Tech Support People Are Sharing The Worst Cases They’ve Seen While On The Job (50 New Pics)
Welcome to the little-documented world where things like plastic fry-ups, cable wasp nests, and lumps of hand grease are a daily occurrence.
Where tech support heroes, aka employees, are there for their desperate clients, tackling the worst and the best fails. Where computers fail us, processors die, monitors crash, but yet we still find the light at the end of the tunnel. Because tomorrow is a new day at remote work. And unless you’re tuning in on your baked laptop, you may as well count yourself as unemployed.
So please, ladies and gents, scroll through tech hell and back in this compilation of pics presented to us by the Tech Support Gore subreddit. No amount of eye rolls is gonna save us from the misery and sheer level of relatability for whatever happened there.
Psst! More painfully funny and cringe-worthy tech and gadget disasters are waiting in part 1 and part 2.

Before And After. I Thought I Was 100% Prepared For Some Work I Got In A Remote Village Institution. Well This Was At Least What I Was Able To Achieve
Um, the top one looks like the one server room at a car dealership I worked at not that long ago. They did not like to pay for quality. Some of the guys were good but gave up when they realized how difficult it was to make the owners understand how it all worked and needed upgraded or redone. Your info is safe nowhere.
User Spilt Coffee On His Laptop - So He Put It In The Oven To Dry It Out
Co-worker once spilled coffee on her/my keyboard (different shifts), failed to understand why keyboard was fried because "the coffee was cold."
Some people should not be allowed to use any electronic and electric devices 🙄
I've done phone tech support. Some people should not be allowed anywhere near anything more technical than a pencil.
Load More Replies...Sure, because that's what you are supposed to do, right? Right?
Printer From Hell
Yeah everything it's fine! It just needs ink of course😅😅😅
Load More Replies...Is that a Sabre printer? Are you Andy Bernard? Did Darryl Philbin take the picture?
Oh I had one! I don't know if I told the story in the comments here or on Twitter. I had a printer that would smoke after about 20 pieces of paper or 5 envelopes. I did customer service for a dealership and had tons of letters to print out every day. This was when nobody wanted to give you their email so our system wasn't set up to do that instead and mailed you an insincere letter every other week.
If it was a laser printer, it gets up to 400 degrees and it flash boils the (condensation) paper and steams. It looks like smoke, but it's steam. (My husband is a xerox tech)
Load More Replies...Average Epson. Ours always just quit one of their functions, like not copying, so I'd get another that would take my unused ink. This seems like a fitting response.
Load More Replies...Bored Panda reached out to Redditor @smarthawk, who shared a picture of a toasted keyboard on r/techgore which amassed 10.4k upvotes. The caption said: “User spilled coffee on his laptop - so he put it in the oven to dry it out…” Turns out, @smarthawk has been working in IT support for the past 5 years, so he has seen a lot of cases like this.
“I think that they are accurate depictions of some of the things you run into in hardware support,” the IT support specialist told us when asked if pictures posted on r/techgore reflect the truth or are exaggerated. He added: “Some things are obviously more shocking than others.”

“Can You Recover The Data?”
Actually, it is possible. There are companies that specialise in this.
As long as the hard disk is fine, it should be relatively simple..
Load More Replies...If the parts housing the hard drive are fine then it’s very possible.
I'm pretty sure, it could be recovered. But why, where and how did this happen?
the data are in the hdd not in the screen or in the keyboard .So yes you can(probably)
Looks like it was in bad flooding, I think. Maybe lay in the mud and sewer-crap, had a few people trample over it when they tried to evacuate. At least that's how it looks to me.
Load More Replies...Scratced and damaged beyond any repair but frame seems intact so likely HD is still in one piece. Heck. They recovered data even one hard drive that were onboard space shuttle Columbia after the shuttle have been shattered during re-entry

This is whats called a 'midlands shelf type primary connection point' its part if the copper telephone network in the uk (the green boxes by the side of the road) where the larger cables from ttelephone exchange meet the smaller cables that go off to the distribution points (ie phone poles) not all of them are this bad!
I sure hope so! But it explains why so many Brits complain about the phone-companies.
Load More Replies...Everyone of 10 000 technicians who worked on this knew exactly what he was doing. None of them could be bothered to document it.
On the other hand, “I think that the general population is definitely getting more comfortable using technology but, no matter how confident you are, there's always moments where someone has a brainfart and breaks something,” @smarthawk said. In that sense, even if you’re very familiar with technology, faux pas still happen and your gadget may end up on the wall of r/techgore.
I Am Not Proud Of This
Truly, you don't always have time to do everything "Right", as long as it's safe and it works. You don't always have time for perfection, but I do have an appreciation of things done correctly.
Then do it again, but better. But note, it might not appear to be aesthetic, but if it does the job.
If they were smart about this being temporary they would have drilled their hole in the pull-elbow cover as that is very easy to replace later on.

