Do people who hurt animals really call that a hobby? Better yet, do people who don't hurt animals think someone abusing an animal is in anyway called a hobby? I don't understand why this is being listed as a hobby at all?

I agree and would up vote but sometime animal or their habitat must be compromised for solid reasons. For example draining a swap to reduce yellow feed, malaria etc. seems ok. Malicious or unjustified harm ought to be more than a red flag I'm thinking felony time in a small room.

I live in the US. I don’t own a single firearm. No in my family does either. The only people I know who own guns, are hunters. The problem isn’t the responsible gun owners who have legally purchased and registered firearms. It’s the criminals

No open carry allowed in my country. No. No. No. You'd be arrested. Gun licences aren't easy to get, and that's how it should be. School shootings shouldn't even be a thing yet seems they're an every day occurrence in the US. That's just so f****d up.

I used to date a guy who was one. Well actually he didnt just like guns, but any type of weapon. His room was supposedly filled with all types of weapons. It always made me uncomfortable when he would talk about any type of weapon because of how many he had.

I was at a food bank that also helped with bills and I'm waiting to be called when a man walked in. He sat down and there's a gun on his hip. Now guns don't bother me but come in leave it in the car. I said sir I don't have a problem with the gun but it does make me nervous and probably others that you have it in here. He appreciated my saying something and went out and put it in his vehicle. He said he hadn't thought about what it would feel like to others. If you are getting help from a charity leave the gun at home people

Excessive involvement in social media. I don't mean using social media in general, I mean excessive use. Like, when someone's life exists only on and around social media and they spend an unhealthy amount on them and spend their time on what their social media image looks like.

There was this guy who had an entire, HUGE room in his house that was filled to the brim with rows of shelves and cupboards. And upon these shelves there were apparently what seemed like thousands of anime girl statues, glass jars filled with precisely different shades of colorful Lego bricks, and some big bags just lying around stuffed with stuff-I-don’t-know-and-doesn’t-want-to-know-either. The Lego bricks were kinda neat though, but the red flag was that he literally hoarded cats, hamsters and bunnies. These poor animals were just running around, wrecking havoc and leaving poo everywhere and not being cared properly, and he absolutely ignored like it was nothing. It was really damn absurd. The hygiene levels in that house was horrible, he was cruel to his pets, but he managed to keep that room with shelves always in top condition. I heard he later got reported by a neighbor because of animal abuse and hoarding pets he probably had no intention of caring for. (No offense to the people collecting stuff out there, that’s nice. Hoarding pets is not.)

Animal neglect and hoarding by themselves are red flags. If the house is so bad Idaho CPS would take the kids is a red flag. I specify Idaho because they are fluid about a lot of things. Like not requiring electricity in the summer.

Killing animals for entertainment is something I'll never understand. There are some super rich guys organizing periodic huntings in the Carpathians. They explained that this was how they "get together". Every year there are hundreds of wild boars killed (and no, the number of boars is not excessive). Following strong criticism, they decided to move it somewhere else and make it very private.

What if you're culling the ones that need to be gone from sickness or because of overpopulation? And if you use all the parts? I agree if it's just for "kicks", but most hunters I know are very animal loving people that honor the creatures and use everything they can.

Sports Betting. The occasional bet is fine or even a low-key weekly pool, but when they start betting if a team is going to walk counterclockwise under a full moon while wearing away jerseys, that's not a hobby, it's an addiction.

I think some of the concern with betting comes down to how much the person bets too. My husband does like to bet on the sports he watches. He may even bet weekly during certain sports seasons. But he’s betting like $15 on this or maybe even $50 on that if he had a great week of sales. It’s never anything we couldn’t afford to lose and I think it makes watching the games a bit more fun and exciting for him. But I do understand how a big chunk of people don’t keep it under control or become too obsessed with it. So I feel like sports betting can be a hobby for some or an addiction for others. Hopefully, I’m not justifying my hubby’s behavior to make it feel okay! Lol.

You seem to have a rational perspective on what sounds like a harmless hobby. The key detail you said was "It’s never anything we couldn’t afford to lose..." If it ever crosses that line then it's undeniably become an addiction. As long as the money he's betting counts towards his discretionary spending budget, it's not an issue.

Any sign of supporting communism. I lived in the last, darkest years of communism in my country. There was hunger and cold and humiliation, and FEAR. I was taught to distrust people (anyone could be a secret police agent) and never tell anyone that my parents were listening to Radio Free Europe (which was illegal). Minor offense (such as making a joke about the dictator) could get you and your family arrested, tortured and jailed by the secret police.

I would say the problem is one of totalitarianism. I lived in the dark days of a far right fascist country. We had hunger, humiliation, and fear. I was also taught to distrust people (anyone could report you to the military police) and always be careful who you talk to about politics. My father was a journalist, and was thrown in prison. College students and professors were regularly killed by the military for being communists (whether or not they actually were communists, or just against the dictatorship). Dictatorships are the problem, not their chosen economic model.

