No one is immune to experiencing misfortune. It’s bizarre how some minor unlucky accidents can ruin our whole day. Whether it’s the little things that go wrong the second you step out of bed or some inconsiderate remarks that send you into a downward spiral, sometimes we go from blissfully happy to plain miserable in mere seconds.
It’s easy to start feeling irritated and full of self-pity. When you find out that such random things can become an immediate day-breaker, you might start feeling grumpy and even bring the people that surround you down, too. It turns out, bad stuff tends to stick because we are more likely to dwell on the things that went wrong.
We keep letting pessimistic thoughts in because of the negativity bias—our tendency to give more significance to the negative experiences than positive or neutral ones. Rick Hanson, Ph.D., a psychologist and author of Hardwiring Happiness: The New Brain Science of Contentment, Calm, and Confidence, explained that humans evolved to be fearful.

“The nervous system has been evolving for 600 million years, from ancient jellyfish to modern humans. Our ancestors had to make a critical decision many times a day: approach a reward or avoid a hazard,” he wrote.
People needed to find food, have children, and cooperate with others to help them have children of their own. Also, they had to hide from predators in order to survive and avoid potential dangers.
While both of them are important, there’s a key difference. If you miss out on food one day, you’ll have a shot to find more the next. But if you fail to avoid a hazard—there are no more chances for you to pass your genes to the next generation. That’s why we generally react “more intensely to negative stimuli than to equally strong positive ones.”

“The alarm bell of your brain—the amygdala (you’ve got two of these little almond-shaped regions, one on either side of your head)—uses many of its neurons to look for bad news: it’s primed to go negative in most people,” Hanson continued.
“Once it sounds the alarm, negative events and experiences get quickly stored in memory—in contrast to positive events and experiences, which are not prioritized in the same way.”

While this is great for passing on our genes, it makes it hard to lead a healthy and fulfilling life. Understanding our tendency to focus on the negativities should help us to recognize that things are usually not as bad as we think. Of course, it’s important to share and discuss the problems we face in our everyday lives. But it’s also necessary to balance it out with the good stuff and remember to share a laugh or two.

Psychological resilience could be the key to dealing with negativity. “Although there has been a debate whether resilience, mental and emotional, is innate or something that can be developed, for me, it’s an innate condition that all humans have but needs to be developed and modeled well for it to come to the surface,” Vasia Toxavidi, a counselor and accredited member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP), told Bored Panda in a previous interview.
“All humans are wired for survival, so resilience must be an innate trait for everyone for this to happen, but if it’s never developed, then it may not come out as a trait for someone.”

She added: “Resilience is the skill of adaptation, which for me is another innate skill of humans compared to other animals. Humans can adapt to situations easier. Having counseling or psychotherapy is an example of how resilience can be developed and learned and become a new way of living.”
Humor can be a helpful resilience strategy. Studies have shown that it can “decrease levels of stress hormones such as cortisol and increase the activation of the pleasure hormone, dopamine.” Plus, “just smiling without even finding anything funny can make the brain believe that you are happy.” So it seems that laughing can help us reconsider problems that we would otherwise interpret as “overwhelming and damaging.”

“Another important key to resilience is to be part of a community and have external support from family, friends and others. As humans, we’re social animals so without having a strong sense of belonging, we cannot thrive or be resilient,” Vasia Toxavidi concluded.

How is this even possible? How can the American Healthcare system justify itself?
My doctor wants me to have some tests run. I told her, "if I can't afford the tests, I sure can't afford the treatment, so why bother having the tests?"
Load More Replies...How.. Here in Finland it's estimated that even the ventilator intensive care of a Covid patient cost's to _government_ c 4000 usd / day when counting facilities, equipment and staffing so how in earth is possible to create 2,6 million usd worth of costs within a single week ? Femur bone replaced with a one of solid gold ??
My husband went in for abdominal pain and was charged $15,000 for an MRI and blood work. $1200 was for the 5 minutes we spoke to a nurse practitioner who then ordered the tests...
Load More Replies...You have to expect that corporations will try to rob you, they are mostly run by sociopaths. This is why we need the government to work for people over corporations. What happened in America is what happens when you consistently elect politicians who put corporations and bribes ahead of their responsibilities, and listen to their brainwash about how ever doing anything at all in the public interest is "evil socialism"
Bloody hell! Couple of years ago I had my appendix operated; no costs of the operation and only bill I had to pay was about those four days in hospital. Cost was about 60 euros.
I had 2 appointments, blood work ran, and an IUD inserted at the Mayo Clinic and it was $2,000 AFTER insurance.
Load More Replies...They don't have to justify it and we don't have to pay it! I have over $20k in uncollected emergency bills from Oregon alone. Y'all aren't gettin' a penny!
This is inhumane! I used to want to move to the US, now am feeling beyond grateful for my decision to stay in Canada, where health care is free. My heart goes to OP.
You mean the people who are trying to escape violent gang warfare and having wages of $12 a week who just want to live in a slightly safer neighborhood where they aren’t in danger from drug cartels?

