When most of us think about the word “data'' our eyes glaze over as a million Excel cells appear in our minds, putting us to sleep. So clever folks out there rolled up their sleeves and got to work, making visual depictions of data that help us better understand the world.

This is the result of an old dialectal boundary. and another fun fact: In Northeastern Germany you will find lots of places that end in -ow, showing that the old Slawic Tribes were living in that area, way before any of today's national borders.
If you have ever taken a casual look at an average map of the world, you have no doubt been struck by the sheer size of Russia and, to a lesser extent, Canada. This does make sense, as these are the largest countries on the planet, however, did you know that a little feature of mapmaking called Mercator projection makes them look significantly larger than they really are?
This comes from the Flemish geographer and cartographer Gerardus Mercator, who created a “cylindrical” map to represent the world in 1569. After all, unless you are looking at a globe, most maps are drawn, painted, or printed on a rectangular surface. Imagine the tube-like maps pirates are always dragging around and you have a pretty good depiction of an early Mercator map.

After all, the real landmasses on the planet, which are spherical, don’t translate 1-to-1 on a rectangular map. Certain sections end up stretched and, as a result, appear to be a lot larger than they actually are. Mercator chose to “focus” the map on the northern hemisphere, where locations closer to the “top” of the map would end up seeming larger. Hence Russia and Canada being absolutely gigantic on so many maps.

In fact, at the time, these maps were specifically created to aid in marine navigation. While it’s quite irrelevant to us, early seafarers could use a Mercator map to get a “straight” bearing when sailing to a new location. On a map that doesn’t use Mercator projection, the bearing would be a curve, representing the curve of the globe.
U.S. States That Have Banned The Most Books (In Autumn 2022)
At least it started backfiring in Utah, banning the bible from schools. For content of murder, violence, sexual things etc.
The bible should be banned in schools as it falls into most of the stated categories/criterion for banning.
Load More Replies...I'm surprised this many came through 😅 Last one is bëstiality, bïgotry or different?
Load More Replies...I'm so confused, how can they ban violence when... gun violence... Don't you want your kids to be prepared?
First not one book on this list is banned from you buying it or owning it or reading it Second, if you want your kid prepared, shouldn't you be the one who decides for what? And control the information the state provides?
Load More Replies...Read a history book, this isn't fascism, no books were banned from being purchased or owned or distributed except through public school libraries. Or is Hustler also a banned book?
Load More Replies...It could be. But it's also true that, according to an article in _The Guardian_ in the “general and literary fiction” category, of the 1000 bestselling fiction titles in 2020, 75% of were by female authors. So there's likely to be a skew. Not germane to this, but other interesting tidbit: "A diversity survey, released in February by the UK Publishers Association, had 64% of the publishing workforce as female with women making up 78% of editorial, 83% of marketing and 92% of publicity." Don't even get me started on the class analysis... it's so unfashionable :)
Load More Replies...I wish they would stop banning books. I have a character trait that causes me to read all banned books and I’m falling way behind!
So do I! I have a desperate need to read all stories that are "too much".
Load More Replies...I searched and tried to find out what books were banned in my state of Massachusetts since this thing says there were a few. Neither of their sources seemed to suggest any had been, and the first (Pen America) has a map like this for 2022 in which it shows Mass having zero bans. The overall point of this infographic still stands - books are being banned in the US - but the company that made this graphic has me asking questions.
I agree. I made a similar comment about California.
Load More Replies...based on the subject matters for banned books, the Bible should be in first place, it checks all the categories plus some more...
And if schools remove them at the behest of parents, that's up to them. But the Bible isn't banned as you can literally find it in any church or hotel or online or at bookstores or at Amazon and no, Books are not being banned.

