People Share The Most Genius Solutions To Everyday Problems, Here’s 50 Of The Most Interesting (New Pics)
Everyday life is full of problems. Some are as trivial as a warm beer, while others are as threatening as a nurse being unable to find your vein for an IV.
But if there's one thing our species is good at, it's innovation.
So we at Bored Panda put together a new list of clever and creative ways to make the world a better place. The universe can throw at us whatever it likes; nothing stands a chance against human ingenuity."

My Local Library Has A "Library Of Things" For Residents To Borrow Useful Household Items Like Toolkits And Power Washers
THIS should be common practice. Libraries have become a community hub especially in our rural towns. Some have snowshoes, walking poles etc to borrow
I would like to have more backstory on something like this before making a proclamation that it should be a thing. I worked for an equipment rental company quite a while ago and we had all manner of people renting tools, and by that I mean some would use the equipment responsibly and return it not much worse for wear while others (granted, they were the minority) would use the equipment like the proverbial rented mule and didn't care what state they returned the equipment in and there was money involved in the sense of penalties for returning the equipment in bad shape. Outside the up front cost of building such a library, where is the actual library going to get the funds to maintain the equipment through time? Where are they going to get the funds to protect themselves from sue happy idiots that don't know how to use the equipment they're borrowing?
Load More Replies...The town I live in has a tool borrowing system. You can borrow everything from a pipe wrench to a seed spreader to a power washer to a skill saw. You can get a yearly member for $20 or a day pass for $3. They also have a weekly "fix it" you can bring down your small appliance or house hold item and they will try and fix it for free. It is very popular since you may need a tool for a once off or you live in an apartment but still want to DIY.
To be able to do this you need a responsible community, where people look after things properly because other people have the right to use them, too. In my "city" it would be a disaster,. Tools and stuff would be out of order 99% of the time.
Our library system in Martin County, Florida is incredible, especially considering the county is a relatively small-ish community. They have sewing and embroidery machines, glowforge laser printers, audio and video recording studio where you can make movies and record studio quality music, flight simulator training room/equipment, and more. Having been accustomed to the INCREDIBLE library system in large metropolitan Miami-Dade County, Florida ... I was gleefully shocked at the wonderfulness in Martin County.
I would pay a nominal fee to rent such things. Last time i tried to rent s tool, home depot wanted 70% of the cost of the tool to rent for 8 hours.
If anybody chooses that option, then that just proves how often people will buy a tool to use only once. Meaning this would be very handy and save so much waste. Problem is, in less affluent areas, I'm sure there's a very high risk of theft. If you need to show photo ID to rent, and any theft will be reported to the police, then this should help a lot. Also brand them with the 'property of .... library' so they cannot be sold on.
Load More Replies...So long as people are kind and responsible enough to return the things when they’re needed back..
This is awesome! More and more libraries are leaning into their role as community hubs. The one I used in college loaned out baking pans, mostly the kind of shaped cake pans you use once to make a Clifford cake for your kid's second birthday and then never need again. The library I work at now has free passes for a bunch of museums and attractions, including the extremely popular local zoo, and recently started loaning portable Wi-Fi units.
Because who's going to BUY a power washer? You use it once every 5 years...
Australian Company Introduces Glow-In-The-Dark Highway Paint Technology
Now Earth can glow for aliens, just like the stars on the ceiling in my childhood bedroom.
This is a greeting call for the aliens to finally come down to Earth.
Load More Replies...I don't know about other countries, but here in the US the lights now on a lot of vehicles are so bright they absolutely blind you when you see oncoming cars. I have pretty much quit driving at night because I "lose" the center line when these cars come past me, which is dangerous if you're going around a curve. And all of our roads except one are like roller coasters. What I'm trying to say with all that is, I wonder if those lines would be bright enough to see over the headlights of these newer vehicles.
I was wondering if it would be the same as the "reflectors' they put in the roads yrs ago - which now are broken/dirty? totally useless. When I HAVE to drive at night ( I also hate it) I have to look at the side of the road most of the time, to avoid the headlights. I once thought they had their highbeams on, so I tapped mine in request - well they put theirs on and I swear I heard aliens shout turn those lights down !
Load More Replies...More plastic pollution! Uk roads have had "cats eyes"" - self cleaning, reflective studs set into the road. White in the middle, green between lanes and red for the edges. Brilliant for unlighted rural roads, rain etc. Invented 50 years ago and cheP to make and place.
We have those in Australia too. This was tested in a town near mine, the theory being that it could mean less confusion for animals. No word yet whether it was a success or not.
Load More Replies...How long do they glow? In my experience glow-in-the-dark things fade pretty fast without a recharge
Apparently up to about 8 hours. It depends a bit on the amount of sunlight it had a chance to absorb during the day. So obviously during winter and cloudy days it's less effective. https://www.news.com.au/technology/motoring/on-the-road/victorian-road-work-goes-viral/news-story/55ec71de973c79add8d6ae1ff06a3809
Load More Replies...Where I live they are reflective (CA). Very easy to see and not the plastic kind. I believe they contain glass beads. They also need to be repainted every year because snow plows are brutal.
To get a better understanding of how such cool projects items come to life, we contacted London-based industrial designer and product visualizer Sam Gwilt, who runs a YouTube channel called Sam Does Design.
First of all, there's lots of sketching. "From research, to concept, to refinement, to manufacturing, designing a product is an iterative process that can take years," Gwilt told Bored Panda in an earlier interview.
