No matter where you live in the Northern Hemisphere, you've probably experienced some extremely hot weather this summer already. Europe saw unusually high temperatures exceeding 104°F (40°C), and a late-June heatwave in the central and eastern parts of the U.S. brought record temperatures as well.

Extremely hot weather brings many problems and worries, but it can also cause some hilarious mishaps or inspire people to get creative. We collected the most interesting predicaments people found themselves in during this year's heatwaves and present them to you here.

Sources predict that the U.S., the UK, and Western Europe might be experiencing more heatwaves this summer, so, maybe you'll get some inspiration for a sun-cooked steak or a DIY air conditioner as you scroll?

Centuries from now archeologists are going to find the remnants of these hay pillars and are going to surmise that they were placed there with great care by druids because for 10 minutes on one particular day of the year, the shadows point to a newly-discovered sacred hill. (Truly, I love this for the cows. Brilliant!)

I heard about a farmer who applied for permission to build a shelter in his field, for his horses. It was denied. However, it was allowed to place a removable picnicking set. So he made a giant one and put that in the field.

A couple of things #1 For those saying they need to "plant trees" have never had to mow or plow a pasture before. Trying to maneuver around those types of things takes a lot of extra time that farmers can rarely afford, especially for the bigger equipment that most of them had to use. Plus trees are permanent and can not be shifted around. #2 Putting that together took time and a lot of sweat, because hay bales are freaking heavy. So actually stacking them 3 high like that for pillars was a ton of work...Both sides of my family are farmers, ranchers and country people. I'm 48 years old and have spent a lot of time in my life around this type of living.

I’m not saying you’re wrong, so please don’t think I am, I just wanted to say that here in NZ we expect to see trees as shelter on farmland. Farmers have a fencing of a sort around the tree to protect it but still have enough shade area for the animals. Or they might have a shelter belt of trees, which is probably easier to maintain as it’s literally a straight line. 🙂

    Technically, the first heatwaves of 2025 were in Australia in January, since that's the peak summer month in the Southern Hemisphere. Temperatures were as high as 106°F (41°C) in some cities, and the government of Victoria state issued fire bans for most of the region.

    Of course, sudden spikes in temperature feel terrible and disrupt our lives, but experts explain that the worst part of heatwaves is how long they last. For this year's heatwave in Australia, the temperature at night wouldn't drop below 77°F (25°C).

    ADVERTISEMENT

    "Heatwaves are less about how high those peak temperatures are going to get and more about how long the really hot conditions are going to last," senior meteorologist at the Australian Bureau of Meteorology, Miriam Bradbury, explained to The Guardian.

    In May, massive heatwaves hit the U.S. and Canada, and some parts of the two countries are experiencing extreme temperatures again currently. On August 7th, temperatures in Phoenix were at 118°F (47.7°C), setting a record for the highest ever August day in the history of California. Wildfires are also currently devastating the region, and evacuation orders are in place.

    Canada is just coming out of its sweltering heatwave. The temperature in Ottawa has been above 86°F (30°C), although the humidity made it feel like 106°F (41°C). During the June heatwave, the temperatures were as high as 95°F (35.2°C), with the Humidex index reaching 114°F (46°C). It was the fourth time Environment Canada had to issue a warning for Ottawa this summer.

    Heatwaves are extremely dangerous to marine wildlife as well. During its January heatwaves, Australian researchers reported that tens of thousands of fish have perished off northwestern Australia. Ocean temperatures have been so high since September 2024, that by January it was classified as a severe marine heatwave. A similar heat event happened in 2010, when ocean temperatures rose 5°C above average.

    But the 2024/2025 marine heatwave in Western Australia was the worst and most devastating for reefs, as 1,500 km stretches of coral were bleached and destroyed. Scientists say that, as with heatwaves on land, these bleaching events are caused largely by global warming.

    "The key to helping coral reefs survive under climate change is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions," marine scientists say. "Good management of local issues like water quality and overfishing and using interventions developed by marine science to help reefs will also assist."

    My Solution To The Heatwave

    Cooler filled with ice-cold water bottles and fan on top, showing heatwave relief efforts in an industrial setting

    Lemme just start by saying I love my Ryobi fans, lights, and “lifestyle” tools. Anyway, my work van has no AC, as in it was never optioned when they bought it 30 years ago. Every summer, I sweat my back off in my convection oven, I mean, work van. I present you all with my solution! The cooler fan! I’m sure this has been done, but this one is mine. Getting hot? Turn the mister on for a minute and bask in the icy delight. Thirsty? Just flip the lid and grab a drink! I freeze my water bottles, so no need to buy ice. Once in the cooler with a bit of water adde,d they stay cold the whole day. I love this little fan.

    If you're perspiring, a fan's breeze works bc it evaporates the moisture making you feel cooler. Having a misting bottle that you can spray on yourself periodically is your best bet to get the most out of your fan.

    That's a failed seam. The seemer on that canning line is failing. I've seen that one before. If the can was seamed properly the punt on the bottom of the can would distend before the seam failed.

    Failed seam or not, you should generally avoid leaving cans in your car when it's beyond 100. Definitely beyond 110. I USED to keep a 24-pack of pop in my car, but then I moved to Oklahoma and now It never fails that if I leave a case in there and the temperature is 110 or more, at least one of those cans is no longer a can.

    And you don't have to be standing outside in the sun during midday to experience the negative impact of unusually high temperatures. It can creep up on us in different ways.

