Doing your job well, but lacking empathy, will only get you so far in your career. Meanwhile, being incredibly empathetic but not having the necessary skills to back up your aspirations is also an issue.
Assuming that you’ve already got the right knowledge and skill set as a medical professional, you still need to make sure that your bedside manner is up to scratch. The good news is that emotional intelligence is something that can be learned through practice.
If the earth was flat, we would be seeing tons of Tik Tok videos of people hanging off the edge.
"That's always been a thing" does not, in any way or form, make it safe or prudent to do. There is always a chance you'd survive a traffic accident, but this doesn't mean you'd go and deliberately crash your car, does it? (even if accidents have "always been a thing")

Meanwhile, according to the Physician Alliance of Connecticut (PACT), no matter how much medicine changes, the one thing that stays stable is that doctors deliver compassionate and patient-focused care.
However, there are challenges. PACT warns that medical professionals can find it hard to pay close attention to every patient due to short appointments, understaffing issues, long work hours, and compassion fatigue.

The naming of the one helps patients to identify with others and gives them access to information about treatment options that may apply to that one but not broadly to all the others.
It's like when people say "women gave birth naturally for millennia before hospital obstetric care, so why do we suddenly need medicalised births?". My guy, have you ever read old-timey maternal mortality stats? Soooo many women and babies died.

I used to do research using rats at a University in the US. One of my professors wondered if results would be different if wild rats, instead of lab breed and raised rats, were used. He set a trap at a local dump and sent a few of the rats to be tested for disease. All the wild rats tested positive for the plague.

- Listen to your patients’ needs attentively
- Make sure that your patients feel knowledgeable about their health
- Ensure that your patients know where to find more sound information about their medical care
- Accept the fact that bedside manner requires practice and is more than just being a nice person
- Intentionally learn more about compassion and empathy
- Use the right language to connect with your patients and build trust
- Focus on the patient during your interaction with them

That rule is usually meant to stop one parent giving permission for cosmetic surgeries or potentially risky procedures, but it can be invoked for other reasons.
“However, both verbal and non-verbal cues can give tremendous insight into symptoms, state of mind, the likelihood of compliance, and any other issues the patient may be reluctant to ask about. Researchers found that it typically takes a doctor only 11 seconds to interrupt a patient, and patients who don’t have more to share only speak for around 6 seconds. That’s why it’s essential to listen to patients and avoid interruption,” PACT explains.
I worked with a postdoc who believed in the literal interpretation of the Bible. This was in an Evolutionary Biology lab.
One of my colleagues kept pestering patients about it is all gods will and they need to find their spirit and sht like that. When people ask about how to take care about their hip after a replacement they do not mean how to go to heaven with it. He just could not answer a question without making god a topic, annoying at best, useless at worst. On the other hand, you might be asked to take part in improv classes so that you learn how to respond to unexpected situations.
The latter can yield some really good results.
I worked vitamins/supplements for two and a half years and died inside a little because we had a homeopathic section. It always made me so sad when older people would come in and tell me that someone on Facebook had told them to purchase a specific homeopathic "medication" that would cure their cold/flu.

How you phrase something can be incredibly important. Changing just one word can have a different impact. As PACT points out, based on one study, medical professionals who asked their patients whether “anything” was wrong were less likely to get new information, compared to those who asked whether “something” else was wrong. Switching that one word “reduced the incidence of unmet medical needs in patients by 75%.”

Interesting, funny and sad. When learning how to break bad news to loved ones, I was taught to use the word "di€d". Using euphemisms such as passed away or didn't make it or lifeless could be confusing and misleading in a moment of severe stress and grief. Next time you watch a TV medical professional tell a family the unthinkable, pay attention to this detail. It's one of those things TV actually gets right
I would actually rather hear “died” than “passed away.”

Well, it’s an intolerance because they lack the enzyme (lactase) to digest it, and so the lactose remains a sugar and feeds the wrong bacteria, but it isn’t an allergy which prompts the immune system to go on the attack. Sometimes, with intolerances you just decide that some food is delicious enough to suffer for the next few days.
1. some cheese are fine 2. there are tablets that help. thanks science!
I once saw a lactose intolerant teammate shotgun three ice cream cones in a row at competition. In her defense she had lactiad and they were really, really good ice cream cones.
When i throw a party nowadays i have to plan food like being in a hospital. Why dont people with serious problems with food dont bring their own food in a tupper. While i am in kitchen and serving as hell they stare at me - ooh i cannot eat this - awaiting me doing whatever i dont know. Can i roast you a dinosaur, or some fern shoots, or some crystalline anywhat. If you have food issues BRING YOUR OWN FOOD!!! I do this too.
Oh hell no. People who do that must not get serious symptoms, because if I get exposed to even a little bit of dairy, I spend an entire day sitting on the toilet with my head over the sink, because both ends are going, and I get hellacious stomach cramps. I can't even imagine ordering four cheese anything. I'd probably die, and I don't think I'm being hyperbolic. Stop doing this to yourselves, folks. It's really bad for your GI system.
I once had a doctor (locum) suggest to me, while removing stiches from the 30cm incision where they'd fitted the metal rods to hold my spine together, that my survival from a near-fatal accident must prove the existence of god. I can't tell you how angry it made me.
And that certain people survive near brushes with death must prove God certainly does not exist.

