Every now and then, we hear about funny architectural fails where lack of taste meets poor aesthetics and greets atrocious execution. Check out our previous features with such examples here, here, and here.
But way more rarely do we hear news about impressive architecture, time-defying buildings, and incredible structures. This is because it’s way more difficult to create an architectural wonder that reflects our environment, values, history, artistic sensibility, and many other aspects of our daily life.
Luckily, there is this corner of Reddit that collects “the beautiful impossibilities that we want to live in” and shares them with its 1.3M members. The subreddit is dedicated to high-quality photographs of some of the most impressive, conceptual, and historical buildings on our planet. So pull your seat closer and scroll down! After you’re done, be sure to share part 1 of the article.

Preserved Edo Period Neighborhood In Japan
Takayama, about five hours by train from Tokyo. It's wonderful. Will never forget a little store that made their own soy sauce. (Because I was the idiot who thought, "You can actually MAKE soy sauce?")
Yes? I was able to visit this town over 20 years ago. The small towns in Japan are very magical.
Load More Replies...This probably the Nakasendo, the old road which connected Kyoto and Edo (Tokyo). In its center, in the Kisoji area, it is crossing through highly preserved villages like Magome and Tsumago. Those places were isolated and poor, so they did not modernize in the 20th century. Beautiful places to visit and hike in-between.
It's kinda funny in a way how a poor town couldn't modernized but yet it became beautiful more then majority of modern buildings
Load More Replies...Little buildings made of wood and very close together. No wonder fire was a constant worry. Very beautiful, though!
The buildings look like they are all black; is that from the practice of charring wood to help preserve it? (I had read about it here on BP because a young woman had DIYd her home and used this technique for the outside of it. It was the size and shape of a shipping container, and there were pictures of her charring it inside when the weather was bad. It's called either Shou Sugi Ban or Yakisugi. Sorry for the necrobump, I was just wondering!
Persian Mosque
I'm wondering how much of this is tile work and how much is paint or whatever other methods they would have used in those days...
Spellbinding Bookstore In Chengdu, Sichuan, China
Most of the "books" you see here are not real. It is a specially-designed wallpaper.
That makes sense since those shelves are not accessible, only lower ones are.

Florida even worse. Math books were censored, 42 kinds of them. Oh by the way, Florida censored yearbooks too

Yep. The fact that you couldn't actually *reach* many of those books would drive me nuts.

“We’re fascinated by architecturally unique buildings because we live in a world where most goods are standardized and mass-produced—including the structures we inhabit,” Lisa Yaszek, a Regents Professor of Science Fiction Studies at Georgia Tech, told Bored Panda. Yaszek researches and teaches science fiction as a global language crossing centuries, continents, and cultures, and was happy to share some insights about architectural wonders with our readers.
According to Yaszek, “modern buildings depend on modular construction and prefabricated design, Western architectural trends that date back to the 1600s, when Parliament created the first modern building codes after the great fire of London in 1666 and when colonial settlers in America demanded homes built with English construction methods.”
Ukraine - Lviv, Staircase In The House Of Scientists
Boy, trolls must be desperate to comment on a site like Bored Panda. Do they get paid by the word?
As Wikipedia says, "A House of Scientists was an independent form of uniting workers from scientific institutions and higher schools established in various cities initialing during Soviet era." This very building now belongs to regional science wokers' trade union organization, but various houses/clubs/palaces of certain profession people used to perform other functions, including social and cultural.

Hans & Gretel Pancake House In Zeewolde, Netherlands
This is not a building but a slide as you can see on the right side. It is part of a playground and belongs to a restaurant. It is nice but not as nice at it looks here. Still we went there often with our kids.
Thank you for the reminder that, on the WWW, not everything you see is real.
Load More Replies...Looks like someone took a drawing out of a children's book and made it into reality.
Hansel and Gretel is a brothers Grimm fairy tale so I am going to assume that either a description of the house was provided or an illustration for the builders to go by.
Load More Replies...It has some nice features inside en this gorgeous playground! I think it's not so well known in Holland
Load More Replies...Kylemore Abbey In The Fog, Connemara, Galway, Ireland
It's pictures like this that explain why Ireland is known as 'The emerald isle.'
Visited here last month and it is such a beautiful place. Not only in the Abbey beautiful but the setting is so picturesque. I could just live there and admire the view every day!
“Today, modular construction based on simple geometry and industrially produced components is used to create everything from houses to public buildings for the simple reason that it is extremely cost-effective,” the professor explained.
Moreover, “by way of contrast, both the very old and the very new, sometimes still conceptual buildings that people share on the ‘beautiful impossibilities we want to live in’ subreddit are anything but standardized boxes designed with cost-effectiveness in mind. Instead, these buildings tend toward the elaborate and surprising, whether that comes in the form of flowing organic lines, strangely abrupt geometries, or dizzying feats of engineering,” Yaszek explained.

