You Had Me In The First Half
Something's Wrong Here
When I was in university, I had an acting teacher who drilled into us the importance of “Dukes of Hazzard Turns”. I know all of you pandas out there might not get the reference (don’t worry, I didn’t either at first), so I’ll explain what he meant by that. In the 80s sitcom The Dukes of Hazzard, there were many reckless driving scenes where the characters would take abrupt, sharp turns, so anyone watching could have never anticipated where the driver was heading. What my acting teacher wanted to see from us with “Dukes of Hazzard Turns” was sharp contrasts in our characters.
It’s exciting to watch people quickly change their tactics in pursuing their objectives; audiences eat it right up. So I can’t help but think of that acting professor when viewing the photos from the “Hol’up” subreddit. All of these posts definitely have “Dukes of Hazzard Turns” within them. Some of them are surprisingly wholesome, while others get dark very fast. But as readers, we love these sudden plot twists, and we can’t get enough of them.

True Story
It’s no secret that audiences love plot twists. We see them in films like Get Out, Gone Girl, Parasite, Scream and countless other classics. But what is it about these sudden turns that we can’t get enough of? According to Vera Tobin, a researcher at Case Western Reserve University, movies “exploit our natural tendency to anticipate what’s coming next.” So it can be extremely exciting when our expectations are proven wrong by a shocking plot twist and extremely disappointing when we somehow stumble upon a spoiler.
Tobin explains that we all want to have some idea of what we’re getting ourselves into when we read a book or watch a film, so we’re interested in knowing the genre. But the “curse of knowledge” comes into play when we’re worried about something being spoiled. “You only have one opportunity to learn something for the first time,” Tobin writes. “Once you’ve learned it, that knowledge affects what you notice, what you anticipate – and even the limits of your imagination.”

Koalas And Humans Has Almost Similar Fingerprints
Drug busts at unsanctioned raves. When a koala gets Chlamydia, they can't just go to the family vet because the wife will see the copay on the credit card bill and ask what's wrong.
Tobin goes on to explain that plot twists can also do a great job of pulling everything together in a story. “A major part of the pleasure of plot twists, too, comes not from the shock of surprise, but from looking back at the early bits of the narrative in light of the twist,” she notes. “The most satisfying surprises get their power from giving us a fresh, better way of making sense of the material that came before. This is another opportunity for stories to turn the curse of knowledge to their advantage. Once we know the answer to a puzzle, its clues can seem more transparent than they really were. When we revisit early parts of the story in light of that knowledge, well-constructed clues take on new, satisfying significance.”

