Back in 1949, when George Orwell’s 1984 was published, the novel was deemed a depressing masterpiece and prophetic warning. Readers were horrified by the idea that the future might eventually reflect the themes in the book. Nowadays, however, we know all too well how accurate the story has become.

It seems like every single week, news headlines are more and more dystopian. Artificial intelligence becomes increasingly pervasive by the day, and governments around the world appear to be taking steps to remove individual freedoms, rather than expand them. And if you’re interested in seeing some harrowing examples of what’s happening to society, you’ve come to the right place. We visited the "That’s Dystopian" Facebook group and gathered some of their most unsettling posts below. From employees working past the age of 100 to citizens being encouraged to snitch on shoplifters, our lives are starting to feel like we're living in a Black Mirror episode.

From a practical / legal perspective, "surge pricing" is a bad idea. It could lead to false advertising lawsuits as people may have put items in their cart at one price, the price changes, and now they pay more despite the price advertised when they selected the product was lower. It's more in place to reduce the labor required to do the nightly price changes.

Technically it's not much different from gas stations changing their prices while you're pumping or preparing to pump. It does open a lot of opportunities for cheating on both sides, with customers waving phones with AI images ("I took a picture! SEE? It was at $0.01, legit!") and Walmart price gouging ten times a day whenever some sort of rush is expected (end of school day = students and snacks come to mind).

There are degrees of capitalism. It can exist without excessive greed wherever there is the political will to set some boundaries.

I believe the Amazon stores (actual brick-and-mortar grocery shops) have electronic price tags. I've not bought anything there; Mr Other Guest has and apparently you scan the tag when you put the item in your cart so you get it at that price. He loves it; I am suspicious and cynical about it.

And no matter how much they saw they appreciate you it's a load of BS. It's been a while ago that I'd staff mtgs the manager told us about 4 different things that would be coming to us and away from the clinic managers. Each time after the mag I went to my boss and told her that I know how to do that (I'm the only 1 that knew how to do it). She gave it to other people that had to go to classes to learn it. I had also told her that I have trained people in the past. After the last time I just said s***w it, I'm not telling her that I know how to do something unless she asks.

For the most part, technological advancements are a positive thing. It’s amazing that we can use our phones to give us directions while driving, play music whenever we want, provide us with access to all the knowledge in the world, and allow us to keep in touch with people all over the planet. Meanwhile, we need scientists to continue finding cures for diseases and creating new vaccines to keep us safe. But there are certain aspects of technology that feel just a bit dystopian.

People are starting to turn to computers to solve every single problem they have, and life is beginning to feel like a sci-fi novel.

I worked at a market while I was in school. The deli manager used to take the day's unsold fried chicken, put it in foil-lined bags, and then place those in the dumpster on top of clean flattened paper towel and toilet paper boxes. .The owner of the market found out about this and instituted a new policy: chicken was to go directly into the dumpster, and then the day's grease trap matter was to go on top of the chicken, followed by the day's coffee grounds.

Later on in life, I was delivering to a large chain market, and when I arrived at the loading dock the assistant manager was taking bags of bread, slicing them open with a box cutter, and dumping the bread into the filthy dumpster. When I asked him why he was going to all this trouble (even though I already knew the answer) he told me that if people could get bread for free they weren't going to buy bread in the store. As if the poor and the homeless had any money at all to buy any bread anywhere.

While AI can be a helpful tool, IBM warns that there are some potential risks associated with these technologies. First, they note that humans are innately biased, and humans created artificial intelligence. Sometimes, these biases and prejudices are reflected in the technology, so it's important that we don't take everything an AI model spits out as gospel.

At the same time, AI is sometimes used to launch cyberattacks. Voices can be cloned, and identities can be faked to scam people out of money. AI tools can also be used to create convincing phishing schemes to compromise an individual's or an organization’s privacy and security. It’s becoming increasingly challenging to determine what was crafted by AI and what was created by a real person.

Not uncommon. The homeless in the town where I grew up used to commit non-violent misdemeanors & felonies in order to get themselves arrested. They knew they'd get a shower and a shave, some fresh clothes, and a few meals that were far better than what they'd been getting on the streets.

"Fun" fact: In the US, state and federal prisons charge incarcerated persons a "medical co-payment" (yeah, a fee) to see a doctor. Most prisons charge a fee that is equal to or more than a week's "wages". Wages might be between 17-cents and 1.10 per hour. You are supposed to get a medical necessity waiver if you have a chronic condition (heart disease, high blood pressure, HIV-disease, etc) that requires routine medical exams and treatments, but that doesn't always happen. Inmates cannot see a doctor just by asking. They have to convince a guard that they need to see a doctor, and then the guard has to make a recommendation to the infirmary. Moral of the story: don't go to prison if you want to get healthcare, just go to a hospital emergency room. If you are sick, they have to treat you as per EMTALA.

