50 Times People Noticed These Instagrammers Who Heavily Photo-Edit Their Pictures And Exposed Them Online

In some ways, the endless lockdowns have been freeing. We’re starting to care less about how we look, how we dress, and whether or not we’ve got make-up on. Well… some of us, anyway. Even though we might be spending more of our time at home than ever before, there are plenty of people who are addicted to social media going overboard with photo-editing their pics before posting them on Instagram because they want to feel validated or loved. People who stumble upon the heavily altered pics in their feeds can’t help but call them out by sharing them on the r/Instagramreality subreddit that has a whopping 917k members and even their very own ‘Reptilian Overlord’ (that’s the title that the head moderator goes by).
Upvote the photos that got you to pause with how over-edited they are and let us know your opinion about why people do this in the comments. Want to feel better about using just basic filters or nothing at all on your own photos? Read on for Bored Panda's interview with the head moderator of the subreddit. We also wanted to learn more about social media addiction, how the lockdowns are affecting our online activities, and when we should start worrying about the time we spend on the net, so we reached out to the UK Addiction Treatment Group. Nuno Albuquerque, the Head of Treatment for the UK Addiction Treatment Group, told us that social media addiction is a relatively new phenomenon that everyone is still learning about every single day. I don't know if I'm at all correct on this as I couldn't be on social media due to my job and so mercifully have avoided it BUT people who have to go so, so artificially out of their way, every picture, to create a "not them" to the point of being so fake and artificial...this to me seems like a type of self-loathing, or a type of body-image dysphoria illness. I see so many beautiful people who, flaws or not, imperfections or not, just see themselves as some 'thing" to tweak, filter, rearrange. To the point of it being sad, sick and creepy. I am amazed at posts that show people's Instagram, etc., pictures and their "real" pictures. Some make you gasp, I can't see anything healthy in having to create and be addicted to manipulating "you". I'm sad for these folks.

The head moderator of the r/Instagramreality subreddit, Zaza9000, told Bored Panda that 2020 was "hard on all of us," so they try to keep the community easy to engage with and be a part of. This openness is one of the reasons why the subreddit is so popular. "Last year so many people have shared interesting stories from their personal lives and I really hope we can carry that into 2021."
According to the head moderator, there have been some shifts in how people approach editing their content. Recently, there's been more interest in video editing than photo editing, for instance. "Especially apps like Facetune2 and SNOW that allows you to edit your body and certain Instagram filters that can make your lips appear bigger and make your skin unrealistically perfect. Seeing them glitch in videos has been a really popular topic on the sub," they explained.
"For us non-influencer, regular people of course travel isn't always an option especially if it's just for a vacation away. Unfortunately, there have been a few influencers that don't care, to be blunt. Some of them feel like traveling and being on vacation is necessary and well-deserved even though people in the medical field, teachers, retail workers, etc. don't get to just jump on a jet and get away."

"A person can be addicted to anything, but they are only suffering an addiction if whatever it is they are 'using' has taken over their lives, and that they as individuals have lost the power of choice, i.e. that they cannot, regardless of how much they want to, stop 'using'. This is the effect that addiction has, it robs the individual of the ability to stop. Even if that individual is aware of the negative physical, psychological, or financial consequences, they still cannot stop. It is essential to not use the word 'addiction' flippantly; if a person is addicted, then they are in need of professional help and support," Albuquerque, the Head of Treatment for the UKAT Group, explained to Bored Panda, highlighting that nobody should throw around the term 'addiction' without realizing the weight the word carries.
According to him, it's the Covid-19 lockdowns are making us spend more time on social media because of how much things have changed. It's not all doom and gloom with social media, however, we should be aware of how much its use affects us.
"We would say that it is more than likely that society as a whole spent more time on social media and other internet-based platforms during the Covid-19 lockdowns than before, simply because for many, their normal day to day life was turned upside down, or even stopped altogether, and so a lot of people found they had more spare time on their hands. Some people turned to social media during the lockdown to stay connected with others, which is really important and actually a healthy approach to take. Where it starts to negatively affect a person is when being on social media consumes them completely, and they no longer want to be present in their actual 'offline' day."

