It has many names. The Elizabethan collar, the E collar, the Buster collar, or simply the pet cone, is a protective medical device that prevents animals from biting or licking their wounds while their injuries heal. However, the way the critters look while wearing it has earned the device a few nicknames as well: the pet lamp, the pet radar dish, and, most notably, the cone of shame.
To explain the origins of these alternatives, Bored Panda has collected a list of photos where our four-legged companions' expressions perfectly describe the way they feel inside the darn thing.

The collars are named after the ruffs worn in Elizabethan times. The first U.S. patent was filed by Frank L. Johnson in 1959.
The vets usually suggest them in order to prevent the animal from irritating a wound or removing stitches while self-grooming. The cones of shame are used to either prevent the animal from licking or biting its wound or using its limbs to scratch its head, eyes, or ears. The collar is sometimes also used to stop animals with self-destructing habits from hurting themselves. Also, the cones of shame help animals that suffer from allergies. For example, it can prevent the critter from ingesting any of the medicine that's applied on its skin.
Despite their regular use, relatively little is known about the effects of these collars. One survey, aimed at owners whose pets wore the cone of shame during the past 12 months, showed that 77.4% of their respondents reported a poorer quality of life in their companion animals while the collar was on.
The poorer owner-perceived quality of life score was mostly due to the way the collar interfered with the animal's ability to drink, play, or caused irritation. So, animal healthcare professionals suggest pet owners do their research when choosing the right design for their little buddy.
Why such big cone for a small squished face. But at least doggo is smiling
I love how he was just like, "This is good now, I look like a bootiful flower"
This cat looks like he/she is planning revenge on a comic book character...
I can almost hear the cat's thoughts- "Once I get this stupid thing off me hooman, I'll hack the largest hairball ever right in your shoes."
Maybe it's the picture but that cone looks awfully tight. Or maybe I'm a softy.
I'm pretty sure the cone is this small because the cat got itself free from the properly sized one in no time flat.

How do YOU like having your head in a cone, huh? HUH?! HOW DO YOU LIKE IT, HUMAN!
Look into my EYES...your now under my control and will do anything I tell you
That is actually a very bitey look. When their eyes go like that you have to watch out.
Load More Replies...I've heard of "puppy eyes", but I've never heard "kitten eyes" until now.
ohhhh...he's bringing out the big guns..."please take it off mum, I promise I won't lick the spot, I just want to play with my mouse"
My friend's pupper is in the cone of shame and I can't even.
Funny or cruel? Sweet or adding insult to injury? Either way, bright idea! Geddit? Bright?
Why do so many cats always look like they're hatching some cunning Machiavellian scheme?
Misty the Silver Persian has this Lion Cut for the summer and she loves it
The cone AND the buzz cut! I am SO going to have nightmares over this one!
Seriously, are they trying to suffocate their cat. That doesn't look right.
now that is so cute come on people that dog is not going to harm his baby that is love
The bulb has gone, there’s no light coming from that lamp and it’s plugged in.
No need for a bulb in this model, as soon as it decides on what to do for revenge the eyes will automatically light up With a rather strange sheen, mind you.

They just don't want to do anything with the animal clinic-smelling one.

This was the position my kitty took when she had the cone lol couch or bed hanging the head off
I knew my cat was trying to say something and now I know she was flipping me the bird. I did not see it when my cat was in that position, but in a photo it is all too evident. Oh yeah cat? Well back atcha with knobs on!"
Much better than those awful elizabethan ones. I like pet shirts the best though. Also am lucky enough to have a pupper that just doesn't lick wounds. And even the rash she had one time, after putting on medication she just leaves it alone. So always try without those darn collars, my vet told me there are many pets like mine that don't need it.
Someone better sleep with their bedroom door locked or with one eye open 😂🤣
Idk what's worse, the cone of shame or the kitty pajamas. He doesn't seem to be happy about either.
My cat wore modified girl leggings to make him a "turtleneck tank top". He had a tumor on his neck and a cone would not work and he needed a barrier between his claws and his itchy neck. Worked great and he wore it for 2 weeks. So while I don't like dressed up pets, sometimes there is a reason.
Actually if your cat has had surgery on their belly area a baby onesie is really effective at stopping them licking, or biting the wound..
When my daughter was little she'd dress our big (18lb) cat in her old sundress tops and shorts (with a cutout for the tail). He loved the attention and she never left him dressed for long.
This is my brother when I am angry at him but I cant attack him because his classmates will see
Doggo is smiling like haha, finally its your turn to wear that thing 🤣 while other dog is just very unhappy
As long as Fluffy keeps his stoic gaze northwards the Clemens family has crystal clear satellite reception.
Dennis does not like the cone of shame.
This has to be the saddest kitty face I've seen in a long time!
Our cat is wearing a cone of shame right now and she keeps trying to lick her tummy.
This is the smallest cone the hospital had.
Surprised theres no r/woosh comments here

What's that panty for anyway? I mean ... I know of diaperlike pants for dogs with incontinence issues, ... may be the case here ... may not ... other reasons?

There little faces are not suppose to be smooshed. This is the wrong kind of cone. Poor baby he's having to breath through his mouth.
Thinking of 10 000 ways to slowly kill you. And he's already up to 9995.
My cat hated the Cone of Shame after surgery to remove a tooth from his back -- here he's giving me the evil eye
I'm guessing from a fight, a tooth broke off from his opponent and was deep enough to have to be removed.
The mobile ground radar was the best purchase Rusty had ever made, so far he's rediscovered 7 huge bones.

why cant we use it against the pandemic? At least people will not touch their faces. cone-5eda2...a22637.jpg
One of our indoor cats had a sore on his neck that he would not stop scratching at, so I lightly tied a bandana around it. I kept it loose enough that he could wiggle out if need be and wouldn’t choke. And the layers of fabric allowed his skin to heal and he looked jaunty as well.
DNF. I realize it's probably necessary but pets being miserable ain't to funny to me.
Recently had both a dog and a cat spayed. Animal onesies from the vet are a godsend.
OMGosh some of these made me lol them some made me feel sad 😔 for the poor pet. 😐