Another major concern that critics of AI cite is the environmental issues. The data centers that AI technologies run on use an incredible amount of water to keep their servers cool. In fact, one study found that just one language processing model emits over 600,000 pounds of carbon dioxide, which is almost 5 times the amount of emissions a car will produce in its lifetime.

It feels a bit dystopian to know that we’re wasting water and polluting the planet, so people can talk to ChatGPT. Meanwhile, a quarter of the world’s population still doesn't have access to clean water.

    The normal is the dystopia.

In 2024, Newsweek reported that a survey of 1,000 Americans found that 26% of men and 14% of women believed they were living in a dystopian society. In fact, one-fifth of Americans said they were living in an even more dystopian society than the one described in Orwell’s 1984. Reasons cited for this were the overturning of Roe v. Wade, shifting gender norms, cancel culture, and more. But today, people might have even more reasons to believe that they're living in a sci-fi story.

Unfortunately, there’s more than one dystopian piece of literature or film that has come eerily close to predicting the future. The Guardian published a piece earlier this month discussing pieces of media that seem to have predicted the future. Neal Stephenson’s 1992 novel Snow Crash, for example, has an immersive virtual reality called the “metaverse,” which requires a headset to access. And we all know that Mark Zuckerberg renamed his company Meta and announced a plan to develop his own “metaverse”.

I'm glad the atheists are doing good things as well, we all should, but if you all think Christian groups haven't installed water systems or helped the people of Africa at all, you are very mistaken. I'm very proud of my cousin who does these mission trips and the organization, God Will Provide, has people around the globe doing things like this EVERY DAY. We all can help, I don't care what your religion or lack thereof is, you can be a good person and contribute to the world if your heart is in the right place. We need more of this.

Some atheists have to put up with questions like what stops them from doing all the ràping and piļlaging they want. The questioners lose their shıt when the atheist informs them that they’re already doing all the nefarious things they want, as in none. Someone should challenge the Christians and ask them how much nastiness they want to engage in but believe their god is preventing them from doing.

I needed a printer, you know just plug it in and print my stuff. Nooo, I needed to register to hp account, subscribe to hp ink so the inks that were pre installed to the printer would work and download an app so the printer can be installed. Hp ink sent more ink for free if i run out within 3 months after install and i did. Used the new inks for two pages worth, then I unsubscribed from the ink service cause it would start to cost monthly soon and the app didn't let me print anymore! "You are not HP ink subscriber, return the ink to pla pla" Like what!? They blocked the usage of the inks I have and want me to go thru the trouble to return the used ones to them?! Stupidest thing I've ever heard of. I tossed them, bought new ink from local store and the fu cking printer printed like 8 high quality color pages after installing them about how HP ink can be found in www.whateverBS.com etc. So now my new store bought inks are 1/6 used before I even used them. Meanwhile, Octavia E. Butler’s 1993 Parable of the Sower and 1998 Parable of the Talents have unsettling similarities to our current age. The stories, which are set in a post-apocalyptic California, describe a wealthy community that has sequestered itself away from the dangers of the world. At the same time, the climate has been destroyed, and the president claims that he will “Make America Great Again”. Sound familiar?

Society doesn’t make sense when you think about it for a moment. People hoarding wealth they don’t need and didn’t earn while people starve. Inheriting money isn’t earning it despite what the rich tell you. If giving children titles they didn’t earn via monarchies didn’t make sense then why does giving children money they didn’t earn make sense? We still operate society based on blood and it only has meaning because we give it meaning.

Everyone knows that it’s impossible to predict the future. But in many regards, at the moment, it does look bleak. Climate change is undeniable, and the gap between the rich and the poor continues to widen. It’s becoming increasingly difficult to avoid using AI, and it’s widely understood that the government is watching and listening to pretty much everything its citizens do. We know that the world can be a scary place nowadays, but if it brings you some comfort to call out just how dystopian it has become, we highly recommend that you do so! You might even want to share your findings with That’s Dystopian on Facebook.

I disagree with this. If I had never had to read a book outside a class, many of which I had never heard or weren't the sort of books I would have personally chosen, there is no way I would have had exposure to the books that shaped my life. As well, the amount of learning about Greek and Roman philosophy and mythology might not have come my way, and definitely the math that they taught in grades 7 to 12 needed time outside class to be worked on, mastered, and used. I very definitely believe in homework and believe it is important.

I was always terrible at maths, and as a kid I never had parents--or any adult--home with me to help with my maths homework. Teachers should not be giving children assignments that they cannot complete without help from an adult. I would come home with awful grades only to be screamed at by my mother, and in school would be made to feel like an idiot because all the other kids got the right answers on their homework.

Studies done on homework have shown it doesn’t help much. It all comes down to home life. Just like the study that showed kids that get breakfast at home do better at school. Yes, the food helped and we should feed kids, but the more important aspect was a functioning household that also served breakfast.

