When you welcome a smol awoo into your home and heart, you don’t want to think about the day when it grows up and loses its puppy fat. But the day comes when your pupper grows into a dog. And keeps growing. And growing. And doesn’t stop. You check the Canine Instruction Manual that came with your pet and you finally realize—aha! You forgot it’s one of those giant dog breeds that make you think Clifford, the Big Red Dog might be real.
Bored Panda has collected photos of the biggest, most playful, floofiest, and young-at-heart dogs that you’d want to hug all day long and get lost in their fur, so scroll on down and give the bestest boys and girls a boop on the nose with an upvote. However, just because a dog is big, it doesn’t mean that it has to be obese (aka a chonky chonk). All jokes aside, if you want your family pet to live a long and happy life, it’s vital that you help it stay lean and avoid entering the ‘overweight zone’ which requires extra effort on your part. Bored Panda spoke about canine fitness and doggo diets with the UK’s leading vet charity, the PDSA. His name was Schultz and I am the guy underneath him. This image has been shared well over 3 million times across the internet now and it continues to make me happy. He passed away unexpected at age 8 (about 4 years ago). My wife and I started the Schultz Foundation with the Great Pyrenees Rescue of Atlanta in his memory....He was only 18 months old in this photo and we had just rescued him about 3 weeks earlier.

Yes, we volunteer with the Great Pyrenees Rescue Group of Atlanta, This was our first Pyr that we rescued, but have had 20 or so fosters through the years. Everything in the house is always covered :-)

As a human Newfoundlander, growing up with a canine Newfoundlander, though considerably more diminutive in stature than this handsome fellow, I learned to love the breed. Terra Nova Desmaduit ("Newfie" to her loyal subjects), was the most empathetic, loyal, and caring creature I've ever known. In her time on planet Newfoundland, her only issue related to her beloved beach. It became impossible to take her there on a sunny day with kids playing in the water. She'd become nearly manic in her attempts to 'rescue' them. Though a heroic swimmer and lifeguard, she never 'got' that kiddies' squeals, as cold spray drenched them or, worse, they dove into the waves, were joyful, not fearful. So not to risk those gentle jaws inadvertently tearing swimsuits or scaring kids, as she gently dragged them out of the water, we opted to bring her there only on cold days when the beach would be hers alone. All said, the mighty Newfoundland has my vote!!
The PDSA explained to Bored Panda that a dog’s food is “an essential part” of their fitness. So you can’t just focus only on getting lots of movement—you need to give dieting and nutrition some proper attention, too! Similarly, you can’t get just the diet right while ignoring the importance of exercise.
“Making sure they are fed on a complete diet which keeps them at their ideal weight is important to keep them fit and healthy. As a general rule, we tend to give our pets too much food which can lead to obesity and reduced activity levels,” a representative of the PDSA told Bored Panda.

A bad dog owner dumped this wolfdog at a kill shelter when he got too big and too much to handle. Luckily a sanctuary took him, instead and saved his life! His DNA testing came back as 87.5 % Gray Wolf, 8.6 % Siberian Husky, and 3.9 % German Shepherd.

I spent my teenage years with a wolf dog, he was 85% American timber and the rest was malamute husky. He was 185 pounds of pure lap dog! To this day one of the sweetest I've known. We were his pack.

It’s better to err on the side of too little food than too much when we’re living in a society of overabundance, then. What’s more, you should do a bit of personal research to learn what the ideal weight for your dog breed is for its age. If in need, talk to a professional to get their take on what’s what.
Getting serious about health means putting in the time and energy to make your dog’s life better. And that means treating your pet’s health like you would your own if you’re all about fitness. So get your kitchen scales out!
“The best way to monitor your dog’s food intake is to weigh both them and their food. You can discuss your dog’s weight with your vet and check their body condition at home. Once you have a starting point and know what their target weight should be, start weighing and monitoring their food and treats to see how much they’re getting,” the PDSA said.

Many big dogs are for some reason. But more often of the very small dogs. Friend of mine had an Irish wolfhound, who was scared of Yorkshire terriers. Maybe, they see something so small that it should have been a puppy, but behaves like an adult dog and mismatch registers as "unknown danger"...

