According to a 2022 survey by the Pew Research Center, about one in four married or cohabiting parents feel judged by people they interact with on online groups, with 7% claiming they experience this always or very often.

And the subreddit 'Insane Parents' is probably responsible for a fair share of the pie. However, once you scroll through this internet community, it becomes hard to blame them.

There's no shortage of moms posting their anti-vaxxer rants on Facebook and overprotective dads who want to forbid their kids from dating for as long as they're alive. So someone has to call them out before they convince anyone that such behavior is acceptable, right?

Why the hate for ginger hair? I dyed my mousy brown hair ginger all through my teens and twenties. I do live in Scotland though so it's very normal here.

A problem that 'Insane Parents' members face is that they are sometimes accused of faking their posts.

One of the most fascinating aspects of the sub is that the stories told rely on screenshots (often text messages between parent and child).

This leads to a strange dynamic where posters not only have to "prove" their experiences, but their struggles are also gamified into small, digestible pieces, the most surprising of which get upvoted.

(A little) Sorry to offend: Christianity is one of the most evil inventions man ever brought upon this world. I lost a cousin to suic!de because his Christian mother told him the hallucinations were real and his lack of faith in Jesus was causing this suffering. She hid his meds, performed many "laying on of hands," and shared his entire life with her congregation until he couldn't take it anymore. She found him (very not alive in very gruesome manner) in her closet after church one afternoon. She deserves the trauma of finding him. All of it. Try and tell me "not all Christians..." and I will spam you until the end of time with stories of the exact opposite

So sorry for your loss. I have a tough time with this issue. On the one hand, I agree that Christianity has resulted in so much harm to people over the millenia it's sickening (although it seems most organized religions have caused a lot of harm and a zealot from any of them is dangerous). On the other hand, there are so many followers we share this world with who are never going to give up their basic faith because it's what allows them to handle existing. I am not, nor could I ever be, a person of faith, but I do know how awful existential issues are, so I can understand clinging to something that alleviates that anguish. It seems to me the best course of action is only to criticize when, where and how such harm is being caused and leave alone those who are minding their own business in practicing their faith, whatever it is. So I end up a bit in the "not all Christians" camp just because I don't see how else we can all share this world together with any hope of relative peace.

Many years ago, when I was a rather lively little child, in case we had to walk through busy streets my mother kept me on a leash, and it was a "leash" for children, socially accepted, which prevented the risk of accidents. If whoever wrote the post really asked the mother if her son was a rescue, he only showed his phenomenal stupidity and arrogance. I hope he was treated as he deserved.

This needs more context. Was it a leash? Or was it toddler reins of some description? I know people are divided over those but maybe this kid is a runner and it’s the only way mum can reassure herself and keep him safe without literally dragging him around by the hand.

    Lou Cam

Some toddlers will leg it as soon as they wriggle from a hand and yes many will shoot a cross a road faster than a blink of an eye. If you have more than one toddler especially they are an absolute necessary safety item. It's not a parent fail.use them and I see it's normally the child free who criticise these.

I'm child free, and would never criticize a parent for using a leash. Not just bc the child could run into traffic, but nowadays all a parent has to do is spend 30 seconds to compare prices at the grocery store - no neglect - and the child is gone. Ref: John Walsh

Coming from a family with a lot of ADHD these could be used more than they are. Two cousins have landed in the hospital back when they were kids and the times one of the kids got lost in a shopping mall are too many to count.

I have memories of a harness when I was about three (early 1970s). Mum didn't want to risk losing her toddler at the mall. I call it fair. Letting a toddler walk around under their own steam is great for them - exercise, self-propulsion, full body engagement - everything. Bonus: helps tucker them out for nap time when you get home. After watching too many parents chase after a little 'un who suddenly speeds off after a candy wrapper blowing along a metro platform, I am all for leashes!

Unsync your calendar from your mother’s ASAP. If you’re old enough to get birth control on your own, you’re old enough to have your own private calendar so your mom can’t butt into your private business.

