Welcome to the little-documented world where things like plastic fry-ups, cable wasp nests, and lumps of hand grease are a daily occurrence.

Where tech support heroes, aka employees, are there for their desperate clients, tackling the worst and the best fails. Where computers fail us, processors die, monitors crash, but yet we still find the light at the end of the tunnel. Because tomorrow is a new day at remote work. And unless you’re tuning in on your baked laptop, you may as well count yourself as unemployed.

So please, ladies and gents, scroll through tech hell and back in this compilation of pics presented to us by the Tech Support Gore subreddit. No amount of eye rolls is gonna save us from the misery and sheer level of relatability for whatever happened there.

Psst! More painfully funny and cringe-worthy tech and gadget disasters are waiting in part 1 and part 2.

Um, the top one looks like the one server room at a car dealership I worked at not that long ago. They did not like to pay for quality. Some of the guys were good but gave up when they realized how difficult it was to make the owners understand how it all worked and needed upgraded or redone. Your info is safe nowhere.

Oh I had one! I don't know if I told the story in the comments here or on Twitter. I had a printer that would smoke after about 20 pieces of paper or 5 envelopes. I did customer service for a dealership and had tons of letters to print out every day. This was when nobody wanted to give you their email so our system wasn't set up to do that instead and mailed you an insincere letter every other week.

If it was a laser printer, it gets up to 400 degrees and it flash boils the (condensation) paper and steams. It looks like smoke, but it's steam. (My husband is a xerox tech)

Average Epson. Ours always just quit one of their functions, like not copying, so I'd get another that would take my unused ink. This seems like a fitting response.

Bored Panda reached out to Redditor @smarthawk, who shared a picture of a toasted keyboard on r/techgore which amassed 10.4k upvotes. The caption said: “User spilled coffee on his laptop - so he put it in the oven to dry it out…” Turns out, @smarthawk has been working in IT support for the past 5 years, so he has seen a lot of cases like this.

“I think that they are accurate depictions of some of the things you run into in hardware support,” the IT support specialist told us when asked if pictures posted on r/techgore reflect the truth or are exaggerated. He added: “Some things are obviously more shocking than others.”

It updates periodically with like all the information from all the computers, I guess?? It’s just storing that whole workplace’s file changes, passwords, etc to this text file.

But when it comes to tech-savviness, the difference between generations is obvious. While many people of older generations still struggle to navigate in tech, gens like gen Z and gen X have already grown up with it, not knowing what it means not to have a smartphone.

In fact, a 2018 study by Pew Center showed that fully 95% of teens have access to a smartphone, and 45% say they are online 'almost constantly.' The same survey also found that there is no clear consensus among teens about the effect that social media has on the lives of young people today. Minorities of teens describe that effect as mostly positive (31%) or mostly negative (24%), but the largest share (45%) says that effect has been neither positive nor negative.

My school has old outdated laptops for kids they replaced with brand spanking new laptops this year. I heard from my English teacher that they are remotely shutting down EVERY SINGLE OLD LAPTOP. Every one. Not donating any to a new use recycling every single laptop. Like a hundred laptops. Just cuz they are old.

However, the situation is much different in the elder part of the population. Pew Research studies continue to show that, while internet access among those 65+ is inching up, among the oldest age cohorts, two-thirds of the 74+ population do not own a computer (laptop or desktop), and virtually none have a tablet computer or smartphone.

The gap in online access among the older seniors can be explained by keeping in mind the complex process for getting equipment and the service to acquire it. First, a senior must obtain both an internet service plan of some type and a relatively current computer that is fast enough to use with today’s graphics-rich websites.

Moreover, the computer must be configured with a user’s individual information; and someone must be available, especially early on, to provide training on the use of the device and support for questions about online tools. What makes it harder is that most technology innovation is targeted at youth, who virtually have no struggle implementing tech novelties in their daily life.

It should also be noted that just like in computer literacy, generations hold differing opinions when looking at any aspect of technology. Knowing that millennials are traditionally the most attuned to their tech devices, it comes as no surprise that this group is more likely to say technology has had a positive effect on nearly all aspects tested, like: ability to learn new skills (72% vs. 59% Gen Xers, 60% Baby Boomers & 56% Matures), relationships with friends (59% vs. 46%, 36% & 34%), and social life (57% & 42%, 30% & 29%).

