One of my secret pleasures (and feel free to chime in if you’re a geek like me) is looking through various colorful guides and infographics, from what plants are edible in forests to hypothetical explanations on how best to survive the zombie Apocalypse that 2020 promised but never delivered.

The multi-million-member ‘Cool Guides’ community on Reddit is the prime place to go to for (yup, you guessed it!) cool guides. From aesthetically pleasing and very informative ones to quirky and funny ones, you’ll find a bit of everything to keep those noggins of yours learning and yearning for more, dear Pandas.

Bored Panda had a lovely chat with redditor Dadschool, who founded the r/coolguides subreddit way back in 2014 and is still its head moderator to this very day. Having started the sub with no real expectations of forming a community around it, he filled a niche on Reddit that had been empty. "I had a bit of a compulsive habit of saving every guide I came across on Reddit with the idea that I'd somehow reference it when I needed it later. There weren't really any subs for general guides so I made one and uploaded all my guides at once. I think a lot of people have a similar affection for bitesize trivia and hoarding generalist knowledge." You'll find the rest of our interview with the founder below.

Upvote your fave guides as you scroll on down, drop us a comment with your thoughts below, and go and join the r/coolguides subreddit if it’s right up your alley. But a quick note of warning before we begin: this is a community mostly for guides; infographics are in a bit of a grey area.

There's a saying in this shìthole that goes something along the lines of "telling someone who has depression to just try and get better cause life is beautiful, is the same thing as telling a person who suffers from asthma that they should just try and breathe cause there's plenty of oxygen out there"

depression feels like you're blank. all your emotions have a damper on them. you're tired but can't sleep and also sleep too much, you're hopeless, you skip meals or over eat, you never want to do anything, you're mad, and all you want is to be gone.

This is a good one, saving this to show others, beats having to explain yet again what will most likely not be understand (yet again). Explanation never beats the picture it seems. I’ve given up on explaining... too disappointing to see the stubborn judgemental doubts about “my” explanation. A picture seems more trustworthy than a longtime depressed good-for-nothing that just wants to talk her way out of doing something, like go to work “like the rest of us have too”. Sigh, like drowning in the middle of an ocean with only the mentioning of there being such a thing as land to prevent that drowning in that aweful muck the depression likes to be is so desirable I would give up something that would actually make me money, providing the care I so need and hence, make me feel like I’m worth a dime would be that desirable. Some people just don’t want to know. Maybe this helps. Also, it can be half of these and then switch to the other half and back numerous times over the years.

The founder, Dadschool, was very humble about his role in expanding the community. "I can say it is only able to be this size because moderators like @etymologynerd and @robinsparkles18 are as active as they are, and the time they take out of their day to check in," he praised his colleagues. With a leader so supportive, no wonder that the mod r/coolguides mod team stands shoulder to shoulder, come hell or high water.

"The unique thing about Reddit is that subreddits really are independent and are autonomously moderated communities. I think our subscriber ranking is something like 190 across all of Reddit and it's not like there's monetization options after you break 200 or conversations with Reddit corporate. We're the same mod team we were a few years ago, excited that we broke 100k, and checking Reddit throughout the day to make sure no one uploaded the same damn apple guide uploaded 100 times that week," the founder claimed that things are still pretty much as they've always been.

There is something called cPTSD, or "complex PTSD", which occurs in those of us whose trauma was inflicted steadily, readily, constantly, throughout childhood or over decades in adulthood. We have no pre-trauma life, so we aren't typical PTSD patients in that sense. We don't have a "normal" we miss. We freak out at what others call normal. It's real. it sucks. Abused children often grow up to develop this type of PTSD, in my experience (and my peer support PTSD group).... Let us heal. We may not fully heal ever, but since some were hurt before they could speak words? ... It's harder than most think.

Dadschool revealed that the biggest challenge that he and the other moderators face is reacting in time to remove hateful and troll guides as soon as humanly possible. However, that's not always possible because they all have day jobs; moderating is something that they do during their spare time. "We all are working professionals so it's easy for something to slip by and stay out there for way longer than it should and that's always a total bummer—a total lose/lose for the community."

A mesa is much smaller than a plateau. It's like a feature on the terrain, whereas a plateau is the terrain. Consider it like your hand is a plateau and a freckle is a mesa.

