According to Quinnipiac Poll, an independent, non-partisan public opinion poll, currently 66% of American voters support stricter gun laws, and it's the highest level ever measured. When I was in school fifty years ago we lived in a country town and yes students brought there hunting rifles on gun racks in the back of there pickups. No one ever thought about getting angry at someone and going in and shooting people in school. What are they teaching in school or what is happening to cause any one to want to shoot someone in school ?

In my very own personal opinion (tm), I think we spent more time outside playing in the sun, in smaller towns where more kids played together, spending less time ostracizing others. We were encouraged to include each other and listen to one another, especially in the younger grades. We didn't spend so much time alone with electronics. Teachers were respected (again, in smaller towns) and were able to spend more time with us rather than spending their money to provide supplies. With more time alone, using electronics, some kids become separated. Teachers have fuller classrooms and have less time to get to know their students and are less able to root out the ones who are ostracized. Those who are ostracized find others who are and they feed on each other's loneliness and sadness. And parents are so busy trying to keep financially afloat, they don't always see what their own kids are going through. Again, my personal opinions only... your mileage may vary.

Since then, there have been at least 1,606 mass shootings, with at least 1,829 people killed and 6,447 wounded as of February 2018. In the developed world, these levels of gun violence are a uniquely American problem. Here’s why. America is an exceptional country when it comes to guns. It’s one of the few countries in which the right to bear arms is constitutionally protected. For people who believe the empirical evidence that more guns mean more violence, this contradiction is the source of a lot of frustration. Americans by and large support policies that reduce access to guns. But once these policies are proposed, they’re broadly spun by politicians and pundits into attempts to “take away your guns.” So nothing gets done, and preventable deaths keep occurring.

When I was growing up it was 1/3 less populated then it is now which meant there was less competition. On top of that the work load and the expectations put on the kids today is literally insane. They were teaching my daughter things in high school that I didn't learn until I was in college. Then you add the social media c**p that goes on 24 hrs a day. We would get off the bus and play or watch TV to unwind from whatever stress that day had brought and then have dinner. Kids don't have time to be kids anymore

A kid should never have to worry about such a thing. Yet still, this is really happening. Heart-breaking. I think if I had a child and was in this situation, I couldn't hold up my brave parent face and would have broken down crying, that my baby is thinking about things like this. It even hurts me that a child I do not even know, is thinking about things like this.

Do you play dominoes ? Ok, and one day very soon you won't need your 1st Amendment right. As long as you agree to never post or speak in public, we won't put you in prison. A problem exists, yes. You wouldn't solve a problem by removing the paper that it is written on, would you ? It seems to me these children are not receiving the care and friendship of a healthy community. A healthy community begins with trust; trust in each other and not to tolerate abusiveness from anyone. A healthy community is built upon a foundation of equality, self respect, and respect for others. Without trust, equality, and respect, history shows us that violence will only escalate. Our children need good examples from the adults in our society to stop poisoning the planet with hate, distrust, separation, greed, nuclear weapons, and war. Blaming the children in any of these alleged shootings, solves the problem about as much as making all the guns magically disappear.

Many countries give proper pay and all the teaching supplies to the teachers for free so it is a good idea to move somewhere else if you are a teacher in USA. There are also less gun violence. For example here in Finland there has been only 3 school shootings EVER while in USA there has been 18 school shootings THIS YEAR with 5 shootings that had dead or injured victims...

You have to realize that the people who are fighting for gun rights like this have no care for middle ground. They take it as an attack on them. I for one love my guns. And one day would love to own an AR, or similar system. Why? Because I like to shoot. I like learning about the nuances of different weapons. I enjoy mastering the ability to be on target. It is a fun hobby that I enjoy. At the same time America seems to be acting like a five year with respect to using guns properly. So when you can't respect the privileges, or rights given to you. You lose those rights and privileges. So as much as I want the right to enjoy these weapons. I also want my kids safe in school. I only hope that this type of change would actually fix the problem.