Say Hello To Big Bertha, A 1.69 Tb Text File. Over 108 Billion Lines
A text file?!? Of what, Library of Congress, Library of Alexandria, and the last two centuries of Encyclopedia Britannica?
Probably "just" a log file of a veeery long amount of time :D
Load More Replies...You, my sir, deserve an award for this comment.
Load More Replies...I checked out the original Reddit post because I was super curious. Apparently this file basically just collects everything from the workplace it’s connected to. It updates periodically with like all the information from all the computers, I guess?? It’s just storing that whole workplace’s file changes, passwords, etc to this text file.
Please tell me it's just "All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy" over and over again.
Can Notepad even open this? I know it can freeze with files that are waaaaay smaller than this.
If you click it the 1.69 TB will download to your device😅
Load More Replies...But when it comes to tech-savviness, the difference between generations is obvious. While many people of older generations still struggle to navigate in tech, gens like gen Z and gen X have already grown up with it, not knowing what it means not to have a smartphone.
In fact, a 2018 study by Pew Center showed that fully 95% of teens have access to a smartphone, and 45% say they are online 'almost constantly.' The same survey also found that there is no clear consensus among teens about the effect that social media has on the lives of young people today. Minorities of teens describe that effect as mostly positive (31%) or mostly negative (24%), but the largest share (45%) says that effect has been neither positive nor negative.
Work From Home Equipment Returned
That’s just gross, disrespectful and rude. Treat other people’s property with respect.
Also makes you wonder just how disgusting their home is.
Load More Replies...I work IT for a construction company, this was my first thought. 80% of equipment returned looks like this.
Load More Replies...So disrespectful of others property I would bill them if they don't work. Maybe a good cleaner will take off the white ( looks like scouring cream) obviously would NEVER let them have the loan of anything ever again.
Have they actually worked? Like used the equipment for work? Or have they worked on their own home?... renovating and stuff?
construction site? renovations? wood shop? there's definitely a story here!

There Was A Breakdown In Communications...
I doubt these are being thrown away. All of the laptops have paperwork sandwiched under the lid. These bins are likely being used because the workers ran out of table top.
All public school laptops after 1 year of being used by 13 year old boys.
Here you go, this from OP in the reddit thread ::: "Chromebooks being returned by students. Staff were aware that the oldest of them were being retired, and assumed they were ALL being retired. So into the bin they went. So far I have three cracked screens and one completely dead device."
Load More Replies...My school has old outdated laptops for kids they replaced with brand spanking new laptops this year. I heard from my English teacher that they are remotely shutting down EVERY SINGLE OLD LAPTOP. Every one. Not donating any to a new use recycling every single laptop. Like a hundred laptops. Just cuz they are old.
No one is getting fired.. Its called E-waste. looks like a school changed the supplier from HP to Dell.. the paper checklist are to confirm all the HDs and Ram are taken out.. It is a shame to waste such items
However, the situation is much different in the elder part of the population. Pew Research studies continue to show that, while internet access among those 65+ is inching up, among the oldest age cohorts, two-thirds of the 74+ population do not own a computer (laptop or desktop), and virtually none have a tablet computer or smartphone.

Mine was on its way to that bad, took it in for replacement, that battery style was discontinued, had to go for whole new phone.
The battery style was probably discontinued because of the whole swelling issue.
Load More Replies...I don't get it. The grandmother mistook the bag for a battery and attached cables to it?
No, that IS a battery. Certain batteries swell like that in bad conditions, and when they swell they’re in HUGE danger of exploding.

The gap in online access among the older seniors can be explained by keeping in mind the complex process for getting equipment and the service to acquire it. First, a senior must obtain both an internet service plan of some type and a relatively current computer that is fast enough to use with today’s graphics-rich websites.
Moreover, the computer must be configured with a user’s individual information; and someone must be available, especially early on, to provide training on the use of the device and support for questions about online tools. What makes it harder is that most technology innovation is targeted at youth, who virtually have no struggle implementing tech novelties in their daily life.
How Is That Possible?
I've seen such solutions in real life and they seem to work for quite some time. It only becomes a problem if one little part of it stops working.
Looks like either a buildings telephone system junction or an automatic fire alarm. After ADT techs came to work on it. I swear, I never met a tech from ADT that wasn't just a total dolt.
"Our Scanner Stopped Working And I Don't How To Plug It Back In"
You have to admire the persistence. If it doesn't come off, yank harder. Our ancestors thrived with this mindset and a lot of broken stone tools.
I've actually done this with a micro USB. I didn't yank hard, it was just poorly made and the casing was loose.
One of my classmates (who is around 11 years old) said there is nothing wrong with this because he "knows more than I do" He also said that he found a 150 emerald vein in minecraft and is refusing to give me evidence or admit he is wrong