Nowadays, the founder of r/coolguides is a tad more lax about infographics than when he first founded the subreddit. These days, he's more keen to let the community decide what direction it wants to go via upvotes and engagement. He trusts the community. "I see the moderator role as more akin to a landscaper: pruning [troll] posts, removing harmful posts, and moderating for content diversity. Subscribers are much better judges of content quality and validity than moderators and I think it's important to trust them in that role." He added (and this is a feeling that I completely agree with): "I will admit, however, that the majority of guides I enjoy most myself rarely break 50/100 upvotes."

Thank you so much. Every time I introduce a story or wanna talk about something, my family (everyone who I'm trying to talk to at the moment, actually) totally disregards me and interrupts with a different topic. Happened just last night when my sister was visiting. I was about to say something that I'd come across on BP, and literally while I was speaking, my sister (who is 10 years older than me, not just a little kid trying to get attention) managed to say a few words and divert everyone's attention to her as she talked about something totally unrelated. This happens the majority of the time I try to tell even a short story or make a comment on something with them. I even confronted them of this by saying "I feel disregarded," and my mom just looked at me with an unfathomable expression, then turned and continued listening to what my sister had to say. :/

When sharing with your friend, tell them it works best if the "things" are named out loud (this aids breath control). Each "thing" can only appear on one list. EG If I see a pen but then it can't appear on the touch list. This slows the mind and focus the person on what is "out there" not on what horrible feelings are going on "within".

I see a great deal of patients (I'm a paramedic, 27 years) that are having true (and very real to them) anxiety attacks. When I used to quickly medicate them, to calm them, I use this. Depending on the person (and my mood), I change the items they need to think and consider....5 favorite foods, 4 places you want to visit, etc. With each number, I ask them a few questions based on what they name (ex. One favorite food is pizza...what kind do you like? Extra cheese? Crust?). In the (roughly) 10 years I have used Grounding, I have only had a few patients that still need medication, or need to go through them, again (changing what they fit into each number). A few patients think I'm ridiculous, I ask them to just play along...they humor me. When it is all done, I teach them how to use it. Grounding works. Try it!!

My therapist taught me something like this for my anxiety. It's called the element method. Earth is what you feel/see, water is just drink some water, fire is imagining you're in a place that makes you feel safe, and air is breathing. It's super helpful so if you have bad anxiety, try it out.

I use this on my son and some of my friends, sometimes it works for them other times it doesn't. Don't be discouraged if it doesn't work for you the first time you try it. The one I have instead of emotion, taste is listed. I've also added another rule to it: Nothing can be listed twice. You can't list a flower for both seeing and smelling kind of thing.

I was in a restaurant in Italy and some tourists were ordering a £45 piece of steak and wanted it well done. The chef refused! They wanted it back to the kitchen to have it cooked more and the chef actually came to them after they argued with the waiter and told them NO! They had to eat it as it was or order something else. lol, he was so upset!

That is just a bad chef, who just doesn't know how to make a proper well done steak and is partaking in this popular misconception to cover up with snobbery his lack of skills, or not having the right cut of meat to make a juicy well done steak. I always order well done steak. Beef is a meat that is very likely to contain harmful parasites. Also, it helps you find cooks that really know how to make a steak.

My dad can BBQ a great well done steak and it's never dry or burnt. The niqab and the burka should not be legal in our society. First because the face is the way of conveying emotions and covering it it’s dehumanising but specially for security. The other veils should be all legal for adults but not for kids since they cannot consent to them. I am heartbroken each time that I see a 8yo covered like if she needs to be hidden while her brothers run around freely.

Covering up your women shows the men in your society have a serious problem, if you are disturbed about the veow of a woman's legs or cleavage then you clearly have a problem with thinking about sex too much. But then we knew when it's OK to marry girls who are too young in these places.

All muslims are required to dress modestly. The male version is less extreme. Men will cover most of their hair. You don't see Muslim men in shorts (except sportsmen) or shirtless. Until the mid-20th century, it was common for married Christian women to cover their hair when in public. Just think of images of medieval woman in white veils, Henry VIII's wives with angular hoods or Victorian women in their bonnets. The hats gradually got smaller through the 20th century but even in the 50's, a married woman still commonly wore a hat when going out.