We have a pittie/mastiff mix. I hope you do get one someday, and if it's been well-socialized with people and other dogs, prepare yourself for a total lovebug. Ours is 80 lbs of pure love. She loves everyone she meets and will sit down in front of him/her looking up as if to say, "Where's my treat?" She hugs, she cuddles, and she's a couch hog. She's a LOUSY watchdog. She doesn't even bark when the doorbell rings, she just goes with one of us to answer it and greets the caller with tail wags, smiles and even kisses (if the visitor leans down to pet her). If she could talk she'd say, "Hi!, I love you; wanna see where the valuables are?" She's great on the walk and loves sniffing every interesting scent she finds. But if she sees a rabbit, all bets are off. She's strong enough to pull down a 250 lb man easily! We have two cats who rule the roost. If one of them hisses at her, she cringes and shivers. She's a mess, but we love her dearly and the love she gives back is tremendous.

“You might want to try weighing out their portions at the start of the week to make it easy to keep track of what’s being fed. Reweigh your dog after a few weeks and see if they’ve gained, lost, or maintained their weight, then adjust their amount of food to fit your goal.”
Just remember—you’ve got to take into account any leftovers of extras that you might be giving your dog. So no munching on cheeky treats in secret!

I have 2 cane corsos, both were rescued. One had his ears already cropped when I got him and the other has her super soft and floppy natural ears. I would never condone the cropping, but I will say my girls ears are constantly getting infections. I clean them weekly and they still need to have medicine inserted into the ear canal by the vet every couple months. However. My sweet boy with his cropped ears has never had one problem. While personally I wouldn't have the vet crop my dogs' ears, I do see both sides of the argument.

Years ago, I saw what looked like an 8-9 year old rather diminutive girl walking two Great Danes. The dogs were so good and gentle they let her walk them, instead of them dragging her, even though she was small enough to have put a saddle on either of their backs and ridden them like horses.

I'm 5'4 or something i cant remember (between that and 5'5) and I would love an Irish Wolfhound, they're my favourite type of dog. I love how they're so huge but think they're little tiny lapdogs. Unfortunately I don't know if I'll ever live in a place large enough. Plus I'd have to know if it got along with my cats and vice versa. But If I have one he's being named Faolán, because of course the irony of such a large dog being named "little wolf" is hilarious to me. Second choice name would be Conrí (Wolf King)

Yes lovely isnt he but in the photo it looks like he needs his nails cutting or going for a long walk on a concrete road to wear them down, it happens to dogs that we spoil because they have a life of luxury with us bit they do not get the chance to go for long walks on a concrete road or a long lane or driveway to wear their claws down. & in the end if not worn down or cut those long claws cause them a lot of pain as they twist to one side when they walk which is not nice for them. Other than that he is lovely.

That's a crime in a lot countries to cut ears or tails. US and Canada are the most retarded countries in the world about it. It's forbidden in Europe. Declawing a cat is a felony too. US and Canada are still OK with this barbaric things. Then they ban "foie gras". Double standard much? It's ok to declaw a cat (amputation for human confort), then foie gras is bad, it's not a disease it's a kind of bird thing to grow leaver fat to survive migration. Industrially this is really bad, ok. But i don't understand how cutting ears and tails are not banned in Canada or US.

My late dog was working out at the same gym. He was the most gentle and loving lap dog. Once i was with him in the parisian subway, he was splooting on the floor, tired, then a group of asian tourist wanted to get in, then they saw him and "NOPE". Fair enough! I despise people, who not love dogs. They must have something to hide and you can't hide anything from them so... suspicious people! lol. I don't buy the secular excuses "i got bitten once" or "i'm allergic". I was severely injured by a cat mother when i was a toddler, and i am allergic, then i got a black cat from a shelter and he was the most wonderful cat! (he got an university degree on human cure and welfare with me, with honor). Don't ever trust anybody who don't trust animals, they are untrustworthy.

i have a little dachshund/rat terrier mix who is the perfect lapdog. he's about 20 pounds and is really just a big napper. conversely, i have an american pit bull terrier mix who is more than three times heavier, and she's normally the one laying on top of guests while my small dog prefers to stay right next to me when i have people over. i think it stresses him out too much, poor guy.

Koji looks very similar to one of a friends dogs. Countach (yes, like the Lambo) was a purebred Akita and an amazing buddy. He would walk me twice a day.

