fwiw in the long run its inconsequential. they make it seem like it sets the tone for the rest of your life when in reality it only sets the tone for your early 20s. by the time you are 30 you will barely remember your roommates name and most likely be in a field that has nothing to do with your degree.

That's nothing - I had a course where we had 1 whole book to read every single week, until the end of the semester. Of course, we also had to write detailed assignments based on the books, so skipping the reading was not an option. Bonus: some of the books were pretty traumatizing (war-related topics, with plenty of "mass unaliving").
