I am Finnish. And I have never heard of this. We do have homelessness and our mental health support system is flawed.

I'm Finnish too and have never seen a homeless person who actually sleeps in the streets. The homelessness here is more like being temporarily without a home/adress and sleeping in friends couches. (And yes, I live in one of the bigger cities and have visited the capital many times). Our mental system is flawed, that's true, but I shouldn't complain in that either because I was diagnosed while I was a pre-teen and mental support for underage is free and quite good. Mental support for adults is a bit harder to get and more expensive, but compared to many other places it's still decent.

It's not fair of them to use sobriety in this statistic (so clearly *Not* a direct quote from Finland). Alcohol/Substance addiction does not account for the majority of homelessness. Finland has better care for their citizens than many countries. Just take the pandemic for instance, soooooo many people homeless because they lost their jobs completely, or just for too long in the USA. Many people here are 1 bad month away from homelessness at any given time. It's quite the pandemic no one wants to talk about.

This is what we could’ve done when Reagan closed down the mental health facilities back in the eighties, which is when the homeless population skyrocketed. The key to it, though, is to never cut the funding for the program, which is what politicians love to do. They see it finally working, and figure the problem is fixed and we don’t need to fund it anymore—-and that’s when it only gets worse. It has to be a forever project, until we can come up with an effective and safe alternative.

It’s a falsehood that this “wouldn’t work” in countries with large cities like the US— it’s been studied. Look up housing first on PubMed, it’s been tested in LA, SanDiego, King County (Seattle) …https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC8513528/#R7

In the USA, the main problem with getting homeless people the help they need there are two main issues. The first is that most Americans think all homeless people are just d**g addicts or mentally ill and can't fit into society, or they are there by choice. So no one wants to spend any money of them. The second, is that we need to address the housing issue in America, and no politician will ever take on property owners to regulate the housing industry. It's just not in their interests. The more value property has, the more tax revenue they generate. The homeless issue in the USA is only getting worse. Right now, roughly 53% of homeless people in the USA have jobs, and that number is only increasing due to stagnant wages and ever-increasing housing costs.

Politicians are properly owners as well. It's really of how the 99% marginalize the 1%. It's unfortunate buts the mindset of modern day capitalism. I'm not advocating socialism or communism. But dang, we need to learn about if our politicians are receiving money from corporations and interest groups that don't align with your values. Values may change over time and I believe we can do better at electing leaders who better represent us in action not fancy speeches. Be a more educated voter at votesmart.org. pass the word around brother !

According to the last updates (this happens in 2013, last update news article was 2020), this whole ordeal not only helped him become not homeless anymore, but he also found a job and then reconnected with his long lost family who had been searching for him. However, with age, it seems that we ask fewer questions and start to be more content with the way things are. Whereas, children, on average, produce around 100 inquiries a day. “However, by the time they are ten to 11 years of age, they’ve pretty much stopped asking,” noted Robert Stokoe, director of the Jumeirah English-Speaking Schools in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

I actually went there back in fall 2012. I was traveling for a new employer and they put me in a 'hotel' on Staten Island, even though I was working in Brooklyn (didn't want to pay Brooklyn $$). The hotel desk told me to go get some good food and I'll feel better, sending me there (walking distance). So about 18 courses later, and Nonnas checking to make sure I was delighted with the food and wine....they were right, I felt much better.

Her Wikipedia page is of interest. Apparently it is unclear whether she was born into slavery or not. Also, she chose to do good with her wealth, so much so that she became known as "a one woman social agency." There's an American hero they didn't bother teaching us about.

There was an English comedy based on this sort of idea, "Ladies Who Do" (1963). Cleaning ladies examined the wastebaskets in stockbrokers' offices to put together hot stock tips.

One of many examples: When the Romans left Britannia, the locals kept living in their simple huts and didn't move into the advanced and comfortable Roman houses. Why? Because their leaders decided it was "foreign" and therefore could not be good.

