“Nature Is Freaking Lit”: 50 Times People Were Surprised By Nature (New Pics)
InterviewWildlife is majestic, and observing it can be an amazing experience. However, while for some the wild can be mere minutes away from their homes, being surrounded by nature is a luxury for many. Venturing out to seek beautiful vistas and amazing sceneries can be tricky for the majority of people, too. Trips to the wild can be quite expensive in terms of time, money, and effort. You also often have to be able-bodied and quite fit to go on such adventures. That is why so many of us are so grateful to wildlife photographers.
Wildlife photography gives us a glimpse of how beautiful it is out there without us needing to make a lot of effort. It allows people to admire magnificent animals, stunning landscapes, and sometimes even dangerous grounds they probably will not set foot on during their lifetime. It also lets us witness the negative impact humans have on nature. Photos of wildlife enables us to experience the world we otherwise wouldn’t be able to.
The following collection of the impressive wildlife images was created by using images shared by members of this Reddit community. Scroll down to marvel at the snapshots of the wonderful mother Earth.

This Photo Won The 2020 Ocen Photography Awards. It's By Tobias Baumgaertner Who Photographer Two Widowed Penguins Who Would Come To Watch The Melbourne Skyline To Comfort Each Other
Oh god this is both heartwarming and heartbreaking. I have so many mixed emotions looking at this
It’s amazing how we still mostly believe that animals are just animals. They might have a different moral compass completely focused upon survival but there are so many examples that we all have feelings that should always be considered, even the world of plants. I for one am truly intrigued by the behaviour of the orca attacks around Spain.
The idea that we, the most damaging species on the planet, also matters more as well.

That is what it looks like, but it is actually a youngish male with an elderly female. As they have no mates, they are free to be as friendly as they'd like I suppose. I just looked up Melbourne fairy penguins for details.
Load More Replies...They don't mate for life, but they do pair up for life. But that's it. Once their partner has died they will pair again. Male penguins will also team up if one loses the egg they are watching, so it's not uncommon for a hatchling to have a male pair watching over it.
Load More Replies...Fake. "Earthcare St Kilda, a non-profit that manages the colony, wrote that the penguins are related. They identified the penguin on the right as a pre-molt adult and the penguin on the left as a juvenile that may be the offspring of the adult"
I immediately noticed the young penguin on the left & figured "their story" (as captioned above) is fake 😕

There’s one thing about nature photography that doesn’t always occur to us, the viewers: not all photos are as natural as one might think. In fact, photo staging and interfering with wildlife is not an uncommon practice. The ethics of wildlife photography are quite murky and while some publications present their own rules (such as the National Geographic and the BBC), they are not universal.
Of course, there are laws that prohibit certain actions, such as feeding animals in national parks or harassing endangered species. However, there isn’t a specific rulebook that photographers have to follow when composing their shots. Baiting animals with food as well as moving them around for a better backdrop can both be used to get that perfect shot. When talking to National Geographic, photographer Jeff Hogan also pointed out that professionals can sometimes barricade an animal in to prevent them from running away.
John Dominis, the late staff photographer for LIFE magazine for more than 20 years, claimed that back in the '60s, wildlife photographers often staged their images. “I felt that my job was to get the pictures, he stated years later. I learned how to bait animals and do things from the experts in Africa. We shot a gazelle and put it in a tree and waited for a cat to come. I didn’t feel bad about it at all. It sounds terrible now, I know, and maybe my attitude would be different now. But it wasn’t then, and I don’t know what more to say about it. I know I’ve been criticized a lot. But to me, I had to do what I did.”