Sorry, but aren't communism and fascism two different things? Fascism is certainly a problem, but communism as a concept should work in theory. The problem is humans are capitalisitic by nature (zero sum attitude), so the a truly communist society is not achievable without forcing it on people.

I think you must understand the definition of communism as it is, NOT as some totalitarian, fascist, dictatorships want you to believe. They are liars and only want power for themselves. That's NOT communism, no matter what they want you to believe. What you are talking about is the incorrect colloquial use. It's a bogey man. There aren't communist flags, because communism as defined, has never existed. You might want to refine it to collecting flags of fascists (or whatever it is they are). THIS IS scary.

It so sad how much of my life I waisted. Starting to find my identity at first I was so lost. I didn't think the same hear the same. I care so much more and I can speak up for myself and others. Because I hope they aren't implying that about people with no hobbies. Hell most of us don't have time for hobbies. Yes. I also get annoyed by people who have never been to a doctor but tell people they have an anxiety disorder, or adhd, or any other disorder that truly affects people. And they say it because they think they are special in some way and don't realize that everyone experiences anxiety and it isn't unusual to experience depression and a lack of focus occasionally throughout your life. But saying you have these conditions/diseases as a blanket statement with no diagnosis ends up watering down the seriousness that people take it when someone who really does have a condition says it. Anxiety conditions are crippling and embarrassing and life-threatening in some cases and because so many people say they 'have bad anxiety' people now are almost afraid to say it because they know they're going to get an eyeroll from others.

My response is usually "if you haven't seen a doctor about it, then you're not taking it seriously, so why should I?" and that usually shuts down their fake apology.

Here's an issue I have. You have words that can mean a severe disorder, or an every day feeling, such as depression and anxiety. If you tell someone you have an anxiety disorder, their mind goes back the last time they felt anxiety, and perceive it as such. They assume your anxiety feels like their anxiety, and don't understand why you are, "making a big deal of it." We need better education about mental health.

Doll collecting. I'm not talking antiques. I love antiques and we own quite a few porcelain dolls. I'm talking I walked into a guy's house and he had shelves upon shelves of every single doll possible. Porcelain, barbie, baby, cabbage patch, you name it. It wouldn't have creeped me out so much but they were placed around like trophies and he was super defensive of them when I asked. I gestured to ask if I could pick one up and he said "I'd rather you didn't." He seemed like a super nice guy, but all I could think about was those crime shows where a guy kills some kid and keeps a toy as a momento.

This creeps me out, too. There are certain things that will always weird me out when I see adults doing them. Like participating in things like My Little Pony and Hello Kitty. Or adult coloring books. Even adults who are a little too into Disney World freak me out, lol. I love Disney/pixar movies, too, but some people are suuuuper into disney world. There are worse things to be, I know, but it just bothers me when I see adults very serious about these hobbies instead of it just being something occasionally fun or nostalgic.

Collecting Knives (or even swords) is the same as collection dolls or poststamps, the only difference is that you can use them in your daily life,

Pretty sure we were using sticks and dull rocks (for pounding/hammering) before we started flint knapping to make knives. You still make a valid point that knives are certainly one of our oldest tools, but claiming they're "mankind's oldest tool" is an unnecessary stretch.

    #17

I just started dating this guy years ago. He came to pick me up for work. This was the first time I had been in his truck. I opened the door and there was an open beer in the cup holder. I should have said,"No thanks." and got a ride with a coworker. We continue dating and I start noticing he has a drinking problem. I overlook it because I thought it was the one. One day, he explains to me what is to happen should we get pulled over. I "admit" the open container belongs to me. I would never drink in a vehicle so I was perplexed as how I would convince an officer I had been drinking all the while breathing a 0.00 into a breathalyzer.

Having an open beverage container in a moving car is federally illegal, and the driver bears sole responsibility; full stop. Cops make an exception for non alcoholic beverages, but even that is technically against the law. For an open beer, it doesn't matter at all if someone other than the driver claims it's theirs, having it open in the car would result in a suspension of the driver's license. Drinking while driving and conspiring to have you lie to the police to protect them are NOT merely red flags, they are total disqualifiers. Getting in that truck was a stupid, stupid, stupid mistake. Thank you for sharing your mistake so others can learn from it.

And, it may, but doesn’t have, to involve alcohol. I also think it matters if they are doing this on school/work nights or just on weekends too.

I see furries at the Renaissance faires. Some of those masks are impressive. We have one that has about 4 different ones that I've seen. He wore one this year that knocked me off my feet. It was a raven and it was amazing. I've asked if they could help me make an owl. Not all furries are a fetish the ones I've seen are masks feet and hands then a costume of a character. Capt Peebles is an otter pirate wh o carried either a fish or her baby otter (a stuffed one). In her mouth and people absolutely love them.