I never understood why teachers use their own money for class supplies and I guess I never will understand it. I get that they love their students and want them to learn, but shelling out your own money is a bridge too far. If I work hard and do what I am supposed to do, my money is for me and me alone. What if I don't want to buy supplies? What if I want a pair of cute shoes I saw in a store window? What would the school do -- and I'm asking a serious question, here -- if the teacher said, I'm not responsible for this. I'm not using my money. You either cough up the money for the supplies or there won't be anything in the classroom. I know there are websites for teachers to get supplies, like Donors Choose, but I don't think you can run a classroom for a whole year on just that.

If you don't then the kids don't get it or they might share something from another teacher. My mother would typically buy things, but they were for enrichment. Not core things like text books, or training materials. These were things she wanted to do with the kids. So she got them to help make class more fun, or more educational in her eyes. Or something she ran out of. Sometimes my friend shells out money again for things his wife wants to do that they think will help. I am sure that some class rooms have a lot less, but we have lived in some pretty low income areas and they had pretty much every thing they needed, but sometimes they needed a little bit more. But nothing like missing chairs or pencils and such.

Same here. It hurts, knowing children even have to go through the drills in case a shooting happens. Let alone when it actually happens. It hurts my soul. And then here (and other places!) people are joking or laughing about something very related to this. I can not comprehend this. Maybe because it does not happen over here. It really hurts. Blaming the republicans' at Fl.? What I have gathered so far on the Shooting: It was a failure to act from the local school and finally to the FBI. The school could have had the student arrested long before the shooting for threating others with a knife (a felony under Fl. Law) but their do not arrest the student policies came first. When informed that the student had threatened to shoot up the school they did nothing about it. The Sheriff deputy’s paid over 30+ visits to his home and didn’t put this guy under a ATF do not sell list. Add the FBI that failure to do squat when reported to them. Once the shooting started, 4 deputies’ fails to go in. Only cower behind their cars until officers from a nearby town came and entered the school with newly arrived officers. Shooter almost got away, but the out of town officer saw a guy who meet the description and stopped him. The Sheriff who is a democrat now says he does a good job and you blame who?

Why do ordinary Americans actually need military grade weapons anyway? You need to go back to basics and look at what was originally deemed safe to own and compare that to the monstrosities that you can get hold of today. I mean what average American needs a ground to air missile launcher? Yet I have no doubt that you could legally get hold of one... That is in no way the spirit of the original bill that allowed basic weapons for protection and work. Those weapons are not what we're talking about anymore. Surely there has to be a limit somewhere?!

Um, actually, you’re wrong. Guns PROTECT all of those venues. Sometimes police, sometimes armed guards with less firearms training than I have. (Retired military, don’t argue with me.) I do not mind giving up my firearm (as much) when I enter an environment protected by armed personnel. That’s all we’re saying should occur at schools. Thank you for making our case for us.

Whereas school shootings have happened several times. I just don't see the validity of your statement. If it is true, then the presence of armed security truly does prevent shootings and you are making a great argument in favor of armed guards are every school.

The term "assault rifle" needs to die. The gun you are referring to is a civilian (mean NON-automatic) version of a military rifle. The main issue people seem to have a problem with is they hold too many bullets but the fact of the matter is, these people who do the shootings carry multiple clips. Semi-auto weapons aren't going anywhere but even if they did, people adapt. Ever seen cowboy action shooting and how fast they can shoot?

Yes, the officer just shot them and no, they weren't dangerous. Castile was in a car with his girlfriend and her four-year-old daughter when he was pulled over by police. Castile disclosed that he was in possession of a legal firearm for which he had a license/permit. The officer fired his gun into the car SEVEN times, hitting Castile 5 times. The girlfriend and child were still in the car. The girlfriend had the presence of mind after the shooting to go live on Facebook and maintain her composure while talking to the cop as her boyfriend lay shot and dying in the seat next to her. The cop was charge with 3 felonies but, surprise!, he was acquitted of all charges.