While technology continues to seep into every aspect of our lives, many adults in the US remain divided about what impact it has on our lives. The Harris Poll showed that strong majorities believe that technology has improved the overall quality of their lives (71%) and encourages people to be more creative (68%).
However, strong majorities also believe technology is creating a lazy society (73%), has become too distracting (73%), is corrupting interpersonal communications (69%), and is having a negative impact on literacy (59%).
My Gpu Finaly Fits In My Computer
Okay maybe where this person is, rulers or measurement tapes aren't a thing.
Or just check specification of the case where it's stated how big motherboard / gpu can fit in it.
Load More Replies...I can relate. Back in the day when i got my gtx980, i still had a case from around 2005. The card was way too big, but didnt stop me from removing all components, taking the case to my workshop in the basement and just saw into the HD cage and bend it backwards. Then it fit :D
That's totally fine. Who needs 5 3.5" hard drive bays anyway? The most I have ever occupied in my entire history with PCs was 4.

New House Find, Do You Think It’ll Play Crysis? It Doesn’t Seem To Have Any Problems Playing Rust
Same. It actually looks kinda cool what with the battered and rusted (reality) aesthetic . . . . . . Never say "old", say "a well loved and pre owned aesthetic".
Over here, this find was recently unearthed. This is what was commonly known as a desktop computer.
It should also be noted that just like in computer literacy, generations hold differing opinions when looking at any aspect of technology. Knowing that millennials are traditionally the most attuned to their tech devices, it comes as no surprise that this group is more likely to say technology has had a positive effect on nearly all aspects tested, like: ability to learn new skills (72% vs. 59% Gen Xers, 60% Baby Boomers & 56% Matures), relationships with friends (59% vs. 46%, 36% & 34%), and social life (57% & 42%, 30% & 29%).
The main exception is productivity. The poll showed that millennials are more likely than all other generations to say technology has had a negative effect on their productivity both at home (32% vs. 21% Gen Xers, 20% Baby Boomers & 14% Matures) and at work (14% vs. 8%, 3% & 2%).
I Try To Do The Right Thing, But My Family Is A Bunch Of Savages!
Yeah, but whoever tightened the screws has possible OCD. And I applaud them for that. [Edit] Top left screw slightly more to the left please, it's bugging me.
As a contractor it's common for us to set the screws the same way. It would look dumb to have a vertical and horizontal screw
Load More Replies...The outlets have a usb charging outlet. The people are using the plugs instead, so they're taking up the outlets unnecessarily.
Load More Replies...I kinda get it. Most socket usb ports only charge at 5W. My charger charges at over 30W.
An electrician would have those screws going horizontal that way they match the recepticles.
I have a couple of those USB power outlets. I seldom use them because they won't do fast charging - so I plug my adapter into the plug just like this - because it works better.
Yeah we installed a bunch of these and then discovered that don't fast charge. What a waste.
Load More Replies...Ah, but are the built-in ones 2.1A each, 2.1A shared, 1.5A each, 0.9A each? It matters to a lot of newer devices. Thankfully the warts aren't the new 4.5A ones, because that instantly makes the wall plugs obsolete ;)
Management’s Way Of Securing A Loose And Broken Power Brick
Okay and this is important. DO NOT F UCK WITH ELECTRICITY. Okay, you may not see it, but it will kill you. Through stupidity, I've received electric shocks three time via the mains, that was an experience. Many times through lighting (bit of a tingle, but certainly not up there with mains).
I once got a really big shock from a wall-socket as a kid. Like someone punched my arm. But worse was when I stupidly touched an electric fence WITH BOTH HANDS while standing on a metal-gate. I found myself on the ground with no idea how I got there. (Worst, I'd actually just before told my friend 'Careful, it's live' and then forgot...) No permanent damage, luckily. Only to my pride

