This is normal behavior in many species, not just cats.

It might even be a human behaviour too. Many start yawning when they are uncomfortable.

I presume it comes from the same behaviour as lions and it's actually a way for them to show the size of their teeth, which is a way of displaying dominance without the actual fighting. Or sometimes, they're just tired.

Lifelong vegetarian (not vegan) and my cats are given 100% carnivore diets. I'm not them, they're not me. You don't feed roast beef to a horse, so don't feed quinoa to a cat.

Definitely. Super important to do thorough research on your pets diet before getting one. Like with rabbits, feeding them only carrots and lettuce could actually kill your rabbit. Especially carrots, they're very high in sugar.

I have seen some vegans try to do this, but never in real life, just those psycho influencer vegans online. I also know of a few vegans that don't own cats specifically because they know that cats need meat so they have pets with diets they are comfortable with. Think the majority of vegans aren't trying to force cats onto vegan diets (hope not at least) but we only notice those who do try.

Then why do vets keep reiterating that I stop feeding my cats holistic high protein food, and instead put my cat on grain-filled Hills Science food? Oh, wait, it's because they're getting kickbacks from the Hills company for pushing that garbage on their clients.

We managed to get in touch with Rachel Wolfe, Figgy and Juliet’s human and founder of the account. She was kind enough to talk about her adorable furballs and why people always want to learn more about their beloved pets. "We joined TikTok in the early days of the pandemic to pass the time," she told Bored Panda

While today the account has collected more than 5M likes, Rachel knew almost nothing about the platform once she started. "I was under the assumption that the app was mostly dancing and lip-syncing videos, and thought that a cat being on the app was a completely novel idea."

The creator explained that Figgy often stands up on his back feet while playing, so her "original vision for his page was to use those clips to make it appear as if he was dancing". She quickly found out that "'Cat TikTok' not only existed but was one of the larger niche groups on the platform."

But whenever she is around me she stares at me, no blinking, even if I blink at her. Only recently has she started to sleep on me (only if my legs are covered by a blanked) and fall asleep next to the male. It's been 2.5 yrs and I hope she will finally see no one is gonna hurt her.

Strangely enough cats can be pissed if you are too early. It's the principle of the thing that you didn't keep the time. (If they have learned to expect something a certain time that is) Being early still isn't the "right time".

One is a master where if he doesn't get his way, he'll walk to another room and howl like he's the last unloved unwanted cat left at the animal shelter and he's scheduled for euthanasia tomorrow. It's the most haunting, gut wrenching sound, even worse than if I hear a baby crying. Wee shi* knows that will get me up and come running because i need to console that pathetic sound. I have a feral cat named Chick Pea. She lived in my garage for more than a decade, and even though her brother and mother became friendly, she never allowed human contact. Suddenly, she decided to move into the house. I am not allowed to touch her or get too close, in fact, she doesn't like eye contact, but for reasons I don't understand, she gets up several times a day and YOWLS. She walks around the house yelling, but of course, I can't comfort her in any way. I suspect she's becoming senile, but since I can't touch her, there is no way to figure that out. She is getting so loud that people outside my house can hear her with all the windows closed and the AC on.

If she doesn't do this for attention I would be worried. She might be in pain or feel bullied by another cat, or generally have anxiety. One of mine is a 14 year old traumatized ex-feral cat. She suddenly started to yowl for no reason AND would forget to use the litter box. After months of hell, it turned out she was not senile, but had Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). Now she has her own diet and is quiet and happy again.

Rachel was eager to tell us more about her beloved pets. "Figgy (aka The Figster, Mr. Fig, and Figs) is an almost-5-year-old domestic shorthair—although his cat DNA test results show he is most genetically similar to the Maine Coon." She found him a few days after graduating college "as a teeny tiny kitten stranded in the rain. He has been living the spoiled cat life ever since."

"His eyes add so much emotion to his face and he seems to always have the perfect expression in any scenario," the creator continued. "He often looks cranky and a bit intimidating, but he is such a sweet cat and loves to make friends with everyone he meets."

Exactly four years ago, Rachel adopted a second cat and called her Juliet. "She is about the same age as Figgy and is tiny, tailless, and extra floofy. Figgy has grown to love her very much, although he would never admit it if he could talk," she jokingly added.

A destruction should be a group of tuxedo cats. They are natural chaos bombs. And a group of kittens is a caboodle. You cannot change my mind on this.

Called a "Destruction" for solid good reasons. I love kitties, but when they are allowed to roam free outdoors, they literally decimate the local faunal populations of entire cities and islands. The plants follow, because the bugs, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and small mammals, were all a part of the ecosystem that supported them.

The depicted cat was the old stationmaster "Tama" (her name is on the collar, too), but has since passed at the age of 16 in 2015. Since then "Nitama" (Second Tama) took over Tama's duties. There are also Sun-tama-tama, and Yontama.