Without homework, kids just go home and play video games and don't learn how to work hard. Actually, even with homework that's what they do. And then their parents complain to their kids' teachers about their kids' bad grades.

Completely agree. Kids already have to spend 8 hours at school, why should they have to do more at home? The only form of homework I can agree with is reading books (but not anything like answering questions about the books). And not to mention that grades seem to be more dependent on, or at least as dependent on, homework than schoolwork. Homework is one of the main reasons I'm suic‍‍‍‍idal, it's such a stupid concept that people try to advocate for with such reasons as "teachers don't have enough time in a school day to teach everything" (that's their fault, not the kids' fault) and "it reenforces what they were taught" (why are you shoving so much information in their heads that they need extra work just to remember it?)

When my workhours end and I go home I don't work anymore. I don't do any work after that I can answer a call from work if they have some question. If I work overtime they pay me for it. It's unlegal to have employees work unpaid overtime.

Some homework is reinforcement. When I was a kid (80/90s), assignments were heaped on us like we didn’t just go to school that day. Schools need to do better to assign any after school work as a collective, not just by teacher or subject.

As if most kids these days would do something better with their time. They'll just doomscroll for 10 hrs a day or play Call of Duty all evening. Better they do something that actually helps them learn.

tbf this has an innocent explanation. The kid doesn't know alexa refers to the device, to them they are just repeating what they heard- like if they were to say please. No understanding of what it means.

This concept has been floated for airplane seating in order to fit more rows of seats in. I can’t imagine the agony it would cause. IMO, airlines need to remove a few rows and they’ll find fewer altercations happen. Shouldn’t reclining seats actually recline and not p**s off the people behind you?

Awful - not just for the poor individual but for their colleagues and customers getting spluttered and snottered all over. Good luck not getting other people sick. I had staff come in to work poorly sometimes. Didn't go down well. I sent them home as I DID NOT want it! They'd get paid anyway. Just makes more people off sick in the end so doesn't make any kind of financial sense for a company really.

Am I living in a different reality when I feel that talking to manager is totally reasonable thing to do before quitting? (putting up a sign about it however, is not). Although in my world you go to talk your manager in any kind of problems, and they really try their best to help and offer solutions. So talking to them is automatic thing to do when you even think of quitting or reducing hours or anything. But it seems that this kind of work culture relying on mutual respect is getting rarer and rarer nowadays around the world.

I can easily imagine a scenario where someone had taken a problem like harrassment to their boss more than once and the boss did nothing, then the employee snapped and quit - but didn't talk to the boss "that time". Oh, wait - that's memory not imagination.

In the UK you can text 999 (911) in an emergency where you're unable to speak. Sensible, right? The catch is that you have to have signed up for the service previously on their app. So you have to know IN ADVANCE if you're likely to have a medical emergency or a home invasion. Idiots.

The 'New and Improved' emergency services promise nicer ambulances, faster response times and better-looking drivers... Sorry, for some reason this just reminded me of the IT Crowd!! There's going to be so many BP'ers saying this is terrible, should be a right. What they don't understand because they only consume social media, it's cheaper than the water you pay for. 7 million people don't have access to clean safe drinking water and now they do. The technology, maintenance, cost of building and yet they still provide cheap clean water to people that didn't have it. Surprised that BP didn't mention this /sarcasm.

I get enough from my roof, as most households do. You have to store enough is all, and have good filtration. Both should be one-off expenses, but greedy b'stards have never seen a subscription model they didn't like!

Another reply to Zig Zag. Yeah in many areas of the US it’s actually illegal to collect the rainwater that runs off your OWN ROOF for your OWN USE. Of course you have to get caught doing so , but the principle remains the same. Say you have a nice house with a nice lawn and want a professional sprinkler company to install a system for you that uses the collected rainwater from your own property. Nope. Can’t do that. Professionally installed and permitted system is going to be hooked up to city water and you are going to PAY for every drop. If you’re handy and good at DIY you might put something together yourself but it’s technically illegal and you’re gonna get busted if you ever try to sell your property.

It’s not as catastrophic as that. You can collect what runs off your roof but the restrictions are for systems that do more than just have your downspouts run into a blue plastic container.

I fully believe that this is why many Americans believe so strongly that poor people "deserve it" because they "don't work hard". Not all - I know Canadians who believe it too - but here's the thing: it's TERRIFYING to acknowledge the reality you describe. One snake bite, one blood clot, even a pregnancy (and abortion is now illegal, of course, in many states), any of these can bankrupt you and make you homeless, on welfare. Sometimes the human brain will do mental gymnastics to avoid a terrifying truth. So "I could never be in that situation" becomes "they aren't trying hard enough to avoid it". I think people in other countries may go through similar mental gymnastics to avoid accepting how easy it is to e.g. lose one's job and run out of Employment Insurance.