An Internet Provider Pulled Fiber To Every Home In My Neighbourhood Almost A Year Ago. They Never Finished The Connections
US government gave them three billion dollars to put high speed Internet into the rural area. They treated it as a gift, and gave themselves all bonuses, and NEVER did anything! Why do we allow this.
I like the way we blame the government for business being crooks and ripping us off. Blame the victim.
Load More Replies...I would not have let them go through the patio! But if you put your patio over their easement, shame on you!
Typical. Private companies screw over the government and get away with it.
Fiber is 110' from my wifes office and they won't hook her up. She's stuck with Centurylink and their crappy service (2mbps is their best service, we pay for a static IP and they keep changing it which renders the firewall useless every time thus leaving her with no internet)
Despite many concerns, it’s clear Americans still have a hard time unplugging. When faced with a list of technological devices and general life staples and asked how long they could live without each, majorities of Americans indicate that they could make it a week or less without Internet access (67%), a computer/laptop (60%), mobile phone (59%), or television (55%), with over two in ten going so far as to state that they simply could not live without them (27%, 22%, 26% and 21%, respectively).

The OP in the thread on Reddit states :::: "So we used to have this massive display case full of broken screens. A few years back we had a hurricane come through. No storm damage at all whatsoever. Not even any water leaks. Just THIS. The front panel of the case just came unsealed and this is the end result. Maybe the seal was already on it's way out and the drop in barometric pressure somehow caused it to fail completely? Hard to say. Could have just been a coincidence. Either way, we're NEVER doing that again..."

"Of Course I Put The Toner Cartridge The Right Way In!"...
Yea... my boss did similar thing... the problem was one part of cylinder being worn of and leaving marks on a pronted pages... I checked, saw I cannot solve it, so called a repairmen... My boss thought I am just dumb girl, so he shaked and slammed hard the cartridge... well... it did not help. The spots multiplied for few pages and I had to clean the blue spots all over the printer and floor.
Usually there are rather precise instructions for replacing ink cartridges, either on the cartridge wrapping or in the manual. It ain’t rocket science, if you’re willing to take a moment to read, instead of just winging it.
The problem is no one reads instructions anymore
Load More Replies...I feel super sorry for the person who is going to have to fix that machine. As soon as they open the panel, toner is going everywhere.

omg imagine being the one to clean it up and looking like you exploded a pen.
I Guess She Wanted Wireless Keyboards...
We usually do that to notify the hardware is definitely broken. If not, the thing is left there, forgotten, re-tested, re-abandoned because broken, until someone come, re-test it and restart the cycle.
Same when I worked deskside. After confirming definitely dead, we made sure it was not just dead but unmistakable.

Uhh they are using the condensation water from the AC to run the water cooling "system" of that PC? It's brilliant in a way but I really don't think this is a good idea.
Atually more like a liquid cooled PC where the circulated liquid is then cooled in an additional heat sink located to the AC outflow. There seems to be no pipes between AC and PC. Thermodynamically makes sense while an aesthetical hell

Part of it is missing. Those old plugs generally were 2 parts: the part that you see here and the part that has openings for the prongs that screws on or is friction fitted. Plugs were not all molded in one piece at the factory back then like they are today.
Yep! I helped my dad re-wire many plugs like that, cords that were woven fabric. Stuff that is 100+ years old now and still works. But could be a fire hazard and won't pass the current code. A lot of these types of plugs had a piece of asbestos between the wires and the prongs.

Just Some Ipads With Holes Drilled Into Them, As Apparently Some People Don’t Know How To Wipe A Device In Itunes To Remove Data.
Some of these are from stupid regulatory requirements. It produces a lot of wastes for the sake of data security. Personally I would use a magnet but hey I'm just a graying nobody with 2 decades in the business what do I know.
The iPad doesn't have a hard drive; it has the same flash memory storage that solid-state drives use. So using magnets to wipe data is useless on those devices. Source: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bpcek5PXdQo

It is mandatory in some case. Erasing Itune's "device wipe" is far from being really efficient
Meaning you can still recover data after said wipe. Not after drilling trough the storage device. And yes it is sad, but for safety reasons you cannot resell the unit.

Why Choosing The Cheapest Shipping Option Might Not Be Such A Great Idea
The cheapest shipping option should be because the ship time is longer, not because the company did an asinine packing job.
Kinda depends. It might not have been the packing (IE packaging), but the shipping company. Packages get tossed around, sat on and crushed. Packing isn't the end all of shipping.

Load More Replies...If I had an apple pencil I would treasure that thing I would tuck it into it's very own bed at night it would be part of the family
Looks like the same reason as the keyboards with the cables cut, they're either faulty or they're being returned for new stock/versions. They break the pencils so that no-one can take a few either to resell or to use without purchase.
That's ... That's just petty. Why not re-use a pencil? (Also, you can sharpen both ends and have TWO pencils. So it's stupid)
