While we do tend to think of memes as a direct product of the internet age, in reality, they are actually older. You may already know the factoid that it was Richard Dawkins who may have coined the term in his 1976 book The Selfish Gene, a quite fighting detail, given the content of this list. It would be over twenty more years before this term was used for internet content.

Setting the name aside, some researchers believe that images and ideas that we would identify as memes have actually been used for centuries. “Memetic communication,” as some researchers call it, is, indeed, very very common for humans in general. If you think about it, an inside joke is basically a verbal meme.

The buckets likely contain sand, water, or some other relatively heavy substance that we can't see in the picture, so the four buckets are heavier than the table top. Their weight is pressing down on the table top, holding it in position.

Given the fact that many online memes follow certain templates, it’s no surprise to see that stock images show up in them all the time. In general, under US law at least, most memes fall under fair use laws, as long as you aren’t trying to sell them. However, there are cases where famous memes have been taken from copyrighted images and then used by a company or organization in a way that is very clearly not fair use

To find the surface area, break the surface into its component polygons - triangle, trapezoid, rectangle, etc. Find the area of each, and add them up. If there's a polygon you don't know the area formula for (or if there is none), choose one vertex and draw all possible diagonals. This will break the polygon into triangles. Then find the areas of those.

Not that difficult, all polygons. And finding the volume is also not particularly difficult with a little bit of school math. If people find that already challenging, I can see why the world is in the state it is and the Kardashians have so much money.

Genetics as we know it did not exist when Darwin did his work. Mendel published his work 6-7 years after "On the origin of the species" (1859) and was ignored as not being relevant to science. His research was "re-discovered" in 1900 by 1 of 3 scientists (arguments over who was first and how much the discovered/just stole from Mendel). A dude named Bateson came up the terms genetics and allele that year based on Mendel's work. It was Fisher in 1919 ( 60 years after "Origin") who published his work proving genetics was related to evolution.

So not just a time traveling machine but also a light speed spaceship. But then if a spaceship travels at the speed of light, how can it see an object to steer around it as they will not be able to see it. And even if you could see something, by the time you could turn the spacecraft, you would have already hit the object.

That's partially true. These tests have their limitations, due to what is attempted to measure, but they're not completely off, but the part they are off, is because they're designed to only measure what can be measured that way. In other words, to be accurate - not complete, but within their limits, accurate -, they need to be incomplete. Bragging about it ... is just as dumb as bragging about how far you can throw a ball, or how fast you can run, or any other arbitrary thing your genetics did equip you well with. The bragging ... well, it doesn't go over well anywhere at all (and shouldn't so), even if these tests were accurate AND complete - bragging itself sucks, hence the ballthrowers and fastrunners.

I allowed them to use both sides of one sheet of standard letter-sized paper. Some students used fine print and brought magnifying glasses. They lost a lot of time trying to read it. A friend of mine told his students they could use one side of a piece of paper and did not specify the size of the sheet.

Code is not nearly as tight as it used to be. Back in the day code was optimized because HD & RAM space mattered. I'm not a programmer, just have observed huge bloat in simple programs over time. Stuff where it's just some simple text program with little or no graphics like a basic calendar with holidays but it used to be 37K and fit on a floppy disk and now for some reason it is 2.8 Gigs. (made up example but I've seen similar IRL)

That's not how velociraptors looked. They were pretty much covered with feathers, and had pretty long feathers hanging from their forearms. There were also only 6 feet long and 2 feet high, - the size of a dog. They still would take you down as a team and tear up your guts with those big-a*s claws, but they would look cute while doing it.

Since when does Uranium produce "clean energy"? Uranium itself doesn't grow on trees, it must be mined. And there is worldwide NO disposal ground deemed so stable, that nuclear waste can be safely stored there for thousands of years to come. Uranium is not safe and eco-friendly!