When I asked my parents for a big dog they got me a golden retriever and thought that was the right size. I grew up with a silky before that my whole life he looks like a rat so a retriever is a gig dog compared to him. I AM SO HAPPY I GOT COSMO! I DON"T KNOW WHAT I WOULD DO WITHOUT HIM! But...... Yes love every hair on them & they will love you 100 times more, I would love to have another pair like them as both the newfoundlad dogs I had until a little while ago when they died of old age but my vet & other people said they had a good life with me because the average age for these big dogs & many other big dogs like them is only on average 8-to 9 years & yes I admit all my dogs i have had have lived to a good age as my vet says its only because the good loving life the get with me living in dog luxury with lots of love & comforts usually sleeping on my couch or using my bed as their bed with lots of good food & a big garden I have so if they feel like it they have or can get as much exercise as they need or want.

A lovely affectionate dog in most cases & like most dogs they are only aggressive if they have or have had a bad owners. The saying is true there is no such thing as a bad dog as bad dogs or ones that turn bad ar always the owners fault at some time in its life. That goes for any breed of dog.

I wonder what the UNIT stands for? but was really happy to see a Spanish Mastiff on this post. So many of this breed ends up in shelters all over Spain.Aquired as a fluffy,cuddly little puppy and the owners more often as not do not know the extent of work needed to bring up these fantastic dogs.They are strong-willed working dogs,exellent guard dogs and ofcause need a lot of exercise and space to roam.NO 3-room appartment for them.

for this type of dog, it's better for the ears to be cropped health-wise. As it grows older the weight of the ear hanging down might actually break the cartilage that's why cane corso's ears are usually cropped when they're pups

Thats a training collar we used it on my dog when she was little it barely hurts them it just pinches them when they pull its to teach them to not pull and it works really fast so yes in this picture i agree that if you cant handle that big dog you shouldn't get it but when they are smaller its fine to use those collars to teach them.

Great pics, great dogs, but I am a bit worried, that Great Pyrenees are depicted as 'gentle giants'. The male ones are certainly not, not in Europe, anyway. They are territorial guard dogs - not watch dogs, guard dogs. They take a defensive stance, at first, but eventually the get physical. And they are very independent, so they decide who and what needs guarding. Im aslo a bit stunned at how oversized some breeds are. I really hope that is not a trend in breeding because that woudl have disastrous consequences for the breed's health. Still: gorgeous dogs!!

You made a good comment "Maybe it's because the European ones still have to do their jobs". You go a hint in your own comment. That's because a lot of working breeds are now "family dogs"so the breeders select the most gentle, the most tiny, the most cute over the most effective to work. That's a crime for me when it comes to a completely different breed and the lost of the "real" one. I have a finnish lapphund and i selected him carefuly, they can be like a pomenarian (look and almost weight...) or like a great sherpherd depending on the bloodline. You can get a lapdog or a wolf, behavior included. I'm fine with my little wolf and he won't get any disease from the GMO breeders. You can have a Pyrénées shepherd lapdog, or a real Pyrénées shepherd, depending on the bloodline. And as usual, some humans don't care since they make money out of it, and do not know a thing about the breed. The problem won't be solved until people stop to think "cute i want one!" when they see any animal.

Our malamute is such a good walker and he will go at your pace. Our husky shepherd mix on the other hand has to be in front and she always wants to go fast!

Great pics, great dogs, but I am a bit worried, that Great Pyrenees are depicted as 'gentle giants'. The male ones are certainly not, not in Europe, anyway. They are territorial guard dogs - not watch dogs, guard dogs. They take a defensive stance, at first, but eventually the get physical. And they are very independent, so they decide who and what needs guarding. Im aslo a bit stunned at how oversized some breeds are. I really hope that is not a trend in breeding because that woudl have disastrous consequences for the breed's health. Still: gorgeous dogs!!

You made a good comment "Maybe it's because the European ones still have to do their jobs". You go a hint in your own comment. That's because a lot of working breeds are now "family dogs"so the breeders select the most gentle, the most tiny, the most cute over the most effective to work. That's a crime for me when it comes to a completely different breed and the lost of the "real" one. I have a finnish lapphund and i selected him carefuly, they can be like a pomenarian (look and almost weight...) or like a great sherpherd depending on the bloodline. You can get a lapdog or a wolf, behavior included. I'm fine with my little wolf and he won't get any disease from the GMO breeders. You can have a Pyrénées shepherd lapdog, or a real Pyrénées shepherd, depending on the bloodline. And as usual, some humans don't care since they make money out of it, and do not know a thing about the breed. The problem won't be solved until people stop to think "cute i want one!" when they see any animal.

I adore giant dogs, but they're very short lived. If in top health, most of these breeds live 8-10 years.

I had an a Akita/malamute for 14 almost 15 years and she weighed 140lbs.. Best dog I ever had a true gentle giant!. We miss her very much
