Back in 1949, when George Orwell’s 1984 was published, the novel was deemed a depressing masterpiece and prophetic warning. Readers were horrified by the idea that the future might eventually reflect the themes in the book. Nowadays, however, we know all too well how accurate the story has become.

It seems like every single week, news headlines are more and more dystopian. Artificial intelligence becomes increasingly pervasive by the day, and governments around the world appear to be taking steps to remove individual freedoms, rather than expand them. And if you’re interested in seeing some harrowing examples of what’s happening to society, you’ve come to the right place. We visited the "That’s Dystopian" Facebook group and gathered some of their most unsettling posts below. From employees working past the age of 100 to citizens being encouraged to snitch on shoplifters, our lives are starting to feel like we're living in a Black Mirror episode.

There are degrees of capitalism. It can exist without excessive greed wherever there is the political will to set some boundaries.

And isn't it odd, that the US wants NOTHING to do with Communism which is defined by the government overseeing the methods and means of commercial productivity. As the 'Orange God' is demanding Nvidia and US Steel, pay 'tribute' to the government by allowing him to have final say so over how they run the business?

And no matter how much they saw they appreciate you it's a load of BS. It's been a while ago that I'd staff mtgs the manager told us about 4 different things that would be coming to us and away from the clinic managers. Each time after the mag I went to my boss and told her that I know how to do that (I'm the only 1 that knew how to do it). She gave it to other people that had to go to classes to learn it. I had also told her that I have trained people in the past. After the last time I just said s***w it, I'm not telling her that I know how to do something unless she asks.

The trick is to take on remote work in spare work time. Apparently.

For the most part, technological advancements are a positive thing. It’s amazing that we can use our phones to give us directions while driving, play music whenever we want, provide us with access to all the knowledge in the world, and allow us to keep in touch with people all over the planet. Meanwhile, we need scientists to continue finding cures for diseases and creating new vaccines to keep us safe. But there are certain aspects of technology that feel just a bit dystopian.

People are starting to turn to computers to solve every single problem they have, and life is beginning to feel like a sci-fi novel.

The US has 13 years of universal, free education, more than any European nation. Sixteen states representing half of Americans offer another four years of free education to students solely on the basis of academic performance. (The first nine are Republican-dominated, including Florida.) Many of the top private universities in America offer complete tuition remission to all accepted applicant from middle-income families, including Penn, Princeton, Columbia, Yale, Harvard, MIT, CalTech, Rice, Duke, Stanford and Northwestern. In European nations which offer free university educations, qualification requirements are similar.

I worked at a market while I was in school. The deli manager used to take the day's unsold fried chicken, put it in foil-lined bags, and then place those in the dumpster on top of clean flattened paper towel and toilet paper boxes. .The owner of the market found out about this and instituted a new policy: chicken was to go directly into the dumpster, and then the day's grease trap matter was to go on top of the chicken, followed by the day's coffee grounds.

Later on in life, I was delivering to a large chain market, and when I arrived at the loading dock the assistant manager was taking bags of bread, slicing them open with a box cutter, and dumping the bread into the filthy dumpster. When I asked him why he was going to all this trouble (even though I already knew the answer) he told me that if people could get bread for free they weren't going to buy bread in the store. As if the poor and the homeless had any money at all to buy any bread anywhere.

While AI can be a helpful tool, IBM warns that there are some potential risks associated with these technologies. First, they note that humans are innately biased, and humans created artificial intelligence. Sometimes, these biases and prejudices are reflected in the technology, so it's important that we don't take everything an AI model spits out as gospel.

At the same time, AI is sometimes used to launch cyberattacks. Voices can be cloned, and identities can be faked to scam people out of money. AI tools can also be used to create convincing phishing schemes to compromise an individual's or an organization’s privacy and security. It’s becoming increasingly challenging to determine what was crafted by AI and what was created by a real person.