If I didn't clean up my stuff or I got too interested in something it mysteriously disappeared. And now people are asking me why I get ( almost ) aggressive when people touch my stuff...... Maybe because I've "lost" too much?! Not that I'm materialistic, but stuff that had an emotional value was taken away from me so it's mostly my photos or books or a stuffy that was given to me by someone special that I'm angered about.

Woah, i have a 4 year old right now. But i would never ever think of s**t like that!! He often lets his stuff lay around anywhere, but... There are way better solutions than this one! I help him clean up most times. If he just don't want to help at all, all goes into a chest and he can't use them for an hour. After the hour, i get the chest, he puts the stuff he doesn't want to play with away and can again play with the rest. Not nice as well, but far from that b***h i hope...😔

My daughter is 15. We have an escalating level of consequences. We talk about what the issue is, how to resolve it, the timeframe to do it, and what the escalation will be if it isn't. This doesn't mean we don't get escalation, but it does mean she has the opportunity to control her situation. Drastic punishments and threats only create an environment of distrust and fear. Kids should be learning how to do better, not be intimidated.

this sounds absolutely amazing. I was a good kid, but I got threatened by getting things taken away. They almost never actually did it, but it's made me overly attached to things I feel like might be taken away one day. I'm not saying I had bad parents, I love them so much and they did great things. I have bad anxiety and mentioning something might be taken away just makes it worse in me

If those "parents" were standing in front of me (with or without my fiancee) they'd know we heard, they'd know very well not to act on their promise plus those kids would get our number without them knowing, just in case they needed help. People like this don't deserve kids.

My parents disowned me for being gay. I'm a combat veteran and that means nothing to them. They tried to force me into conversion therapy, but I was 23 and living in Chicago 1500 miles away from them. Though they were only Sunday Catholics, they believed my being gay was the worst thing ever. My mom also believed that abortion was a crime even if the pregnancy was the result of rape or incest or even put the mother's life a risk. Us gay men in our 50s grew up in some unloving households.

You know, the tracking isn’t the problem. If the kid goes missing it can be a useful tool to help find them. The problem is the f*****g third degree about where the kid is. It’s one thing to check in to see if they’re OK, it’s quite another to interrogate them about where they are. Back tf off. If the kid gets in a jam, or just decides they want to go home, they’ll call you. Believe me.

My wife, daughter, and I are all tracking each other. It's not a secret, but if my daughter (15) turns it off I would ask why she would feel the need to hide where she is? We don't have strict rules or expectations, I just want her to think about why the need for privacy and if it really is a safe idea. We also all know each others passwords, debit card codes, safe combinations... We also don't lock doors in the house - though we have asked her to knock before coming in, we do as well. If I don't trust her, how will she trust me? We are raising her to be honest and to know what is a respectful way to be treated and treat others... suffocation breeds blind rebellion.

I mean, this is a grey-zone to me. It would be nice to share location with family in case something bad happens, but also texting and demand to know every step they take is too much. I'd rather have my child text me about change of plans obsessively than me texting them obsessively. Preferably just keep the tracking on, just in case, and both of us not checking or texting until they get home. Point s, security=good for both, abusing the security = not good for either.

Had this happen to a student one year when I was a TA. He came out over break and his parents disowned him and cut him off. The uni was able to step up, get him a dorm and on a payment plan for tuition.

If you're ready to abandon your kid for turning out gay or trans or something, don't have kids!!! My very judgemental, not winning any mother of the year awards, mom has criticized an opposite sex partner of mine by claiming my same sex ex was better and when I came out as trans, the first thing she did was to start suggesting the male baby names she liked when she was pregnant with me.

Had my friend move in to my house when he came out to his parents on his 18th birthday and they refused to let him come home. My parents welcomed him with open arms. I was so shocked when I went to pick him up that day and his mum wasn't even helping him pack- just stood shouting at him, his dad wouldn't even stay in the house whilst he packed. We're now in our mid 30's and he's slaying life!

I had a friend that had a similar problem with her father, he was not abusive in any way, but he lacked bondary comprehention lol, só She was 19, and sometimes he would enter her Room widout knocking, either to tell something to her, or to pick up something he needed, só One day She decided to get full nude on the bed, and pretend She was sleeping, he eventually goes in, and imidiatly out, according to her, now he always knocks before entering the Room.