"It's important to understand what the markets and mindsets of customers will be like in the next few years (when the product launches)."
Dallas Love Field Airport Offers Free Feminine Hygiene Products
i had to google to make sure this was actually in Texas! Bonuspoints for Texas!
It's crazy that so far I've only seen this in Dallas. One of the last places I thought I would see it.
Load More Replies...We had these in my schools bathroom but then people were flushing them and sticking them everywhere so they had to stop. 💔 Now you’d have to go back to class and ask for a pass, we’re limited to two passes a day, and sometimes they won’t let you. :’)
Stupid people just have to ruin everything don't they?
Load More Replies...They put in a milk pumping privacy "pod" up at work the other day. There's an app on your phone that opens it so it insures privacy. I thought the idea and technology was pretty well put together.
Please put one of these in each and every middle/high School. Too often girls deal with not having enough supplies or having a bleed out or something else embarrassing because they have no help or no one to turn to to get supplies. I grew up in a poor neighborhood and there were always girls needing loaned some so they weren't using toilet paper or cloth too.
No way I would expect this in Dallas. Nicest thing those fvcks have done for women in years. Or, possibly, ever. Hygiene products should be available without being overpriced and overtaxed. I say this predominately because after that statement I may sustain blows to my nose from morons at which time I may desperately need a tampon.
interesting you decide to insult literally the only place that does this
Load More Replies...Cutest tampons and pads ever! Brava/o to the designer/s and innovators!
Today The Nurse Used An Infrared Vein Finder To Place An IV
This would have been so great when they were trying to find a vein on my toddler. Poor thing ... this is genius if it works !
It does work! It's the only way for nurses to put an IV in my body. I'm disabled and my arms are shot.
Load More Replies...Remember to praise your nurses if they do it right in one go. My GP has one who manages to do it without me even noticing.
Had to take my daughter to the ED one night and they needed to draw blood - the nurse that came and coke bottle glasses and an eye facing outwards - small, wobbly kids veins run in the family (she was late teens) so we were concerned how'd it go - in and out, no issue, she didn't even feel it - best draw ever!
Load More Replies...I've looked into buy one to own personally! I figure, my tiny veins are only going to get more tricky as I age. I may as well come ready to make life easier for all of us involved!!!
Did you find one? I'd like to get one too if possible.
Load More Replies...Yes these are nice - they are not usually found in outpatient draw centers or used for simple blood draws though unless you are really a tough stick. I think they use them for IVs because it shows them the path of the vein. It needs to be able to support the fluids going into your body and a short little stunted vein won’t cut it.
Seeing that some fitness watches don’t, would these scanners work on a fully tattooed sleeve?
Load More Replies...I hope technology has improved, when they tried this with my husband during chemo, the nurses could not get it to assist them. They had an easier time without it.
That has been my wife's (she's a nurse) experience as well. She has them available, but prefers to do it without. Only if they really have to, is when they use them.
Load More Replies...They have to use these on my mom every time she goes to the hospital, which is a lot actually. Unfortunately, there are very few people trained to use them and limited machines so the wait is always ridiculous. Not to mention they jab her a few times first trying to find a vein without it. And when she was having her stat hemoglobin checks, the nurses didn’t have the option to wait for the vein finder, they HAD to get blood.
I wish they used this at my last blood test. my arm looked like a toddler had been playing darts on it and she still didn't get any blood.
I have had 29 surgeries in the last 20 yrs., and I am a very hard stick. The last surgery the anesthesiologist tried a couple of places, then said screw it, you've never had a problem so I am just going to throw a butterfly in your hand and I will push real slow, LOL
Load More Replies...Yeah, last week they used ultrasound on my mom and even tho they had to do it a couple of times
That would have been helpful- when I was 9, they had a brand new nurse, fresh out of school put in my IV. They missed so many times, which is understandable, but I had a panic attack and hyperventilated. My hands were locked in fists, my head hurt from the breathing, I was crying which made it worse. I feel bad for the poor nurse who had to deal with that
I had that same experience as a child..as an adult I speak up and ask for someone else if it takes more than 2 times.
Load More Replies...Traffic Light With Shining Pole
Yes please !!! Sometimes sun glare makes it impossible to know the color of the light.
More light pollution. Put it closer to the ground, maybe on the road, like the rumble strips, so everyone also keeps the eyes on the road, instead of up-up-and-awayyyy!
I really like this because there are times when you get behind a large vehicle and cannot see the light at the approaching intersection. This would allow you to see if it is still green or turning red.
If you're so blind you can't see a traffic light, you shouldn't be driving.
"Once a brief has been set, it's time to design multiple concepts to find the right solution. Sketching, scribbles, and CAD modeling are all useful to refine designs," Gwilt added.
"Each solution will be prototyped to analyse ergonomics and assembly, usually starting with rough card models, progressing to 3D prints, and then finally to full industrial tooling."
This Swing That Lets Parents Swing Together With Their Kids
In fact, a completely ill-considered solution. When swinging, you MUST watch the child's neck! The parent must sit here with his back to the toddler, what's sweet about that? :(
Load More Replies...I can still see the fire department showing up to remove a drunk person from the kid's swing.
Totally not for adults. Tried and failed. It's for toddlers and preschoolers to swing with infants together.
Yes they are, I used it with my toddler. How did you fail using this?
Load More Replies...I saw one of these recently at a park in CO and used it with my granddaughters; it was great!
We have this one on a local playground and I had a lot of fun with my daughter. Best design ever.

Brilliant solution! Kudos to that UK supermarket for introducing these tags. The amount of times I had a rickety shopping cart with it's loud screeching halts.

