It’s no secret that thrift hunting and secondhand shopping have become super popular in the last few years. From professional resellers to vintage lovers, from budget-savvy shoppers to thrill seekers who love digging up something rare and valuable, it seems like everyone finds something for them.

All the thrift shopping goers have in-depth knowledge of the best destinations to look for cool used things, and Goodwill outlets are no exception. Here, most of the items are placed in large bins rather than hung on a rack or placed on shelves.

In fact, there’s even an online community on Reddit named “Goodwill Bins” which gathers all the Goodwill outlet aficionados and thrift hunters in one place as they get to share the best, craziest, most unusual finds they found in those large blue bins.

Whether you’re an avid thrifter or an online reseller, you are probably familiar with Goodwill retail stores. However, did you know that Goodwill also has another type of store? They’re called Goodwill outlet stores and are also known as Goodwill pay by the pound stores, Goodwill weigh and pay stores, or Goodwill bin stores.

Shopping at Goodwill outlet stores is a rather unique thrift hunting experience. A small handful of items may be sorted and put in bins separately, including clothing; this is an exception rather than a rule. Items are brought out in large blue bins which the shopper will have to sort and dig through themselves in order to find the gems.

I remember I went to goodwill and found 4 Pendleton sets, but they weren’t my size so I left them behind for someone else to find. 2 months later found 8 more but again, not my size, so had to leave them, but someone in our area at the time (near Charlotte, NC) had a REALLY good Pendleton collection they gave up to Goodwill.

At the same time, it’s very likely that as a shopper, you will be competing with many other pickers and thrifters. Usually, the bins are lined up in many rows throughout the store. After a row of bins has been on the floor for a while, a staff member will announce the last call for that row and shortly it will be removed and replaced with more items.

Probably a mom or someone who doesn’t know it’s value. My mom was an “anti pack rat” in that she made us get rid of toys, clothes often because she was terrified of hoarding things and having a cluttered filled house like her mentally ill mother sometimes did, and I KNOW she’s made us get rid of some first edition, near mint cards and other collectibles that are worth thousands at least now. Can’t be bitter over it I guess, but MAN do I hope someone else capitalized on the great finds they must’ve had eventually.

Since most of the items are sold by the pound, there are a couple of things you may do as a shopper to make your checkout easier. Goodwill suggests dividing your cart into the categories shown in the diagram (on this webpage) since these items need to be rung up separately.

With the right padding, support garments, and an ever so slightly different sleeve shape, this masterpiece looks like it comes from the Edwardian/Gilded Era and that's what I thought I was looking at when I saw it. Add a high waisted wide red belt, flowered sun hat, and oxford heels and this is Mary Poppins' Jolly Holiday ensemble.

Not if they're going to resell. Professional resellers/antique dealers will advise that you don't polish tarnished silver items and leave it up to the buyer because some people like the patina that comes with age. I recently found a midcentury "modernist" Italian sterling silver twisted link necklace (at the bins) that was super tarnished. I left it as is and listed it, and it sold for $100.

Weebles could very well rock this and generations to come (despite no techno or batteries). Wish someone in toy production would figure that out. There's no better toy than those you can share with your grandkids while relating how you yourself used to enjoy them .

Giggle... sorry for this but I had to...lol.. There was 2 pastures full of cattle. One had cows and the other bulls. One day there was an earthquake. all the cows fell down, but none of the bulls did. The cows were curious so, asked them why they didn't fall over. One of the bulls looked over and replied, "We bulls wobble but we don't fall down!"

Sadly I think not.. Not shadowless or a first edition marking, so it's just a base set, which is old and cool, but worth a few dollars.

I beat not the original but a computer version of this game all the time as a kid! Just gotta take it slow, actually focus on getting food into your people, and buy TONS of medicine and antiseptics at the beginning of the game! Oh, and spices, those can heal a lot of the diseases you run into as well or keep the crew from mutinying against you in the bad times!

So Goodwill can resell them for more? Even if the person stopped in to store to see if they were found, Goodwill is still just going to put those back out for sale and make more money off of them. Also, ew.

I'll need more information about the model before I make an offer. Do they have a driver's license and their own transportation? What is their education level? Are they a good conversationalist? Are they kind to others? Are they specifically kind to children, animals, the elderly, and the homeless? Do they take directions well? Can I please see a few more clothing options, different lighting and angles? Do they support DJT? Are they DJT support-adjacent? Honestly, I could just use some help around the house but I also have standards, you see. Please and thank YOU.

I found a classic cowboy shearling/sheep pelt coat at the Salvation Army, despite the fact that it was almost completely dark in the store (which was my fault - earlier I had found a outdoor bug-zapper light; I wanted to see whether it worked so I plugged it in. There was a hail of sparks and the whole store went dark...).

Unless they ask, parents need to leave alone the "stuff" that their children have packed away or "left in their rooms" when heading off to college or wherever. My parents were smart enough to know 1) "you can't take your 'Star Wars' toys outside!" and, 2) the "Star Wars" figures and toys are safe in the garage. Years later, we sold the collection to a collector who gave us Top Dollar (several thou$and) because, even used, everything was "like new." Hardback books are valuable. Comics are valuable. I have vinyl records I paid less than $10 for back in the 1980s, and more than just a few are now valued at 10× or 100× their original price.