If you get home at 3, you can't have the dishes done at 3, it's not possible. This mom sets up her kid for failure and enjoys rubbing it in. That's a very big red flag. Using cameras in the house to spy on them is another.

I hate people who have no concept of how f*****g long it takes to get stuff done. This parent is expecting their kid to have dishes done—-I’m assuming breakfast dishes that no one else bothered to wash, btw—-15 minutes BEFORE they even get home! Sounds like the a*****e was making up a reason to punish their poor kid. I predict the millisecond the kid turns 18, they’ll leave and go full no contact for the rest of their lives. Hope they’re an only child, so the parents can be deprived of grandchildren (that they’d probably also abuse), and end up dying alone. Which they fully deserve.

Furthermore, even if children get into an argument with a parent, it's not like they immediately mess up their relationship. Most kids — more than 60% — said they usually take a little time and eventually things go back to normal. Some kids said that they make up quickly (28% of younger kids and 18% of older kids.)

It’s great if you can forgive (and be forgiven) quickly and settle things within the family and without the need to search for support on the internet.

The Gabriel Fernandez story was the one that just did me in. I cried uncontrollably for that little boy. He lived less than 30 minutes from me. To keep reading these horrible stories of abuse where NOTHING is done until it's too late? My heart cannot take it. If I knew of these stories before that, I would have gladly taken them in. No child should ever have to suffer these atrocities. So many people out there full of love would take care of them. It's so sad.

This is why gun ownership should be so difficult, complicated, and time consuming that most people drop out before they get through all the steps. These people should never have had a gun anywhere near them. This man would still be alive if they didn’t have a handy means to kill him.

The thing is criminals don't follow legal and responsible gun ownership laws. You're right these people should have never had one. Perhaps the security guard should have. Many states including the one I live in (Ohio) have passed open carry laws so you can carry a gun legally without a permit. If we're going to live in the Wild West it's best to arm yourself and be prepared I suppose? I'm not really a gun person but I inherited several from my father when he passed away. I don't carry any with me but I do have a healthy respect for them and I know how to use, load, disassemble and reassemble them all. If someone were to break in my house with the intent to harm me or my family I would not hesitate to use one.

My extreme Christian grandmother thinks dyed hair tattoos and piercings are S I N and should never happen. Every time someone with slightly dyed hair comes along, rant. She won't say my sister's name at all because not only does she have all three of those, she likes Disney and Harry potter, and as far as I know is bi. As an example of how social media is used wrong, she said "what if someone makes a video on how to destroy somrthing" I said it would be reported. She said "Ok what if they make a video about" remember this is exactly what she said "how to dye your hair wacky unnatural colors that god never ordained? Its so common no one thinks it's bad" and the urge to say "because it's not bad" almost got the best of me and I almost got exorcized /j

This wouldnt be possible here. CPS can take a quick call and order the kid to be taken under custody, meds given, and the parents can discuss later if they want their child back.

No I think that's wrong, because my cousin almost died because of his father's side religious belief and if my aunt would have agreed to it no one would have been able to do anything. There have been cases where the child has been sick and the parents don't agree on what to do and a judge had to make the decision. CPS doesn't get involved because that is not considered abuse therefor it isn't CPS area of work.

Pretty sure in cases like this, hospitals can take emergency custody. I've heard of it happening with Jehovah's Witnesses who won't let their kid get a blood transfusion. You're allowed to let yourself die, but you're not allowed to let your beliefs kill your kid.

The group title is fitting. "Reeducation" is always a totalitarian euphemism for miseducation/indoctrination, often communist (Pol Pot/Cambodia, China now the Uygurs and "laojiao/laogao" before that, Vietnam postwar, North Korea now, ...).

To give an example, when I was on holiday in Florida last year, I was buying some passes for something in the resort, the manager on duty took my card to the card machine behind the desk, he said they have the ability to impersonate to get the transactions through and bypass the PIN. However my UK bank blocked this and send me alerts. I had to put my PIN in then authorise the purchase via my banking app. The manager explained that bank security in the USA is quite lax compared to Europe and other places.

