While now we call them video games, a phrase that sort of doesn’t make sense when we sit down to think about it, the first gamers threw around a couple of alternative names, including "TV game" and "television game," but these were too close to reality TV, so ultimately, to this day, video games reigns supreme.
Of course, the hobby is so ubiquitous that nowadays, if someone was to say just “gaming,” it’s quite likely that the vast majority of listeners would just assume they are talking about video games. In the same sense, a gamer, unless another adjective is added, is thought to be a person who is a pretty intense fan of PC, console, or mobile games.

Still, if all these definitions are getting confusing, you wouldn’t be alone. Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers from California had to rule that "at a bare minimum, video games appear to require some level of interactivity or involvement between the player and the medium." Simply put, if you passively consume a piece of media, like a book, music, or film, it’s simply not a game. How “choose your own adventure” books fit into this scheme is unclear.

You can skip the dialogue? Lucky, the game I would have to do this loop with when younger didn't allow the text in the triple boss rush at the end to skip. Had to wait for every word, with full voice acting.

I play WOW at 64 and as a female...I don't do the mythic runs unless with guildies because I hit too many toxic bozos in higher mythics and its not fun to play then. So I'd rather have chill runs and fun than have to consider sending in my yorkiepoo to eat their pink bunny slippers.

As someone who grew up on the likes of Gradius and R-Type, yes. Yes very much.
However, “What is a video game” barely scratches the surface when it comes to terminology. Even the most casual gamer knows that discussing or reading about gaming means delving into an ocean of lingo that might border on unhinged for an outside observer. Genre names, “first-person shooter,” “RPG with tactical elements,” and “Metroidvania platformer” all attempt to sort the variety of experiences out there, with carrying success.

A recent game I bought called Wanted: Dead (released in February of this year) actually had a built in cheat code to give you a hidden, lower difficulty. One drawback (or advantage, you be the judge) is that your character will be stuck wearing cat ears throughout the entire game.

Depending on difficulty and game. Older RE games (before RE4) would do that. And I know Dead Space's higher difficulty limits you to 3-5 (I don't remember the exact amount) saves in the entire game.

I have played more than one game and MMO as pacifist runs. I duo capture-the-flag style modes as a pacifist healer. I love the challenge. I've seen Oddworld - and not just Soulstorm which has intentional pacifist options - played pacifist (Oddworld has you freeing your people from slavery and is not in the slightest intended to be run pacifist). I am working on doing that with the original Abe's Exoddus, so much fun :D
In the modern era, the term was used interchangeably with fans of board games, wargames, and even the granddaddy of role-playing, the original Dungeons and Dragons. These days, it is an exclusive term for fans of video games, and to describe the others one will have to add a descriptive adjective and a noun, i.e. a board-game fan, instead of a board-gamer.

A lot! Tears of the Kingdom is loaded with just as much subtlety and tiny things that most players will never see. Like the NPC that apologizes to you for being in the way of your photo of a recipe poster that you don't have to take a photo of in the first place and can photograph from another angle without that NPC in frame easily.

I'm probably as old as your dad. I tell my son this too (he's kindergarten age) but it's because we play pretty hard games (for him) together. I love MegaMan, Cuphead, dark souls, etc games. The feeling of success when you win something difficult is awesome. If you get too upset you give up or get worse from frustration. Sorry your dad doesn't get it. Games are great and have been and always will be a great part of my life. Don't forget to branch out sometimes. There is a lot to life that is fun, including games!

Unlike fans of other mediums, gamers sometimes set themselves apart due to the fact that their hobby involves “accomplishing” or “finishing” a piece of media. A particularly hard game could take months to master and beat, while multiplayer is an ongoing arts race of mastery and strategy. Yes, long films might be a tough nut to crack for a novice cinephile, but gamers can measure their “accomplishments” in days and weeks, not hours.

I honestly don't like multi-player games. I like a good rpg. Baldurs gate, skyrim, witcher 3, cyberpunk, vampire the masquerade bloodlines, all great. I just don't want to depend on other people or have to worry about if they are pulling their weight. The one exception is I did play Diablo 3 on multi-player with a friend on my 360.

I play Warframe, which is an online co-op game (it has PvE modes, but no one plays them XD), and the community there is pretty great for the most part. It can be a bit grind heavy, and a little harder for new players because experienced players in your team just coming through and killing everything in a mission while you try to do stuff, but most people are pretty nice. Also, the wiki for the game is VERY well maintained.

Not gonna lie, if possible I'll get an inventory mod. I have one for skyrim, I can carry like 32k pounds lol. Had one for witcher 3 too. Is it realistic? Nope, but then again my character eats the souls of dragons so I can't judge. The games aren't really made easier, it's just more convenient.

I grew up on the era of beige boxes and modems. Finally built a water cooled PC 5 or so years back. Figured I'd get components with all the colors. I might eventually do something cool. Nope just the default colors on things still. Would rather be gaming

I always play DPS in a MMORPG. I tell the healer that I have one major job, to keep the heat off of them. It's ok if I die, you'll rez me later. You die, no one is going to get rezz'd. Soon as they get attaked, I use all my nukes.

Totally. With certain buffs you can out heal almost every non-boss single enemy, but that is only if you don't have too many teammates (since enemies get stronger the larger your team), and you have full grenades and ammo, but that only lasts so long before you run out of heals and if the enemy isn't dead, your teammate will be.

This was me earlier playing Diablo IV "oh no I wasn't paying attention to my health I had my first death.. I'm terrible"... 10 mins later hits a bunch of enemies with 2 strong AoE's and a defensive move killing them all "Get WREKT!"

After I tried my first AIO CPU cooler, I got obsessed with lowering my temps as much as possible. Bought a new, modular case (Dark Base 900 Pro), custom hard-line waterloop, delidded my CPU, crazy thick radiators, everything. Yeah, all fun and games until I had to change my coolant a few times or I wanted to upgrade my GPU. I'll never do custom watercooling again.

Doubt most of the regular BP crew meet the demographic for LoL, WoW or any other MOBA. However, I’ve noticed a recent influx of younger recurring commenters, so that may explain a Fortnite/MMO element here. Many of us longtime folks are of the EverQuest & before generations.

Many years ago I was playing the Acorn version of the original Elite. This version has some missions in it. After a couple hours of playing one night I get the message with the mission details. However I didn’t read it properly and missed the name of the planet I needed to go to. I had to basically start again from the beginning. Also there was a r-type style game called Nevryon which only had 6 levels. Because they were so bloody hard.