Of course with today's b******t police you are never going to stop the shooting - their response time will let dozens get shot before they even roll up - and they are so freaked out they kill innocent people all the time. FACT: Mass shootings used to take place NINETY TWO PERCENT OF THE TIME in GUN FREE ZONES!!! That statistic has changed - it's now 98% of all mass shootings take place in "GUN FREE ZONES".

Maybe that's why? There was such expectation with the Hippy generation that, comin' to the '90s and later, Millenials, the elders' got bored and, so, Really, what they mean by, "This generation's so lazy..." Is actually a reflection of THEM getting lazy and remembering their glory days with fondness, but, ya know what, as Time goes by so does our Progress! It may be different, but it's still there! But the problem with my generation is that 'safe spaces' and triggers are a thing. People are getting sensitive to other opinions, and they're coming up with "problems" like "male-privilege" and "rape culture". I don't agree at all with these things. Many people on the left are communist, meaning that they think they are entitled to other people's hard earned money. If that's not lazy and greedy idk what is.

Actually, I was thinking "Logan's Run" a dystopian novel where people were killed after reaching the age of 30. The teens were talking about how the adults weren't listening, and an old person said: "You kid's wanna march, why don't you march your "d*mn fools selves home to bed." That was the beginning of the 'Little War'. By morning politicians in Washington D.C. were hanging from lampposts and police cars were burning in the streets. I remember that line from the novel, and I wondered what could push teenagers to that point? It's been forty years...and now I know.

Australians don't know whether to laugh or cry. We are horrified by what we are hearing. Since gun control was enacted back in the 1990s we have NOT HAD ONE MASS SHOOTING! Domestic shootings have crashed and now, pretty much the only people with illegal guns are the criminals who will get them no matter what we do. Only Australians legally allowed guns are defence force personnel (and not in public) police (in public) farmers (only on their farm) security guards (only on the armoured vehicle) commercial shooters (only in their trucks) sporting shooters (only at the gun club/rifle range). Police here check their gun owners in their own districts every two years and every single licensed gun has to be accounted for and the storage comply with regulations - gun and ammo separately kept.

I can think of 5 reasons of the top of my head why giving teachers guns will cause major conflicts; 1. The teachers will need training 2. What if a kid steals the gun and uses it? 3. What if the teacher or substitute is a murderer? 4. Many parents will pull their kids out if teachers are armed which will cause economic problems 5. Are the teachers supposed use the gun on the shooter? 5.

Here is an unpopular opinion: A) your child will still try to hit people with it. B) your child would think trice to start bashing people as everyone have a stick now. C) your child will STILL bash people, not with a stick, perhaps a stone. You will get free from mass shooting, but then if the real problem that causes a kid to have emotional breakdown until he shot people is not face and solved, it will just happen again, with knife. I still don't understand why are you all not dealing with reducing the stress level or give them a better mental consultation but kept on blaming on the tools.

People are not able to kill each other without a thought for what they have done. That is why Military personnel are trained and conditioned to do it (brainwashed), that is why those trained to do it suffer from PTSD and other trauma after they have killed; we call it stopping the threat and other nice cover up names. Good and bad, is bullshi* grey areas exist, where prevention is better than anyone dying . Let's do the sensible thing and rid ourselves of hate, excuses to kill and the guns that make a select few wealthy.

I don't agree with arming teachers, but I can guarantee if one of them had had a gun they wouldn't have hung around outside in safety while their students were being shot. Time and time again over the last couple of decades teachers have shown us they are willing to put themselves physically between students and a threat, often at the cost of their lives.

I have a much higher opinion of teachers than you do and experience shows teachers willing to stand in harms way to protect students and sacrifice themselves. Ask any of those (that lived) if they'd wished they'd had hand-gun at the time. Tragically that armed guard that was there showed less courage than the average teacher.