Exactly. We also used to cover our women as if they needed to be ashamed of themselves. But we evolved. Cultures need to grow or they get stagnant in the past. Muslim countries used to me some of the most advanced ones and not they have regressed so much that are more restrictive than in medieval times.

Empowerment isn't individual. Things that empower women, empower women as a class, not make an individual feel good. If it raises woman as a whole up and gives them power, it's empowering (voting rights, land ownership, money ownership, divorce ability, etc) if it doesn't give women as a class power but makes you feel good or maybe makes your personal life a tad easier, it's not (wearing makeup, shaving, wearing super revealing stuff or religion mandated modest clothing, etc)

You lose all my respect if you tell me “thanks for your patience”. I wasn’t patient, I had no choice but to wait, because you were late. You better own up to that and apologize!

    danielw

The first one is actually really bad advice. It's predicated on the believe that apologizing is 'weak' and therefore should be avoided. but, if you gone done f****d up, you need to admit that. if it was something out of your control, explain that. But don't presumptuously thank people for their patience- especially if it's a regular occurrence.

"When can I expect and update" sounds rude to me. I use "I just wanted to check in" all of the time. But my job is client-focused, so maybe that's why. For my coworkers I'm "following up on this."

These are just trends. When they become clichéd, the wrong ones now will start seeming cooler. "Let me know if you have questions" is almost clichéd if not already and "Hopefully that makes sense" sounds cooler already.

I was same for two years(especially back pain) no diagnosis, a lot of medicine. I am a doctor myself, I tried everything. When medicine is not enough, tried hypnosis etc... At last when I wanted to lose weight I began to eat kotogenic diet. (but a healthy one, olive oil, butter, fish, meat, lots of vegatable...not the one with bacon or sthg) Also eat one spoon black seed. Then in three weeks my pain just vanished. And if I keep low carb, no gluten, I do not have pain anymore. (For 3 years) I hope you will find a cure too. I know it is soooo hard, you even do not want to live sometimes.

Well, this is not very accurate at all. If you're unconscious then you're not feeling pain at all - and having lived with a daily 7 to 9 for more than four years, and having experienced 10 (and maybe 11) on a number of occasions, I can tell you I fervently wished for the bliss of unconsciousness. Edit - I freely admit to crying on occasions, but it wasn't ever at level 7.

What’s more, you should aim to write concisely. Plainly. Simply. Structure and break up the content to make it easier to read. Give your guide some flow and make it easy for the reader to understand what’s what.

Meanwhile, some of the things that you should avoid are incredibly technical terms in the title and headings. Also, omit useless words and info. Less. Is. More. (Unless you absolutely have to add in those extra words for whatever unavoidable reasons.)

Living in Korea and having visited Japan, it's really interesting how, while Korean temples are pretty much decorated, with details and colours (although, not as much as European Baroque, that's extreme), the temple I saw in Tokyo (near Shibuya) was minimalist in details, looked really simple. The trees at the temple related park were amazingly huge.

I have a tattoo in one of the blue spots and I can confirm that it's more of a sensation than pain. I'm also diabetic and have to do fingerprick blood tests, and from that I can tell you a needle or lancet hitting bone hurts like a ************. Go for the fleshy bits.

This is completely wrong. I have a complete leg and some areas in the inner thigh where totally painless while some areas on my forearms made me cry in pain. Some areas are obviously generally more sensitive but it's far from being a map like that.

Agree! Most of my tattoos are in the blue areas and weren't too bad. Where I disagree is the one on the inside of my upper arm wasn't bad but the one I got on the inside of my forearm might have been the most painful one I've gotten! Also the back across the edge of the shoulder blade was more than a blue level of pain.

For wimps like me (and my entire back is covered), doctors will prescribe EMLA cream. It numbs the skin and does NOT change the texture for the artist like caffeine based pain relievers do. It took 9 3 hour sessions to do my back. That's about as much as I can take at a time.

15 tattoo's in, can confirm, but I'd say the inner part of your arm is more painful than the outer part, too. But that's just me. Everyone has different pain thresholds, but I'd say this is still a good guide.

According to the mods, their online page is for “picture based reference guides for anything and everything. If it seems like something someone might print, physically post, and reference then it is a good link for this sub.”

However, this doesn’t always include infographics. The mods explain that infographics are learning tools, whereas guides are reference tools. Sometimes, the area between the two becomes blurred.