My cat Eanie goes out to meet her best friend the fox every night. She meets it at the top of the steps by the garage, they have a little time playing chase with each other then the fox tries to leave to find food. She follows him to the top of the hill to wave him off. My camera is naff and doesn’t take good photos in low light and if I try to get closer the fox runs off.
With the actors and writers on strike, this may be a possibility
Load More Replies...In a way, it’s sort of understandable that back in the day, when technology wasn’t as advanced, maneuvering around with clunky cameras without being noticed was hard. It makes sense that things had to be arranged for perfect snapshots. Yet these days things haven’t changed. Luring animals with food is still commonplace. For example, chumming, or baiting sharks with fish, is a popular practice for underwater photographers that want to capture the great predators. However, the long-term impact of that is still unknown.
Some photographers are prepared to go even further and go to so-called photography game farms. Popular in the US, states like Montana and Minnesota, these farms keep captive wild animals in enclosures only releasing them to perform for their clients. There, professionals and enthusiasts alike can snap pictures of exotic animals such as snow leopards and tigers as well as local species like wolves and lynx. They can capture clean animals with impeccable fur leaping through the snow or looking around with their piercing gaze. Neat, fast, and efficient.
It's important to note that many high-profile publications and competitions prohibit submitting images from game farms. Still, you might find plenty of them shared online.

Sleeping Elephant Family , Rare Visuals
If only as humans, we guarded and protected the earth and all its inhabitants rather than just killing, raping and destroying everything. Makes me sad.
They were part of a herd of about 15 elephants that just started heading north one day a couple of years ago. No idea why or where they were going, the police set up drones to follow their journey and warn villages of their arrival. Along the way, people loaded up trucks with food for them and cleared their path, it was amazing to watch. This link has three videos, the last one shows a lot more video footage than the others, if you're interested: https://laughingsquid.com/elephants-take-nap/
Elephants typically sleep on their feet. They only laydown when they're absolutely exhausted. This herd of elephants in China traveled an insane amount of distance in their search for food after their forest was decimated by drought. The heartwarming part is that the Chinese supported these animals and didn't stop them from 'stealing' whatever food and water they found along the way, even if they were destructive.
The very most of the time these Elephants tried to destroy as little as possible. Usually you can watch elephants carefully step about fences to not damage them because they we humans build them because a lot of humans help Elephants they remember us not being a threat most of the time.
Load More Replies...Pretty sure this is the sad background information: This herd was forced to walk a massive distance trying to find a new home after humans took their land. They walked I think 1 or 2 years but couldn't find land that's not been occupied by humans (they scared the elephants away). So the herd turned around and walked the same way back. Exhausted from the unnaturally long journey, the herd laid down to sleep. This is supposed to be very unusual as normally they take turns sleeping as far as I remember.

Load More Replies...So, what are the basic guidelines for ethical wildlife photography? Well, there are a few things you have to follow if you want to take pictures of nature. The most important one is doing no harm. That goes both for landscapes and animals. For example, not altering or destroying a habitat for a better picture. Sure, moving a few branches off of an animal’s den might give you better view of what’s inside, but it might endanger the animal as it ruins their camouflage.

Load More Replies...The turtle dove is the UKs fastest declining bird and is on the brink of extinction. Tho it doesn't look like this, there is a hell of a lot of colour added to this image!
I know the bird, we have some in our front garden. And they have a lovely colour in the sunlight, but the colour enhancement in this photo is just ridiculous. The dominant colours are pastel greys.
Load More Replies...Does anyone familiar with these birds know the exact species or that this is not photoshopped color? No disrespect to the photographer but I just looked at hundreds of turtle dove pictures and the only one I could find with these colors is this exact same picture posted in a couple of places. They are a pretty bird but none of the others were THAT colorful. I realize there are other IRL birds with even more amazing colors - which is why I'm wondering if this is some sub species or something.
I went to a zoo ages ago and saw something like this -my partner and I referred to it as 'the fabulous pigeon '. I've lived in the UK all my life and this is not what we would call a turtle dove.

Also, earlier this year a commercial beekeeper in Utah had fed crushed candy canes to his bees, which caused the honey from his bees as well as other local commercial beekeepers' honey to be red. It rendered the honey unsellable as the honey was not produced from a floral source. And, previously in Brooklyn, some bees had gotten into the effluent of a maraschino cherry factory. Bees can also make red honey from visiting hummingbird feeders.

Load More Replies...Another great practice is getting to know the species you are taking pictures of. Things like, mating season time and signs of stress and alarm are especially good to know. That way, you’ll know when to back away and give the animal more space. In any case, it’s crucial to keep your distance and avoid any contact with the animal if possible. Interactions might alter their behavior which can be detrimental to their survival.

