The whiff of blossoming trees, sunshine on your skin, the cool refreshing water as you jump into a lake, and an increase in vitamin D levels—all of these things and many more are what makes summertime – a happy time. (Especially for those living in places with distinct four seasons and loooong dark winters.)

But one of the things that make summer the best time of the year for many, can also make it the worst; for a day or two, at least. I’m talking about said sunshine on your skin, which can get pretty harsh.

It’s safe to assume that most people have been sunburnt at least once or twice; chances are, you have been, too, so you might know just how painful and inconvenient it can be. But for some people, in addition to all that, it’s also embarrassing—or funny, depending on how you look at it—because of the tan they are left with.

Well, to make you feel better about your own tan, if you’ve already experienced a tanning session gone wrong, or to simply remind you to properly apply sunscreen, we’re coming to you today with some of the worst sunburns the internet has ever seen. Our team has combed the online world and found quite a few unfortunate cases, so scroll down to find them, and use this chance to learn from fellow netizens’ mistakes.

On the list below, you will also find Bored Panda’s interview with a Professor in the Department of Allied Health Sciences at the University of Connecticut, Dr. Sherry Pagoto, who was kind enough to answer a few of our questions about sunburn and skin damage.

You're complexion is so clear, you will have to make an habit of using sunscreen or cover yourself I fear. If your eyes hurt (they are red...) there are creams in pharmacies.

While the unfortunate tans on this list might look amusing, in reality, sunburn is far from funny. Not only does it usually hurt (and becomes itchy when healing later), according to Dr. Sherry Pagoto, it can increase one’s risk for melanoma, a deadly form of skin cancer.

“Your risk is even worse if anyone in your family has had melanoma,” she said in an interview with Bored Panda. “Another thing to think about melanoma is that it is a very recurrent cancer. If you get it once, you are likely to get it again, so even if you beat it, you have to live with the fear of recurrence every day. That’s a worry you really don’t want, just ask someone who’s had melanoma!”

As the only redhead in my family no one ever noticed I didn't tan and should always wear sunscreen. The worst burn was my own fault, out on the lake on a pontoon all day, it was overcast, which to my 12 year old self meant sunscreen was not needed. Big mistake, my entire face had 2nd degree burns, my face was completely covered in all sizes of blisters. It was incredibly painful, and when the blisters started popping it was torture not allowing myself to even pat my face to hopefully avoid scars, it worked. Moving forward and I always wear sunscreen and I instilled the importance in both of my boys. Oh, I've also had 4 different cancer spots removed from my face, so far. Choosing to not wear sunscreen, regardless of skin tone, is just stupid and everyone will pay the price for that stupidity one way or another as they get older.

My dad went bald at an early age and was not good about protecting his head. He's in his 70's now and is paying the price. He's at the dermatologist at least once a month and has had to deal with multiple painful procedures to get rid of pre-cancerous areas. Some of the things they've done seem like torture, but that's better than dying of skin cancer. He'll have to manage it for the rest of his life. So wear a hat AND sunscreen if you're bald!

When I was 12 my shoulder swelled like that from a sunburn. I had fallen asleep at a park when my friend took me with her to her family reunion. I was in the shade when I fell asleep, but not when I woke up. I remember when I was waking up, there was a bunch of people standing around looking worried, but they didn't know me, so didn't wake me up. My friend was quite mad at them for leaving me like that when she thought I was safe with her family while she was at the play area.

I was probably 14 when this happened to me - back, arms, shoulders, face. I almost ended up in hospital. Never let this happen again.

Discussing the damage the sun causes to our skin, Dr. Pagoto emphasized that it doesn’t need to be burnt to be damaged. “When the skin tans, it is a sign it has had too much exposure to ultraviolet radiation and that the skin is attempting to protect itself from further damage. Some people like the tanned look, but tanning negatively impacts the integrity of your skin which leads to premature aging and cancer risk. If you like the tanned look, I highly recommend sunless tanning products because they cause no harm to the skin.”

I learned the hard way that sunblock expiration dates are real. At a waterpark. In the summer. In Arizona. Now the leftovers go on the trash and new is bought every year!

LOL I don't think "tan" applies to the one on the left. My arms never get that pale but my legs are similarly blinding white. I feel like I need to apologize to people for blinding them when I first break out my shorts in the Spring. :) My brother is strawberry blond and pale with freckles, and one time when he was traveling abroad in Italy he got asked if he was an albino. Ha!