I think they give these to people with real OCD that take medication. I think I read that somewhere, off to research.
Surely they wouldn't need to? I have OCD and I take my meds at the exact same time every day. Its kind of a habit because I have OCD.
Load More Replies...ADHD here. I take a lot of meds every day and use just one of these. Just glancing at it tells me for sure whether I have already taken them or not.
I have memory issues from chronic fatigue and it would be super helpful. Someone earlier said they take theirs at the same time so they know, but for me that makes it harder - am I remembering taking them today or yesterday because it's all the same? Am I just assuming I took them because I always do?
Load More Replies...As a person with ADHD and autism this is so useful for my life and others.
I recently purchased these. We are dealing with multiple hospice medications that need to be timed. I no longer have to do the mental math of when he took this medication or that one. These have really made our lives easier
Often people with dementia can’t tell the time so it’s not practical for this. A number of wards I have seen have clocks by the doors and the time it reads is the number thar you enter into the electronic key pad. They use this to stop the patients/residents from escaping.
This is not a clock, it is a timer to show when the last time you opened the bottle. so if the meds you are supposed to take every day, the timer should read 24hrs, if it is at anything less - you know you already took them.
Load More Replies...Im sorry but I don't think this is for people with Alzheimer. Maybe early in the process 😐
I don't think the eggs would fit inside.

In Milwaukee we have a sidewalk built that goes down to the water on Lake Michigan at one of our beaches. They also lend out free wheelchairs that can be easily pushed on the sand.
That awesome! Milwaukee is my hometown. I love about an hour away now so haven't been to any Milwaukee beaches in years. I love that they did that! I'm assuming it's at Bradford Beach?
Load More Replies...Is anyone else thinking it would be awesome to have someone push you really fast and then get launched in to the water? Please don't do that to your disabled friends though! They might not appreciate the ride. ;)
I was thinking this should be at 35 degree angle to ensure a high speed inmersion
Load More Replies...Well, THAT is AWESOMELY brilliant. My disabled brother would want that to be spring loaded to go as fast as possible.
LOL, I was just thinking how awesome that would be to get launched in to the water. They could charge people for rides and use the money for upkeep. :)
Load More Replies...But you'll fly out into the WET! What is wrong with soft can-openers? Why do you do this willingly?
It's because they can't lick themselves all over (and believe me, many of them have tried)
Load More Replies...Trying to determine whether or not a particular design is good, many turn to the legendary German designer Dieter Rams and his '10 commandments.'
According to him, good design is innovative, makes a product useful, is aesthetic, makes a product understandable, is unobtrusive, is honest, is long-lasting, is thorough down to the last detail, is environmentally friendly, and involves as little design as possible.
Even though Rams came up with his commandments a long time ago and technology has advanced light years since then, many think his principles still apply today.
My Hospital Has A Fake LED Window On Their Ceiling
My local dentist surgery has a huge aerial photograph of the town and surrounding countryside on the ceiling. The dentist distracts children by asking them to look for their house, their schools, the local playground etc.
When they have them they distract me too. That's a smart idea!
Load More Replies...i like it. Hospitals can be so extremely massive, not every room has a window.
This would of made the depressing hospital experience a much less stressful one to me
Can you customize it?! I'd prefer rain or clouds, like it always instantly improves my mood
Oohh I was thinking like a video playing of what it's like outside. As if it were live, but you can choose your setting. You like rain or clouds. Someone may want to see snowfall or something.
Load More Replies...Love the addition of the blossoming tree too! I wonder if it changes as the season changes.
My kids' dentist used to have pictures above the dental chair. I thought I Spy or Waldo would be fun for the kids, but my eyesight isn't good enough to find anything!
Load More Replies...This Playground Has A Sign So Hearing And Deaf Kids Could Play Together
Sign language should be thought in schools. And it should be universal. I don't understand why English sign language is Different to American sign language. But if we all knew sign language there would never be a language barrier between any of us.
Ok I get why it would be helpful to have just one sign language, but (I took a class on this) sign language evolved in different countries just like spoken language, separately from one another and before it was common to travel from place to place. Essentially, universal sign language faces similar issues to universal spoken language. It would be so nice to have just one spoken language, but which one? How are we going to make everyone suddenly switch? And what about all the history behind these languages that we'd be losing? On another note, I think teaching a country's sign language in school is a brilliant idea
Load More Replies...*smartass mode on* No, actually for the rock'n'roll (devil's horn) one to be correct, thumb has to stay folded in. ;-)
Load More Replies...It's a great idea, but if they're going to do it they should do it right. The sign they show for "love" is actually "I love you." "Love" looks more like the "Wakanda forever" pose.
I think this could easily be included in one of those stupid subjects where they try to teach kids abstract stuff instead of real life situations. I wouldn't harm kids to have less hours of "religion" ( a real subject in Spain) and some hours learning some sign language, or Braille, or learning how to help people in a wheelchair, etc. There are lots of activities that let you experience fist hand how people with disabilities feel and the difficulties they face every day. Most people learn to be more empathic when they experience how frustrating it is. However, not only kids need this. Adults need to be reminded every now and then, too. We tend to become too self-centred.
A Park Bench That Can Fold Into A Table
Until someone walks in and flips the table top up asking to join you instead of sitting with their back to you leaving you in peace. Why isn't the US more like Britain?

