Human ingenuity and resilience know no bounds. After all, we did figure out how to send people to the Moon. Whether it’s something adjacent to rocket science or simple DIY, people’s creativity can truly be amazing. Admittedly, not all inventions have to change the world. Some simply make our life a little easier, and that’s okay too.

The subreddit r/RedNeckEngineering is dedicated to this kind of ingenuity. It’s a place for interesting homemade engineering, where people solve their problems with seemingly stupid solutions that actually work. Let us know the inventions on this list that impressed you the most, pandas, and don’t forget to upvote your favorites!

I’m surprised that they lie so flat, even if scored on the underside or cut into smaller pieces …?

Thermal treatment most likely. Judging by the tread - they are max 1cm thick after cutoff and therefor relatively easy to work with. I have similarly made mud flaps on my patrol (~5mm thick).

Suddenly, the women preparing the celebratory feast noticed the barn swaying back and forth. "Ruth! Jedediah tripped again." Ruth hung her head in shame as she watched the barn tip onto its side. Again.

Shows how well the barn had been built that it retains its solidity and rigidity whilst being lifted and moved, I can’t even move my flat pack tv unit without bits falling off or the whole thing changing shape (that’s the flat pack unit being rubbish not how my husband built it)

Those unfamiliar with the subreddit or with the term “redneck engineering” might be confused as to what it actually is. The synonyms would be makeshift repairs or jerry-rigging. The latter term has its own history with potential to offend (just as “redneck” does), but a makeshift something is probably your best bet when describing something in the realm of redneck engineering.

Another word that’s used frequently to describe makeshift repairs is MacGyvering. Sure, it’s very American-centric and probably doesn’t say a lot to people who weren’t around during the ‘80s. However, the Oxford Dictionaries site officially decreed that it was a verb on August 27, 2015.

There was a debate a couple of years ago on r/AskAnAmerican whether the term “redneck engineering” can be considered offensive or not. The general (as long as you don’t sort the comments by controversial) consensus is no. Many users were of the opinion that most of the “engineers” laugh at their inventions as well. It’s not offensive as long as the people are in on it themselves.

Laughing is also fair when the repair is obviously meant to make others laugh. Duct taping cracks in the asphalt? That’s hardly a functional fix. Some entries on this list are similar in this way, done only for entertainment.

Surely, nowadays redneck engineers don’t disarm atomic bombs with paper clips like MacGyver did. On the other hand, sometimes the results can be quite impressive. Redneck engineering usually happens under certain circumstances. Either within a short timeframe or limited by the wrong equipment, redneck engineering can actually lead to pretty exciting contraptions.

We spent 40,000 years inventing civilization so we wouldn't have to cook on a fire pit, shît in the woods, and sleep on the ground. The idea of doing it on purpose as a recreational activity baffles me.

My (almost redneck lol) Dad made a bucket contraption for camping that has a full toilet seat mounted to the top. Bucket has the bottom cut out, and is mounted to a wooden base so that you can dig a hole and then install it over top. Pretty ingenious!

Coming back to the synonyms, jerry-rigged has its own impressive linguistic history. The Merriam-Webster explains that it’s a mix of the terms jury-rigged and jerry-built that reached its prominence in the late 19th century. Jury-rigged was used in the 18th century strictly in a nautical context. It meant something constructed in a makeshift fashion.

In the mid 1800s, the term jerry-rigging came on the scene. It was used to describe something that was built cheaply and carelessly. Merriam-Webster also observes that jerry-rigging is seen as the inferior of the three, it is still a fully established and used term.

“Jerry-rigged” has another, not a very wholesome connotation. Dictionary.com writes that the word “jerry” was used by the British soldiers during World War I and II as a derogatory term towards Germans. The pronunciation of the first syllable of “German” was made into the English name Jerry and made as a pun.

Do the same to your door lock buttons. My step daughter thought she could just run into the store with the car unlocked, engine running, air conditioning on, her purse with the key in there, because no one would dare to open a door with her two big dogs in there. Well, the dogs locked the car from the inside. Fortunately my wife/her mother is a locksmith, so we had to rush down there and open her car before it ran out of gas and shut down the air conditioning for the dogs.

Other sources claim that the word “jerry” was how the British soldiers called the German helmets. In their minds, they resembled chamber pots, hence the derogatory nickname. The British soldiers used “jerry-rigged” to refer to machines that German soldiers left behind, repaired with salvaged parts.

The water from the tap in the bathtub doesn't get hot enough for us, which is why when we bathe we fill the sink opposite with water, create negative pressure in a hose and then lead the water into the bathtub via the hose.. very similar.

    1) I wonder if they could have just sold the double wide and used the money to build out the trailer portions. I have to believe that they will need to redo the wiring and plumbing either way. This looks like you could be mixing materials which will result in the weaker getting damaged and you are losing core strength. Uneven weight distribution will result in the potential for the middle to settle at a different rate. Overall I'm guessing you will have maybe 5 years before cracks and problems start to show up. In 20 years, these will be serious and costly. Of course if the idea is to sell, well that leads me to number 2)- A good home inspector is vital before buying a home. Even with city blessing, things like this will hurt a homebuyer and once you know it's a problem, you have to disclose it before selling. This is a trap for any future buyer.