Some people are lucky enough to never having to deal with the real struggle of life, and hence they are truely ignorant of what monsters other people have to constantly deal with. My guess is that the mother was the bully herself, back when she was in school, and hence for her bullying was fun and games, as she did not have to pay the price for it. You often hear priviledged people give really crappy life advice, such as people living on minimum vage working two jobs to make ends meet should just start saving and investing. Life (or probably their parents) has given some quite atypical optionsm which means that they basically have no real life experience that grounds them, and that they can base their "logic" on.

My mother in-law said she was considering not getting her next vaccination because of the side effects she had last time (a couple of days with a fever and low energy). We told her that if she doesn't get it, she won't be around our child, who arrives at the end of this month. Mother in-law is now definitely getting vaccinated.

Before my children got a mobile phone, or registering for online accounts, I sat down with them and we discussed safety. I explained that there might be a time when I would want to do a safety check. That time never came. I never needed to check my children's phones, nor their accounts.

And if your child refused to let you check their phone, I presume you’d have done something other than destroy the phone. Good for you for raising good kids and not having to go to extremes. I don’t know how people do it. I’m just imagining the mom here being afraid for her daughter and doing this big gesture so that people will leave her daughter alone. I’m assuming that the mother is exercising good judgment; I think that’s fair. It would be different if i considered this abuse, but I don’t think it rises to that level. She’s well within her rights to discipline her child in this way

This is why I keep my phone under lock and key. Not exactly controlling mummy, but a*****e 12-y-o cousin who tries to ‘hack’ into my phone to play a game his mum won’t let him play, gets angry when the ‘hacking tip’ didn’t work magically, and proceeds to partially destroy my phone afterwards. Goodbye money, hello high blood pressure and another two years of walking doggos to earn money. 😧

Do people seriously not know how to use the parental controls through the service providers tools? Majority of phone plans have tools that can allow parental access. Parenting fail.

IMMEDIATELY call / text / email/ carrier pigeon / smoke signal /- whatever it takes - your recruiter and potential boss and HR at that new job and tell them to ignore anything any crazy lady tells them about your start date. Assure them that you will be there on the previously agreed upon date. Leave for Seattle NOW and once there change your phone # and cut contact with this person.

Absolutely. Those who home-school their children properly are often part of a wider community of home-schoolers so that their children mix and go on group outings and get to have the social aspect as well. That's a very important part of school. This is someone who clearly shouldn't be doing this at all.

I was thinking the same thing. My mom started reading to me in the womb (I kid you not), and just about every night after that. We also made regular trips to the library, and as a result, I was reading story books by age 5. Books were, and still are, a huge part of my life. IMO, there are only three reasons why an 8-year-old wouldn't know how to read: 1. She's visually impaired. 2. She has a learning disorder. 3. She has not been taught. And for any parent to let their kid get to age 8 without learning how to read is just neglectful. Pure and simple. And it's also why stupid people shouldn't breed.

If you look at this realistically it's more like, 1)Playing with other kids (it's not school school at 3.5 years old) 2)Home for a nap for 3 hours 3) looking at books sat down with an adult 4) dancing (physical exercise not bad) 5) home, food, bed. So no, it's not over burdening, but writing it out like that is attention seeking and that weird type of "look at me I'm a terrible (I mean excellent) parent and tell me how great I am." People just leave your kids lives off the internet you weirdos.

Back in the early 80's my friend had a scary Italian father. So did I but mine wasn't mental like hers. He found out she liked a boy and had been talking to him on the phone so he shaved her head!!!! She had long, beautiful hair and he said "this will keep the boys away from my daughter!" UGH. I'll never forget her showing up to school in a baseball cap sobbing her eyes out in the girls bathroom. We all hugged her and told her that she was still as beautiful as ever.

I cut my own bangs in middle school. My parents micro-managed my life so badly that they got really upset. They tried to make an appointment with a hairdresser to cut my hair as short as my shortest hair for punishment. The first two hung up on them and the third one asked for our address to tell the police. It never happened.

Pasword protected online backups. I once read about a mother who deleted her son's Minecraft world because she was upset about him taking some coockies without permission. She and was completely clueless about what atomic bomb she had set off by doing so. With unreliable crazy parents, taking proper precautions and making sure that there is a way out, is unfortunately what is needed... and alcohol can indeed make people do crazy things, as they play by a completely different set of rules and is driven by other forces than normal humans.