Load More Replies...I love this kind of posts for two reasons. 1. Because they show some people actually cares for other people's comfort and welfare and use their abilities and knowledge to make life easier for the rest of us. 2. Because they show that sometimes the solution to big problems is just a tiny change, and all you need is ingenuity. It's the same in many aspects of life, sometimes the solution is far simpler than we think; we just need a new perspective.
The probably only had left facing shelters that day!
Load More Replies...Now this I like, Simple, and if you think about it there is no reason for it to be the other way around. I'm sure is also more quiet
Brilliant! Such a simple solution I can't believe this hasn't been used every where.
"When Dieter Rams defined the 10 principles, he thought that they'd be updated and adapted over time," Gwilt highlighted.
"It's a good starting point; a helpful framework, but it's exciting to see new designers from different backgrounds share their voices for what makes good design."
This Bridge's Fencing Has Holes In It For Cameras
It already happened. The guy putting them in wanted to take a pic of his handyman work. Haha
Load More Replies...That would be great. I love to take pictures and sometimes fencing just gets in the way.
I think i spotted a hole in the fence already. And another one, and another, etc.
I just hate that the people who throw things from a bridge and can't seem to not goof around on them are the ones that make it necessary for the sides to be this high in the first place or for a complete cage over the bridge. Why are these idiots so prevalent these days? A hundred years ago, people knew how to walk over a bridge. Now people are so stupid, we need 10 foot sides on the bridges.
It's less about litter and more about suicide prevention I'd think. Pretty sad that it's necessary though.

I'm sure they won't be in our local council high-rises. Only posh hotels and posh apartments will have these. 😁
Load More Replies...It looks like it might be hard to use them, though.
My thoughts exactly. My clumsy self would end up pushing all the buttons and stopping on every floor
Load More Replies...Difficult for a lot of disabled people though. I have a few elderly relatives with walkers and one in an automatic wheelchair, this would be a challenge for them.
The elevator has both the usual buttons and foot controls (you can see the bottom of the button panel in the top of the picture)

I cut the labels out of every shirt I have, as well as some shorts. I hate getting poked by a label.
My son has a bunch of great t-shirts from the George Plus brand (Walmart) that do just that, print the size and washing instructions on the inside neck of the shirt. Brilliant, especially for my autistic son with his sensory issues.
Load More Replies...As a person with sensory issues, THIS NEEDS TO BE EVERYWHERE RIGHT NOW
Love this! Can’t stand tags OR the scratchy scraps left behind when removed!
There are also more and more shirts with tear-off labels. The advantage is that it wouldn't leave any fringes due to the perforation as it would likely be happening if I use scissors instead to cut them off...
Slightly off topic; My son was recently diagnosed with SPD ( sensory processing disorder). Annoying clothing labels are a big deal in his world. If yourself or someone you know is bothered by clothing labels, check out SPD symptoms. Fascinating discovery for myself personally, I am finally on the same page as my son, completely understanding where he is coming from. ♥️
Gwilt himself thinks a good design must first and foremost form an innate connection between the user and the product.
"Someone needs to look at the product, and instantly understand what it is and how it can benefit them," he said. "The goal is to design a product that is understandable and desirable. It should integrate neatly with the existing lifestyle of the customer, and improve it for the better."

This is one of those ideas that sound great in theory but pathetic in real life. If you are nervous and you exercise hard but you can't have a shower afterwards you'll have to fly feeling sticky and smelly. No, thanks. I'd rather sit down calmly and read or just look at people.

This is not a US hospital. Nothing in a US hospital is affordable, and a great deal of it is unhealthy.
Load More Replies...Brilliant. I've never seen more unhealthy food come into a workplace than when working in a hospital (whether due to the lack of time on the job to buy healthier foods, or all the junk food that gets donated/shared) - healers, heal thyselves!
I’ve honestly never seen those two words used in the same sentence ( healthy and affordable)
I had a family member in the Cardiac Ward, next to the entry was a vending machine - full of chocolate bars and soft drink...#smh
So much plastics, though... Maybe using another packing material would be more sustainable. Besides that, it is a wonderfull concept!!
It is, but perhaps the vendors have also thought of recyclables to go along with the healthy foods? There is a shopping centre in my area that has a machine with healthy selections, the packaging is recyclable, and if you are still nearby, there is a small attached bin to put the packaging in for recycling. It's rather new, but I'm hoping it catches on & they put more of them in places and take out the junk ones.

The Local Brewery Doesn't Have Gender-Specific Bathrooms, Only Stalls With Specific Types Of Toilets
Really? I have never seen a man’s toilet that doesn’t smell absolutely terrible, either when the door has open, or there’s only one toilet for men/women respectively, and I’ve dashed into the gents because no one is about. I’m dreading more mixed toilets, because of the smell, and how unclean they feel.
Load More Replies...I like to think of myself as a good man. It's unfathomable to me just how many men treat women as objects there for their pleasure. I think women should have there own bathrooms where they can feel safe. And some need private restrooms where only they can use that can be locked.
And like I (as a woman) I have used bathrooms to get away from guys on dates or othe creeps. What happens if it’s gender neutral? Maybe be can have male, female, and gender neutral ones so everyone wins
Load More Replies...Come to think of it, if a place has only "one person at a time" bathrooms, what's the point in separating by gender. Might as well make both of them unisex.
Why not just toilets? People that have the option of peeing while standing really have to commit that that’s all they need to do
Because so many men will pee standing up anyway and get it all over the toilet and floor.
Load More Replies...I see five bathrooms for men, and three for women. Why not have them all toilets, then every bathroom is available to everyone?
They all have toilets, some of them have urinals and toilets
Load More Replies...Sex specific - not gender specific. A trans woman might be more comfortable using a urinal rather than a toilet
Load More Replies...It would make life so much easier for us trans/non-binary people, especially the ones who haven’t transitioned and/or come out :D
I feel like I’m gonna get a downvote for this but possibly my greatest fear is pooping next to women.
Table With Hidden Compartment
I would love this but not the dining table . Too many spills here ( kiddos )
Audi would find the hidden surface immediately, if not sooner. I'd sit down and out would pop an unexpected kitten head.