Bored Panda was also interested to understand where the line between a regular social media user and somebody who is addicted lies. Albuquerque's take on this is that even though this line is different for each individual, it's important to recognize whether or not the person has lost the power of choice.
"If the person cannot undertake their regular day to day routine without being on social media or needing to get back to being on social media, as in they have potentially developed not only a psychological desire to be online but also physical urges begin as well, then there could well be an addiction there," he went into detail.
"An unhealthy relationship with social media could also be recognized if the individual develops mental health illness from being online, for example, feelings of anxiety or depression arising during or after being on social media. Similarly, for some people we have treated at our UK Addiction Treatment Centres, being on social media is a trigger for them to then misuse drugs or alcohol. During therapy, we address why a person drinks alcohol or misuses drugs, and for some, it is because of their unhealthy relationship with social media," the UKAT Group Head of Treatment revealed how social media can be linked to other addictions.

"The most important piece of advice we can give is to be mindful and aware; check in with yourself during and after time spent on social media, ask yourself how do you feel? Can you now switch off and get on with your day? Any negative feelings or inability to move on from being online should be a red flag," Albuquerque said.
We’re social animals after all, as David Brooks argues in his book. And the desire to be accepted by our peers and our community members is hardwired into us: we’re far more social than our modern culture of individualism gives us credit for. Approval, love, adoration, respect—they’re all things that we want.
However, taken to an extreme, our desire for social approval can grow into desperation. Couple that with social media addiction (we are, some of us, spending more time online than usual and the problem could be getting worse) and you’ve got the perfect breeding ground for folks who want to show the world their best possible side in exchange for attention online. At any cost.

According to ‘UK Rehab,’ overusing social media affects more than just the individual: the community spirit can break down and there’s also a general loss in productivity. What’s more, social media addiction “can also trigger mental health problems” and will continue to lead to even more issues as it’s becoming “even more prevalent than drinking.”
You’d need to see a specialist to determine whether or not you’re actually addicted to social media, but, in general, addiction is something that we continue to do despite it having obvious negative effects on us.
Something else to keep an eye out for that could indicate that we’re addicted to social media is that we hide how much time we spend on social media. What’s more, we fall behind on our responsibilities both at home and at work, we get defensive whenever somebody brings the subject up, and we withdraw from the real world to spend more time online.

I'm sorry but no. I've been debating saying something or not because I know the inevitable backlash but I've got too. For those saying "she's beautiful" no she's not. She is MORBIDLY obese. She is effectivly killing herself. Now I'm by no means a thin girl, and I'm not saying you can't love yourself if you are a big girl like me. You can. What I AM saying is we should not be putting this woman on the cover of magazines and lauding her as beautiful. In the 90's we agreed as a society that we would not glorify unhealthy bodies, and that's why heroine chic and anorexic models were removed. Swinging to the other end of the spectrum may seem progressive and accepting, but in reality it's the same exact thing. It's telling young women, "this is beautiful", "this is fine", "this is healthy". It's not. I've every respect for Tess, I'm delighted she's happy with who she is and I want her to live a long and happy life. But glorifying this kind of body shape as ideal is not right

The sad thing is that they're trying to be different but end up looking all the same. Big pucker lips, (half open of course because they're sexy and they know it), big eyes with fake lashes (can also be used for shades in the summer), tiny waist, big boobs and enormous butts. Oh and don't forget the hair. Part in the middle, wavy, boob length. It's getting ridiculous.

I don’t understand why people do this kind of stuff. I kinda feel sorry for them but I’m also annoyed with them at the same time for claiming to be “Influencers” and letting young girls and guys feel like they have to look a certain way. A way that isn’t even attainable because it’s obvious a lot of this is photoshop. Also I noticed some people in the comments on here and other posts making hateful comments related to women’s bodies either a girl is too skinny and looks gross or she’s too fat and disgusting. Comments like that are probably what lead to some of these people doing s**t like this.

The ones that edit their bodies/faces to freakish proportions aren’t so great, but some of the other ones are just lighting/angles/makeup. I don’t know about you, but I don’t tend to post the pictures I look bad in, so I can’t blame them for picking the best ones even if those are them posed to show themselves from the best angle and light. If I sit tall and have my hair on my shoulders, my face and neck look a whole lot slimmer than when I’m hunched over like a gargoyle with a messy bun eating ice cream, lol, but it doesn’t mean they both aren’t what I actually look like. Additionally, lighting can do amazing things. If I take a selfie with a window in front of me, my face looks smooth and a lot younger and brighter. If I turn and take it with that light coming from the side, you’ll see shadows exaggerating my pores and any uneven surface of my skin and my nose will look more bulbous than it really is. Some of these “real” photos are just them in awful lighting.