Listen! Masks aren’t as much to protect you from others germs as they are to protect others from your germs. Wearing one means you care about others and don’t want them to get sick, and it’s also why the more people wear them, the better.

It violates federal law in us to reveal student information. It is wonderful. Parents hold financial support if kids are telling them, which they can do. But the other issue is when the parents will only pay for a certain degree or field.

At my son's university, they made a point of telling parents NOT TO DO THIS TO ADULT students. They make it extremely difficult for parents to do it with 2-factor authentication. Parents who treat their kids like life is a transaction, lose the respect of their kids.

Ah, Iron Maiden, the evilest out there. Been listening to them since I was 8 and it did a lot to me. I had fun, made friends, became a singer, sang on bands, started studying singing, found my calling and became a classical soprano all because one day I sang Fear of the Dark as a goof during my friend's band rehearsal and liked it. Wicked Iron Maiden making people happy.

Not to mention the lore of Iron Maiden is often humans (or...Eddie, let's be real) overcoming evil forces. The mobile game has you come up against obvious evils - n*zi goons, the devil himself. Very far from devil worship, further from evil. Eddie may look a little gross I guess, but he's good beans.

Bruce Dickinson is an airline pilot, successful businessman, cancer survivor, honorary doctorate in history besides being the lead singer of Iron Maiden. Definitely no good role model for young people.

We had a mother do this last week at my work! Not smash an xbox, but blame a "mummy moment" for tossing her daughters book in the pool because her daughter was incessantly asking her mother to read it because she loved it so much. The mother was buying a replacement book, and sure i don't know the details of what happened, but I felt so odd listening to a mother complain that her child loved a book so much she wanted to share it with her. It was one of the Keeper of the Lost Cities books, btw.

I've been a pro makeup artist for over 30 years, am in a film and TV union, have a pension and amazing medical insurance. They believed in me, and that was what drove me to succeed in my career. My brother has a college degree and works in sports and they are equally proud of both of us.

I can watch whatever I want as long as it's on a streaming service we have, and if it's a rating higher than what I'm supposed to watch I have to ask my mom but she usually says yes. How the heck do you expect him to ever learn how to be independent if you micromanage his life like that? You are raising a baby not creating a man by doing that.

I mean it is sort of true, but more of a correlation. Dying in childhood or young used to be really common in the past. People didn't really die of cancer, something else got them first. Vaccines made those illnesses much less common

Like, even if vaccines caused cancer (and I'm only using it hypothetically and for the sake of argument), how would they just end up to that conclusion? It can get worse. I'm 40 and my mother still feels like she has the right to hit me any time she feels like I "deserve" it, which is often. And she doesn't spank me on the heiny, either. She goes for the backhand or the punch.

"I am an adult, you are not allowed to hit me"...being an adult has nothing to do with this, it is irrelevant. It should simply had said "You are not allowed to hit me, or anybody else for that matter". A human being a child is no excuse for physical violense either, if anything it only makes it worse, as they will have a harder time defending themself being the small one.

Well, at least the boomers aren’t blaming my generation for once, Gen X (1967 - 1980). Let me share with you a secret….boomers were horrible parents ! Never watched most of us, we watched ourselves, a lot of us were latchkey kids. Parents used to call us the “slacker” generation because we were literally checked out from their BS before we even started to play the game. We’ve been over it since day 1. “We teach our children culture “. No you don’t boomer ! You spout misogynistic, homophonic, racist diatribes and expect Gen X, Millennials, and Gen Z to just fall in line with the status quo. Boomers in their generation in the 80’s, were responsible for the “greed is good” mentality. Corporations were allowed to plunder the wealth and resources of the world at the expense of society and the planet. Now younger people are tryng to reverse the damage of idiots like this guy. These are the guys that probably want women out of the workplace and a national ban on abortions.

The issue is that it is not just hitting them, but could also hit some innocent ones as a result. This is because 1) The vacinations are not 100% secure, and 2) if they catch covid, there is a risk that they'll spread it to other people who is not vaccinated, not because they believe in all that antiwax nonsense, but because vacinating them wouldn't be ethically responsible due to them being in some sort of weakened state (e.g. cancerpatients).