Humans had this too. It’s rudimentary now. There’s debate as to whether it’s functional at all after birth. It could be. Receptors for pheromones (with animals those are in the veromonasal organ)might be located somewhere else for humans.

I'd have put my money on their hearing the running water, so being able to find it (in the wild) more readily. And, from what I learned growing up, hunting, most animals prefer flowing water ----- rarely see animal tracks by a pond if there's a creek sort of thing. Downside: running water masks sound of approaching predators. Upside: less contamination, but also fewer *insects*. Mosquitoes, etc. So was I taught. And here endeth the lesson and all that.

All 3 of my cats took to the water fountain immediately, they give me grumpy look and howls when i put a bowl of water down when the water fountain's being cleaned. I doubt your cats are incredibly thirsty, more likely just habit with them. If the cat was really thirsty he'd drink from the water fountain, your drinking glass, the toilet, hell he'd lick the condensation off the windows. Sounds like they're being fantastically picky, so you know they're true cats, lol.

I wonder how they came up with this idea? I mean, I end up walking a minimum of 30 minutes a day, often more, because I don't have a yard & need to walk/exercise my dogs. It would seem dog owners generally get more exercise - even dog owners with yards like to take them hiking or to the park, etc.

Indeed! The Journal of Physical Activity & Health found that dog owners are more likely to reach their fitness goals than those without canine companions. Wonder if this is referencing this study "A study by University of Minnesota scientists reported in 2008 that cat owners have 30% less risk of dying from heart attack or than those without cats. Dogs had less protective effect, but there may not have been enough dog owners in the study to draw firm conclusions." Another study said "Cat people are more likely to be sad, lonely, and have fewer friends than dog people" and another "Loneliness increases the risk for early death by 45 percent and the chance of developing dementia in later life by 64 percent." How do all these studies cross over each other? Stats!! Can read a lot of things into them. Wonder how robust a lot of the research was as well.

Yeah. But cat people divert from a stressed body and mind quicker and more often, because of their cats. There are a few aspects to health. So a cat that you need to walk would be best. There's this instagram person with three cats in Finland and two of them go out side and run and jump all the time and they make pictures, do you know it? brrr too cold for me. And one of the 3 cats.

Feral, unspayed cats can have litters of 3 - 7 kittens every 4 months. Those kittens have kittens. Their kittens have kittens, and so on. Spaying and neutering halts this process and prevents THOUSANDS of kittens.

Our County shelter does the ear snip to identify Tag& Release after spaying. If they come from a Cat Community, they are returned vs going up for adoption & most likely being euthanized to overcrowding

There are so many unneutered cats in my area. I've been fostering one of the more prolific queens and her kitten (only one to survive). Mama is now spayed and the little one soon. But it looks like my first foster experience is a fail. The cats outnumber us now.

Then force your government to up its affordable Neuter & Spaying programs, as well as TNR (Trap, Neuter, Release) programs. Most people in America don't bother to spay/neuter because it can be $350 per cat. If the government subsidized vets doing affordable spayings/neuterings, we wouldn't have as bad of a problem. Hard to put the blame on pet owners when affording proper treatment is akin to paying the exacerbated costs of a human child.

Maybe do the same for humans and make healthcare affordable for them too while you're at it? Just saying... The forces that profit from the commercialization of healthcare for humans and lobby against public healthcare certainly tilt the scale against affordable care for pets too. Most medical supplies and medication are produced by the same corporations that lobby against affordable healthcare.

Correction - THOUSANDS of FERAL kittens. My sweet girl was a stray who stuck around after a catch-spay-release, so I adopted her because she was okay around humans. I love her to pieces. She was also pregnant with 4 kittens, which were terminated, but that's 4 less stray cats, as much as it pains me.

While on topic, feral and stray are two different terms. A stray cat, one that is somewhat easily approachable, will become feral (wild) without human intervention.

"We always joke about how we basically have wild animals living in our house: so many of the things indoor cats do mimic the hunting or survival instincts they would be using out in the wild," the creator said. "It is fun to watch them stalk a mousey toy or knead their bed before laying down, knowing they would be doing very similar things if they were out on their own."

Even though our felines amuse and confuse us, it’s all part of their charm. So if you’re always eager to learn the lesser-known facts about the little lion in your living room, make sure to give the account a follow.

This is inaccurate. Cats only sleep 2-3 hours a day. The rest of the inactive time is spend in a state with no human analog. They are resting, seemingly inert, but are completely alert and can burst into action instantly, with none of the momentary disorientation associated with waking from sleep. In studying animal behavior, anthropomorphism is treacherous and guaranteed to lead to false conclusions.

Just leftover from the wild. Most wildcats sleep all day and hunt at night. They're not always in a deep sleep. They have many hours where they just doze lightly (catnap) and if you make a sound, their eyes will pop right open. They're alert for danger, as in the wild.