Well, yes, but the point is that it puts the nail at the right distance from the edge, so you don't miss the frame you're trying to nail into.

I Got A Waterproof Cast On My Ankle Today
Such cool, new technology (no more bended wire hangers to ease the unbearable itching). Loving the zipper and stylish design - getting gladiator sandal-like vibes...
Plus really weird, cool tan lines when you get it off!
Load More Replies...Wow. I broke my arm as a kid in the mid 70's just before we went to Disneyland. A waterproof cast would have been handy. Plaster of Paris casts don't hold up when you spend 2 weeks in the pool.
Bread bags and duct tape was the cure for that in the good old days.
Load More Replies...That's the best part! I remember sticking a bent wire hanger inside my fiberglass cast so I could scratch my leg. :) And it zips, so they don't have to use the noisy saw to cut it.

I read an old book where the narration mentioned a three-tiered water fountain for people, horses, and dogs.
There’s one in the first Boxcar Children book
Load More Replies...This is acceptable WET. Other than the dog cooties, anyway.
More people need to be aware of "dog cooties" because it is an important issue, especially if you have a young, elderly, medically vulnerable or short-faced breed in the house. When a dog drinks there is a lot of backwash, same as sharing a cup with a toddler (eww). Public drinking bowls are a very common way of spreading kennel cough. Even if your dog is vaccinated, kennel cough is like the flu with many variants and the vaccine does not offer 100% protection. If you are able, it is always better to carry a collapsible water bowl for your dog and give them clean water.

This Carousel In Hong Kong Has A Sea Turtle Mounted To The Floor For Disabled Children
it wouldn't be that easy, the wheel chair would need to redesigned for the straps to hold it in place without tipping back when it lifts up.
Load More Replies...Bet it doesn't have an easy way to get a wheelchair onto the actual ride though, I've seen many where it has this (and the wheelchair symbol) but when I've asked how I get from the floor to the ride, in my wheelchair they stare at me blankly. Like many things, not designed by actual disabled people are had any input from disabled people.... really annoys me
The ones I know usually have a border with a ramp one can access easily by wheelchair or other rolling material.

This would be cool for road signs too Edit to clarify: it would be cool if road signs were international
Load More Replies...Yes, because we always bike and walk our children in heavy snowfalls and blizzard events.
Granted, we haven't experienced many snowy days here (climate change), but after the plows go through finding the sidewalk is challenging.

In Rotterdam, We Have Free Public Bike Repair Stations
They set up a bunch of these at my old university! Within a matter of months someone had shown up with a pair of bolt cutters and stolen every single tool. They also destroyed the tyre pump attachment for good measure. :(
If we had those in my city, people would just steal the tools and use them for crime.
They start to pop up here in many German towns, too, but it is a kind of recent trend. I guess they will become more common here with the further development of bike infrastructure. The Netherlands are far ahead in that regard.
Yeah, seen these more often recently and more often destroyed, sadly.
Load More Replies...Really? Which (part of the) world do you live in then? I've never seen one.

Fan Pull Chains That Have A Light Bulb And Fan Blades At The End To Indicate Which Chain To Pull
I need these. I have 8 ceiling fans, I'm always pulling the wrong darn chain.
Same at moms... Between the switches snd pulls its crazy.
Load More Replies...As someone that has these in my room, they are way better than they look, because you can spin the fan, which operates independent of the chain so it doesn't tangle, for endless entertainment!
If you encounter a fan/light combination that just has plain pull chains there's a fair chance the one for the light(s) will hang a bit lower, because the lights are below the fan. With individual lights, as in the picture, the pull for the lights is normally in the center, with the fan pull off to the side. Either way, if the fan pull isn't already shorter (because the installer was competent) you can shorten it for free.
I have these on every fan in my house! They're cute and it takes just a quick glance to grab the right one
A Picnic Bench With Wheelchair Access
What would be smarter would be to make it a flip up bench. While it's great that it lets a wheelchair user access the table, probably 90% of the time it's not needed for that. So you've made a four seat table a three seat table (or maybe two I can't really see the other side). So yeah, hinge the seat so it can be folded out of the way. Best of both worlds.
Load More Replies...I mean I get it. But that is also a picnic table with25% less chairs for 100%of the time. I wouldn't call this genius
Nice idea, bad design. If they had seats that folded away then the table could be used with four seats, with one as a wheelchair space or have several wheelchair spaces. Or they could make the table top extend further at the ends so a wheelchair could fit underneath either end.

Ooo I like this. Personally, they look better then the regular old trashcans.
Imagine putting these in the USA, it would be carnage. You'd have Karens putting boxes in the bottles, people living inside them, it would be amazing.
Extra clever because not language-specific; foreigners and kids can use them!
Except, as a foreigner, I don't know what a green bottle top means versus a white bottle top.
Load More Replies...The bins on the beach in Portugal have pictures to show what can be recycled in each. But it's not broken down sensibly, so 2 bins have bottles, 1 for glass, 1 for plastic. This Mall Has An Area To Wash Your Hands Without Having To Enter The Bathroom Area
This is terrible for the people who (out of embarrassment) say "I just need to wash my hands" when they actually need to use the toilet 😅 *edit* for clarity, I am not one of the people who says this phrase, but I've heard it and seen it many times on tv/film. It's generally less about embarrassment and more of an "etiquette" thing in more formal settings 🤷🏼♂️
If an adult person feels embarrassed because they need to use the toilet, they need urgent psychological therapy. Everybody pees and everybody poos, why the embarrassment?
Load More Replies...It's for people who want to wash their hands without having to enter the bathroom area. It's all right there.