Load More Replies...Banning them is just an advert for me - I'm totally reading the banned book list
They are not banned and yes you are a victim of propaganda. Think about it. Would you have heard of any of these authors or their books of they hadn't written adult content in the form of a kids book?
Load More Replies...Is taking a book out of an elementary or even high school really banning it? Pretty sure all of these books are still available in Florida and Texas, so calling them banned doesn't seem exactly correct. I mean, Sarah J. Maas novels are basically cheesy romance novels in fantasy form, and are pretty graphic. They really are not appropriate for kids.
This graphic is falsely equating book challenges with "bans."
Load More Replies...Hustler, by your definition of banned, is banned. Worth reading?
Load More Replies...Honestly Sarah J. Maas books being banned isn’t that bad imo. At least, for school libraries (public libraries are a different story). Her books are incredibly smutty at times- I read the Throne of Glass series, and while it’s pretty good (ignoring a few irritatingly overplayed tropes), I would understand a school library not wanting it in the shelves because of the sheer amount of sexual content. There’s a difference between sex ed and repeated unrealistic sex scenes. Margaret Atwood being banned and other important and relevant political books banned is bad, though. Handmaid’s Tale is an excellent thought-provoking book. Sarah J. Maas books aren’t though-provoking, just fun and not school appropriate.
Completely agree on the Maas books. Definitely for older teens and adults only, content-wise
Load More Replies...Actually, in Florida there are no banned books. they are just books pulled from libraries for not being age appropriate. you can buy all of the books
Yeah, this graphic is worded poorly and misrepresents a real concern.
Load More Replies...So is your understanding of the word banned
Load More Replies...TBF the books aren't banned from sale, just from being available in schools. Which is bad enough, of course.
Why? "Gender Queer" actually shows a boy giving oral sex to another boy. It's bad to remove this book from school library shelves why?
Load More Replies...Some of those books were banned for good reason. Gender Queer for example- was being distributed at an elementary school…
Someone who actually thought for than the hysteria. Good job.
Load More Replies...From what I've seen looking at the list a huge amount of religious books have been banned here in Florida as well so I'm surprised to not see that category on the list.
They aren't banned. In the majority of cases they are under review in regards accessibility at what age in public schools.
Load More Replies...I think this information is very outdated. California actually has a law prohibiting book bans, recently signed by Governor Newsom.
This graphic is misrepresenting the situation. These are not numbers of actual book bans but of book challenges, and even then, their numbers seem off. It's still an important issue, but this graphic isn't helping.
Load More Replies...What does a ban mean? Not allowed in the state at all, possesion illegal, people smuggle the books in illegaly with steep charges if found out?
Finally someone who gets it. These books aren't banned. By the definition they use for what a banned book is, ignoring content, Hustler is banned, Penthouse is banned, Penthouse Letters is banned and on. Books are reviewed often for two reasons, content and space. It's not some Orwellian plot, nor a prelude to a fascist dictatorship. Get a clue people.
Load More Replies...Shocking! /s. As a former librarian in the US this map reads exactly as you'd expect our country to be, sadly.
As a librarian, you should have a better grasp on the word banned.
Load More Replies...What's the difference between "ban" and "considered inappropriate for the likely audience"?
The difference is the outrage generated by whatever special-interest group feels affected. The word "ban" plays well in focus groups.
Load More Replies...anything religious should be banned in schools, as it has no place in education (though the US education is a piece of horse diarrhea anyways), nothing else should be banned
Every decision to publish is a political act influenced by values. Since every book can't be held in a school library, they must make values based choices about what to shelve. Therefore, it's inevitable there will be conflicts between stakeholders with different values. Some will feel like certain content is not appropriate for certain ages. These people have been applying pressure on the elected school boards to review and potentially remove the books from the schools. Those are the facts. This is what's been happening. There is nothing Nazi-ish about this. It's possible for people of goodwill to disagree on what's appropriate for children. And it's possible for them to completely agree with the message of a book, but feel like it's not presented in an age appropriate way. I'll get shat on for it, but I'll die on the hill that that's not a 'ban'. The way to get *your* values acted upon, is to approach the elected school boards and tell them you will organize against their reelection.