The curiosity of a child is often encouraged and led by their caregiver. If they feel safe in their environment, they are more likely to explore new surroundings. In fact, parents are the ones responsible for instilling growth or a fixed mindset in their children. Something that encourages the former is using phrases such as “Let’s find out,” “I wonder,” and “What if?”

I was going to saying something about the disabled but then I read the last part. Fair enough. 20 squats sounds easy until you realize how out of shape you are. I say, if you can do them, great. If you'd rather just pay the fair, I'm sure it's just as reasonable. I wonder if form is judged, too.

If you are on freeway and 1 lane is closed and there are indicators to move over you should move over as soon as possible instead of waiting until the last moment and creating a bottle neck. The traffic would flow much better.

And this is just a sneak peek into what awaits them in the future. One study found that the first signs of cognitive decline began around the ripe age of 24, as we start to rely more on our experiences than our intelligence.

However, the good news was that curiosity levels remain intact and might actually increase, especially concerning topics we might have no interest in as children. With time, history museums have become a beloved attraction among adults even though they wouldn't be caught walking into it as a kid.

This interesting dichotomy might be the fault of the unstable environment many adults live in. Becky Thomas, an author and executive coach working with generational issues in the workplace, explained, “The safety and security an individual feels about their surroundings is clearly a factor regarding curiosity more than a person’s age. But consider that Millennials grew up in a time with very low trust, due to the financial crisis, the events of 9/11, parents losing their jobs, etc.

So, because they have low trust, they’re apt to question things at a higher rate than a Gen Xer or baby boomer would at their age. Earlier generations grew up in a very ‘safe’ era and typically trusted leadership, so there wasn’t the questioning and curiosity in the same way there is now."

3000 to 4000 metres. So someone took metric and converted it imperial, rounded it a bit and regurgitaed it as a fact, rather than the octopi being very fussy about what depth the live at!

Overall, it seems that curiosity isn't dependent on our age but rather on our environment and how demanding and unstable it is. If you feel like you could use more encouragement to awaken your desire to discover something new, neuroscientist and author Emma Louise Louth recommends allocating some time every week to focus on learning.

Just random facts....it was a manuscript written by da Vinci but the name Leicester is named for the Earl of Leicester who purchased it originally (or at least as close to originally. It was owned by Armand Hammer, the great grandfather of the infamous Armie Hammer. It remains today the most expensive manuscript ever sold when Bill Gates purchased it. Several websites offer free PDF downloads. It isn't a linear narrative but almost a journal of da Vinci's ideas regarding fossils, platectonics and the moon. If these things intrigue you, the Codes Gigas and Voynich manuscript are also fascinating rabbit holes

thank you I came here to give more info on it and to tell people its free online and it wasnt just offered as backgrounds and screensavers on CDs, it was uploaded to the internet for people to access for free. He publicly talked about that being his goal when he bought it, giving access to everyone not just seeing it in a museum. Not many people that buy historic items think of the public knowledge, and yes it is in a museum and not in a private collection like most multi-million dollar artifacts. so much history we have no access to because of rich asshats.

Every pound matters when you're battling the tyranny of the rocket equation! Though the gains were likely minimal at best given the weight-to-payload ratio. Their payload limit on the shuttle was about 65,000 pounds. The launch weight was 4,400,000 pounds. A 1.5% rate sounds terrible, but that's one of the better payload ratios for the size of the craft...

My favourite gemstone. For the rarity, they are surprisingly not as expensive as you'd think. In Canada, just looking it up online, a Tanzanite ring can go for $100-$800 Cdn per carat. To tell if a Tanzanite is real, look at the reflective quality. They should not be dull in shine, sparkle and colour. It is possible Tanzanite could be depleted in the mines in a couple decades, sadly.

Monsters? The only monster that has ever lived on this planet are humans. Name one other animal that mindlessly destroys its habitat, kills for pleasure, or does any of the heinous things humans have done. We're the monsters.