If you do end up posting what the mods deem to be an infographic, they might decide to remove it. “An infographic is more educational in layout and content, finding something specific on an infographic is not as easy because it is designed to inform through more narrative structures. If your guide is more of a visual essay than a structured table or list, then chances are that is an infographic. Sometimes infographics can masquerade as how-to guides.”

Just a thought - but if we really want, "One nation indivisible", as the original pledge of allegiance (pre-1953 McCarthyism) states, we should give state hood to Guam, PR, and DC. You see, 53 is a prime number and therefore indivisible.

ha. But (I'm no expert) they may not want to join the "statehood" because then they would have to pay US taxes and would not have their own governments. Some of the territories prefer to stay territories so that they have more control over themselves.

Essential oils only for aromatherapy, and they work lovely that way. Do not apply topically without a carrier oil and still avoid using most essential oils that way, an example is cinnamon/cinnamon oil can actually cause burns to your skin. Also, not enough research or information is available about ingesting essential oils and even the MLM brands advise not to ingest (reading the label on the essential oil bottles, don't go by what the salespeople say as it's not regulated/monitored). I just really need this caveat to the poster because there's so much misinformation available regarding essential oils.

Good infographic, but they really should use different colors, like yellow and purple, so people can divorce themselves of “red vs blue” feelings when reading this. This is going to create some knee jerk reactions from “red” people who do not want to lose to “blue” people, whereas unpoliticized colors will allow everyone to see it “from their side”.

First you decline, then be gracious. Wording is very essential and people tend to pay attention to the sentence after the "but". For example "I won't be able to make it, but thank you for considering me" vs "thank you for inviting me, but I can't come". I think the first one sounds better, even if it's essentially the same.

I use this system in my class when students happen to give a wrong answer. "That is a good answer, but I think that in this context we could do better. But thanks for your input, it's a great start. Who can elaborate or add?" And even if they give an answer that is just flat wrong (and it's not a joke), I try to wrap it in a compliment. "Mmm, I'm not sure that answer would fit here, but thank you very much for volunteering an answer. I'm pretty sure it'll help the others. Who can help?" Especially with the online teaching when interaction is necessarily limited, I think it really work to have lots of encouragement and compliments.

I would think 'That sounds like an amazing time, but I won't be able to make it' with a circle back to 'I really appreciate you inviting me' sort of sound best. Then maybe we skip the discomfort part, or pin on the 'I heard that new bar is really nice.' I think that last added statement works regardless of what the invite was for... 'I won't be able to make it to the (wedding, funeral, movies, child's birthday)... That new bar sounds amazing.'

The fact that people feel the need to explain their decisions to others is something I'll never understand. If I can't/don't want to go somewhere /do something, I just politely decline. People are not entitled to an explanation from me. Ever. And I don't ask for them, either.

I can tell you that it's because some people feel bad for turning down an invitation, so they'll give a reason as to why they have to miss it because they want the inviter to know that they aren't just saying "no" because of laziness or that they don't like them. That's why I do it anyway, and I'm trying to change that

This is something that Americans who oppose universal healthcare keep conveniently forgetting. They assume we're paying a fortune in taxes to support it. No, we pay a proportionate amount of tax according to income, but we don't pay hundreds or thousands per month in insurance, or co-pay.

This is a lot clearer but the politicians are purposely using vague, mixed language to be able to go back and say they DID say this or say that or warned about this....because they said, "we have to start being mindful and practice distancing" so that can turn into, "OK, we're going back to lock down because you people don't listen!"

When hiking, the natural tendency is to lean forward somewhat. This puts the heaviest items (and therefore the center of gravity) over your own center of gravity. If you put the heavy stuff in the bottom it will pull you backward and hiking will be more fatiguing. In the graphic, the heaviest items are directly above the hiker's hips.

This is not a good guide – it should be comparing from least sweet to most sweet. If you compare ‘most sour’ (definition of tartness in Cambridge English Dictionary) with ‘most sweet’ you aren’t comparing apples with apples.

