Mine n my bf's anniversary is in a couple days and I requested to go to a fancy restaurant (although that was his plan anyway) so I could dress up and not look out of place. The small towns/villages thing and lack of dates below is because where I live we don't tend to ask someone out on a date. We hook up with them at the pub and then decide if we want to keep seeing each other lol! If you do, you're just straight in a relationship! And if you're still secondary school age it's normally your friends going up to a boy you like and asking them if they want to be so and so's boyfriend!! It's as simple as that lol!