The uranium part is only true if one ignores the damage done by digging it up, processing it to become useful and once emitting too less to be helping, waste deposit. Some people think about the latter, the first two are totally ignored by everybody praising nuclear energy. This possible, because it happens somewhere far away, so the "First World" can comfortably forget about it.

Only if you die in the exact same location within the hospital in which you were born. Realistically, the best you can hope for is to have had a very low average velocity.

you could still die there. Just because it's not operational doesn't mean the physical x y z coordinates don't still exist. Though to be fair, since the solar system is traveling around the galactic center, even if the earth were back in the same position relative to the sun, it still wouldn't be quite where it was relative to anything else so I guess the point is moot anyway?

That boat probably has an internal volume of several hundreds of litters. According to Archimedes' principle it would create a buoyant force of several hundreds of kilos, and according to Newton's law, that would require a weight of several hundreds of kilos to outbalance that and keep it down. As humans are about the same density of water, the buoyant force on those two would cause them to be very close to virtually neutrally buoyant, and hence they will be nearly weightless when the majority of their bodies are submerged in water. The same goes for the boat, except that it is presumably made of wood that is a little less dense than the water, and hence it should float even if it was full of water. So to put it short, there isn't really anything that can keep that boat down there and it ought to float to the surface and not stay submerged. Infact when constructing a submarine, one of the challenges you face, is to get it heavy enough to sink with all that air inside it.

the 5s^1 is wrong, it should be 5s^2, making it 48, which is Cadmium. if you go off of the incorrect version (5s^1), it would technically be Silver.

    Radhika
    Community Member
1 year ago (edited) Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

Technically, silver should have filled as 5s2 4d9. BUT 4d10 orbital is more stable than 4d9 orbital, so silver just takes one electron from 5s orbital and puts it in 4d orbital. Hence, Silver has 5s1 4d10 outer shell.

It is a pretty common thought but it relies on the basic model of particles being spheres, and electrons orbiting the nucleus. It does not match with Quantum physics theories. Electrons, for example, are more like clouds and do not orbit.

I know the answer to that one. It's in the song. "I bought me a cat" by Aaron Copeland. The lyrics go "I bought me a wife, my wife pleased me. I fed my wife under yonder tree. My wife says, “har-knee, har-knee”, My horse says “Neigh, neigh", My cow says “Moo, moo”, My pig says, “Griffey, griffey”, My hen says, Shimmy shack, shimmy shack”, My goose says, “Quaw, quaw”, My duck says, “Quaa, quaa”, My cat says fiddle eye fee.

Well as Earth and the rest of the Solar system is basically build from the same stuff, there really isn't much here that cannot be found elsewhere in close proximity. So if you have a technology that is advanced enough to get here in the first place, mining a nearby asteroid is probably easier, and you won't have to deal with those pesky humans in the process.

As a microbiologist - tried this and fell over and tore a rotator cuff. There are many more creepy things that these would be ineffective. Just carry hand sanitizer, if it is a phobia - get a handheld kitchen torch - that should kill the germs.

I always gonna say this . I know I will get down voted but the true is I'm that generation than chewed some old gums from beneath the school table. That improves your immunity sistema. Also wearing gloves didn't do nothing, you will you h your face unawared like 200 times a day , gloves carry germs, sanitized hands at the second have germs. You as a microbiologist know that. And yes is a phobia and I respect that but your biota at your body is necessary and will protect you mostly against bad germs . My english isn't too good so this comment in any way is to offend you or nobody :)

I did a calculation of this once. I found that the way to make a nuclear bomb as safe as possible is to immerse it in beer. The bubbles in the beer absorb the pressure waves, the reflection off bubble surfaces stops the optical flash, the hydrogen in the water absorbs the neutrons, and the boiling off of water stops the heat.

