Averaging up to 2 feet, 8 inches high, Great Danes are instantly recognizable as the world’s tallest dog breed. And while it often shares that title with Irish Wolfhounds, it was a Great Dane named Zeus who, at 3 feet, was deemed the world’s tallest dog.
The interesting fact about Great Deans is that millions grew up with them without knowing it. Remember “Scooby-Doo”? Devin Harris of Joplin, MO is the owner and operator of Great Danes of the Ozarks, argues that “‘Scooby-Doo’ creator Iwao Takamoto consulted a Great Dane breeder before designing the character but styled him with characteristics never seen in the breed, including a humpback, and bowed legs.”

When I was in my teens, my brother had a Dalmatian who was about 65 lbs, normal size for that breed. I'm 5'4." Somewhere there's a picture of me with the dog sitting *upright" in my lap so that his head's above mine. :-)

In our previous interview with Bill Lambert, the Head of Health and Welfare at The Kennel Club, we found out that Great Danes need more than 2 hours of exercise a day. Moreover, puppies and senior canines will require a lot less movement to avoid over-exercising.
Lambert explained that the Great Danes have a friendly and outgoing temperament and are sometimes referred to as gentle giants. “With that in mind, they are best suited to owners who have a larger house and garden in order to provide them with enough space for both exercise, mental stimulation and to express themselves," he said.

Ours was 15 when she passed. Our vet, who she saw since she was 3, made a hall of fame wall and since then they have added so many dogs. When we had to put her down, every member of the staff came in to see her and laid on the floor with her. The vet tech who had a special bond with her carried her, alone, from our car into the office. He said, no, this girl deserves the VIP and we are not putting her on a gurney. That made me cry so much. He carried all 130 lbs of her.

All animals apparently expand as the sleep. Dogs do it, even the little ones. Cats do it, even as kittens. That’s why we end up sleeping about six inches in from the end of the bed. Personally, I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Years ago, I saw a little girl, couldn’t have been more than maybe 8 years old max, walking not one, but two Great Danes. Both Harlequins, btw. Beautiful and huge. Not being dragged by them, but walking them. She was having absolutely NO problems walking them. They listened to her when she told them to do something, or not do something. Such polite dogs for a little girl to walk.

He won't run. His job is staying with the kid. Now my goofy hound mastiff mix is too strong for my 11 and i know he will chase a car that has the right smell so she can't walk him. But this dude takes his responsibilities more seriously

My son and his husky were visiting for Christmas. Husky was being very well mannered. Then when I carved a rolled roast, I cut the twine first the turned meat to begin carving. Slowly, very slowly, the roast was moving. Looked over the side of the cutting board and my son's husky had a single strand of roast infused twine on his mouth. He was pulling it slowly enough that he hoped I wouldn't notice. Stopped what I was doing to wrestle twine from doggo's mouth or entire roast would have been gone. He thought he was being so sneaky!!

This is a Comfy cone and can be bent back to accommodate the dogs needs, like eating. It also soft, not hard plastic. I’ve also used a “donut”, which is also soft but doesn’t surround the head impairing vision and eating but does stop the doggo from licking stitches and such. I dislike cones but sometimes you need to protect incision sites.

This is an ELEVEN & ½ YEAR OLD GREAT DANE! That's really old for this breed, so it isn't necessarily because of her being purebred. She's huge and big dogs' joints wear out faster than little dogs' joints.

I had a huge yellow lab and his legs gave out at 12 years old and we had to euthanize him. I'm not a fan of small dogs but my next dog will be a medium sized dog. I can't go through the pain of having a large dog and them not living too long again.

I’m trying to imagine anyone taking her for a walk. It would more likely be the other way around. Years ago I saw a tiny chihuahua on a leash taking her human, who looked to be in his 90’s, for a walk. The little dog would take 3 or 4 steps, then stand perfectly still waiting for the old guy to catch up, then they’d do it again. It was so cute!

I bought a toy for my dog to chase. When I threw it, he looked at it & never moved. Tried 3 times, same result. Next day was picking up branches from my neighbour's tree. Just threw a small branch & of course he chased it. Also, when we're walking thru a park, he has to urinate on small branches.

It is not a bad thing for a Dane to be slightly underweight when they start getting older. It helps to keep extra weight off their hips. We were able to prolong my Dane's life by keeping a bit of weight off. When she started gaining weight, we notice she really struggled with her hips. As soon as that weight was off, she was so much better. This is all supervised by the vet and I give credit to the vet for suggesting it. He himself was a Dane owner so he knew first hand. All of his Danes lived well into the 13/14 range. Ours passed at 15.

Many big dogs lack a full understanding of just how big they are, but great danes take this to a whole new level. I'm pretty sure they fully believe they aren't big at all.

There's a Great Dane living nextdoor to me. My little Sheltie is always trying to herd him. He usually just looks at my dog with contemptuous amusement, but once in a while he'll humor my dog and they'll go running up and down the fence line, with my dog barking commands every few feet. It's the funniest looking thing.

They look lovely, but like all giant dog breeds they have a super low life expectancy, well below 10 years, and are prone to a number of medical issues. I wish health would just once trump looks for fancy breeders.

I swear I'm not imagining this... I commented on a Dane post on this thread and the picture was of this comical beyond words big 'ol baby mid air outside in the snow. My comment was, "I SAW A SPIDER!!". I've looked for it 3 or 4 times now and the picture/original post has just disappeared... ?? I can still see my comment through the bored Panda app, but no where else. Has that ever happened to anyone else?

These are adorable doggos. Little dogs are the same. We had a wee terrier who thought he was mighty and was fearless. We had a shepherd blue heeler mix who was a sloppy lovebug. Both lived to 15 and passed of old age issues like kidney trouble. Live forever in our hearts.💕

I'm glad most of these dogs have normal, lovely, floppy ears. those who had their dogs ears mutilated. shame on you. if you hate floppy ears, get a dog with naturally upright ears, don't mangle a floppy eared breed.