If this was submitted to insurance the high cost was used to benefit uninsured or underinsured people who couldn’t pay. It’s called padding the bill. Medical bills are generally negotiable, even if it’s hush hush. I notice there’s a charge of $1400 for therapy and maybe it went toward suggesting he negotiate payment and how to prevent a phobia of snakes in the aftermath.

Westjet, a Canadian airline, recently reversed their decision to add one more row to their aircraft (by taking away more leg room from an already cramped cabin), because of fierce pushback from the public. It's a small victory, but maybe if everyone started pushing back more, these companies wouldn't be so quick to take advantage of their customers.

If you look at how poorly "window seats" line up with the windows anymore you can see how much legroom there used to be on most airlines. Just awful.

They’re not always the best option. In parts of the UK peat bogs were ripped out and trees planted. Guess which was a better carbon sink. You say peat bogs? Yup. Guess what happened when the peat bogs were destroyed. Yup. A big release of carbon, methane, and people sacrifıced hundreds of years ago and thrown into bogs. (I’m kidding about the last one. Maybe.) I can see these used in places where trees aren’t an option because everything is paved. I’d like to see new pavement put in that is permeable to water so it doesn’t all run off, and replacing pavement when it needs repairs.

I caught some on clearance for $9 and bought three because it was the cheapest I'd found it in a long time. So, yeah, nearly $30 for deodorant. And yes, this is US dollars, and in the picture too.

Depends on the country. In the US (my country) shoplifters are cool in my book. In civilized countries that provide for their citizens like a proper government, that becomes a problem.

There’s a difference between big corporations and locally owned small businesses. I also disapprove of the thing where a group of people rush in, grab what they’ve scouted out as good options, and then run out. That seems like a good way for other shoppers to get injured and it’s probably traumatic for the staff. It’s also different because it’s not about a desperate person who needs groceries.

Huh. In my city, people just pick up what they want and walk out because there are no security measures in a grocery store and staff are required not to interfere for their own safety. Yes, kids walk out with cases of beer.

I can't think of a better way to let others know you don't have a healthy set of boundaries. Even if you had the best of intentions, you'd be enabling others down paths of entitlement, power trips, etc. If you did it long enough, coworkers would label you as a kiss-a-, over-achiever, non-player, ..., and they would target you every chance they got. From an ethical standpoint, the issues are even worse. Administrators would have a whole new way to avoid being held accountable for what they were being paid to manage, initial praise for unpaid overtime would likely turn into unfair expectations, etc. The one good thing about a sign like this is that, without a doubt, it would identify that this was an extremely toxic work environment.

The company I worked for would ask people in the more professional positions to work in shipping, physically boxing our products, when we had a large shipment. It made no sense, financially, because my pay was far greater than those working in the warehouse. I was fine with it though - kinda enjoyed the mindless work - but it literally was not my job. That company was crazy.

Swiss internet provider Twifi offered those named 'Twifius/Twifia' to "Simply upload a photo of your child's civil birth certificate. After verification, Twifi will give you 18 years of free internet." The parents, who have used it as the girl's second middle name, say they will put the money they would otherwise have spent on WiFi into a savings account for their daughter, hoping she will be able to learn to drive and buy a car when she turns 18.

Most countries across Europe have similar TV licencing fees. It's not quite enforced the same way in different places though - I don't think I've ever paid the French one, but the Swiss are rigorous about it. And even a computer or smartphone will make you liable, not just an actual dedicated TV set.

You have to check a box claiming you don't own a TV on your tax return in France, otherwise it is automatically deduced. And they do do random verifications if you do check that box. It is totally normal though to pay this tax, as at least half of TV and radio stations are public domain so are practically AD free and politically non biased

You only need to pay it if you watch live broadcasts regardless of device. Now that streaming services and YouTube show live broadcasts, you have to have a TV licence to watch those and it can catch people out. If you don't watch live TV, you do not need a licence.

£175/year and it's one per household. As someone above says, it's not mandatory. So if you just watched say netflix and prime you wouldn't need one.

And it got worse, if you made your TV forget the BBC channels you didn't need a licence, now it's any live TV on any platform. We are now paying for the ageing transmitters. And the ad-free BBC has lots of ads for it's own content.

In the eighties my family also paid a monthly fee for TV. My grandma told me that in the fifties, there was a monthly radio fee. Now, there is no "TV fee", but one has to pay if they want to watch anything on the telly, as every channel is digital.

Exactly. And those useless "hotlines" are a joke. No amount of lying to a caller can fix structural issues. Ask me how I know.

That's about as horrible as this terrible pill that interrupts automatically my brain function when my brain wants to have a perfectly natural epileptic seizure. Has any of you clowns even SEEN someone with a severe depression?