This Shopping Cart In France Has A Map Of The Entire Store On It
In the UK this would have to be updated every month. They are forever changing the shop layout around.
These would be SO helpful, especially for people like me who are embarrassed to ask an employee where everything’s located
Perhaps the wide body of evidence shows not that the French are smarter than the rest of the world, but that they are collectively better able to agree on a policy of *doing* smart things.
Perhaps. But perhaps this shows us nothing at all about 'the French' in general, as it's not at at all common in French supermarkets (where I've done most of my shopping for the last 20-odd years).
Load More Replies...This used to be super common in the US. Either a map or a listing of what was on each aisle. Haven't seen it in years and have always vaguely wondered why.
Because if you get lost, maybe you'll stumble on stuff you had no intention of buying, and add it to your cart. My supermaket regularly "reorganizes" its aisles, and I suspect that's the reason.

Why are these always red & green? They use the same colours at supermarkets and I often been scoulded "The lane is closed, can't you see?" when I've been putting on my shopping or paying for something and asked "Press the green button". Well no, I can't see, because I'm colour blind!!!
Best Plug Design?
Breville (An Aussie company) have been using plugs with holes to grip them for years. Possibly on AUS/NZ/Fiji plugs only, though.
Very good for older people, with arthritis etc., who may have difficulty in gripping plugs firmly enough to pull them out.
Yes, I would like at least 6 extension cords like this please. Anyone know if it can be shipped to the US?

Nah, I would rather a plug that goes flush with the wall, after all, it will take secconds to unplug but it will be in the way of my furniture forever
There is an Italian company named 4Box that is specialized in advanced power plugs that has flush plugs and outlets, as well as multistandard outlets. Used them on a few jobs, they have some pretty smart patents.
Load More Replies...Have had this design on plugs for years. Mostly those which were designed in Europe. Again too bad not every country sees the brilliance in this item.

Smart! Sometimes it's hard to get a good grip on a tapered plug that's tight.
Sea Airport Family Restroom Has An Adult Changing Station
In the UK there are more of these popping up in places through a scheme called changing places. It has a ceiling hoist , shower and bed as well as plenty of space. They meet the needs of people who have profound physical disabilities as they might need incontinence pants changing or even a quick shower if anything has leaked from the incontinence pads. It's great to see more and more of these. My local hydro swimming pool has two!
I know it is easier, but for the dignity of our adult loved ones, Please stop calling them diapers. Use the term disposable underwear. I have watched my husband become 'humiliated" by nurses using child terms for him. Just because his body is failing, it is no reason to infantize him. To a grown adult it is a lot less humiliating to say change your underpants than change your diaper.
"A diaper or a nappy is a type of underwear that allows the wearer to urinate or defecate without using a toilet, by absorbing or containing waste products to prevent soiling of outer clothing or the external environment." I don't think anyone is trying to infantilize your husband. They're using an appropriate term. There's nothing wrong with needing a diaper at any age; it is what it is. But I hear you and I feel for you.
Load More Replies...Despite it not being as exciting a pool as some, we always went to the same one because they actually had these in their family change rooms, which my brothers needed. Despite hydrotherapy being a common thing, very few pools seem to adequately cater for their uses even when the pool is labelled as a hydro one.
These are common place in the UK. They're called changing places. They have a hoist (you provide the sling) a height adjustable bed, shower and disabled toilet and sink. For people who can't transfer from their wheelchair to toilet without a hoist or older children with disabilities who need to use pads but are too big for the baby changing table. They should be common place everywhere. So so handy. Even had a mobile one at a festival I was at in london last month!
So, what do you change into? I'm hoping a younger version, get rid of my wrinkles :P

Toilet With An Integrated Sink
I've seen this in the US once. Too bad we don't use them more. And before anyone freaks out about washing your hand with toilet water - it comes from the clean water in the tank. (Every time this pic comes up someone just has to say "gross!".)
The water comes from the same pipes that supply all the household water, not from the tank. The sink drains into the tank to reduce overall water consumption.
Load More Replies...Imho, these should be put in schools. At least in the girls' bathroom, so you can easily take out your tampon/pad/period cup and clean up without having to leave the stall.

This Heated Bench With A Wireless Charging Pad For Your Phone At A Bus Stop In South Korea
Heated benches would be great for the homeless who can't or won't go to a shelter
We have heated benches in Canada with some bus shacks enclosed. In Winnipeg, the homeless are kicked out of them and off the benches. So then the homeless started "moving in" the shelters by putting up sheets around the windows, doing drugs, drinking and setting fires in them, rendering them dangerous and gross. The city has now been taking down the glass panes or removing the shelters all together. One of the councillors in charge of the shelters said to the news that the heated seats weren't meant to warm up people. Just to keep the glass from fogging up. They're not always on and often turned off during the coldest, frigid days.