Rothschild giraffe, the only giraffe to have 5 horns. This baby was the head male giraffe at Melbourne zoo, sadly I heard he has died. The zoos are part of a worldwide breeding program...the picture was called no 500. As in 500th known giraffe of this species alive. Zoos do play a part in breeding endangered animals...and these beautiful giraffes are being moved all around Australi, New Zealand and other countries to keep a wide as possible genetic pool .
I had a poster of this exact photo on my door for years. It's so cute!
Feeding animals is also something to be cautious about. Many predators such a bears, wolves, and foxes can get used to getting handouts quite fast. They can get quite comfortable with asking for food to the point that they become aggressive about it. Then, the wildlife agencies have to eliminate them for the danger they pose. Getting used to humans also means they get closer to roads where they can get run over and places where people live where a similar fate awaits.

As the photographer Jeff Hogan notes, there are exceptions to every rule. “I knew a filmmaker once who, after working with an animal for many days, would leave it some food to make up for any interference, in case it had been distracted from finding food or something. That seemed respectful to me.”

Ethics are involved when it comes to postproduction part of the images as well. Many photographers like to “clean up” their compositions by erasing a stray leaf or a blade of grass from the photos, and this is fine. Altering the colors to make the subject pop is also quite innocent. Others, though, go a little further. “I've seen people do things like add more animals to a zebra herd to fill it out, says Hogan. That's misleading; it gives viewers a false sense of that environment, of how plentiful a species is.” This type of alterations crosses the line of photojournalism.

Load More Replies...Using drones for wildlife photography is quite controversial, too. From the first glance, the whole thing is quite innocent—the drone is quite far away and out of reach, and it’s not damaging or interfering with the environment, just observing it. Animals may even seem peaceful on camera, like they are not at all bothered by a drone. However, they are very loud and make an unusual noise that disturbs the animals. A study has shown that the heartrate of bears goes up to an alarming rate when hearing the drone. Sure, when they were being observed they did not run away in fear, but they did feel threatened.

Shots To Show How The Wind Wove The Grass To Claim This Wire Fence
I need to build a fence next summer. Wonder if I can convince the wind and grass to help me get this in the backyard. 🤞🏼😂

Load More Replies...How did the wind intertwine the grass? That seems almost impossible, that the wind did such a perfect job on such a long fence. I can't wrap my head around this.
Woven wire fence. And loose blades of grass blown by the wind, when the grass hits one of the wires in just bends around it and eventually million of grass blades create this. Also not good on the fence as the wind now pushes against it harder and will lay it over. A Baby Bison
A few other basic rules involve simply obeying the laws of the country and the rules of the sanctuary you are at. That can involve getting the necessary permits and maintaining appropriate distance from the animals. Also, once you’ve taken the photos and are wanting to publish them, be transparent about them. Brian Skerry, a photographer for National Geographic, says it plain and simple: “If I’m taking a picture of a tiger shark and don’t disclose the use of chum to attract it, in the caption or when questioned, then I’m being dishonest. In the most basic terms, if the intent is to deceive the viewer, then it’s wrong.”

All in all, when it comes to wildlife photography, respect and love for nature is key. As Jeff Hogan puts it: “If the only reason you are out in the wild is to get the shot, you will fail miserably, and you are more likely to compromise your ethics. If you truly love being out there, shot or no shot, everything will come to you. There's no reason to cheat.”
We hope that knowing all this will help you appreciate these photos even more. And if you’re looking for more stunning images, make sure to check out or previous picture collection here.

Load More Replies...This is actually a damselfly but they're in the same order, Odonata, as dragonflies. They're pretty awesome with their crazy coloration and often overlooked because they're smaller than their dragonfly cousins and don't spend as much time cruising around the waters. Without seeing its body, I can't say for certain, but may be a Common Blue damselfly. I recommend checking out the Variable Dancer (purple) and Ebony Jewelwing (black and metallic-like green) if anyone's interested.