Stained Glass Ceiling Hotel - Gran Hotel Ciudad De México, Mexico City
“Similarly,” she argues, “whether they are intricately detailed or severely plain, whether they dazzle the eye with a flurry of gem-like colors or invite it to rest peacefully on expanses of neutral blacks, grass, and whites, these beautiful impossibilities remind us that there are other, perhaps more important, values than efficiency.”
Yaszek explained that “instead, these buildings are literal monuments to human creativity, ingenuity, and perseverance—especially since so many of these architectural marvels were constructed before modern materials, machinery, and in some cases, even before modern math!”
Les Espaces D'abraxas, France
Has anyone been inside one? I look at them and I'm fascinated by how from above you can't really see them but inside I imagine they might be quite dark.
Yes! I saw it and said the same thing. It is in the series, I believe the last movie.
Load More Replies...I looked up interior photos. Not as impressive inside in my opinion. Still a beautiful building though
That looks like something out of a sci-fi movie! it's even more mind-shattering (exceeds just mind-blowing 😁) that it's real!

A Beautiful House Surrounded By Rock And Trees In Hrensko
It was gas works, deliberately built into the rocks to minimise damage to the surrounding town. It is now a restaurant and hotel. I have eaten there.
What is the column to the left of the building? Is it rock or a tree trunk or natural? (As in, no man created it?)
Load More Replies...DIBS...... F*ING DIBS!!!!! Ha according to all childhood rules this is now mine the moment it becomes vacant.... *This might not actually work in the real world but I had to try
The professor believes that it’s no surprise that many of the people who comment on these images compare them to fairy tales and/or science fiction: "these buildings are so outside our everyday experience that we cannot help but think they must be from other times and worlds.”
“Finally, I love how these images bring people together, as viewers pool their knowledge of history, art, and culture to help each other make sense of the wonderful buildings and their origins. Imagine how fun it would be if we could all exchange our ideas about these buildings from inside, while exploring them together,” Yaszek concluded.

Château Frontenac, Quebec City, Canada
Built by British Railroad Barons in Canada. Don't let the name confuse you, they built these hotels all across Canada. It was designed by a guy named Bruce Price and initiated as a government reconstruction project led by Lord Dufferin. History is weird sometimes.
Load More Replies...From the era of railroad tycoons. This place is HUGE. It is visible from almost anywhere in Quebec City and positively looms. It is a very very swanky hotel. We went inside just to have a peep. Pretty sure we couldn't have afforded to do more than breathe in there.
Very beautiful. The whole picture. I would have believed it if they told me this is in Europe
The Frontenac was prominently featured in the K-Drama "Goblin". And thats why you'll see people having their picture taken with the letterbox in the lobby. My daughter and I are big fans of Goblin and stayed there :D

Kailasa Temple In Ellora, India Made From A Single Rock
my brain can't even fathom the skill of architects, construction workers, planners, designers etc making structures from multiple pieces, never mind ones made from a single rock like this! and the fact that it's a very ancient building as well -- they were crazy freaking talented, and creative to be able to accomplish such feats w just their hands, mind and cruder/basic tools. mind: BLOWN
From what i know, it was carved from above. Imagine that

Ellora is such a beautiful word to me. I've no idea it's etymology, it's just such a lovely sound to me, like 'chandelier', 'Hydrangea', flora, and 'lilt'. (If we'd been able to have children, I'd planned to name a daughter 'Flora'.)
Castillo De Colomares In Spain
If you stare right through the middle of it, it looks like someone is opening up a book. The side walls are the hands opening up the book to show you the beautiful picture that lies inside.

Mvrdv's Brand New Housing Complex In Amsterdam, Netherlands
i love this building! it seems odd to me that so many people have a negative reaction to it. if nothing else, it seems that it should appeal to the sense of humor of anyone who has grown up with the ubiquitous "glass tower" aesthetic of post-war international-style architecture. to me, this building tells the story of the future of sustainable architecture growing organically out of the "ruins" of the past, just as bauhaus inspired architecture grew organically out of both the literal and figurative ruins of the second world war. what goes around, comes around!
I can't believe I am your first upvote. I love this as well.

Load More Replies...This has been my favorite museum forever. Each room has a different theme and the gardens and live music go year 'round. There is a great biography of her named "Mrs. Jack" - she was a unique person, so it is a great read! The heist is still painful. Since her will stipulated that the art remain where she put it, there are empty frames where some favorite paintings used to be. It's been 32 years and I still wish the art would be returned. (note to "The Venture Bros." fans - Phantom Limb has the missing Vermeer in his lair!)
It's such a lovely place to spend the day especially during the winter when you can see the snow falling on the windowed ceiling.

