the staff needed to run such a big house were no longer available. During the Second World War it was requisitioned and used first as a Polish boys’ and then girls’ school and during this period it was considerably damaged, which included the loss of a Millais painting which was destroyed in a fire in the drawing room. The house’s contents were sold in the mid fifties after the current owner’s grandmother’s death and the house was badly vandalised in the sixties when the lead was stolen from the roof. In those days it was not viable to repair it and no grants were available and it deteriorated very quickly from then on with most removable parts being stolen. Various ideas have been put forward for restoring it, but the cost would be huge."

If you do end up going, don’t say you weren’t warned by us, the law, 1001 films, and common sense. But do be sure to take some photos and document these locations for the rest of the world to see. In many cases, these houses have probably sat untouched and unseen for decades, so it would be interesting and educational for all to get a peek inside.

Not abandoned and not old. This was built only a few years ago, designed by architect Sebastian Peton. He is influenced by Gaudi and doesn't like having straight lines in his buildings. He's done a lot of curvy, bendy higgledy piggledy designs that are all very quirky.

It's painful that they would just leave their creations behind like that when they shut down. Although the necks, frets, etc. aren't uniform, so maybe someone brought in guitars salvaged from other places to stage the photo.

That faded red colour was often achieved by mixing lime with oxblood. It also strengthened the limewash or plaster.

Yes, even though the building is "abandoned" the property still belongs to someone: a distant relative, a bank, a trust. The contents are part of the house and belong to whomever owns it. Taking anything would be considered theft. Not that it stops others from entering and taking.

Absolutely not abandoned. This used to be the Midland Grand Hotel at St Pancras Station, then the building was used as offices from the 1930s. It was redeveloped, and has become a combination of a hotel with part of the building having residential apartments known as St Pancras Chambers.

This has been on BP before &, as a Panda pointed out at the time, it's a not a former castle/house. Rather, it's the Airlie Monument erected in memory of the 11th Earl of Airlie who was killed during the Boer War in June 1900

Generally upkeep became too expensive, especially at the end of the feudal system - what I'm wondering is, if it is why so many cars, is it now a tourist attraction?

I visited there in the 1980s and it's a wonderfully restored castle. The tour included the factoid that as a working castle in the Middle Ages, the knights received a ration of 7 liters of wine daily and the women 4. There's also an abnormally large suit of armor. It's real and the original owner was close to 7 feet tall. The view of the Moselle river is spectacular.

I might be wrong, but it looks like Glendalough, about 60km from Dublin, in Wicklow mountains. Dates back to St.Kevin. It's abandoned, aka not serving as church anymore, but major tourist attraction.

This appears to be Halcyon Hall at what had been Bennett School for Girls in Millbrook, NY, but I'm not sure what's up with the reference to the Marion family, which makes it sound like a private residence, as it was still operating as a school in 1965 (unless they were visiting their daughter on campus and happened to snap a photo?)

There has been a lot of discussions and pressure from inhabitants of the town and local elected folks for its owners to renovate it. Good news is that earlier this year it was finally bought by the townhall of the village from its owners, for 100 euros. Renovation works are now planned, hopefully it will be brought back to life !

For those curious it's a played out coal mining island. Now it's a tourist attraction and source of friction between Japan and Korea due to Japan's refusal to acknowledge the slave labor used at the site prior to and during WW2, despite having previously agreed to do so.

The claim of slavery is a one-sided Korean view. The island was created because of the coal bubble, and records show that Hashima's salary was higher than that of the mainland. Stores, restaurants, hospitals, movie theaters, schools, and even casinos (pachinko) existed.