I like my men like I like my coffee—sliding off the roof of my car as I drive away🙂
Easy Ways To Kill A Husband?
Actually as long as she isn't stupid enough to take her mobile phone when she drives his dead body away. She might just get away with it. 😕
Load More Replies..."We found this body 12 feet underground with a dead animal on top to throw off our hounds. Whatcha think he died of?" "pathology says undiagnosed diabetes" "Really? Ok, case closed then"
If it was undiagnosed diabetes the blood sugar would be ridiculously high. Insulin makes it do the opposite, so I really don't think pathology would conclude that.
Load More Replies...The insulin idea is very true, but my question is, how do you inject insulin under his tongue? Just tell him to say “ah” and he lets you? That part needs to be rethought. An insulin needle is so small that injecting it into his scalp, while he’s sleeping, he won’t feel it and it will be way to difficult to find the nearly invisible mark. But you have to get the fast acting insulin and inject the entire syringe. That will be that. Dead weight is true. It takes 2 nurses, three if he’s a big guy, to wrap in a shroud. Getting him to the car and up into the trunk will also need to be well thought out. Do you know how difficult it is to dig down 12 feet? And you’ve got to get yourself out after you’re done. Dead animal. Where are you going to get one. Kill one to bring with you? They’re going to be looking at you, first thing. You had your car detailed?🧐. If not, they’re going to match the dirt that will be in your car. Nope. This won’t work. Give me time to think. I may have some ideas.
That's too complicated. The easiest way it to inject air into someone's veins. The bubble will travel to the heart, the heart won't be able to compress, then the victim will go into cardiac arrest and by the time they're opened up to see what killed them, the bubbles will have popped and it'd look like a classic case of a heart attack.
Wow. You've thought about this? or are you in the medical field and just happen to know this?
Load More Replies...A lot of this is in the wrong order and why more people get caught. You don't put a dead body in your trunk and then drive around doing all that other stuff. You scout the spot, dig the hole, drive back and get more tools you didn't realize you need to dig a 12 foot hole, place the dead animal near the hole. THEN you get him near the hole and vulnerable on some pretext (surprise camping and bondage play?), do the rest, fill the hole, go home and act surprised that he didn't return home. Emphasis on "/S". If you are seriously considering any of this you are a bad human being.
Yep. That part is backwards. Perhaps they'd assume he was severely hypoglycemic. But not diabetic. And injected insulin comes in several forms, all of it synthetic. His blood sugar would be measured in the normal panel of tests, and detecting it abnormally low, he could be tested for more substances. Synthetic insulin would not show up as naturally produced human insulin.
Load More Replies...You would need a backhoe to dig a hole 12 feet deep. I would imagine that sort of thing would get noticed pretty quickly.
No you don't. But yes if you want to do it easily. I've seen 60 foot holes dug by hand (mines in Kenya) and the well on our family farm (deeper than 12' but not sure how deep) was dug by hand. Again, planning ahead and taking your time. lol
Load More Replies...or you can plant endangered plants over the body so the areas won't be disturbed
Yeah, but where would you get the plants? Wouldn’t it cost a lot of money? Wouldn’t someone notice?
Load More Replies...as a diabetic I'm kinda suspecting this is one of us making the suggestion 😂
It’s unlikely as they have got it the wrong way around
Load More Replies...Undiagnosed diabetes?? Pretty sure the problem would be lack of insulin. Also where is this person supposed to get insulin? And if a body is buried in the middle of nowhere covered with a dead body I doubt undiagnosed diabetes is the first thought. - a diabetic
With diabetes body is getting less and less sensitive to insulin despite body making much of it. The more you rise body blood shugar level the more insulin body makes
Load More Replies...Ah, but apparently dogs can smell the difference between a dead human and a dead forest critter.
An insulin injection is subcutaneous, not intravenous, so you don't have to worry about a mark. Additionally, not enough insulin in the blood (leading to too much sugar) would indicate diabetes, not the other way around. There are other indicators that would point them in the right direction...
Yeah, but the cops would look at your location history and go to where he was buried. Then when they used that ground ray thing to detect remains, they'd find it, even with the dead animal on top. Unless you don't know the person, you will be considered a suspect and they'll be on you like white on rice until they nail you or find the guilty party if it isn't you. These kinds of things were much easier before the tech revolution.
I've dug a few holes in my life and 12 feet is definitely out of my league.
This whole idea hinges on the ability to inject insulin UNDER THE TONGUE!! Like, without incapacitating/immobilizing him, AND getting his teeth opened, how is this supposed to happen? Not as well thought as they believe. Plus, cadaver dogs are trained to sniff out human remains only, so if the dog signals on the burial spot, they are going to keep digging until they find the body.
Do you know how long it takes to dig a 12 foot deep hole by the shovel full?
Just a small add...dig the whole first. If not you could be there all night........digging holes
A way to get rid of a body (living or deceased) is to feed it to a large group of pigs. Pigs eat everything... I mean EVERYTHING. Even more than goats. I only learned this TUI from a video about the critters.
Only if they're really, really hungry. You gonna starve some pigs for a while before this ordeal? (That would make you the owner, and if anything's found; the suspect). And there's gonna be leftovers, bones and etc. They're not dandy eaters. You gonna jump in there afterwards to get all the remnants out and change the bedding that's full of blood etc? Good luck with that, those pigs already know how humans taste now. They're also very smart animals. Great plan. Gg. ;)
Load More Replies...The response was well thought out, and the suggestion of burying the body with an animal shows intelligence and maturity. Or perhaps, experience is a better word.
After you have finished the grave plant some endangered species of flora on top, so nobody would dare to touch them.
Or go on a conciliatory cruise, take a romantic midnight walk ...and shove them over the side.
I think you're supposed to put it in the hole standing up, to make it harder to detect, then put the dead animal over it, just sayin'!
This reminds me of True Evil by Greg Iles. A wife hires a hit man to kill her husband, and he dies by insulin overdose. I won't spoil the best body part where an injection occurs in the book, but it was pretty entertaining!
Check if the car is untraceable tho, otherwise police will find your little trip
Hit him in the head with a frozen leg of lamb, and prepare it for dinner for the investigation team.
I didn’t even realist that they were talking about the sims until the last part
Sounds like a good plan, but only in theory... because why would anyone go to so much trouble to get rid of a corpse and hide it, if they didn't kill it?
Testing for insulin levels is standard now. Excess insulin in an undiagnosed person makes no sense as they would have little to no insulin in their system rather than high levels. This person is an idiot and will get caught.
This wouldn't work, you'd leave a trace getting the insulin, and you're obviously already connected to the victim.
am still trying to figure out how you can inject someone under their tongue without them seeing what you're up to
You probably didn't hold him under long enough. I've found that 5 minutes works every time.
Tell me you've really thought about how to murder someone without saying you've thought about murder...
Also, when you bury them… don’t bury them in a horizontal hole… bury them in a vertical hole just big enough for the body to slide down into. Drones or Aerial observation generally look for areas of earth that is grave like… a pit is less likely to be discovered. Also… injecting something into a freshly made bruise will also potentially hide an injection site.
Not being picky but they asked for an easy way - the proposed solution sounds like a lot of work.
And dont take your cellphone with you on the drive. Posting for a friend.
After you have buried the body plant an endangered plant on top, the police will have to get permits to dig it up
That dead animal but doesn't work. The dogs only alert to humans. Also, try digging twelve feet alone without experience, no way.
But exactly why you cannot drown him? Looks a lot easier than the insuline and dead animal thing
Do you know how long it takes to dig a 12' deep hole? Without a backhoe?
So many things are wrong with that, I don't know if any of it would even work by anything other than dumb luck.
This would be horrible. How would they get insulin without having diabetes?
it's not hard. Walmart sells it over the counter for $25 a vial, no prescription necessary
Load More Replies...This was absolutely not thought out. They already messed up in the first sentence. First: I'm going to make it look like an accident. Second: I'm going to drag it into nomandsland, risk being seen and disturb the ground, put a redundant decoy on it and hope forensics don't notice a very new and very deep hole with a body in it. It would be more thought out if they injected insulin under the tongue, let them die, the body would be found by someone else and the coroner wouldn't find the insulin mark.
Load More Replies...I don't care if that person is a man or woman, but I want to marry them for being a genius.
But the joy of being surprised doesn’t only come from plot twists in films and books. As this list makes very clear, we can have “Hol’up” moments in our daily lives at any moment, and our brains still love them, even when they’re not scripted. “It’s a strong neuro alert that tells us that something is important about this moment and we have to pay attention,” Tania Luna, the co-author of Surprise: Embrace the Unpredictable and Engineer the Unexpected, told The Takeaway, explaining the “surprise sequence”. “Our cognitive resources are basically hijacked and pulled into the moment. That’s one of the things that’s really uncomfortable for some people, but also exciting for some people because your attention is completely in the moment.”