You might think that you’ve heard of other ways, other than sunless tanning products, to achieve a tanned look without having to cook in the sun like a potato in a fire. But chances are, the information you heard is not much more than a myth.

“The most common misconception is that a tan protects you from skin cancer,” Dr. Pagoto told Bored Panda, discussing popular sun- or tan-based myths. “Prolonged sun exposure damages the skin and can lead to DNA mutations that lead to cancer. We have to remember that the sun is emitting radiation, and radiation exposure is not healthy.”

It’s unclear if being more aware of the damage the sun can cause deters people from sunbathing, but statistics from nearly a decade between 2011 and 2020 show that interest in sunbathing seems to be shrinking.

According to Statista, the number of people in the US who went tanning—be it once, a couple, or more than four times—in the last six months in 2020 was lower than the years before. For instance, while in 2012, close to four million people went sunbathing more than four times within the span of half-a-year, in 2020 the number dropped to roughly two million.

If anyone is curious, the difference is that blisters are filled with "serum," which can protect the skin under the blister. If popped, however, it can be like having an open wound.

I always tell my kids that sunburn is technically a thermonuclear burn we get from the giant thermonuclear reactor in the sky, to make it sound more serious. They laugh but my husband has had skin cancer 2 times already. I'm pretty a**l about sunscreen, reapplication, etc. to the point that my skin really is the same color all year. Considering how expensive sunscreen has gotten it depends on how good your health insurance is. Still a much better idea to buy the 5 or 10 ounce bottles of prevention than having your insurance pay for the cure.

It's not the amount of sunscreen you use. What counts is what protection factor it has (with your skintone I'd go for 50 at least) and when you applied it. Dun't just apply it and immediately walz out into the sun. 20-30 Minutes before you step outside helps a lot.

We had a client where I work years ago who was working outside and took his shirt off around lunchtime one day. Several people told him he should put it back on, but he said "It will be fine. I go outside without a shirt all the time back home in New York." Buddy, you aren't in New York anymore. The next day he was wishing he had listened.

with the angle in the pool, and when the sun is high, it's more likely to come in over the top of the glasses like that. mine are really good for protecting against peripheral light or from above. they have the little side visors and fit quite closely. great for preventing crows feet, as well as not letting light in if the angle is wrong.

Simply getting older does that, too. Aging is not a myth and your skin won't stay baby smooth, no matter how much product you put on it. For reference, not suggesting you don't wear sunscreen. Sunscreen is essential, but you're also gonna age.

I find people who criticise her "dirty" fingernails funny. People do get dirty when they work, you know. I would also like to see their houses, and their clothes. I know a lot of people who wear expensive clothes and perfume, but they shower once a week and their houses look worse than a pigsty. They survive only because they can afford a cleaning lady a couple of times a week, but they would be buried under their own rubbish if they couldn't. It would be nasty if the person in the photo were a doctor or s chef, but that's soil from the garden, people!

Straight vinegar can dry out a burn even more, and since it is acidic, it can complicate it as well. HOWEVER, a small amount of vinegar mixed with cool water can help keep blistered skin from getting an infection. Before trying it, read up on the subject to see if it is something you want to try.

Wow: Hell's itch, also known as sunburn itch or the devil's itch, is a painful, throbbing itch that can develop a few days after sun exposure. It can feel like fire ants crawling and biting, and can be hard to treat. Other symptoms include intense pain, paresthesia, and suicidal ideation. Some patients describe the pain as unbearable and unrelenting, like dozens of white-hot needles being stabbed into their skin. Hell's itch is fairly rare and tends to affect people with fairer skin, and those who have been exposed to the sun at higher altitudes. It's not life-threatening and can be treated at home.

once, at a music festival, I'd drawn a fake tattoo (not to make anybody think it was real, it was just the logo from one of my favourite band, who were playing, latest album) it was just under my collarbone, and I caught the sun on my chest. when it washed off, I had the logo in white against my tanned skin for the rest of the summer. it was pretty cool, actually, not that I'd get sun damage on purpose for that effect,

A friend of mine did that once in a tanning bed. Why she thought it would be a good idea to get completely naked in there is beyond me!

If you are fair skinned, the most amount of time you need exposed to full sun to get your Vitamin D is approximately 10 minutes. Use sunscreen.

If I got enough sun to meet my vitamin D needs, I'd be perpetually sunburned.

Tan/burn is caused by UV rays, not weather. You can get a burn when it's cloudy (though not rain/dense clouds, which block UV).
