Whether it’s fear, disgust, or shock, some things captivate our attention despite eliciting negative emotions. Take something disgusting, for instance. Food covered in mold, human guts spilling out in a horror movie, whatever you find to be your personal hell. One would assume it’s natural to try to avoid or at least look away from it, don’t you think?

Well, not necessarily. There’s a scientific explanation of why we are often engrossed in something gross. Moreover, we might even find looking at it somewhat enjoyable. That is likely one of the reasons the subreddit ‘Make Me Suffer’ was created.

With a description reading “If it hurts to look at, post it”, it’s home to pictures of some of the most horrendous things, from unfortunate medical conditions to way too many spiders. Scroll down if you want to test how enjoyable viewing such images actually is. Some can get pretty disgusting, though. Don’t say we haven’t warned you.

The Conversation revealed that the reason we are often enthralled with something repulsive lies in the early stages of human evolution. It is believed that disgust originally mostly concerned food and helped people evaluate when it has become a source of danger. Its pungent smell or off-putting appearance let them know it was better not to touch it.

That is why people learned to pay attention to it. And eventually, certain things that seemed disgusting became captivating as well. In addition to that, viewing certain abhorrent things became somewhat satisfying due to the human tendency of enjoying constraint risks, also known as benign masochism.

When it comes to disgust, it’s not only the palpable things that repel us. Similarly to safeguarding ourselves from physical danger, we tend to save ourselves from what we find morally alarming as well.

The neuroscientist Aditi Subramaniam covered this idea in Psychology Today. “Indeed, there is considerable overlap in the brain regions that govern both 'core' disgust and moral disgust,” she wrote. “When something provokes core disgust, our reaction is to get our bodies as far away from it as possible, to minimize the chances of contamination or infection. Similarly, scientists have suggested that when something disgusts us on a moral level, we tend to want to protect our 'souls' from contamination by staying away.”

The online world is an inexhaustible source for those who enjoy viewing rather gruesome content. The ‘Make Me Suffer’ subreddit alone has gathered over a million members since its creation in 2018. And that’s just one example.

Unsurprisingly, such content as well as some horrific trends have attracted plenty of attention from the online community, whether it’s videos of people popping pimples, eating something gross, or something else completely.

I also have one of these. These teeth don't come out on their own, so surgery has to be had to expose it. Then the dentist attaches the chain to the tooth to pull it out and eventually into allignment so braces can be installed. Its anchored to the braces on her front teeth. My anchor is in the back of my mouth. The chain is very annoying but it will get my tooth out of my sinius. She is further along so hers is looser.

    You can, but vast majority of times a limb looks like this it is because of soft tissue damage, severe sprains, strains, and contusions. Majority of breaks do not have this bruising unless it was a crushing break, and you would definitely know if it was, or there was sift tissue damage along with a break. Broken bones do not bleed into the tissue and cause bruising like this. They would have to pierce until the soft tissue, which again, would be unmistakable. . I honestly would be very shocked if the radiologist is wrong, but second opinions never hurt anyone and if you want one you should get one;

My son had a bad sprain like this, went in for x-rays twice because he thought they were wrong about it being not broken at the E.R. He went in to see his personal doctor the next week and was told it is actually less painful and would heal faster if he had broken it. Bad sprains are awful.

Back in the day, when I played football I had a high ankle sprain that turned the bottom half of my leg and foot the deepest colour purple imaginable. It ended half way up my calf in a perfect straight line across. I had to rig up a box under my bedsheets to keep them from resting on the injury because it was so painful.

Yeah, it's a bad sprain. I had a much more swollen and ugly one, and it was not a break. That's gonna turn black in a few days and then slowly fade back to normal after a couple months. Probably be stiff an unable to walk without a limp for a month or two and unable to run for 2 or 3 months after that.

I've had the side of my foot look like that one time after a fall down some stairs. I actually heard a crack, but it turned out to be the sound of my ankle hitting the wood floor. No broken bones after an x-ray though.

As someone who's literally done something resulting in a similar look to the same ankle MANY times, this doesn't mean it's broken. It could be but looking this bad doesn't mean it is. Heck, I have a little three step stairway in the backyard that did a barefoot running jump off of, landed solely on my left heel awkwardly, and it ended having the same color purple as the left picture for weeks.

But it’s not only the disgusting things we can’t seem to look away from; scary material can captivate people’s attention just as well. Take horror movies, for instance. How many times have you seen someone peeping at the screen through their fingers? Chances are, they know something horrifying is about to happen, yet they choose to witness it nevertheless.