The point is that kids might have no idea what you mean by 'be careful'. For a busy road id say 'stop! Look and listen for cars', for a hot stove id teach them to feel whether it is hot well before i let them near it unsupervised enough to have to resort to letting them burn themselves because 'its hot' was harder to think of than 'be careful'.

also - let them do all that exploration internally without your meddling. Kids are natural navigators and we futz it up by involving ourselves in their exploration processes. They don't need to be able to put it into words yet - their bodies, our bodies, are intelligent in their own way and they learn not by hearing someone else speak and question, but by doing. If the risk is scrapes and bruises - get the hell out of your kids way.

One woman ran back to her house to get a white sheet to direct traffic so none of us would be killed. (The guy was busted up, but full leathers and a good helmet protected him.)

I cycle to work at 5.30am in my hivis vest and hivis backpack cover. Strong white front light, blinking rear light plus blinking red on my helmet. Feel safe enough in the dark on roads with zero street lamps.

People who cycle in the dark without light often think like toddlers playing hide and seek (I don't see you, so you don't see me): I (cyclist) can see you (car) so you see me too

So many times I see bikers all dressed in black, no reflectors, never stopping at stop signs, no helmet. Yeah, they say you shouldn't blame victims, but in those instances, if they get hit and die, it's their own fault.

Nobody really knows yet. Scientists are hard at work, but it needs time. I think it's great that it is at least understood that the symptoms aren't the same in both sexes.

Check your levels of anxiety. Some of the symptoms can be the same. Sometimes it's chronic, and people get used to living with a high level of discomfort. Don't! Look for help! The situation, with the pandemic and the problems it's creating, is bad enough without having to put up with chronic pain. If you need to take medication for a while, it's OK. You can work on more natural ways to cope with it later. Please, look for help! Stress and chronic anxiety are killers, too. They destroy you body and your immune system.

Nobody said it did. And, for the record, i suspect that this stems from the fact not much research was done into women's heart attack deaths until relatively recently by comparison, and the male model is frankly outdated. I'm in medicine, so is my FIL, when you see one in real life, you know that NO HEART ATTACK PLAYS BY THE TEXTBOOK.

Women, If you think you are having a heart attack and your doctor is male, remind him that women have different heart attack symptoms than men(politely) by saying, "I thought that I should contact you because I know that women have different heart attack symptoms than men."

Men get these other symptoms too. But generally their heart attacks are easier to recognize, so they add the other symptoms for women. But I think it'd be best if they just had all the additional symptoms for both sides, because sometimes mens' heart attacks are also ignored because they present with the indigestion/fatigue and so forth.

Yes. I'll say it again: THESE SYMPTOMS AFFECT BOTH GENDERS. REporting and research have done more to skew the idea than anything else. I was taught, not even 30 years ago, to assume indigestion and nausea were automatically potential warning signs of heart attack. When the he** did *that* change?!?! (Rhetorical).

I didn't have much chest pain with mine, but I did have pain in both shoulders that reminded me of post-surgical gas pain. My other symptom was an overwhelming feeling that something was very wrong. Turns out, my right coronary artery was 90% blocked. Once the surgeon put the stent in, I felt perfectly fine, albeit quite tired.

The fact that you have most symptoms doesn't mean you have a heart atrack. If you had had one, you would have had serious consequences if untreated. Many different conditions have similar symptoms. That's what makes diagnosis so difficult.

Personally, I love coffee and I think it's the only thing that keeps my heart beating, but I don't feel the need to be an asshole about it. If your thing is to drink green tea with milk in it, well go for it. In the universe of things to believe in, this is a pretty daft one to go to war about.

The first one - in Czechia there is such institution, named GIBS dedicated to inspecting police incidents. Yet usefullness of this bureau is dubious. Basically idea of "independent inspector body" for anything is more of an utopia, sooner or later any such institution becomes somehow politicized or / and biased under pressure of politicians or corporate companies.

BLM isn't calling for the abolishment of police, that would be absurd. what people want is less police with dangerous weapons, less police budget (they have an absurd amount of money), and better laws. I'm grateful for police, i always feel more safe at school when the police are there, but we need to be aware that there needs to be a way of monitering them and keeping them in line.

Some are. They want to cut police funding by 50% or more and redirect the funding. I agree there needs to be better trading and all of the things listed but defunding the police is the opposite all of these things will require a budget increase.

I don't know why you are down voted. This is so true. Either they should send a trained officer or all officers should be trained to handle mental health situations and they are not! Maybe in some places but here where I am they are not and it's unsettling how they handle calls with mentally ill individuals at times.