That is a terrifying experience. When I was in third grade we had a real lockdown because an armed man who had just robbed a bank like fifty feet away ran onto campus. We stayed in our cubbies for 3 hours. Half of the entire government probably hasn’t been through this situation.

About 3 yrs ago - 92% of all mass shootings took place in "gun free zones" (target areas) and now that number is 98%. Stop the drugs, get metal detectors in schools, train teachers if that is necessary (works in Israel) get those door locks that prevent criminal entrance to the rooms and removes targets from fire lanes outside or in evac routes...

Like everyone HAS TO carry a gun. Like nobody is going to be trained if that happens. What about a simple damn metal detector - can protect banks, courts - anyplace with a crooked politician that probably deserves shooting and wherever "wealth" is piled - but don't do anything for kids. Put them in a "gun free zone" where 98% of all mass shootings now take place. That's a "brilliant" alternative. For the murderers and people behind this thing. A teacher in Utah shot herself in the bathroom by accident in 2014. You can watch Youtube videos of enraged teachers smashing instruments or throwing things at students. I don't trust anybody with a gun in such a tense situation -- even a teacher.

You can purchase semi-automatic assault rifles in Canada legally (including an AR-15), depending on the barrel length they may even fall into the non-restricted category, yet we do not seem to have the same issues as our southern neighbor. One large difference, our gun laws are pretty strict.

Whoever the shooter may be does not care about his life, yours, or mine. Life is pointless to them. It is Highly unlikely a teacher, or anyone with a gun will make them stop, ponder, and start a negotiation on what the best rational next step might be.

I know it can be unpopular. I’m from Brazil, where guns aren’t easily purchased as in USA. I’m against such an easy way to get your hands on powerful guns, but the problem is more deep rooted. The true problem is not the guns. The true problem is that a person have a killing will in his heart. Are we ignoring the fact that someone -wanted- to kill a lot of teenagers? Why? There is more than just guns wrong in United States. There is killings with knives and rocks too. We need to work on creating children that don’t want to kill others. A society that doesn’t let violence grow. Armed or not.

Japan has one of the lowest rates of gun crime in the world. In 2014 there were just six gun deaths, compared to 33,599 in the US. hmmmmmm wonder what could possibly be the explanation for that... oh yeah, Japan has extremely strict gun laws. Including having to attend an all-day class, take a written exam and pass a shooting-range test with a mark of at least 95%, take mental health and drugs tests, have your criminal record checked andhave police look for links to extremist groups. Then check your relatives too, and even your work colleagues. Oh also, did you know that police have the power to deny gun licences, police also have sweeping powers to search and seize weapons. Handguns are also banned outright with only shotguns and air rifles being allowed. The law also has restricted the number of gun shops. In most of Japan's 40 or so prefectures there can be no more than three, and you can only buy fresh cartridges by returning the spent cartridges you bought on your last visit :)

Our kids are showered with violence from birth, and it is glorified in very graphic war movies, video games, even sports. They are put on depressants and other strong medications that often predispose them to worse depressions that end badly. Our militarized police (protectors) are murdering citizens without cause and walking away. Even our TV commercials are often violent and mean. And then, when someone runs amok and shoots up a school, we (the media) make that killer a legend, a counter-culture hero--which is quite appealing to others with warped agendas. These killers should never be referred to by name and their faces should not be splashed across media, but hidden for the shameful creatures that they are. Call them what they are: losers and creeps. Perhaps, then, the idea will be less appealing to others.

Yeah Math, but you know, the problem with child abusers aren’t the daycares, the playground, etc. it’s that they want to sexually abuse them in theirs sick minds. Yet you still want to keep them away from every place children are, right? To protect children from that sick mind.

That teacher will get charged and when in court the prosecutor will argue that he or she had a grudge against the pupil who was shot and that the teacher used the situation to commit a murder...well, the NRA and Republicans are sprouting plenty of s**t, so that scenario sounds about right to me. The fact that the teacher was trying to defend the pupils will be completely lost.