Some of these don't seem like influencers, just regular people with ig account. That's sad and they shouldn't be mocked, how messed up is it that women feel like they've got to hide their age or poc that they've got to look white? It's bad when it's influencers because they influence people (duh) but I'd say that in the case of regular people they're more victims than anything else

I've never understood why people edit photos let alone to this extreme. Very one is beautiful in their on unique way, like 'troufaki13' said in his comment ' everyone trying to be different but all end up looking the same' I used to model myself and when I'd look at the photos that were editted I didn't look like me. So what I have a mole under my eye and one on my cheek, so what I have a scar on my nose, so what my skin has fine wrinkles at 30. I am me, you shouldn't have to edit yourself to be liked. This is my personal opinion and I don't mean any disrespect and cause upset

Why are people so triggered by this? We pay actors millions to be somebody they are not, but when these people do it, everybody goes crazy. Which is especially weird on a site like BoredPanda, which is all about body shaming is bad, and everybody should be able to identify as they want. And what's more, the only way to 'discover' these people is by hanging out on their IG accounts. So if you know that this triggers you, why not just stay away from these IG accounts? Looking for people just to bash them because they are different is a very bad character trait, no matter the type of difference.

Hi Rob, i totally get your point, but disagree in one: Robert Downey Jr doesn't go on media claming he's the real Iron Man and that he can actually fly. That is a lie and people don't respond well to openly lying. And about people hanging on this people's IG accounts,YES: don't watch it then. I think the perfect solution is to ignore them. The less people watch them, the faster they vanish. My concearns are that some (maybe 5 of them on this whole post) claim to have a perfect body doing such and such diet (sponsored) and people might fall for it expecting miracles, sounds like misleading advertising. Anyway, once again, see your point and agree with you: DONT LIKE IT, DON''T WATCH IT. Have a nice day and be safe my friend.

What makes you think these folks have BDD? Absolutely none of these images show any kind of symptoms of the disorder, it's just people wanting to follow a specific trend. BDD is a real problem and shouldn't be used as an excuse for people who just plainly want to look different.

The sad thing is that they're trying to be different but end up looking all the same. Big pucker lips, (half open of course because they're sexy and they know it), big eyes with fake lashes (can also be used for shades in the summer), tiny waist, big boobs and enormous butts. Oh and don't forget the hair. Part in the middle, wavy, boob length. It's getting ridiculous.

I don’t understand why people do this kind of stuff. I kinda feel sorry for them but I’m also annoyed with them at the same time for claiming to be “Influencers” and letting young girls and guys feel like they have to look a certain way. A way that isn’t even attainable because it’s obvious a lot of this is photoshop. Also I noticed some people in the comments on here and other posts making hateful comments related to women’s bodies either a girl is too skinny and looks gross or she’s too fat and disgusting. Comments like that are probably what lead to some of these people doing s**t like this.

We all have something we don´t like about ourselves: our legs, hair, eyes, nose,... and it´s ok...I don´t like my nose, and sometimes filter and photoshop is a temptation...

The ones that edit their bodies/faces to freakish proportions aren’t so great, but some of the other ones are just lighting/angles/makeup. I don’t know about you, but I don’t tend to post the pictures I look bad in, so I can’t blame them for picking the best ones even if those are them posed to show themselves from the best angle and light. If I sit tall and have my hair on my shoulders, my face and neck look a whole lot slimmer than when I’m hunched over like a gargoyle with a messy bun eating ice cream, lol, but it doesn’t mean they both aren’t what I actually look like. Additionally, lighting can do amazing things. If I take a selfie with a window in front of me, my face looks smooth and a lot younger and brighter. If I turn and take it with that light coming from the side, you’ll see shadows exaggerating my pores and any uneven surface of my skin and my nose will look more bulbous than it really is. Some of these “real” photos are just them in awful lighting.

Tons of these were photoshopped and it's kinda terrible, BUT there is a lot to be said for angles, lighting, and camera lenses. Danae Mercer on Instagram shows a lot of how influencers make themselves look better and honestly it's kinda interesting.

Some of these don't seem like influencers, just regular people with ig account. That's sad and they shouldn't be mocked, how messed up is it that women feel like they've got to hide their age or poc that they've got to look white? It's bad when it's influencers because they influence people (duh) but I'd say that in the case of regular people they're more victims than anything else

I've never understood why people edit photos let alone to this extreme. Very one is beautiful in their on unique way, like 'troufaki13' said in his comment ' everyone trying to be different but all end up looking the same' I used to model myself and when I'd look at the photos that were editted I didn't look like me. So what I have a mole under my eye and one on my cheek, so what I have a scar on my nose, so what my skin has fine wrinkles at 30. I am me, you shouldn't have to edit yourself to be liked. This is my personal opinion and I don't mean any disrespect and cause upset
