Hello, fellow Hobbits, how are you? There’s nothing like spending a bit of time around plants to revitalize you. Whether you go on a daily walk along a forest trail or tend to your verdant garden at home, you Pandas know for a fact what kind of positive impact spending time surrounded by nature really has on us all.
That’s where the r/gardening subreddit comes in. A wholesome online community of over 4.8 million members, it is a celebration of everything to do with gardens, green thumbs, and caring for plants. Aside from all the gorgeous pics that you’re about to see, you can also bask in the fact that gardening is something that we can all learn how to do well. All it takes is patience, a willingness to embrace your mistakes, and a supportive environment full of folks who can’t wait to lend you a helping hand.
Scroll down for some gardening goodness, upvote your fave pics, and tell us all about your relationship with the hobby in the comments, Pandas. What do you grow? How big is your garden? What’s your favorite plant and why? And when you’re done with this list, consider taking a stroll through Bored Panda’s earlier feature about the subreddit right over here.

Two Years I Quit Drinking And Got Addicted To Something A Little Healthier. Transformed My Yard All Alone, Did The Same To Myself In The Process
That is amazing. Especially how much the tree grew in two years and the other house disappeared and other things.
Look closer, Kenny. First shot was taken from a much closer spot than the second image. The tree and house are still there in the second image, just not as visible.

The Lighting Must Have Been Just Right, I Managed To Snap This Photo Of My Roses And My Dog This Morning And Thought You All Might Like It
Since the last time that Bored Panda wrote about the r/gardening subreddit, the community has grown by over 800k people. We’re incredibly glad to see that. We believe the sub is an incredibly wholesome niche on the internet because it helps people relax, gives them a space to be proud of their achievements, and offers a venue for all of that hard-earned gardening wisdom.
Meanwhile, the rest of the internet (us included) can borrow a bit of inspiration for our own plant projects. We might feel bad that we’ve been unable to take care of Succulent Number 39, but after going on r/gardening, we know not to give up.
Blue Smoke Cactus
i believe so, seen them in italy as well. the botanical name is Myrtillocactus and this particular version is called crested I think
Load More Replies...I have NEVER seen this type before! I'm in Ontario Canada so can't have them outside. Will they grow well inside? I must Google!
Definitely BUT they don’t care for prolonged frost and it did dip a little too low in LA last year. Keep it in a pot and maybe move to a greenhouse or inside for the winter. Which in LA is about December to late February. Happy planting!!
Bodacious
I with everyone who lived inside cities would do this. Think of how beautiful it would be! Also great for bees
Oh yeah, I live in the city and am the only one doing this around. I like that my neighbours have a nice view but I really, really wish they'd reciprocate...

Well done. I live in an apartment also, and I miss having a patio. I only have a small stoop that I share so I'm trying to create an indoor garden.
In the lull between Bored Panda’s last feature about r/gardening, yours truly has improved a tiny bit. I’ve leveled up my green thumb and, this time around, the Hobbits might even let me back into the Shire!
My Ficus is doing way better than before, and the Zamioculcas I’m taking care of for my friend is flourishing. I’m no master gardener yet (far from it!), but I definitely feel more confident about what I’m doing. One of the first things I do after waking up is to check on my plants. Hopefully, one day, I’ll have my very own garden where I can grow everything that doesn’t mind being under- and over-watered.
I Planted Bleeding Hearts Last Year Because My Wife Liked Them. She Passed Away In January. I Wasn’t Sure They Survived But My Son Took This Picture This Morning
That's what they're called. They're very pretty. My deepest condolences.
I am so sorry. I've always associated blue forget-me-nots always remind me of my step mom. She had thousands of them and taught me what they were. I wish more people still grew them.
I just planted one this summer hopefully next year I'll get to see it bloom!
So very sorry for your loss. May she Rest in peace and fly with the Angels.

I Added A Moon Gate To My Backyard Japanese Garden, I'm Really Happy With How It Turned Out
One of the moderators helping run the r/gardening subreddit told Bored Panda during an earlier interview that there’s no such thing as a green thumb or a black thumb. “Anybody can grow plants. Just a little bit of attention paid will yield results," they told us.
"I started modding on /r/gardening after I asked the [head] moderator about a post not appearing or something, and he offered me a moderator position," the mod, who wanted to stay anonymous, shared with Bored Panda earlier. Back then, over a decade ago, the sub had roughly 50k members.

Moss Garden I Put Together Using Moss Collected From Parking Lots
I really like moss, I can't explain it but I get so excited when I see lush growing moss. Lol
This kind of garden reminds me of the posts I see about aquarium users using lake sludge or real sea water, depending on the tank, to help create the biosphere faster, and many get excited about the random things that come from the plankton. That looks like a cool start to a faerie garden.
Where the heck does moss grow in parking lots? I would do the same if I saw it...and didn't live an apartment
Probably somewhere along the west coast of North America, tons of moss grows just about everywhere there. I'm more curious about how they got it to survive so well. Moss rarely does well outside of where it's grown initially. From our experience, only around 10-20% of it actually survives when replanted. However, if you really want a moss garden, it can often do well in a jar. Look up "jar moss garden" or "moss terrarium", and there's tons of guides out there.
Load More Replies...The mod explained that the popularity of the online community all comes down to how wholesome the members are. The huge following, according to them, is due to the “good nature of the gardening community that makes people sub and stick around."
"We have, by choice, never been a front-page (default) subreddit, so subs here are not accidental. As mods, we've always had a tough but fair policy on user conduct—like all gardeners have to keep the weeds at bay from time to time."
Last Year, I Planted My First Roses Ever. This Is The Biggest Reward I Could Get!