Another major concern that critics of AI cite is the environmental issues. The data centers that AI technologies run on use an incredible amount of water to keep their servers cool. In fact, one study found that just one language processing model emits over 600,000 pounds of carbon dioxide, which is almost 5 times the amount of emissions a car will produce in its lifetime.

It feels a bit dystopian to know that we’re wasting water and polluting the planet, so people can talk to ChatGPT. Meanwhile, a quarter of the world’s population still doesn't have access to clean water.

Not uncommon. The homeless in the town where I grew up used to commit non-violent misdemeanors & felonies in order to get themselves arrested. They knew they'd get a shower and a shave, some fresh clothes, and a few meals that were far better than what they'd been getting on the streets.

Unfortunately, there’s more than one dystopian piece of literature or film that has come eerily close to predicting the future. The Guardian published a piece earlier this month discussing pieces of media that seem to have predicted the future. Neal Stephenson’s 1992 novel Snow Crash, for example, has an immersive virtual reality called the “metaverse,” which requires a headset to access. And we all know that Mark Zuckerberg renamed his company Meta and announced a plan to develop his own “metaverse”.

That is just high-tech indoctrination. People have lied about reality to feel better about themselves for as long as humans have existed. Others saw this and used it to control people. Now we use it to control cows. I would argue the Matrix is more benign to people than we are. Global warming is fake, the whole MAGA movement, free will, God: all lies that are dangerous and used just to make us feel better.

Whoever the idiot is that came up with that idea should be stuck in a hospital after all the nurses quit. Mo mother was an LPN for 33 years and had to do extra training after about 10 years to be able to give meds.

My daughter is a new employee for a company that gets business by providing other companies IT customer support by real people who speak English very well. She said they're already replacing them outside of business hours with AI. I don't know how anybody is going to be able to get entry-level positions soon.

Imagina a world where there was less work and more free time to do fun things. AI without capitalism could achieve that.

Meanwhile, Octavia E. Butler’s 1993 Parable of the Sower and 1998 Parable of the Talents have unsettling similarities to our current age. The stories, which are set in a post-apocalyptic California, describe a wealthy community that has sequestered itself away from the dangers of the world. At the same time, the climate has been destroyed, and the president claims that he will “Make America Great Again”. Sound familiar?

Society doesn’t make sense when you think about it for a moment. People hoarding wealth they don’t need and didn’t earn while people starve. Inheriting money isn’t earning it despite what the rich tell you. If giving children titles they didn’t earn via monarchies didn’t make sense then why does giving children money they didn’t earn make sense? We still operate society based on blood and it only has meaning because we give it meaning.

    Welcome to the New World.....................

Everyone knows that it’s impossible to predict the future. But in many regards, at the moment, it does look bleak. Climate change is undeniable, and the gap between the rich and the poor continues to widen. It’s becoming increasingly difficult to avoid using AI, and it’s widely understood that the government is watching and listening to pretty much everything its citizens do. We know that the world can be a scary place nowadays, but if it brings you some comfort to call out just how dystopian it has become, we highly recommend that you do so! You might even want to share your findings with That’s Dystopian on Facebook.

I disagree with this. If I had never had to read a book outside a class, many of which I had never heard or weren't the sort of books I would have personally chosen, there is no way I would have had exposure to the books that shaped my life. As well, the amount of learning about Greek and Roman philosophy and mythology might not have come my way, and definitely the math that they taught in grades 7 to 12 needed time outside class to be worked on, mastered, and used. I very definitely believe in homework and believe it is important.

I was always terrible at maths, and as a kid I never had parents--or any adult--home with me to help with my maths homework. Teachers should not be giving children assignments that they cannot complete without help from an adult. I would come home with awful grades only to be screamed at by my mother, and in school would be made to feel like an idiot because all the other kids got the right answers on their homework.

Without homework, kids just go home and play video games and don't learn how to work hard. Actually, even with homework that's what they do. And then their parents complain to their kids' teachers about their kids' bad grades.