My cat, for some reason, appears to be in love with his left rear paw. If you get him to "melt," meaning that he just flops, purring to the floor, he will hold his left hind paw in both of his front paws, and rub his face against it, and even lick it. I have never seen him do this with any of his other paws. He looks, for all the world, like he is making out with his own foot.

Cats do not like their water being located near their food. In the wild, cats do not drink water near their food (dead animals) because it could be contaminated. This instinct is present in house cats.

One day I didn't do it in the correct order and mistakenly put her water dish down in the WRONG PLACE on her placemat. 😾 "My food dish is on the LEFT. The water dish sits 6 inches to the RIGHT of it! Cats actively choose to ignore us sometimes. Studies suggest that cats often hear us call for them but decide to ignore us. They believe it is because they were not bred to listen to humans, like dogs.

Tw: death I think my neighbors cat killed my rabbit (I didn't see my rabbit die so I can't be 100% sure but I'm assuming a wild animal would have at least tried to eat it instead of leaving it with minimal wounds dead in it's pen). I've since reconciled but the cats still avoid me after years of me chasing them out of our yard to protect my rabbit.

Yes, keep an animal who is still 90% wild and keep it caged up within 4 walls so it never knows what it is to play in the grass and enjoy the outdoors. I'll assume you keep your kids the same way so they don't get into trouble?

Weirdly, humans are not number one on the list. Cats are. Yet we're racking up species by the hundreds. Hmm.... And cats didn't get to the Americas or "Down Under" without humans... Hmm... Yep, we're the worst. some estimates are that humans have, just since 1500, racked up 600-plus species on the "made extinct" list!

'Did You Know': 30 Facts About Cats That You Might Not Have Heard Of Cats often carry the parasite Toxoplasma gondii, which causes rats to be attracted to cats. T. gondii makes its way to the rodent’s brain, and stops the natural fear response to cats. They seek them out, leading to their death and the cats' meal.

Before you go killing cats (and some do based on this) please note that humans generally get this from *two* sources: cat feces *and/or* raw meat. (Inf act, raw meat is how cats get it, as a rule.) The oocysts become transmissible around 24 hours after the fecal matter is deposited. Just waer gloves and a dust mask when cleaning a cat's litterbox, which most people (hopefully?) do anyway ---- and wash your hands to the elbows after doing so. Also, clean the cat box twice a day. T gondii can be damaging to human fetuses, hence the extra caution of no new cats during pregnancy (lest they carry it into the home) and the no-cat-litter-cleaning rule during pregnancy. Aslo, glove and dust-mask during gardening, just in general precaution, let alone against T gondii left by a stray cat's feces. Peace out from the Hygiene Police.

We had a feral cat dropped at our barn. She kept having litters of sickly mean kittens and we were struggling to home them, and she was impossible to catch. I finally get her one day, and am driving to get her fixed and somehow she unlatched the crate over a mile from the house. She got out of the car and ran off. Plastic, dirty dishes and kibble dust make it worse. I've had best results from porcelain or stoneware dishes, cleaned for each meal. Swab down chins daily.

The reason some cats develop acne is the plastic of their food or water bowl. My cats had it and we solved it by replacing the bowls with metal glass or ceramic ones

Or more accurately "an animal welfare body or association was looked for in order to leave the inheritance along with the task of looking after the cat Tommaso". I've worked for animal welfare organisations and when this happens (more often than you'd think) they normally have the money to look after the pet and when the pet dies they get to keep what remains to carry on their work for other animals. Though once a charity was left money but only if they PUT THE PET DOWN. A legal battle followed to save, successfully, the animal's life.

Not Tommaso’s fault but he’s one cat with at most 12 years to live on average, with uncomplicated needs. Then think about how many deprived children, in children’s homes, or facing hunger or abuse, that such a huge sum could have helped and you see how obscene this really is.

The money most likely ended up with a welfare organisation who would then look after the cat and get the remainder. Animals should have just as much of a right to a pain free, decent existence as any other creature on this planet - including one of the most harmful. Humans.

My cat Milo almost died since he had bladder crystals that couldn't pass through his micro penis (honestly). The vet told me she had a hard time clearing it out cuz it was so tiny. I was told cats can die from this within 48 hrs of onset of symptoms (cat unable to pee/trying to pee in different locations). I was also told that girl cats don't usually have this problem since their urethras are like McDonald's milk shake straws, whereas boy cars are like coffee stirrers. After i quit feeding him the Iams dry food (he ate canned at night), and fed the better Instinct brand ( got a free bag from a friend and now feed him this off Amazon instead of the prescription dry food he was on for a few years after his 5 day hospital stay) Milo has not had any crystal issues at all :-) Feeding your cat better quality dry food (they should still get canned for moisture too) is a lot cheaper than that $1500+ hospital bill

I recently picked up the cheapest fish i could find to boil as treats for them, something called Swai, they're going more bananas for that than even the mackerel! Majority of fish cat food has tuna, so i'm wondering if not only does constantly feeding them tuna make them tuna junkies, but it could actually put them OFF tuna and make them prefer other fish?