Back in the 70s, my mom had that same wooden salad bowl that's sitting on the bin with the green lid. I'm sure she still has it buried somewhere in her kitchen.

We all did, lol! And they came with those gigantic wooden tongs or at least the oversized wooden fork and spoon. Salad never tasted better.

You can order new bowls (and attachments) on the KitchenAid website. Bowls are $40-$60 (fancier ones are more; there's a ceramic one with blue watercolors that I really want for $75) and new bread hooks, flat beater, and whips start at $20. Even if she bought new bowls and attachments for both, the entire lot (mixers, bowls, & attachments) would still be less than a brand-new basic kitchenaid stand mixer, which is $299; refurbished mixers start at $199, which is more than I paid for my brand-new one 20+ years ago. This is an amazing find, even without the bowls.

Some second hand/charity stores of them put the jigsaw together to check them out before they put them on sale. Can't imagine that happened in this case, unless one of the workers was a jigsaw fan that liked a good challenge.

Goodwill employee, in case anyone is wondering, brands like Kate Spade, Coach, etc. usually go to Goodwills online store, but if they are not in the best of condition they will be sold in store. What probably happened was they had been sitting on the shelf to long and they went into the bin when their tag color was due to be pulled. (aka either thrown out or put into salvage to be sent for recycling) It kills me when we have to salvage good items like this.

    Rachel Smith
    Community Member
3 years ago Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

Yeah but they get sent to the goodwill outlets (the bins) , that's how these people are finding them. So honestly either way they are not getting wasted.

I've donated all kinds of "good stuff" to Goodwill or St. Vinnies, some of which still had tags on it - not bragging about the tagged stuff, I was just too lazy to return it in the time frame.

This also speaks to just how much stuff we produce as a society. There's too much to go around!!! And if you knew how little it cost to make that bag and the fact that the high price tag is for that name not the bag itself you might be sick!

I think this is a real one, but an older one ±1985. You can have this checked but I wouldn't bother, a nice scarf is a nice scarf. I work in the industry and I know they changed it to Burberry some time ago. So there's no longer an s at the end now. However yours looks legit up to the font they used in older editions and the way the design and mohair looks in this photo...fakes usually have a finer black yarn or bristle woven in. NEVER ever has a label read Burberry's!! Anyway, hope you get to enjoy it! 😉

Fake. Embroidery: is a mess, letters crooked and different thickness within same word, not spaced evenly, all the Ns look different, all the Es have different length horizontal strokes, embroidery isn't crisp and neat, voids in thread, some strokes bowing in or out, what the hell is wrong with the H???. Label: isn't uniformly navy, it's sewn onto the scarf crooked, the thread sewing it on is too thick and too messy, the short edges curl up because of bad sewing (labels should be flat and essentially invisible). Pattern: black lines not consistently spaced and look slightly thicker in places. Tassels: only one is neat with equal space between twists, the brown & black and solid brown ones aren't twisted evenly, with sections puffing up and the spacing uneven, all the black & white ones are an absolute mess, several tassels are unraveling at the bottom. This wouldn't pass Burberry QA. Fake. Also, labels read Burberrys until the 1990s.

The chances of this being authentic are exactly 1%. When the Louis Vuitton brand first originated in the mid-19th century, they exclusively made luxury luggage. The interlocking LV logo was created at the time as an anti counterfeiting measure because back then, it was impossible to replicate. Fast forward 150 years, and the LV logo is now a very easily reproduced status symbol (along with Chanel, Coach, Christian Dior, and Fendi). Counterfeit Louis Vuitton merchandise is now so prevalent that 99% of what exists in the global market is not authentic. There are experts who authenticate luxury and designer goods, as well as dating them and appraising their value, but in this case it's probably not necessary since the odds practically guarantee that it's a fake.

I feel so old knowing that the early 90's is now considered vintage. It seems like it just happened yesterday...the 50's is vintage to me. Sigh.

Plushies must be loved - it's so sad they appear in the bins.

I think I had both of these growing up, didn't the one on the right make some kind of purring/rattle noise when it's head moved?) I had the purple kitty suprise and it was one of my favorites until I probably loved it to much, lol. Found one at work the other day with the kittens still inside!

That doesn’t look very much like Robert Nesta Marley… My daughter had a shirt with ‘his’ face printed on, OMG. Thing was, majority of teenagers don’t really a clue what he looked like, they just have an idea. Nobody said a word to her about the silly thing except me. I put it in the op shop bag and donated it away.

Wildlife rehabilitation sanctuaries use these for the orphaned baby animals to nestle. Humane Society of US has info on where to send them.

I’m crying, how come the thrift storers near me sell clothing for grandmas in the women’s? Normally, id have to go to the men’s section and get dirty stares from ACTUAL MEN! (I’m androgynous btw.) I went thrifting and everything i bought was from the men’s!