South Koreans don't even consider the possibility that someone might try to steal their valuables, because it would never cross their mind to do so to somebody else. its a part of their culture - they wouldn’t even pick a coin thinking the owner might come back for it

The Elevator In This Japanese Apartment Has A Container With Food, Water, And Portable Toilet In Case Of Malfunction

Load More Replies...This has to be everywhere the average of deaths in a elevator is about 50 a year in accidents

This Parking Meter Has Been Repurposed To Collect Donations For A Homelessness Charity
This shouldn't be the box on the street, it is something that the government of every country must be taking care of. Where ppl are neglected and robbed to became a beggars, it is not human society, it is animal tribes.
It's less than that. Other animals don't really do that. It's only humans, we like to think that we are somehow "better" than other animals. As of it's is humans and those animals. We like to degrade everything around us to make ourselves feel better about what we're doing, we use terms like animal and beast to make them seam less. But when you actually know anything about other. Animals you see that it's frankly rediculous. For example: take the idea that humans are super intelligent and all other animals are mindless brutes, and yet crows make tools and art. Monkeys understand trading and supply and demand, bees and wasp can to simple arithmetic and calculate distances. And then you have humans who refuse to learn about anything. It's just sad

Giving money directly to a homeless person doesn't do as much good as giving it to a well-run charity that works towards providing safe places, financial schemes, return-to-work programs, rehab assistance, healthcare etc. One is giving a person a fish, the other is teaching a whole community of people how to fish.

A variant works on my hearing-aids, too: Red for Right and bLue for Left. I can remember that coding, hey?
I wouldn't be able to remember which color went to which side. When we'd show our dogs in the obedience ring, at rare times when the judge would say "Left turn!", the dog would turn left and the handler would turn right. I'm embarrassed to say one of those handlers was me...
I used to draw two halves of a circle in the shoes so when put next to each other in the right way, the circle becomes whole. That way they wear their shoes the right way. The way I learned my kids left from right was that I put a picture of a hand on the right side of the door (eye level for the kids). They can give it a high five, I told them you always high five with the right hand. So after a while they know what right is en also know that left is the other side.

When my mother saw a restaurant with low lighting, she assumed they were closed, and wouldn't go in.

Simplistic Light Switches In A Hotel
Always good to have appropriate lighting in case an impromptu game of DND is in order
You're party enters the dark tavern. Roll a D20 to find the light switch.
I felt so stupid when I had to call someone to show me the light switch in a hotel until they showed it to me. It was on the bedside cabinet where the draw handle would be, with a black switch on a black background.
I like the post, but 'simplistic' does not mean what the OP seems to think it means.
I go crazy sometimes looking for the switch for the lights above the cabinet.
These Green Rings Of Light Moves At The Pace Of The Speed Limit To Help Gauge Speed
In many parts of the US, if you drive the speed limit, you are effectively a road hazard. Keep pace with traffic, or get off the road, because being rear ended by that guy looking away at the wrong moment happens. Google dash-cam videos if you need examples, because with foolish tail-gating, this happens way too often.
Load More Replies...This is the Burnley Tunnel, in Melbourne, Australia. The tunnel dips, curves and goes uphill again. Since drivers can't see the end of the tunnel, they slow down. This creates a very large traffic jam. If you keep pace with the green lights, all the traffic in the tunnel maintains the same speed and reduces the severity of unpleasant traffic jams. The system uses AI to vary the speed of the pacing lights (as they are called) as the traffic conditions change. Even a 3-5% improvement is better. https://www.transurban.com/burnleytunnelproject
Yeah, because knowing how fast you're going is an extremely advanced skill. (I don't know if I'm being sarcastic, either.)
Where in Oz? Looks like Melbourne's CitiLink, but I haven't seen it there, though it has been a while since I've used it.
Load More Replies...It not for speed, it's to check the distance between you and the car in front of you... If you're in the green at the same moment = safe break distance
Maybe it's both? Multiple users above have linked explanations about how keeping a constant speed is difficult in that tunnel and this helps traffic congestion.

Yess! These would definitely be more flexible then those stiff handpaddles.
These would be tough on people with arthritis in the fingers. I have a pair of Speedo swim paddles I bought 48 years ago. I just replace the rubber tubing periodically. They are great for us oldsters with arthritis in our fingers as they do not bend and all the water resistance is on the arm not the fingers.
I don't know. Maybe they're useful for people with certain disabilities. Maybe they help in teaching correct form for certain swimming strokes, or for physical rehabilitation, or strengthening a specific set of muscles.

Hot Chocolate With An Edible Cup
It may not be cardboard but it probably tastes like it. Has anyone tried it?
Yeah, we have some around the corner from us. One cup is ginger biscuits and the other is coconut based. The flavour is good, but they are definitely a dry biscuit, not a cookie, or the cup would get soggy before you finish. Let's put it this way, it's a novelty, but I would never buy the biscuit on its own as a yummy snack, ir really needs to be dunked to properly enjoy.

i love when they put them at the ground level, so easy to read :/
Load More Replies...Unless lots of entries on this list, this one actually has a downside. It allows the shop to change prices in real time according to the current demand without much work. Wheather is hot? Up go the water bottels. Rain? Oops, umbrella price just doubled. It sounds paranoid, but here are already supermarkets that do that (although on a smaller scale, like matching the prices to the target audience at the time of the day or using prices to control demand when stocks get low). This is why we can't have nice things: Someone will always use them to make more money.
Even the supermarkets in our little rural town in the Netherlands have them. They turn red for occasions and black if out of storage. Green frame for bio/eco. It is surprising that these are not common in the US, it would make life so much easier with the correct price on the shelves.
Not to mention it would solve the issue with tax not being included on price tags! The base price can still be controlled by central, and the indicator would add correct tax for display