Tabby with the white spot gene. Calico colors are blocks of black, orange, and sometimes white. They can have lighter coloring if they have the dilute gene. Calicos can have tabby markings in one or both colors. Growing up we had an orange and black calico tabby, a tri calico tabby, and a dilute tri with blue and peach.

Please don't use laser pens with your cats, it can cause irreversible psychological damage, especially in dogs but it has happened with cats too, many times. They have no physical thing to catch, it can drive them loopy and they won't ever stop obsessing about it.

The problem is that human find these mutations appealing so they purposely breed animals with the same mutation. The Scottish Fold is a mutation cause by lack of cartlidge (the folded over floppy ears) the problem is the body consists of a lot of cartlidge so these poor animals are being bred with compromised cartlidge. This means they are sickly and in constant pain from a lack of cartlidge

Feral cats and stray cats are not the same. A stray cat is a cat that was a pet at one point in his life; a feral cat is born and raised in the wild. Feral cats see humans as a large animal/predator rather than a companion. They (generally) avoid human contact.

Former housemate had a feral cat who domesticated himself after we had him TNRed. He was probably about 5, and we’d named him A$$hole because it was accurate. He would accept food we left out for him though. One day housemate snuck up on him while he was eating and gave him a little ear scritchin’. Immediately his head popped up and he looked at her with wide eyes like “This is love? This is so nice?? Want more forever???” He was obsessed with her after that, and became so sweet and cuddly. He even adopted and cared for an orphaned kitten litter he found, and brought them to his human for help when he realized he couldn’t care for them on his own. Complete 180. Obviously we had to change his name once he decided he wanted more of this amazing “love” thing.

My grandpa had a feral cat give birth to her kittens under his house, he fed them and built them a heated cat house. He managed to trap them once, he took them to the vet to get them spayed/neutered and vaccinated. The cats grew up, and 3 of them stuck around and like to relax in their yard. The mother still lives in the little cat house 6 years later! They loved my grandpa, and are pretty chill around my grandma. Won’t let her pet them though, only grandpa could haha

Only baby cows can drink cow milk. There's a few humans too, but they are the exception. Almost no animal can drink milk beyond their baby years.

Cow's milk is designed for baby cows. Getting humans to drink it is the weirdest thing. If somebody offered you pig's milk, how would you feel? What about horse milk? What about cat milk? But everyone's fine just gulping down cow's milk. What's the difference?

People from central asia routinely drink horse milk and goat milk is popular too in many parts of the world and sheeps milk is used in cheese making. Cats just don't produce the volume a cow does.

I’ve seen the actual clip, the cats aren’t boxing so much as play fighting taking half-hearted bops at each other while trying to wrestle each other into place for grooming. It was actually really cute and the cats seemed totally fine (though perhaps a bit confused in the way animals usually get when you put them in booties.)

Everyone thinks black panthers, black wolves, and black horses are beautiful and the black dogs and black house cats are just as cool looking to me.

And female kitties prefer it more than male kitties do. All my male cats, past & present, show little interest in fresh catnip, whereas the female kitties do, and always have, enjoyed it immensely. If buying dried catnip be sure to read the labels, pure catnip is what you'll be looking for. Lately they've added fillers, not good for kitties.

It's because we are omnivores, herbivores need that side-to-side chewing motion to grind up their food. Carnivores tear off bits of meat and swallow them whole. Our jaws and teeth are in between those of herbivores and carnivores.

I've switched to using corn-based clumping litter. It's good for them to dig in and clumps beautifully for scoopin out. It's less dusty and heavy than clay litter. Theorectically, you can flush it down the toilet, but it's better to put it in the bin or compost.

Not mine, they're absolute love-whores who are glued to my side. One curls up on my belly, shunting my laptop out of the way with his foot and making cookie dough out of my belly rolls, second cat crawls up on back of couch then lays across the back of my neck/shoulders like a scarf nibbling my earlobes, third cat shuffles right up against the side of my leg. I have to peel them off me, no matter which room i go to they follow (i haven't peed alone in years), and they howl grumpily until mom resumes the position and they can all pile on. I've given dedicated rubs and cuddling for 45mins straight, i put them down, they jump right back up for more. I've never seen such affectionate cats. Don't worry they're not bored, they get access to a huge backyard and neighborhood, toys, big house to run around in while i'm at work, 3 of them to keep each other company, my roommate is there all day long - i have no explanation for why they need so much affection. I may have loved them too much.