It's kind of like the concept of bullet trains. As the part of the wheel that is in contact with the rail decreases in size, its top speed increases because there is less friction. As the number of toes decreases, it results in less surface area contact with the ground and therefore less friction (= more speed). Think horses...their toes have basically fused into one point of contact with the ground, and their hoof shape makes them even faster. Hope that was clear enough.

Trans = to the other side, lux = light. A transluscent material lets light through and scatters it. Don't white objects reflect light in a non-selective, diffuse manner?

That is incorrect, there are between 23,000 and 24,000 registered restaurants in NYC at any given point, that is 63 years approximately not 54. But also NYC defines a restaurant as any commercial establishment that serves cooked food on site and has a permanent address (so a lot of bodegas with a griddle for making chopped cheese are considered as such). In this, there are 2 categories of Wait Service and non-wait service, so if you go by just wait service the number is lower, if you include all food trucks and food carts, NYC has about 27,000 places to eat food. If you serve alcohol you get divided into 2 categories, the Tavern and the bar license Restaurant, depending on the types and volume of food served.

Gardiners Island, 5 sq miles, the Gardiner family has owned it since 1639 when they purchased it from the Montauk tribe (the tribe the town of Montauk Point is named after), whom the family still has a good relationship with, and the current owner in the family, Alexandra Creel Goelet, has been helping them in their fight for tribal recognition by NY State, a bill that was vetoed by Governor Hochul in 2022, and 4 times by Governor Cuomo. The family is also helping to try and get the tribe federal recognition as well. The current owner is Alexandra Creel Goelet, whose mother was a Gardiner and she inherited from her uncle (she is the first person not named Gardiner to own it, but she is of the family). Very fascinating story of the Island and the family and their relation with the Montauk tribe.

Excellent write-up. As a local, I'd simply make the teensy-tiny tweak that "Montauk Point" is the geological feature, the Easternmost tip of Long Island; the hamlet is called "Montauk" and what New Yorkers define as a "town," that being a county subdivision, is called "Easthampton."

Interesting shot in that it shows none of Long Island, cropped perfectly. Long Island is shaped like a big crocodile (well, with a severe underbite). Gardiner's Island is like the food being tossed into it's mouth. Shelter Island is way deep in its mouth.

Amazing. Iceland has a lot of this, too. Much more sensible than adding water to the system, just add heat.

Looked it up. "BETHESDA, Md. (KABC) -- Police say there was so much alcohol being consumed at a college fraternity party in Maryland the air inside the house registered a .01 on a Breathalyzer. Officers broke up the party at a house in Bethesda last month. They say eight people locked themselves in a bathroom while another person jumped out of a second story window in an effort to avoid officers." https://abc7.com/us--world-fraternity-alcohol-breathalyzer/2804398/

like pottage or pot-au-feu , then. It used to be a common thing in medieval europe, one such "perpetual stew" in France was said to have been in continuation from the 15th century right up until WW2, when due to the war and german occupation, there was a shortage of ingredients to keep the stew going. Anyway, I believe the restaurant in Bangkok is " Wattana Panich" but if you make it to Japan there is a restaurant there in Asakusa named Otafuku that has served the same perpetual oden broth since the 1940s.

This is a British stock picture, they planned to build "the first electric road" back in 2015, nothing happened to this day. Other countries, Sweden among them, have been "planning" the same for the last 10 years. Apparently in Sweden at least they managed to build a 2 km long test road so far.

Horrible idea. Think of all the people who are victims of domestic abuse, who are forced to stay married, because they know that being placed in a room together AFTER your spouse has found out you want a divorce, means you will end up getting murdered. And all the people with possessive but not yet physically abusive partners, they know that being in a room together for 2 weeks after saying you want a divorce, means you might get beaten/r*ped for 2 weeks. And it will probably also discourage other people from getting a divorce, meaning they will stay in a bad or dead relationship, whereas they could both be getting a new life and find real happiness with other people. Staying married shouldn't be the goal, being happy should be the goal. Staying married for decades isn't necessarily a good thing, quality is more important than quantity.