Because the person KNOWS their child? I can easily think of relatives of mine I would not want to be armed, around children or not. My brand new daughter in law is a teacher at a middle school. I wouldn't want her to have to work armed. Teaching middle school is hard enough on its own.

HERE IS WHY....A problem exists, yes. You wouldn't solve a problem by removing the paper that it is written on, would you ? It seems to me these children are not receiving the care and friendship of a healthy community. A healthy community begins with trust; trust in each other and not to tolerate abusiveness from anyone. A healthy community is built upon a foundation of equality, self respect, and respect for others. Without trust, equality, and respect, history shows us that violence will only escalate. Our children need good examples from the adults in our society to stop poisoning the planet with hate, distrust, separation, greed, nuclear weapons, and war. Blaming the children in any of these alleged shootings, solves the problem about as much as making all the guns magically disappear.

I looked up the history of school shootings on record in the US. Who can guess the first ones on file? 18th Century. Difference is that school shootings today can kill almost as many as in an entire century of shootings in the past. Hmmmmm... why do we suppose that is. Not to mention, as society's evolve and mature, and new information is obtained, the laws and regulations surrounding them need to also.

I signed up to be a teacher, not a police officer. It is time for the lawmakers to stop looking how to fill their pockets from the NRA. Arming me won't solve your problem, but banning assault weapons and reopening mental hospitals will. I am sick and tired of everything revolving around money.

My teacher, after the Florida shooting, said this bit of rationality: "If any more Arming Teachers stuff goes through, I'm quitting. My job description does not include taking a bullet for a kid". Don't force this stuff on teachers.

...My sister is a special education teacher in New Mexico and as a family member, I oppose the suggestion that teachers should be given a gun to protect herself or her students. She is not hired to kill people, she is hired to educate people. She should not arm herself because a school should be a safe place for teachers and students. These school shootings are meaningless and the situation is not being handled or being prevented properly by the government. The president's suggestion was very careless and not very well-thought of. Even if he blames the media for the 'fake news', media is a double edged sword and he should not state things that could be taken out of context. That just shows how weak his mind works if he is not careful with the words he says.

Here's an idea - anyone that wants to own a gun must first serve time in the military. Not only would it provide training and structure, it would boost our armed forces exponentially. If you're caught with a gun without having served then you'd be sentenced to serve, rather than jail. Of course we'd have to grandfather in the seniors...

Its a good theory until you, potentially, have half the population suffering from PTSD (assuming that people would actually be sent off to fight as the country is currently 'at war'. Also, the streets would be empty and the economy could suffer from the amount of people going thru military training to own a gun. It could however deter a lot of people from wanting to own a gun. How about instead that anyone who owns a gun has to keep it stored at their gun range?

Jack, I'm afraid that analogy doesn't really hold water. A better one might be, "saying you shoot an AR-15 is like saying you blow your nose with Kleenex". There is nothing special or magical about the AR-15 that makes it more dangerous or scary than other firearms, it is just ubiquitous b/c it is affordable, reliable, easy to maintain, etc.

This week, my 12 year old daughter was witness to the insanity that our SOCIAL PROBLEM here in America has come to. Of all places this was on her SCHOOL BUS. An aggravated teen-aged boy was doing everything possible to get on that bus because he had a problem with one of the students who rode it. Banging loudly on the outside of the bus, cursing and making threats of extreme violence against all bus riders, circling the bus like a predator, his final threat was to get his gun and shoot the young passengers, he turned to run and get said gun, but our quick thinking driver was already in motion, phone in hand, moving the bus to a safer place, while also dialing 911. Three police cars were on the scene in mere minutes, surrounding the troubled youth and restoring safety once again. These children are preschoolers, elementary aged children through high school aged, and they were ALL terrified. My daughter held three kindergarteners on her lap, hugging them close until the crying ended.