The main exception is productivity. The poll showed that millennials are more likely than all other generations to say technology has had a negative effect on their productivity both at home (32% vs. 21% Gen Xers, 20% Baby Boomers & 14% Matures) and at work (14% vs. 8%, 3% & 2%).

As a contractor it's common for us to set the screws the same way. It would look dumb to have a vertical and horizontal screw

The outlets have a usb charging outlet. The people are using the plugs instead, so they're taking up the outlets unnecessarily.

I have a couple of those USB power outlets. I seldom use them because they won't do fast charging - so I plug my adapter into the plug just like this - because it works better.

Ah, but are the built-in ones 2.1A each, 2.1A shared, 1.5A each, 0.9A each? It matters to a lot of newer devices. Thankfully the warts aren't the new 4.5A ones, because that instantly makes the wall plugs obsolete ;)

Okay and this is important. DO NOT F UCK WITH ELECTRICITY. Okay, you may not see it, but it will kill you. Through stupidity, I've received electric shocks three time via the mains, that was an experience. Many times through lighting (bit of a tingle, but certainly not up there with mains).

I once got a really big shock from a wall-socket as a kid. Like someone punched my arm. But worse was when I stupidly touched an electric fence WITH BOTH HANDS while standing on a metal-gate. I found myself on the ground with no idea how I got there. (Worst, I'd actually just before told my friend 'Careful, it's live' and then forgot...) No permanent damage, luckily. Only to my pride

Despite many concerns, it’s clear Americans still have a hard time unplugging. When faced with a list of technological devices and general life staples and asked how long they could live without each, majorities of Americans indicate that they could make it a week or less without Internet access (67%), a computer/laptop (60%), mobile phone (59%), or television (55%), with over two in ten going so far as to state that they simply could not live without them (27%, 22%, 26% and 21%, respectively).

The OP in the thread on Reddit states :::: "So we used to have this massive display case full of broken screens. A few years back we had a hurricane come through. No storm damage at all whatsoever. Not even any water leaks. Just THIS. The front panel of the case just came unsealed and this is the end result. Maybe the seal was already on it's way out and the drop in barometric pressure somehow caused it to fail completely? Hard to say. Could have just been a coincidence. Either way, we're NEVER doing that again..."

In the redording a lady wanted help with the keyboard, because her kid dropped from the table and the keys fall down. Atually more like a liquid cooled PC where the circulated liquid is then cooled in an additional heat sink located to the AC outflow. There seems to be no pipes between AC and PC. Thermodynamically makes sense while an aesthetical hell

Part of it is missing. Those old plugs generally were 2 parts: the part that you see here and the part that has openings for the prongs that screws on or is friction fitted. Plugs were not all molded in one piece at the factory back then like they are today.

Yep! I helped my dad re-wire many plugs like that, cords that were woven fabric. Stuff that is 100+ years old now and still works. But could be a fire hazard and won't pass the current code. A lot of these types of plugs had a piece of asbestos between the wires and the prongs.

They're not exactly under pressure, the batteries were long-dead and were stored somewhere where they were allowed to freeze. The electrolyte in dead lead acid batteries has a low enough solute concentration that the water can turn to ice and bulge the cases.

Some of these are from stupid regulatory requirements. It produces a lot of wastes for the sake of data security. Personally I would use a magnet but hey I'm just a graying nobody with 2 decades in the business what do I know.

The iPad doesn't have a hard drive; it has the same flash memory storage that solid-state drives use. So using magnets to wipe data is useless on those devices. Source: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bpcek5PXdQo

Probably thouse machines are defective and compensated, so the owner have to destroy them so they could not be sold twice. That is what we did in our store. Customer get refund, and we make sure the device is no longer usable/sellable.

Kinda depends. It might not have been the packing (IE packaging), but the shipping company. Packages get tossed around, sat on and crushed. Packing isn't the end all of shipping.

Postal service dropped the PC so hard that nearly everything was wrecked inside, while the housing was still intact mostly. But Yeah in this case, it seems to be screwless, maybe build on just plastic pins all holding it. Which is stupid.