I bet Hustler isn't allowed in public schools there..... Just saying
Load More Replies...This is so scary...this is what happened in Nazi Germany in the 1930s,.I can't believe the US would do the same.
No this is not what happened in Nazi Germany. Read an actual history book.
Load More Replies...So Hustler is on your shelves? Or is it banned and just not reported?
Load More Replies...It’s pleasantly surprising that the states that are basically the buckle of the Bible Belt (Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Georgia) had no banned books.
Dont be so sure. The map is confusing and appears to be attempted bans in 2022. Perhaps that area has already banned numerous titles and didn’t need to add more. I suspect you’d have to dig county by county to know for sure.
Load More Replies...You surely can't call for a book to be banned until you have actually read it!
This literally isn't accurate considering that schools in California have banned more than 10 books.
I don't recognize any of these books/authors, probably because I live in Texas and they're all banned
Texas thinks is a state with freedom. Lol. They can't even read books they want
Yes they can. You can order any book on this list from Amazon in Texas. They are in many bookstores in Texas. They are in many public libraries in Texas. Cry me a river that just because your elementary school kids can't read a book like "Gender Queer" with an actual illustration of oral sex gets removed for being age inappropriate.
Load More Replies...Banning books is a symptom of the downfall of democracy and the beginning of despotism, as well as the downfall of intellectuality, science and freedom of speech and thinking, and also a sign of fanatical beliefs (be it politics or religion).
Quit lying. All these books on this list are available for purchase on Amazon. Many are available at public libraries and in bookstores. This is not the downfall of democracy for parents to determine what content is available for their kids at a public school. Get a grip and take off the tinfoil hat
Load More Replies...Some of these titles definitely deserve to be banned, but it's a little disappointing that books about violence and mental health are being censored.
I have issues with books on health, mental or physical; books on grief or death, puberty, LGBTQ+, racism, basically anything to do with real life, are banned. No wonder there are a number of people who are messed up, unable to view any one who is not "them" as being a fellow human being who has rights - just like they do.
"Gender Queer" is written like a child picture book and shows oral sex graphically. These books aren't banned and as a parent you can buy them or borrow them from public libraries.
Load More Replies...None, this graphic is equating book challenges with successful bans.
Load More Replies...I wouldn't want a 9th grade person reading The Handmaid's Tale (not that I think it should be banned). The book scared the s**t out of me in my 40s. I'd rather they grew up thinking of how the world should be, then how the world is, and only last all the awful ways it COULD be. It's a cautionary tale and a very good one. It scares me now more than when I read it 10 years ago, considering how the world is going (getting worse for women every century on average). I think it's more appropriate for a senior. I live in Minnesota, USA, listed as 0 (zero) on the map. I'd be happy if Texas and Florida seceded from the Union.
Because parents decide what books their kids should read? Empowering the people to decide is always a bad thing?
Load More Replies...Banning books for dealing with death or grief? When those book banners p**** on, do we say they got banned?
They aren't banned and they were pulled from public school libraries because parents do have a say
Load More Replies...f**k Spotsylvania County and their school board. sincerely, a Virginian who lives next to them
Exactly. How dare parents be involved in what their kids read in school. Shane on then. The State will decide what is best.
Load More Replies...They don't count when Shakespeare is banned because he's a "dead, white guy." Fairfax County Schools, Virginia.
And at what age should kids be allowed to read this book? Is you say anyone under 12, you're the problem.
Load More Replies...No we do not. Hitler literally made books illegal. Not one of these books is prevented from being sold or owned in the United States. Quit fear mongering.
Load More Replies...Ellen Hopkins's books always sound like amazing stories, but I really hate the way she writes.
You know, maybe read a history book. These books aren't banned.

This sort of map has simply stuck around for hundreds of years, leading many people to draw somewhat incorrect conclusions about the real size of things. We are lucky that Russia and Canada really are the two largest countries, so the distortions don’t seem as bad. Other examples of distortion are the similarity between the UK and Madagascar, despite the latter being nearly twice as large.