Modern Problems Require Mordern Solution
And if you’re a person who considers a surprise party to be your worst nightmare, Luna says that it’s possible to become more open to the idea over time. “I think about surprise in two perspectives: Embracing it and engineering it,” she told The Takeaway. “You have to train your brain to be more comfortable accepting surprise, and by that I also mean surprise readiness—being comfortable with uncertainty, ambiguity and change. Especially these days, that’s an incredibly important skill.”

Uh
Even though she’s an expert on surprise now, Luna admits that she wasn’t always a fan. “I hated being surprised—I loved surprising others, but I hated being surprised myself,” she told The Takeaway. “[I hated] the feeling of loss of control and the feeling of vulnerability. As a kid, I had experienced a lot of change and my coping mechanism was to say, ‘I’m in charge. I control everything. Nobody controls me and I can control the world around me.’ I was protecting myself from negative surprises. But what I’ve learned is that I was also keeping out joy, wonder, and emotional intensity.”

I remember asking a question about this to the priest when I was in catechism. It didn't go well. I was put into an empty room to "pray and ask for forgiveness". I came out of that room an atheist. I was 11.
The element of surprise is a very important ingredient in comedy, and many of the people who were part of these conversations shared on Reddit had excellent comedic timing. From coming up with perfect comebacks to wording things in just the right way, these surprising posts went from mundane to hilarious in the blink of an eye. As comedian Dean Lewis explains in his article ‘The Anatomy of a Joke’, “A comedic surprise is a twist without serious repercussions.”

Sick Beat
Everyone probably already knows this, but the reason drummers were included in battalions was for morale, coordination on the battlefield, and signaling to soldiers when to reload and fire, which you might think sounds ridiculous, but back then armies worked in line formations, and muskets were slow-firing weapons, so to maximize firing, one line would open fire while the back line reloads, then the front line would kneel to reload giving the back line chance to fire, and repeat.