I'm a cosplayer. Cosplay literally helped save my life, in a time when I was suicidal. I made many friends who are furries, and they are some of the most friendly, kindest and accepting people. Its only on the internet and in TV shows that they get vilified, treated like perverts. Most do it because they love dressing up and interacting with people. Its like Halloween and a party, with the added bonus of people wanting to take your picture and telling you how awesome your costume is. Hating furries simply because its 'popular' or because you saw it on some crappy episode of CSI about how 'weird' they are is much more of a red flag than being one.

In itself, smoking is a habit and/ or addiction. But I have met people who have gone beyond that. Like... smoking pipes because they started collected them and they can talk hours and hours about pipes. A friend I had felt that it matched his goth look (🙄) to have these cigarette tube-thingies and he started collecting them and some were narrow and he had to smoke different brands/types of cigarettes to use the different tubes. Collecting smoking-related items in itself is not bad, imo, but it seemed to make the collecters smoke more than they "needed". Don't know if this is super relevant to the post

I see this as more of a "our home aesthetics are incompatible" rather than a red flag, but I realize that's semantics. It's also worth considering that once a collector starts collecting, it's common for friends and family to gift them items for their collection, so it can snowball pretty quickly.

I live in the USA so I guarantee every country has their own added points taught in school. And I would argue that unless you specialize in that knowledge you likely won't know the details of wars that don't involve your country. Hell depending on your friend group, it might not come up in conversation ever. Tldr: WW1 was supporting political neighbors after an assassination WW2 was Germany trying to rebalance after WW1, a long with other nations, which the rest of the world went, we can't involve yet we are still healing too. Until the Axis pissed off nations who finally got involved. There are many many wars that most of the world does not openly get involved in.

I havea fascination with weaponry, technologies of any kind( Even Military), and martial arts. I want to learn martial arts once I can earn enough. And I would like to learn forging, etc. and make myself some weapons. Would I be a red flag too?

for that person, probably. But I've learned I don't need for everybody to think I'm awesome, just the ones who matter to me. :)

I don’t understand. So, enjoying food/being a foodie? Or eating in excess?

How is liking military a bad sign? It's interesting how some tanks, fighter jets, and other military equipment works.

Some war tanks were actually fake and just made to distract the opposing army.

Eating isn't a hobby, and liking weapons isn't bad as long as they don't have malicious plans to use them or they're obsessed with it.

People who say sorry all the time when it's not sincere.they just use as a excuse for bad behavior.

I've been known to say sorry to a lamppost at 9 in the morning - and I don't drink.

    1. Dicing (as we call it here) / Drift-racing. It means you are either toxic masc or low income or both. 2. Drinking as a hobby, like that's what you do in your spare time. 3. Smoking pot. You're welcome to do it but I won't date you because you'll just be argumentative and argue in circles, and have red eyes most of the time. Speaking from experience. 4. Watching TV as your main hobby. It means you are not able to do anything useful.

Not sure I agree with some of these. Not all spare time has to be sent doing something 'useful'. If someone wants to watch TV or drink on their own time I dont think we should be saying its a red flag because it isn't productive.

Being low income isn't a red flag, what kind of twisted prejudice is that? And looking at these comments you seem pretty argumentative yourself.

Don't understand point 1. Point 3 says nothing about weed. Only that your experience is with argumentative people who also appeared to smoke. And 4 is just bs. Why do I have to do something useful in my free time? Work and chores is already useful enough. Surely those other 3-4 hours can be used to relax. Think the main red flag is yourself and that attitude

Re point 3. Insufficient data but my experience of all 420 people is argumentative and circular. 4. No, read again. I said "MAIN" hobby.

Maybe drift-racing is something different here, but it's a very expensive hobby, so I'm not sure how they could also be low income? Also it's inclusive of all genders? Unless maybe you are talking about the kind where they just have an old car and ruin it on the streets at night?

My best friend is big into drift racing and is trans, as well as being one of the nicest people you'll meet. Definitely NOT the toxic masculinity type. And yes, its very expensive, my friend has spent as much as twenty thousand or more on building cars.

Drift racing looks fun as hell. It seems to be like driving too fast in the snow in an empty parking lot- wheeeeeeeeee.

Regarding #3, if you don't want to date a pot smoker that's your choice, but making generalizations about the personalities traits of pot smokers is asinine., and shows a lack of maturity.

This is so f*****g dumb. Because somebody likes drift-racing it means they are a toxic masc? Shut. Up. By your logic, I can say that if you like knitting then you're a toxic feminist!

So long as they're driving on an actual racetrack I agree with you. Street racing is dumb as hell though. My tennis doubles partner in high school died in a street race, and he just as easily could have killed someone else.

Seems like this one person was in a less than great relationship with a person who did these things and now anything that person did is considered a red flag.

What kind of pot heads does this person hang out with? I’ve literally never met argumentative stoners!