The amazing thing is that this is quite new...opened in 2005!!
Load More Replies...Very recent. Cost an absolute fortune, obviously. Politician's vanity project. That money could have been spent more wisely.
Not a political vanity project. It was built by B.A.P.S ( socio spiritual Hindu organization) lead by HDH Pramukh Swami Maharaj to commemorate and enshrine in Stone the works and life of Bhagavan Swaminarayan. The complex houses the main shrine, exhibitions on Vedic history, Baps history, beautiful gardens, and iMax show which covers the sight, sound, and cultures of all parts of India. Through the lens of the travels of Bhagavan Swaminarayan. And it was constructed from donations and dedication from countless volunteers of Baps. You can learn more by going to baps.org where you will find many countless ways Baps contributes to society through spirituality, community service, volunteerism, youth programs, and education. I'm sure after you do a little unbiased research you will find that Baps is the benchmark for how a nonprofit organization should spend money wisely.
Load More Replies...Okay I would like to clarify some things....First of all it's not at all political but made from religious intent and by a religious organization. Secondly as many people are employed in the labor force it's quite beneficial to the people working there to build such large unique and beautiful structures. And it's a very new building!! Apart from the temple it is a very very large area.... It's nothing shown in the picture really...There are other attractions like night laser shows, Prasadalay or a large canteen sort of which we consider as holy food offered to god, we can shop too and much more... And no it's not extremely photoshopped it's true size and colour ✨💖
I'm confused by the picture... The temple looks huge, due to the implied distance away from the camera due to the haze, but then you see the people in relation and it's really not that big...
Oh, it is big alright...and the temple is only one of many, many structures in the complex.

This is in Detroit, Michigan, USA. There's also a Fox Theater in Atlanta, Georgia, USA, which is not quite this elaborate but also isn't that far off, either.
I used to go here all the time when I was young, with my parents and then they remodeled it and one of first performances was the comedian Gallagher with his Sledgomatic and watermelons and everything else he could smash that made a huge mess! My party and I were in the fourth row and fortunately everything was covered in plastic, including us, but it still made a huge mess. I can't believe they allowed him in right after the restoration was finished. We knew what to expect but a lot of people didn't and they were angry and I thought why would spend so much money on someone if you don't who they are and what they do and then get angry because you didn't find out?! It's a beautiful place with a lot of history.
These Fox theaters were part of a chain. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fox_Theatres
Yes a beautiful place. I used to live in Metro Detroit and have been there many times.
Way way back decades ago in my precious youth I dated a sales rep from A&M records and one night they showcased Cheech & Chong at the Fox in Detroit. We all partook (is that a word...??) in that "stuff" that is now legal backstage before, during and after the show. A great time was had by all!

A Cafe In Esfahan, Iran
I asked the same question when I went to Iran - so many depictions of plants, people, and animals, how was this allowed under in an Islamic country? The answer was, "This is Persia, not Arabia. Persian art was around a long time before Islam, and we don't see a conflict. We create beautiful things to glorify god. Come and sit down and have some tea." There's also the influence of Shah Abbas - he opened Persia up to the rest of the world, to the extend that in the 17/18th centuries it was said that "to see Esfahan is to see half the world". He invited the very best in the fields of art, science, medicine, diplomacy, thought, from all over the world, to come to Esfahan, and they brought with them their cultures which were folded into the local scene.

BTW we have so many great castles and palaces (in great condition and for renovation, apart from those which are museums nowadays), that we do not need a next one. Especially, it is in a protected landscape area.

I was just going to say that it looks like an architecture salesman's model.

I love the use of cement. The color of the "lake" in contrast with the cement is gorgeous.

The Central Mosque - Cologne, Germany
Looks like a HQ for villains in a futuristic sci-fi movie or something.
I was roommates with the son of the architect! There is also a documentary about their family, bc they are sort of a dynasty of architects!

What a waste of power, that building is not going to win any Eco awards.

It would be nice if we humans, as a species, would, instead of weapons, would use things like "who has the most creative buildings, whose population has their needs met, or whose country produced the most creative art" as our measuring stick for determining who is best. The headlines could be "Russia, in a bid to take back parts of the Ukrainian nation, stepped up their attack today by achieving food access for 100% of the people. The Ukraine responded with matching Russias offensive, eliminating homelessness in the last 5%, and erecting roadside waystations, allowing all travelers a free place to rest. We will wait for the Russian response".
I love what you've written. I'm sitting here nodding because it would be such a fantastic thing and yet, with the same level of will and effort put into these beautiful buildings, would be simple to do. The complex fiendish plans for war could be used to affect ideas like yours. Other people know this too. So why don't the establishment/politicians/bankers/CEOs/world leaders? What does power and money do that it robs people of their humanity and heart?

How on earth did Angkor Wat NOT made this list!? Walls 1meter solid, and you can keep a ruler to them so straight. It's so old, 12th century, it's the BIGGEST religious monument in the world. Took us three days, (and we don't even like temples that much) The shrines, the infinity, the moats, the delicate work with handmade tools. Sorry for the rant, but Christ the Redeemer makes world lists, and Angkor Wat doesn't. Must be about being well-known only
