Fun comics are a great way to pass time as they delight people of all ages. The secret of their popularity lies in the ability to make one relate to their content as cartoons often portray daily life situations that have happened to a lot of people. In the time of the internet, human nature is fully exposed on social media and that makes it easier for artists to notice general trends in human behavior and translate that into a drawing.
Jauneil Arvin Ma-ao, also known as the idiot of the east, is a Filipino artist who creates quite funny and relatable comics. He turns familiar life situations into humorous illustrations that amuse his more than 15,000 followers on Instagram. We are happy to share his artwork with you, pandas. Bored Panda is always happy to share new works of artists from all over the world. This is the first article featuring comics of the "Idiot of the east," so we were excited to know a bit more about Jauneil's creative process and the artist himself.
The story of the "Idiot of the east" began not so long time ago. Originally, Jauneil was planning to finish his engineering studies, find a job and save some money so that he could start making webcomics, which was his true passion. However, life took an unexpected turn and the pandemic happened. In the fourth year of college, Jauneil had his classes canceled, which left him with a lot of free time. The artist bought a drawing tablet, made some drawings, posted them on the internet, some people loved it and that's how his journey as a webcomic artist started. Guessing we should thank the pandemic that we are able to enjoy Jauneil's comics now.

The first thing that drew our attention was the choice of the name for Jauneil's comics - "Idiot of the east." The artist shared that when he was trying to figure out a name, he thought that if someone wanted to insult him, it would have no weight because it's already in his name. Smart! The east part is, of course, coming from the place he's from (the Philippines). "In the end, I thought it was also catchy so I stuck with it," the artist added.
We asked what motivates and inspires Jauneil to create comics. He replied that he just simply really likes doing it. "I guess, especially when people comment on my posts or when they message me that they really like my work. What I do enjoy is when I draw something and it turns out to be better than I expected. The most challenging part in the creative process would definitely be my tendency to procrastinate, it always delays my work!"