A while back, Bored Panda had a good long chat about taking care of plants with Kamilė Trakytė, the co-owner of the ‘Kambarinės gėlės’ plant shop. The plant collector and business owner explained to us that the main issue that her customers face is related to overwatering. The vast majority of the time, the problem is just that—people watering their plants way too often.
“People show their love for plants with too much attention and with too much water. Without knowing the subtleties related to the care of particular plants, it’s difficult to know how little water some of them require. People show their love with water, so ironically, they kill their plants with their love,” the plant expert shared with Bored Panda.

My Most Prolific Bloomer This Year! This Orchid Has Over 96 Large Flowers And Buds And Is Still Producing More
Wow! Well done. I've never seen anyone grow Orchids with more then a few!
My bestie has brought 4 orchids back to life. (Given to her, thought dead) She now has 6 orchids that grow and bloom every year.
For the people that never can get it to bloom, an orchid is the plant you have to be 'friendly abusing'. Aka put it in a spot with a little bit too much sun. Give it a bit too much water and let it sit in desert dry soil for a few days before watering. (unless you're trying hydroponics like I'm trying to master)
Fun fact: Chinese buy orchids in the new year Chinese New Year and decorate it. Idk why, but it is a tradition
“Root rot sets in and it’s hard to save plants that it affects,” she urged people living in colder climates not to give their plants too much water.
“I recommend getting to know each plant you grow. The recommendations to water a plant X times every Y weeks are usually ineffective because they don’t take into account the unique conditions in your home,” she said.

From My Minnesota Garden — Ranunculus, Peonies, Iceland Poppies, Lilacs, Anemones, Aquilegia, Orlaya, Spirea
“So don’t spoil houseplants with too much water from the get-go. Usually, a plant tells you what it needs: if the leaves curl up, it wants water; if the plant becomes droopy and there are brown spots on the leaves, you’re giving it too much water,” plant shop owner Kamilė told Bored Panda.
“Potted plants get all of their nutrients from the soil we plant them in. They grow in a very constricted space, unlike in nature, where complex nutritional trades occur between different organisms. Every time you water a house plant, some of the nutrients get ‘rinsed out,’ and used up,” she urged people to not forget to fertilize their plants.

According to the plant expert, all-purpose fertilizers contain the three primary elements that house plants need. These are Nitrogen, Phosphorus, and Potassium.
“Each of these nutrients has a different function. You can pick different fertilizers that contain varying proportions of these minerals to obtain different results. For instance, fertilizers with more Nitrogen will make plants bear more leaves. While more Phosphorus means more blossoms. But these considerations are secondary: all-purpose diluted synthetic or organic fertilizers do the job they need to do,” she said.

Absolute Perfection
“If you’re having difficulties taking care of your plants, watching them wither can be a source of stress. Fortunately, in most cases, plants bring us joy. Especially in modern times when we find ourselves further from nature,” Kamilė shared her thoughts about how growing plants affect us. Taking care of plants at home can calm us, reduce our stress levels, and it almost works like a type of mediation that takes our minds off our problems.

Load More Replies...My late grandma loved these. She had around five beautiful purple ones in her garden and was a great gardener. Then she got cancer and was fading away... At a point when she got dementia on top of it at only 75 years, my whole family took care off her. One day I spent some time with her and wanted to make conversation despite her dementia and showed her the gardening magazine she always used to read. The issue was covering Azaleas. She seemed to be sad about and told me that she always wanted to have a garden with azaleas to play with her grandchildren in, but unfortunately life would not give her any of it. I was the youngest of her 8 grandchildren. Dementia is hard. But ai really loved this woman to the moon and back. Miss you Oma Sigrid.
Here in North Carolina they are sold every spring in Lowes Hardware and most shrub nurseries.

I No Longer Have Sunflowers...
My Dad (Tata) planted a walnut. Took 7 years to get his first nut from the tree. Time passed and each year, more walnuts. One year, he came home (had not netted it yet for that year) to find the buggers had taken EVERY walnut, nibbled only slightly on each one and dropped them all to the ground. He was so angry, he chopped the tree down and got a bell (like you might see on a sailing vessel) and rang it profusely every time the cockatoos got in to his fruit trees. I chuckle just thinking about it. I still ring the bell occasionally too.
You'd be correct almost (if not all) cockatoo species live in Australia and New Zealand.

I would love to try more unknown fruits and plants, but it is not so easy to find/buy them. There are so many things that I am very curious about or have only tried once. I remember eating cinnamon flavored basil once, it was really the most delicious thing I've ever tasted, but I never found it in any store again.
Try finding edible plants from your local area that just don't transport well (and thus aren't commercially viable). In North America, Pawpaw (Asimina triloba) and Thimbleberry (Rubus parviflorus) can be grown at home, but not commercially.