The problem (at least part of it) is when they act and use a level of force that would be required in such an awful situation like in Boulder for something that could have easily been resolved or when the person they are in contact with is not being violent or threatening to them or anyone else.

I don't care much about formal education for regular policing - but temperament is critical. And firearms training - you should get bonus points for being able to hit extremities on the move to disable/disarm instead of kill shots - leave those to SWAT. In fact, take away guns from most police - they respond after the fact anyway 90% of the time and no gun is needed. Also - abolish qualified immunity. Every complaint is investigated and logged. So even if "nothing is found" if you have an officer with multiple complaints, something is going on. Take Derek Chavin, for example... over 20 complaints of excessive force, three or four resulting in death. He's not a cop - he's a killer.

Yes police lives matter, every life matters but what about the innocent people or the people who are not running from them and get assaulted just because some police officers have problems with power? I know most of the time that's not the case but it happens. The police are not supposed to serve as judge, jury, and executioner.

A few years ago a Reddit user proposed another possible reason in the form of a short story. In this story, an alien civilization answered the Arecibo message with "be quiet or they will hear you". Maybe alien civilizations do exist but they fear being detected by hostile ones.

My favorite theory is they are watching but will not come visit our planet until our species can act together as one for a greater purpose. So far we can't do that. There is so much hate based on color and identity and what part of the world we live in. We can't even come together to get to Mars or the Moon. It's all about which country will do it first. We can't do anything as one, and until then we will never know.

While technically correct, due to the inverse-square law those early low-power transmissions would be virtually undetectable by the time they reached another star system. In order for a radio transmission to be received by another civilization we would need to be somewhat deliberate about directing that energy to a particular place.

The one that comes to mind that may or may not apply is the Galactic Zoo theory. The thought is that Earth's incredible biodiversity is because we were seeded with creatures from all around the universe. We haven't encountered aliens because the seeders are observing but actively avoiding us.

An alternative for #6 would be to pour some of any automotive fluid which ISN'T gasoline into the bead where the tire meets the rim and light that. That technique will work even in wet conditions (be sure to let the air out of the tire first).

Trouble is, many many ignorant people have no doubts. This is part of the Dunning Kruger effect. You're more likely to have doubts when there's actually less need for you to have them; people with knowledge and experience know they have a lot to learn. Ignorant people tend to over-estimate their own capabilities.

If your actual belief system can't be distinguished from an outrageous satire of your belief system, it might not be a very good belief system.

I mean it's totally unrelated but you may enjoy this gem from the UK poet Roger McGough... I found a sock beneath my bed. "Where have you been all week?" I said. "Hiding away" the sock replied. Another day on your foot and I would have died.

A cape is a more-or-less pointy bit of cost showing outward. A bay is inward. Think about an outy versus an inny.

Common european stinging nettle, Urtica dioica, stings and leaves blisters on your skin. And can be used in all kinds of ways. The early leaves can be used in salads, mature plants in soups and stews. And fibers from the stems can be used in making threads

    A) this roughly translates to: predators have eyes on the front of their head, preys have eyes on the sides of their head. B) now visualize a dragon: eyes on the sides of its head, that suggests a dragon is prey to something even more scary :P

This is roughly true for land predators, but not for most fishes and birds (they need to see more of their surroundings, because danger or food can be in any direction).

As a prey, you can see something coming but you don't have a clue how far away it is. The feeling of "it touches me next second" is therr all the way. Like when you run up the stairs from the basement after you put off the lights 😂

... don't take this too strict. You can eat ANY onion raw, fried and cooked, but sometimes, chosing the right one is quite the opposite - cucumber salad for example requires white or yellow ones, while it remains raw all the way. Red ones may be served in tomato sauce, then being almost raw and not if the sauce is made for today and tomorrow, but only for today - they age the worst of all onions, once the paper is removed.

Save the USPS - fire DeJoy, and then open an investigation into everything he did in the role of postmaster general. In addition to trying to steal an election, his deliberate sabotage through mail slow-downs and destruction of valuable equipment caused medication delays, business issues, and more. He should be held accountable for it ALL.

DeJoy bought his position by donating to clown Donald. He got put in this position then to destroy this service so nobody can vote by mail anymore. GOP tactics to steal election, they know they cannot win fair.