Studies done on homework have shown it doesn’t help much. It all comes down to home life. Just like the study that showed kids that get breakfast at home do better at school. Yes, the food helped and we should feed kids, but the more important aspect was a functioning household that also served breakfast.

In 2024 I ended up in hospital with heart failure and atrial fibrillation. Three days later I was discharged following numerous tests and treatment, including a transfer to another hospital via emergency ambulance with two paramedics, and 28 days supply of 6 different medications. Total cost was £22.50 for parking.

Westjet, a Canadian airline, recently reversed their decision to add one more row to their aircraft (by taking away more leg room from an already cramped cabin), because of fierce pushback from the public. It's a small victory, but maybe we if everyone started pushing back more, these companies wouldn't be so quick to take advantage of their customers.

Most countries across Europe have similar TV licencing fees. It's not quite enforced the same way in different places though - I don't think I've ever paid the French one, but the Swiss are rigorous about it. And even a computer or smartphone will make you liable, not just an actual dedicated TV set.

You have to check a box claiming you don't own a TV on your tax return in France, otherwise it is automatically deduced. And they do do random verifications if you do check that box. It is totally normal though to pay this tax, as at least half of TV and radio stations are public domain so are practically AD free and politically non biased

No we don't. We pay a yearly fee if we watch the state television channels. It's voluntary. Other countries FORCE payments of state broadcasting via taxes. I know which I prefer!

You only need to pay it if you watch live broadcasts regardless of device. Now that streaming services and YouTube show live broadcasts, you have to have a TV licence to watch those and it can catch people out. If you don't watch live TV, you do not need a licence.

£175/year and it's one per household. As someone above says, it's not mandatory. So if you just watched say netflix and prime you wouldn't need one.

I can't think of a better way to let others know you don't have a healthy set of boundaries. Even if you had the best of intentions, you'd be enabling others down paths of entitlement, power trips, etc. If you did it long enough, coworkers would label you as a kiss-a-, over-achiever, non-player, ..., and they would target you every chance they got. From an ethical standpoint, the issues are even worse. Administrators would have a whole new way to avoid being held accountable for what they were being paid to manage, initial praise for unpaid overtime would likely turn into unfair expectations, etc. The one good thing about a sign like this is that, without a doubt, it would identify that this was an extremely toxic work environment.

The company I worked for would ask people in the more professional positions to work in shipping, physically boxing our products, when we had a large shipment. It made no sense, financially, because my pay was far greater than those working in the warehouse. I was fine with it though - kinda enjoyed the mindless work - but it literally was not my job. It's that BP glitch that they have been taking so long to fix where random comments are being hidden, sometimes receiving a minus point, and can't be responded to. IF they are ever going to fix it - it's been a week, and that's an awful long time for an entire website to be this messed up. At my school, the teachers decided to unionize. Didn't go with a national or state organization, just used a lawyer. All benefits were wiped (tuition reimbursement, wellness bonus, etc), replaced with less effective insurance at a higher cost, and I have not had a raise in 3 years based on the new pay scale (I'm 5 years from retirement!). Utterly slaughtered!

That's probably because you *didn't* go with a recognised organisation. There's no "strength in numbers" if there are no numbers. Whoever came up with the idea of "just use a lawyer" is a total d***e (this wasn't the idea of the school was it?) as that's not how it works. [Edit: seriously, the word d-unce now? Or is writing stuff on BP akin to rolling unmarked dice in the dark? Ought to name and shame the f*****t advertisers that are cool with taking and monetising content from other sites, but "oh my, this person said dünce, wah", SMFH.] [Edit 2: dünce, no, f*****t, yes, I give up. 🤷🏻‍♀️]

It's full of garbage, it's advertising pr*stitutes, it's covered in graffitti, it has a QR code for some reason, it's filthy, but it looks classy on the outside if you don't look too closely. Perfectly sums up London.