I'd be furious if a landlord did that to me. Refusal to do a minor repair now means major replacement later. It also means the time will come when it does because of the landlord's refusal to actually fix it. When it breaks down, you're looking at several days with no a/C.

There is a good reason for that. HVAC (air conditioning) repair people are marketing criminals. If you call them for repairs to a unit that is older than 10 years they'll just red-tag it without even looking at it and file a code violation with the county. That's meant to persuade you to buy a new one from them and you'd have to, unless you want to p**s away a lot of time and money fighting with the county. So, any repairs that do not involve a professional HVAC criminal are to be favored.

This is not really a fix. An out-of-balance condenser fan motor will eventually destroy its own bearings, even if this stops the housing from squeaking.

My nextdoor neighbor did this to his AC. He also used a couple of zip ties to hold one of the protective grates in place. That's the only "maintenance" he's ever done to it. He ought to clear away the weeds and dirt that cling to the sides, but oh well... One of these days his AC is going to suffocate.

Misconception as to where the term "Redneck" came from. Not from a sun-fried neck; it comes from the red bandana worn around the necks of West Virginia coal miners fighting for the right to organize during the mining wars of the early 1900's which culminated in a gunfight. during the march on Blair Mountain in 1921. The red bandana and being called a "Redneck" were badges of honor (and still are, in my opinion, since I am a "bleeding-heart-pinko-commie-liberal").

Wouldn't it be faster for them to just drag the old, leaky nuclear reactors from their decommissioned submarines down the road and melt the snow with their decay heat? Wouldn't put it past them.

Post-Katrina, seeing something like this isn't uncommon along the Gulf Coast. On the Mississippi Gulf Coast (where Katrina actually made landfall) all house directly on the shots must be in stilts. This is a legit and legal way to have your home.

    RandomEpiBioPerson
    Community Member
2 years ago Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

Unfortunately, the current average is around 21, but can be under 15% or there are high efficiency ones that can exceed 22%, but not typically by much. Researched have managed to make some that are around 47.1% efficiency, which is pretty great, but the current materials they have used to create the cell structure to achieve this are not very cost effective, so they haven't been produced yet. However, there is a lot of research going into this field, so hopefully there will be better ones available sooner rather than later. It is still possible to have some benefit from them, but the setup here is not going to work well, if you rely on what you are spending, versus what you are getting out of it.

Actually, it will take some time, if ever that the structure will collapse. People used to boil water in leather "pots". The materials will only catch fire once there is insufficient water to absorb the heat. Only once the heat can no longer be absorbed does the fire spread. A lot of people think fire control is about how "wet the water is, it is more about heat absorption vs heat supply.

This is pretty industry-standard for fast leak fixes. Factories on a 24-hour production schedule the world round use this exact technique when the roof springs a leak. Except the tarp's usually tied off to nearby pipes with rope because that's cheaper and faster to set up.

The 7 adapters on the right are only intended for use when connecting a 3-pin cord to a 2-pin outlet and should be permanently attached using the cover plate mounting screw. Usually people just replace the outlet since the 2-pin ones are super old at this point. The first 3-way tap looks to be an ancient non-polarized variety, at least 50 years old. The 3-way tap plugged into the outlet itself is a normal modern type one.

Presumably because it is 220 volts and and the other is 110 volts. I really hope it doesn't use the same shaped plugs, otherwise something is going to go boom if you plug it into the wrong one.

It would be bad for a generator to get wet. Generators have brushes to carry the output current, alternators brushes only carry the field excitation voltage.

I would trust it fine in an emergency, especially since current draw is very, very low and nobody fùcks with or touches it, as long as either the paint isn't conductive or it's not touching the wall. No real danger if conditions above are met. 100+ years ago ALL wiring was like this in attics and walls but with NO INSULATION. Look up "knòb and tube wiring".

Not really, if noise/hum is the only problem needing attention; only dangerous if a bad short, but then 22ga wire will melt like a fuse link and go POOF. Danger will come from the hot metal. This danger would be nonexistent simply if a larger wire is used.

If that works like I think it does, it will cut the water off when the water level reaches the nozzle. There is quite a clever mechanism built into the handle of petrol/diesel pumps that cuts the fuel off when the tank is full.

No! An electric heating cooling strapped to a wooden pallet?!? That's both a fire waiting to happen and good way to die from smoke inhalation. And if, by some miracle, the smoke and fire doesn't kill you, whatever chemicals that pallet was potentially treated with will be doing a number on your system.

Out of boredom I did try this one summer. It does work to a very slight extent, but goes thru ice like crazy as your pumping warmer water back into your cooler. You would need a freezer full of ice blocks. The time and money spent to make this and pay for electric to freeze all the ice required. You might as well just go buy an AC.