I was in hospital for 10 weeks and paid 280€ (you have to pay 10€ per day for maximum 28 days). I'm so sorry for everyone who's suffering under the American "Healthcare" system!
my grandson was in a regional hospital for 3 days. Ambulance trip several hundred km to a childrens hospital where he was in the critical care unit for 3 weeks. 9 consulting doctors, innumerable tests and procedures. Followup care until he is 18 and weekly igg infusions for life. Total cost to his parents - nothing. The "evils" of a socialised healthcare systems (Australia). Maybe the american healthcare system needs some care over here.
How can this happen in America, even in Middle Eastern countries, like the one i live in, healthcare is free. Not very good quality maybe, but still, you have a free option all the time. I can't understand.
How can medical treatment be the price of literally several houses?
The INSURANCE PROVIDER was billed that amount. The beneficiary was likely responsible for much less, if any. THAT is why insurance premiums are ridiculously high and the CEO's of the company's live lavishly while their customers grapple for every last coin.
This outrage is so normalized now that when we see these things, we just yawn and shrug, and mumble "Well that sux."
Always ask for an itemized bill, so they can't hide their insane prices ($20/pill Tylenol!) and other bill padding.
This is insane! You can get 50 Tylenol ("Paracetamol") for 1,19 Euro in the Netherlands.
Load More Replies...Billing is ridiculously high partly so they can get as much as possible from the insurance company. I was billed over $80k for a heart procedure, insurance paid only $29k, and I paid $4k with my high-deductible insurance plan. Too many non-value added steps in the process, for one thing.
Here in Atlanta a fire started under the interstate. A portion of the interstate had to be replaced north and south bound it took a 45 days and cost around 16 million ! How is fixing a human and fixing a freaking bridge cost almost the same amount !
does my eyes decive me i see this vist to the hospital cost 2 million dollors
One hopes and prays this was a mistake - however it will still take you four months and untold hours to straighten it out.
i hope whatever you had is cured and your kids future ailments are cured and their children's children.
During a hospital stay in which i literally could not eat or drink for a week, the hospital still charged me for daily meals.
I stopped paying and made a game of it when the accumulating total passed $3,000,000 (is that 3 mil). The procedure was a leg amputation. Once it was done all they did was pass out pain pills and morphine. He died.
Did they build your body from head to toe? Are you bionic now? I mean... wow...
Ask for an itemized bill. If that doesn’t work, hire an insurance adjuster (to work for you-they do exist). Many work for a percentage of what they save you- hopefully a small percentage in this case.
It is the answer that the Hobo gave you when you ask him how did he became a Homeless person..?☺☺
American healthcare is super expensive, but also the best healthcare in the world. We handle those prices through insurance.
Really???? Your health insurance pays that???? Wow!! I'm duly impressed because most people can't afford that level coverage. And no, I beg to differ with you, in comparison to the rest of the civilized world we stink!!! And frankly if healthcare isn't affordable it sure isn't the best in any way or form. And don't even think of telling me I don't know what I'm talking about. My mother was a nurse, my father started out as a nurse and finished his career as Director of Nursing at a 3 K bed hospital in NYC, my sisters were both nurses with advanced jobs, one a dept. manager at Princeton Medical and the other Director at Brookhaven on LI!!! And then I have my own personal experiences.........so no, you are wrong, for the majority of Americans, our healthcare systems stinks, absolutely is the worst!!!

Don't feel bad... uninsured here with a terminal disease. So far have tracked up 7 mill in bills and just throw them away cause I can't pay them
I got charged $3000 for a 5 minute ambulance ride. I told them I could only afford $300 and they said okay. And that was that.
I think you need to make sure that the price is correct, this seems crazy even for the usa
if you arte in hospital for a week you pay 70€ (10€ per day) unless you are freed from paymant because of chronic illness or lack of money or you gave birth.. in that case you pay nothing
Free access to health care isn’t a basic human right, it’s a luxury only the wealthy can afford according to America. It’s a scam actually.
I want your money and too not pay you enough to live on soo... Gimme that cash.
What do you even do after that? Your country health system has lost touch with reallity
My mother-in-law just spent a week in hospital. The bill will be what amounts to about $12 a day, and that is the maximal fee hospitals can take in my country.
That's what happens when your country's healthcare system is for profit. Insurers get obscenely wealthy and everyone else goes broke trying to stay alive. I wish my stupid country would get a clue and join the rest of the civilized world and provide all is people healthcare that doesn't bankrupt you. I had to have 2 surgeries this summer. I filled for financial help with the bills thru my insurer. Ever with a 60% discount I qualified for, and having health insurance, I had to pile up a couple thousand in medical bills I had to put on a credit card. I've decided that no matter how much pain there is, I'm not having any more surgeries or expensive treatments unless it's life and death. I just can't afford it. I wish I was Canadian or British or something, then it wouldn't be an issue
Yeah it sucks. I owe $8000 for simple visits. I do not make enough to pay that or to get on health insurance. Especially right now with inflation and rent raise. Luckily they don't put you in jail for debts anymore. I think maybe they may throw you in jail if your not paying full child support.
I applied for a financial hardship waiver for my 3 hour emergency room visit. I sent it certified mail, and I have proof. A month later, the billing collection dept called and wanted me to pay the $14K bill Right Now! Or agree to $500+/mo. I stayed calm and asked about the hardship waiver. I was told it was denied and that I was sent a denial letter in the mail. I didn't receive any letter. I asked why I was denied. They didn't know but they insisted that I pay up Now! or its going to collections. I stood my ground. I said that I didn't believe I was denied and wouldn't pay anything without a denial letter. The collector gave a heavy sigh, said Fine! and hung up. That was 4 months ago and no one has called back. I still don't have a denial or approval, letter. Nothing bad is on my credit report. That is the American healthcare system.
It's why people become doctors in America - to get rich, which is why healthcare is so expensive.
It's not the doctors getting rich from this it's insurance providers, pharmaceutical companies, hospital corporate etc.
Load More Replies...My God come live in Europe, I don't pay anything when I have to go to Hospital fully covered by the health insurance that's cheap by the way.. I live in France, a very good healthcare system, when you have a chronic disease you are covered for 100%