According to Frontiers In Psychology, it is related to the build-up and the resolution of suspense. The build-up in horror movies is typically based on negative elements, such as anxiety, stress, or horror. Caused by something atrocious, they emphasize the juxtaposition of the positive effects the resolution of suspense brings.

I once woke up in the morning to a massive ant parade inside my condo. They were going back and forth between my patio door and the kitchen, which was quite a hike for them. On the way out they were each carrying a hunk of cat food. As annoyed as I was I couldn't help but be impressed with their level of organization and endurance. :)

A bad sprain can be much more painful and cause more swelling than a broken bone. It also takes a lot longer to heal.

I had that happen once. Doctor was convince it had to be broken because the bruising was so bad. He actually called after the X-Ray to confirm it was just a sprain (they usually don't call when it's negative). Ice and compression sleeves were my friend. Hope you can rest and let it heal!

I sprang both ankles jumping off the roof onto the trampoline as a kid. Looked like this but much worse. I was convinced they were broke but they healed up after about a month.

I did something similar. The bruise seemed drawn on for how odd it was shaped. Incidentally, looked a lot like this.

You definitely need to get that x-rayed. I know someone whose foot looked like that. They had a cracked bone in their foot and were in a walking cast for a couple of weeks.

Some people who love horror movies are often terrified nevertheless, as fear is not easily manageable. (Readers who have fears related to any of the listed images can attest to that.) Similarly to disgust, it is a survival instinct based on responding to a perceived threat. However, the things we identify as threats differ from person to person. That is why something that’s terrifying to some can evoke no reaction from others.

They can spread it even before you can see it on their skin. My son got it in his first week of day care. Started with a fever, so we left him home with grandma. In the evening we found the first rash. By then, we left grandma out of the care for him. Nevertheless, she also got it. She had a really high fever. My dad didn't, but his hands and feet looked awful for weeks. He even lost a few of his fingernails.

I'm not an entomologist, so don't take my word for it. But it's totally possible these aren't maggots. Flour weevil larvae look a bit like this (I've found some in an old bag of flour hidden in the back of a pantry (look a lot like maggots). Also midge larvae can be found in damp leaf litter, and they look a bit like maggots. Totally possible there isn't something dead, but they sure as hell came from somewhere

yeah, that happened, basically, to my son, but the damage was to his arm/wrist. he sent us a picture; he had migrated his hand to where his pinky was in line with the inner side of his arm. had a steel rod bolted to his arm for more than a couple of months. Bolted....on the outside! that was creepy. massive scar too. He tattooed the date of the accident along the scar.

I'm nearly certain that this shower was lined with melamine-faced "bathroom panels" which are appropriate for the walls of a bathroom, but not a shower enclosure where they would be subject to constant water contact. The pressboard structure would expand and contract at a different rate causing the melamine to split all over, exposing the pressboard part to direct water contact and mold growth.

Hair and makeup. The worst part, it had been there for about an hour and I couldn’t get to it because it was too far in my eyelid, and I had to wait for it to move up on it own so I could pull it out. Super uncomfortable lol

Please, please don't use tap water to wash out the eye. Distilled water or saline solution only for eyes. In an emergency cooled, boiled water can be used. I repeat -*never* tap water. There are amoebas in tap water that will colonise the corneal surface, especially if it is scratched. These amoebas can cause blindness within a very short space of time, and can even cause the eyeball to rupture.

A Wart On My Thumb That Has Resisted All Treatments For Years

A Wart On My Thumb That Has Resisted All Treatments For Years

It's been frozen and mostly fallen off, keeps coming back. Dermatologist has been injecting amino acids into my thumb/nailbed the last few times. Literally one of the worst pains of my life, plus it peels after exposing raw flesh.

A traditional Aboriginal medicine is the needle wattle (Acacia rigens). You take the needle like leaves and stick about 3 or 4 in the wart and repeat for a couple of days. The wart will shrivel up and you will be able to pick the dead skin off and then apply some redgum sap to kill the infection.

My grandma’s wart cure: dab castor oil on it every morning and evening, tape it so no air can get to it at night and put a band-aid on during the day. It’s slow but the wart eventually shrivels up so you can pick it off and never comes back

I had a wart on my index finger that I tried having frozen, burned, chemical treated, scrubbed, and even tried the ductape trick. No dice. I got mad at it and excised it with some corn clippers until all I could see was subcutaneous fat. Removed the dermis all around it. Yes it hurt. The skin grew back with no scar. Please do not construe this as advice.