A Dutch politician, who thinks vaccinations are nonsense, plans to create an own world for his followers. Own cities with own schools, supermarkets, hospitals, churches, own holiday resorts etc. If they stay amongst them, they may do as they like - everybody is free to have an opinion of their own. The problem is, that they refuse to respect other opinions, and would willingly infect people who would want a vaccination but cannot due to actual, proven health risks of very high percentage. But percentages are a concept which is difficult to grasp for this politician and his followers.

This is one of my soap boxes. 600,000+ people die every year from malaria, a preventable and treatable illness.

It's not easily preventable though. Yet. Most plans require breeding and releasing mozzies who mate but cannot then reproduce.

Natural, properly preserved honey will not expire. In fact, archeologists found honey thousands of years old in ancient Egyptian tombs, and it was still good! While most of us don't need to worry about honey that old, their discovery proves that if properly contained, real honey can last for a very, very long time.

Technically the part of the strawberry plant that you think is the fruit is actually not the fruit. The things on the outside, that people think are seeds, are actually the fruit. They're call achenes. The seeds are inside the achenes.

Found by a quick google search: The “seeds" you see on the outside of a strawberry are actually the plant's ovaries and are called "achenes." Each “seed" is technically a separate fruit that has a seed inside of it. Despite all this confusion about strawberry seeds, most strawberries are not actually grown from seeds!

It'd get very uncomfortable very fast if you did that. First you would be very cold. Then you would be very warm. Then you would be very on fire. Then you'd stop being alive. A few minutes later you'd stop being a coherent mass. Your ashes would probably vaporize long before they reached the core itself.

Let say the hole goes through all the way to the other side of the earth and it is completely sealed (vacuum - no air friction). If you drop a stone, due to physics, the stone will continue travel all the way to the other side. (Provided the stone somehow can survive the journey undamaged). It will then oscillate back and forth continously - just like a pendulum. The best thing is; this hole, while it has to be straight, does not need to go through to the center of the earth at all. This pendulum effect can still happen. For example, a straight hole from London to Tokyo does not go to even to 1/3 of the depth to the core. Yet, the stone will still 'fall' to Tokyo in 19×2 = 38 minutes and oscillates back and forth between these two cities. This opens up the possibility for people to travel using this technique. Well, if we have the technology, that is.

ChatGPT calculated the final speed at the centre of the Earth, considering air resistance and the varying air density, and it is approximately 0.1 m/s.

And your speed at the centre is: 11180 m/s = 40248 km/h only if there is a vacuum.

I have a question. I do not mean any disrespect to the people who obviously calculated a lot of things to know this but why do we know this? And what is the use of the knowing this info?

When there is a hole to fall in there is the chance to hit its sides every once in a while. Over 6k kilometers provide plenty of time to chafe you into tiny bits, meanwhile each hit should slow down your fall a little.

If we went via the earths core it would take around 45 minutes to get anywhere in the world , from the other side of the world to your next door neighbours

Then to really blow your mind is reading that peaches, plums and cherries are also drupes, along with walnuts and almonds.

They are nuts, the word nut is in the name. The lingusitics are very obvious. Then some botanists came along and decided to try to redefine the word "berry", and "nut", and "fruit". Well they can fe ck off. I know what a nut is, and no botanist can tell me otherwise.

Eh...you may want to consider Saudi Arabia higher than that. I had accepted a job there to work on Neom, and right before my paperwork came through, they beheaded a woman for tweeting dissatisfaction with the kingdom. So I passed.

These poor cats also inherited the not so cute genetic traits like arthritis & degenerative disc disease. They live short lives in pain just because some people like the way they look. I'm seeing fewer of these cats lately, I'm so hoping this breed will die out soon. BTW, I LOVE cats. Mine is purring on my lap as I write this. It's because I love them that I want this breed to disappear.

If nature has an "oopsie", don't take it as suggestion. The strange thing is that with an animal with that condition, lots of people scream "cutiiiieeee, I want one!". But if a human is involved, they are less keen.