A devout Christian sees a little old lady with a walker trying to cross the street. He looks to the left, and he looks to the right. There is nobody to witness his good deed, so he walks on without helping. The atheist (or maybe a Samaritan) comes by and helps, because it's the right thing to do. Hugh Laurie is a fantastic actor and a great comedian, but Dr House was a dangerous maniac - he broke an INCREDIBLE number of procedural and ethical rules in that show. Many of those rules were explicitly designed to stop egomaniacs like House doing what they liked because they 'know better'. I loved the show, but five episodes into the first season he should have have been thrown bodily out of the hospital.
There’s a point at which I can’t watch certain types of programmes when this is flouted too much. Just makes it unbelievable for me and takes me out of the programme. One episode of Silent Witness had a care worker at a nursing home being asked what they did with unused medication, e.g. if a resident died. They replied “well, the chemist won’t take them back so we just throw them in the bin”. NO. No, no, no, no. That is so untrue and so unprofessional and dangerous. Many end of life people will be on morphine, where does that end up? If no chemists will take back that unused meds to dispose of them correctly that needs investigating by a professional body. And throwing medicines into the bin? At the very least they’re going to end up leaching into ground at landfill, if local addîcts don’t find out and regularly trawl through to see what they can find. I was so furious with that stupid fücking line.
Load More Replies...I think the show was incredibly well written. We love baddies in fiction, they allow us to explore our darker sides in a safe way. House was a brilliantly complex and twisted character, highlighting the basic goodness of the more ordinary characters around him. I think Mad Men's Don Draper had the same effect: his shade cast light onto the show's real heroes, the mostly female characters who rose to real success.
House was a weird show. Patients would be rushed to the hospital with unexplained fevers and heart problems. House would come in and be like: “Did you check his aśshole for toothpicks?” And the staff would be like “D**n, you’re right!” I love Hugh Laurie though!
There are a lot of shows that, on rewatch, you stop and go... this guy is a MASSIVE d*******g, and the only reason this show was popular is because the actor portraying him is charismatic and can deliver a compelling performance. But now I can't finish rewatching it because I HATE him so much. House, Mal (from Firefly), Walter White (I mean, we knew he was a baddie the first time, but rewatching it is just like.... TAKE THE FRIKKIN PITY JOB OFFER SO YOU CAN HAVE INSURANCE AND NOT BE SUCH A NARCISSIST, WALT), Ross from Friends, Ted from How I Met Your Mother... so many others!!!
I agree a lot with what the person has says. A lot of the people in shows I used to watch many years ago now drive me bananas. Ted from How I Met Your Mother is a bid one.

Instead the extra heat causes the proteins in your body to unfold a bit and makes them way more efficient than otherwise. This increased efficiency of your immune cells allows them to k**l off pathogens far quicker which can aide in a quicker recovery. This is why you should usually let a fever run its course unless it’s too high
This is why you should allow a fever up to 100 degrees without meds. Allow the immune system to do it's job. Over 100, call the Dr and treat

Did they add that if you stay in sweaty pyjamas, be careful about having much moving air around you? It will also make you a little more vulnerable to additional complications, particularly dehydration.

It's always a bit difficult looking calm if your Mum has just changed s*x
My mum was a nurse for about 5 years before she had to quit to be my brother's full time carer (and she had multiple back problems etc). Now after 15-ish years and with ADHD and brain fog from fibromyalgia, I will ask her a medical question and she will often just look at me blankly. Sometimes she will suddenly remember the answer 10 minutes later :) When she had only just left the profession, I used to love having conversations about the things mentioned on my favourite medical show.
PGY is the way we count years of post graduate training for a medical resident. A new graduate is called a PGY-1, a third year resident is a PGY-3, etc. This post is referring to how ridiculously long neurosurgery residency training is.

(unless you're the CEO of an American medical insurance company.) But for reals, to all the docs, nurses, EMTs, orderlies, pathologists, radiologists, specialists, and all y'all, thank you for what you do. I'm sure you've all experienced ungrateful/hostile patients and I just wanted to offer a smol amount of love to offset that <3