I had a wart on my foot which caused me immense pain when walking. The dermatologist said I just had to live with it. Thankfully, I went and got a second opinion! My new doctor made me put on the normal ice stuff, then every few weeks she would remove dead skin with a scalpel. Wart has been completely gone for 7 years now and I've been pain free for just as long :)

In recent studies, this method of wart removal was found to be as good as, if not slightly better than, other methods such as cryotherapy and salicylic acid treatment.

I had warts I couldn't get rid of for decades... I got my hpv vax 'late' after it was opened up to everyone under 45(?), and while not the intended effect, it did actually get my body to recognize the warts as an issue and got rid of them. Not entirely sure the mechanism but I'm not alone with it.

I had that problem once when I was 12, I went in after the roots and pulled/cut all those things out with tweezers and nail cutters, it sucked and kinda hurt but it never came back. I still can't eat Jackfruit to this day because it reminds me of the inside of a wart. If you don't kill the roots it will just keep growing back.

This makes me gag. If I didn't clean my brush out after a couple of days, it would look like this as well. However, (as another person had mentioned), she shouldn't brush her hair when it's wet. Get a shower comb if anything. Also, if that's the kind of brush that has the rubbery piece attached to the plastic, it's going to mold, if it hasn't already. I clean my brushes out daily and the shower drain every time I wash my hair. I kind of have to though because my hair goes past my knees so I have to clean my brush and drain frequently.

Get some monistat 7. Yes I know it's vaginal cream but more importantly it's for yeast infections which is athletes foot, jock itch or any other itch in cracks and crevices that might hold moisture. Put it on at night and it will pretty much be gone in the morning...no more itch.

Lol, I did this to my pinky toe. Rummaging in the pantry dropped a can of tomatoes from the top shelf. I looked down at my toe and it was pointing the wrong direction. I hopped to the bathtub with an ice tray and roll of electrical tape. Soaked my toe in ice until it went numb, then popped it back into place (not numb enough, owww). Then tapped my little toe to the toe next to it. I was consulting at a law firm, and had to get special permission to wear sandals because my foot was so swollen it wouldn't fit into shoes.

Amazon River dolphins are creepy enough. But allowing them to mate and reproduce with humans is just morally wrong.

You are joking maybe, but in Brazil we have an urban legend about a pink river dolphin that turns into a human to seduce and impregnate young women. Obviously, this is cover for young ladies that don't want to tell people who the father of their child is.

After the first day of being without power I would have pitched everything in there precisely so this didn't happen. Maybe I would have kept the jarred garlic, that should have still been ok.

I don't bite but I compulsively clip. Sometimes while trimming my cuticles, I shave a bit of nail off the top and this happens: IMG_201808...9a6738.jpg IMG_20180809_122534-64106ce9a6738.jpg

Woof, I feel that. I'm on the autism spectrum and trying to quit SH, but the thing is that cutting is a really effective stim in terms of killing meltdowns. Like, I'm overstimulated and freaking out, (I literally look like a child having a tantrum while doing this, it's embarrassing) and one of the ONLY things that reliably helps is, you guessed it, cutting. But I'm not doing that anymore! So, meltdowns often result in my being covered in bruises from biting and hitting myself. (It's near-impossible to stop the harmful stimming when I'm having a really bad one.) Thankfully my family and I have figured out that deep pressure at the top of my back right below my neck is just as effective, if not more. But that's not always a realistic option, such as when my parents aren't around or we're in public or I'm having a meltdown because I'm fighting with them.

A lot of older gaming boards came with firewire, E-SATA and SPDIF. Firewire and E-SATA are mainly lost in modern boards but SPDIF is still a common feature. My X570 has it and my old Asus sabertooth FX 990 had all three.

I had a friend who put Bailey's Irish Cream in his bota bag to share with friends at the Renaissance Faire. Threw it in the back of his car at the end of the day & forgot about it until the following weekend when he went to refill it. He described the contents as "Bailey's Irish Cottage Cheese."

When you clean it, put closed tongs inside after washing and open them up to keep it open to be able to dry thoroughly. If you can't do this right away, toss it in the freezer to keep mold & bacteria from growing.

Not every dish looks pretty. Guacamole is fairly disgusting looking, but it's delicious. Oatmeal cookies are ugly af, but also delicious. I do have questions, though. Are those tortellini? And please tell me the black specks are cracked black pepper.

Saag paneer looks like baby poo, but it is fantastic. Also it's not tortellini, it's hard boiled eggs. I assumed the black flecks were wild rice, but you might be right