I grew up without a personal phone for a big part of my childhood, just as millions of people have before me. We somehow managed to survive, despite our parent not knowing exactly where we were at every moment. In fact I think that the idea that you should be able to contact everybody at whatever time you have the need to be a bit intrusive.

Reminds me of episode of House M.D. years ago. Woman with infant comes in to the clinic complaining her baby is sick. Dr. Gregory House : [examining a baby whose mother isn't vaccinating him because she feels it's a scam; House takes the child's stuffed frog] All natural, no dyes. It's a good business - all-natural children's toys. Those toy companies, they don't arbitrarily mark up their frogs. They don't lie about how much they spend on research and development. And the worst that a toy company can be accused of is making a really boring frog. Gribbit, gribbit, gribbit. You know another really good business? Teeny tiny baby coffins. You can get 'em in frog green, fire engine red. Really. The antibodies in yummy mummy only protect the kid for six months, which is why these companies think they can gouge you. They think that you'll spend whatever they ask to keep your kid alive. Want to change things? Prove 'em wrong. A few hundred parents like you decide they'd rather let their…..

Unreal I am seeing this too often. How does incubator of a woman (not a mother, maybe egg donor) be allowed to have children that she doesn’t want or appreciate…and their thousands of childless financially stable couples pining for a child. You don’t want your child because you want to drink, smoke , or just have anger issues ? We need a website called: www.takemykid.com. Childless couples can click and pick up a child, the state interviews them and checks their home and the child gets a new loving home. No money exchanged and it’s not trafficking. And the idiot mother is relieved of having to be an actual mother. Just a thought, a way to save children from this torture.

"Quit job"? I don't think he left voluntairely, but that that is just the "pretty" expression for what happened once the boss put a knife to his throat, perhaps giving him the option of quitting dringking or being fired. Alcoholics often has some bad conscience about what they are doing and hence they "rewrite the reality" in an attempt to hide how bad things really are. As a relative that can be really uncomfortable to deal with, because you are constantly put in a cognitive disonanse because what you are told and what you can observe is not in line with one another, but on the other hand you don't want to reach the wrong conclusions and make false aqusations. It is a mess to deal with.

Honestly, I had teenagers not that long ago and I paid for their phones. It is 100% fair for a parent to lock out the phone of their child (under their roof) if they are not responding. All they have to do is text “I’m out w/friends. Home by 9.” Not that hard. Definitely 911 should be accessible no matter what.

The kids gonna grow to be a toddler, kid, teen, adult, and even elderly person. Keep that in mind when naming kids.

Unless oldest child consents to it. I was basically a live in babysitter for a couple of years but my parents still ASKED before leaving me with the kids and were always back when they said they'd be back.

In the Reddit thread, the girl is 16 and her mother is making her watch her 3 1/2 year old and 2 year old sibling. This happened to me too growing up. Never went on dates or the prom or spent time at my friends house. How come alcoholic parents force teenager daughters to babysit their siblings for FREE …but I don’t know if that happens to teenage boys ? Anyone else ???

This is exactly the reason why I got a P.O. box. My mother and older sister open my mail and my packages.

My father STILL tries to open any of my mail that ends up at their house. I’m 46.

Wasn't allowed to use my Walkman in class. I'd assume it's the same with phones.

This is also how you get all your kids' friends to help them lie to you.

I understand not wanting them to have Snapchat or certain apps. Especially if they're younger. Don't humiliate them. Don't be cruel. This just teaches them to hide their secrets better.

One of my teenager's has a friend whose mother either sends messages pretending to be he son or dictates messages. It's very obvious and so creepy. All we can do is tell our child to message his friend keeping in mind the mother reads everything, protect his boundaries, tell us if anything off happens. I feel bad for the other kid, they're a very codependent family.

Allowing a parent to do this isn’t helping, even if they didn’t agree with it and accidentally liked it, they should be clear with him that his behavior is concerning and unacceptable

Why even listen to the father? Do your own thing, and hide your likes and the rest.