    For one, it disrupts our sleep cycles. If the temperature at night doesn't drop below, say, 77°F (25°C), our core body temperature rises, we sweat, and we can't fall asleep because of the discomfort. We spend less time in the slow-wave and REM sleep stages, resulting in poor-quality sleep.

    Sweating is a good sign that our bodies are cooling themselves down. Yet, in humid climates, that can seem deceptive. Humidity stops our sweat from evaporating, thus preventing us from cooling down. The University of New South Wales climate scientist Sarah Perkins-Kirkpatrick says that hot and humid days are the most dangerous. "If it's hot and humid, your body cannot cope."

    I used to live in Arizona, currently in Hawaii. Both locations the heat gets up there and both residences have s**t as far as power grids go and had numerous power outages. I feel for this person, but cautionary tale because DO NOT OPEN THE FRIDGE OR FREEZER during an outage. As long as there isn't a natural disaster, it will get back on. Sure might be hours, but all that food would still be good if you don't open it for any reason. Eat pantry food.

    1. Stay hydrated;
    2. Have an air conditioner, an air fan, or go spend time at public libraries, museums, or shopping malls;
    3. Cover windows with shades, reflectors, or drapes;
    4. Wear light, loose clothing;

    7. And don't forget to take care of your pets: give them plenty of water, provide cooling mats, and avoid walks on apshalt and very dark pavement.

    Good. I can't believe those windshield-mounted phone holders are legal anyway. I work at a school, and at pick up and drop off I see so many people driving -- in a school parking lot with kids running around -- and texting with these f*****g things. If I see it a lot there, in that situation, I must conclude that out on the road it's nonstop. Ban these!

    No, you absolute clod. They're not designed to allow you to text and drive, they're designed to allow you to use your phone like a mounted GPS. You think they're distracted now? Wait till they have to look down at their phone to glance at the map. You don't remove one thing that makes driving safer for the majority of user just because some people are using it in an unsafe manner.

    that's not from the heat. They use polyurethane in a spray gun. That stuff doesn't melt. Goes brittle or dries out, but doesn't go soft in the heat. Probably badly manufacturered.

    This happened to a rug in my hall. It is in an area of high footfall. The good news is if you put the rug back down the part that's adhered to the floor acts as an anti-slip coating. If you want the backing removed from the floor, take a sharp blade to it. It won't damage the tiles, but will remove the coating.

    Sorry to say so, where I live there is absolute zero reason to drive oversized vehicles like this. They are the pride and joy of their owners, who need 4 spots to park their ego and only feel seen when revving their engines. They do not fit on our narrow roads, so they bully everybody out of the way, coming barreling down the road. It is only a tiny fraction, but these vehicles add to the problem.

Can't leave sun lotion or any first aid (the adhesive melts and latex goes hard). You can leave your fries in the car to run in a store and they will still be hot when you get back though.

    I remember one awards night, when my sister was in high school. She was receiving an award so we had to be there, at least until then. It was about 35c and the hall didn't have air conditioning, just a couple of pedestal fans for a gathering of about 100 people. It was bad I couldn't concentrate on what all the other awards were, I just kept checking the program to see when we would be able to leave. The principal's speech, which was always long, felt like it went on for days. As soon as that happened, my dad, brother and I burst out of the hall. Thankfully we had brought two cars, because my mum and sister chose to stay until the end of the ceremony.

    Just for kicks, I looked up the school. There are literally no shaded areas where a group of people could be. I get that OP is concerned with the heat, but other than changing the time, the place can't really be adjusted. Time is also pretty typical for elementary graduation.

    I don't know about that place in particular, but hereabouts there are sunshades you can rent or even buy, easily attached to walls or pillars. A few years back I was at a birthday where people put up an old parachute to cover the courtyard where the party took place.

    When I graduated in 79 ours was on the football field in mid June. It's not fun here in NC either in the summer especially when you add the humidity. Some people had sunburn from practice in the middle of the day. I don't know when they changed it but they use the Dean Dome in Chapel Hill for lots of schools in the area.

    Given that the school is in the Philippines, I expect that this person doesn't speak English as a first language, and so people shouldn't be mean about it.

    Why do people cover the inside? If anything, shading the glass and covering the outside makes sense to me.

    Probably because it's much simpler and safer than climbing out the window to accomplish it.

    Firstly, you've laid your turf wrong anyway. Secondly, laid turf wants a lot of water for quite a while, how the heck did you think it was going to survive at all without an outdoor water supply?

    It's not that bad, I can still see plenty of green. My grass (north west France) is nothing but brown. Oh, and don't cut it short if a heatwave is forecast, there's no way for it to trap any humidity when it's short so it'll die back pretty much instantly. Longer grass fares better (but even that has its limits).

    I find the supermarket-made bread (like this one) goes mouldier quicker here than other bread. I think it's because they part-bake it as opposed to it being loaded with preservatives (store-bought pre-packaged) or it being cooked on-site (bakeries), but not sure. Either way, mouldy bread is depressing.

    I hate it, but I have to keep my non-preservative bread in the frig. It goes bad quickly because the AC isn't efficient enough to make it to the kitchen.

    To be fair, they do do best in heat, but it's like Earonn says: Mold doesn't pop up that quickly unless the bread was bad the moment they bought it. Well, had fungus spores or w/e. Not sure if that counts as bad, but it's not pleasant for the poor bread.