I had this at Decathlon in France last week. It felt wrong somehow…like I was steeling by not scanning every item by hand. Very easy and efficient but defiantly something I will take some time to get used to 😅
I am sorry, i hate these and ALL self check outs. The whole "labor shortage" is a way to get these accepted more and more. every one of these can put 1-2 people out of work. It is much more profitable for the store to have machines instead of people. I will not use them, and the store that literally "forced" me to use it I will not return to. And using it as a fork you would cut the side of your mouth.
Load More Replies...A godsend for someone who only has the use of one hand. You can lick a table knife without cutting your tongue and thus is just the same.
My buddy once sharpened the edge of a spoon, to carve something roundish out of alabaster. No one was happy to find that spoon on the kitchen again.
So, you need another fork to cut whatever it is that needs to be cut. This is just stupid.
Asparagus Peeling Machine In A Supermarket, Germany
three kinds of asparagus in Europe : green, purple and white. the white asparagus sometimes needs to be peeled because of a thicker skin : asperges-6...1c7de6.jpg
We do (well not me, i hate asparagus, but many do). We even call the time when you can get it semi-officially asparagus-season
Load More Replies...im dissapointed they didnt use some really long impressive word for it though.
Spargelschälmaschine. Not that long, but you WILL mispronounce it if you are not German. Or if you are Bavarian.

Since so many of you have the same question I guess I'll answer it. (I really wish I didn't know about this, yuck!) Some people make giant turds that are too big to flush. If you try, they will just clog the toilet. So these people need to chop the turds in to smaller pieces in order for them to flush. There was a funny story about it on Reddit where one family had a dedicated knife just for chopping poo. (What the hell were those people eating??!!) And now Amazon sells official "poop knives" for anyone with that specific issue. :) This is definitely something I never imagined having to explain.....
Thank you for your service. I can't imagine it being explained in a more thorough or precise manner. Made my day.
Load More Replies...Wait, what is this sorcery?!! Reddit legend tells us that only one family's ferociously formed bowels required the assistance of a poop knife!!
We had a poo knife (well a big palette knife) in a small care home I used to work in. One of the residents would get uncomfortably constipated, we’d have to administer a mini enema and then everything would come out and fill the toilet.
This Bench Has USB Ports
People would just stick gum in them, I see gum filled USB ports everywhere
Lol one city in Czech republic had benches like these, but people weren't thrilled, because their phones often fell through gaps in the bench it was difficult to get them out.
Restroom Has An Occupancy Board So People Can Queue Outside If It's Full. Gotanda, Tokyo
Yes, a giant bullet shooting at yourtoddler, makes total sense you or your todller,
My Flight Has A Smaller Tray For Propping Your Phone. I've Never Seen This Before
Also I was told I needed to fold it up during a landing last time on American Airlines. Like why? This blocks nothing.

OK but I wouldn't touch that with something that will touch my mouth afterwards
In Czech Republic this opening is on beer bottles, mineral water and some soda, too. No "hard alcohol", it is not so often with plastic bottles now, but every glass bottle for non-alcoholic beverages and beer used to have this. Also if the train sells the drinks, they can have cans, plastic bottles or these glass bottles. It's small package and it looks a bit more luxurious. And people drink in trains and as it is possible to open the "crown lid" on almost anything hard, but you scratch and damage it, it is cheaper to let people use designed opener than replace tables, seats, windows and other things people use to open their drinks.
Load More Replies...I've been on a train and I haven't seen this yet, now I know that this exists, I'll keep a look out for it!
This looks like older type of train on longer distances... I expect drink and snacks vendor with cart inside... Good luck :-)

That’s not why it’s on hinges. And you’re completely paranoid to look for cameras in every hotel room. Get treatment.
Care to enlighten us about why it’s on hinges then, or no?

A special sidewalk for them, and a handy lesson. A complete experience.
Load More Replies...There shouldn't even be a indicator for this. It's unfortunate that there are some people who are so consumed with their phones in public spaces, that there's an entire lane for them.
Which they won't see, because they're not looking where they're going, but looking at their phones
Load More Replies...i think i read somewhere this is a joke/protest, and not official. Still there had to be a tree in the middle of it :-D
It was an art installation by some architecture students, nothing official.

If there was anywhere I wouldn't put my phone, it would be between two precariously balanced full glasses of liquid.
Especially on a moving vehicle. Airplane or not, this seems like a terrible idea.
Load More Replies...I hate this already. Half the reason I fly anywhere is to be able to look out of the window. This would block most of the view of the land passing beneath. I always land with a crick in my neck, but I love watching the rivers, mountains and towns pass by. City lights at night make amazing patterns.
This Jar Of Olives Has An Easy Way To Get Them
Very handy and all but with the huge mountain of plastic waste humans produce every day these kinds of gadgets seem quite unnecessary. Forks and spoons work just as well.
Olives are good at escaping from forks, a spoon with a hole is perfect
Load More Replies...I find the pickle and olive contraptions cute, but unneccesary. There are small condiment tongs and also condiment spoons so you can grab the item out of the jar.

What happens when they lose your print data on the internet? You can't change your hand like you can a card or password.
Actually rolled out to all Whole Foods. Creeps me out but I’m sure I’ll start using them eventually.
Well, this certainly beats hell out of the bashing, malicious compliance, AITA and petty revenge stories we've been subjected to far too much of lately.
Thank you. Exactly my thoughts. I thoroughly enjoyed this one

Why is warm beer a problem? If anything messes up how beer tastes, it is having it served ice cold. American beer has to be specially engineered to have any taste when cold.
Some people say Germans drink their beer warm, but they don‘t. It‘s cold. Out of the fridge cold. That‘s cold enough. For other beverages too