In Response To Poaching, African Elephants Are Evolving To Be Tuskless
sorry for being a nerd and maybe also wrong but....this is the typical (mis)conception of evolution - there is no intention to reach/avoid something. This is the result of eliminating the genes those individuals with tusks were having. Now after a massive reduction of them, those with "no tusks" genes are prevailing and starting being visible. However, what a great thing to happen. Love you nature !
Maybe not such a great thing. The biologists on Human Footprint pointed out that normally, elephants are ecosystem engineers, uprooting trees and keeping grasslands open. Tuskless elephants may not be able to do this effectively.
Load More Replies...There was a segment about this on last week's episode of Human Footprint, which was all about hunting. The people they interviewed had identified the specific gene mutation that causes female elephants to be tuskless, by studying a population that had been drastically reshaped by the horrific multi-decade civil war in Mozambique. After the war, during which elephant tusks were extremely valuable trade goods, a huge percentage of the rebounding population does not have tusks.
They are very effective in "stomping" enemies to death, including humans that may harm them or their families

🔥 If Holly (Ilex Aquifolium) Finds Its Leaves Are Being Nibbled By Deer, It Switches Genes On To Make Them Spiky When They Regrow. So On Taller Holly Trees, The Upper Leaves (Which Are Out Of Reach) Have Smooth Edges, While The Lower Leaves Are Prickly
Sorry to be horribly pedantic, but only the genus has a capital letter. So, Ilex aquifolium. It just puts my teeth on edge. I’m a pedant ok?
While your pedantry is appreciated, it’s misplaced here. BP capitalizes every word of its entry titles. So, it’s possible this list’s author formatted the plant’s scientific name correctly, but once it was submitted to BP, the website auto-formatted it to have every word capitalized. Look at every single entry caption - each word is capitalized.
Load More Replies...I have a Holly Bush in my garden. No deer or any kind of predators, so why is every (repeat every) leaf spiky?
The ornamental cultivar has been selectively bred for that gene to be active all the time.

I was about to write this but had no idea how to spell it 😭😭😭😂😂. For those who don't get it a blue lobster was part of a big meme a little while back in which the image would prop up unexpectedly or in a strange place and the dracula-ish theme would play. Sorry I don't know the song but it's from an organ I'm pretty sure.

Sad enough it triggers me thinking: Would they throw it back after capturing it? Or would they charge extra when served as a meal?
Likely neither. I imagine it would end up in an aquarium or science laboratory/research.

I've never seen a cardinal in my city and certainly not on my 3rd floor balcony. But last week, on my birthday, I looked out and had a male cardinal eating at my bird restaurant. Never saw him since. My friend says they are messengers for the dead. I just lost one of my cats.
I just saw two cardinals chasing each other this morning. They were both males so it made me wonder if there was a female somewhere around.

That’s how a wyvern would look, IMO - wyverns are usually depicted as two-limbed and two-winged (no front limbs). True (Western) dragons usually have four limbs and two wings XD

Mother Hedgehog With New Born Babies
Hedgehog babies (called hoglets) aren’t actually spiky when they’re born. The spines are covered with a thin layer of skin which they break through about 5 hours after the hoglets are born. The spines are more flexible than adult ones, but still pretty spiky and a good defence against predators trying to eat them, even when they are tiny, and hoglets have full control over the muscles around their spines to move them for best protection. They harden even more over time, and develop brown colouration at the bottom of the spine (like you can see on the adult hedgehog), unless they are leucistic, in which case the spines stay white
Load More Replies...this is an african pygmy hedgehog. the hoglets are quite newly born. they should be left alone for 2 weeks, as the mother can and quite often does kill them if disturbed. they are not born with spikes. they come through quite quickly after birth.

🔥falcon Flew Over 10.000 Km From South Africa To Finland
Depends on the bird. If you're a falcon, it's not that effortless. They typically have narrow, sharply curved wings that give them speed and agility but not much gliding ability. They have to flap relatively hard to get lift. If you want effortless, you either need a broad fan of feathers that catches upward thermal currents (eagles, vultures), or an extremely long, thin and straight wing that keeps you up pretty much indefinitely as long as there's a strong wind blowing (albatrosses).