Probably not. It looks like that ring is too narrow to reach both poles of the battery at the same time. But if you can connect it, the ring is likely to heat up a lot in a short period of time as the battery can send out quite a bit of current, and the ring has a low resistance. That will be rather unpleasant for that person, after which follows an episode I think will be rather unpleasant for the person holding the battery, I assume.

Try working out how valency allows carbon monoxide CO or the oxides of nitrogen NO, NO2, N2O and NO5. I dare you.

Well, is that really so hard? Just think about those molecule building sets with the balls with holes in them. Nitrogen has two holes, and so does oxygen. So NO can be a double bond between nitrogen and oxygen. NO2 can be a nitrogen single bonded to two oxygen which is also single bonded to each other, so they form a small triangle. Substitude the nitrogen for oxygens and vice versa and you get N2O. Add a chain of 3 oxygen atoms single bonded to each other between the two in NO2 and you get NO5. The only tricky one is CO, where the C has to be content with not being fully fulfilled.

So I had a brain fade moment and had to go google exactly why this wouldn’t work. To anyone who’s brain has also gone on vacation: the reason this doesn’t work is because while the magnet is exerting a force on the iron bar, and therefore the car, the iron bar is also inherently exerting an opposite force on the magnet (and therefore the car). Because of Newton’s third law (the one regarding equal and opposite reactions), the car moves absolutely nowhere

Math (or physics, which is "just applied math") was used as a language deemed to be the most suitable to contact alien life with idea in mind that we had nothing in common, so something universal and "the same everywhere" had to be used. It still is based on our perception of Helium molecule (which most stars are believed to contain) of 2 protons and a link between them. It's not ideal, but it's the best humankind could think of at the time. It's probably best we have even today, but I haven't checked for awhile so correct me if I'm wrong somewhere.

This is not true. There are many other types of eggs than the eggs laid by hens. When an ostrich, peacock, or wren is laying an egg, they don't send out for hen's protein to make the shells for their eggs. They use their own proteins to make their own eggs.

The egg came first. In the "riddle" or whatever you call it, it never states 'chicken egg'. It just says 'egg'. So any prehistoric egg that came befor the species we now know as hens will make the answer to the question a yes. Imo, that is.

Please move to one of the area's of a nuclear disaster then, if it is so safe. We are making large area's of the world uninhabitable for the desire for cheap electricity. Question - there are plenty of plants still in operation - how close to one do you live? and would you support one being built literally in your backyard BTW the waste will be buried there also - speaking of which - what is the life of the waste? what shall we tell future generations of the time bombs buried in the earth? They say the containers will start to deteriorate in a few generations.

Unfortunately, the public is unlikely to ever think that nuclear power is safe after the accidents. The perception has become such that its essentially off the table and that's why they are continuing to be decommissioned even though we are in an energy crisis and the need for electric power is rising.

The difference is all the dangerous byproducts of nuclear power are confined to a small amount of material. The dangerous byproducts of fossil fuels are just dumped everywhere all the time by everyone who uses them and we have been conditioned to believe that's ok.

It's an agar gel needed for separation of proteins. You put your liquid samples into the little pouches on top and by adding an electrical current, the proteins migrate through the gel according to their electrical charge. Thus, creating little bands within the gel and therefore providing information of the sample content.

    John Louis
    Community Member
1 year ago Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

4.31ft is 4 feet 4 inches. That is probably not correct. her left foot looks to be about 8 inches from the cabinet (assuming the floor tiles are 12 inches square) the right foot looks to be about 14 inches. The top of her thighs are touching the cabinet which looks to be about 36 inches. So, the floor, cabinet and her legs form a right triangle. Let's say the base is 12, the adjacent is 36 that means the hypotenuse is about 37 inches. Let's say 38. Now assuming the chart is correct, the upper half of her body is approximately 4.5 phones high. That is 26 inches. Since she is leaning forward let's give her 2 more inches and since her head is tilted to the left let's add an inch. That gives us 37 + 26 + 2 + 1 = 66 inches or five foot six inches tall.
