Nearly every profession has secrets that the general public is unaware of. Many businesses claim that their goods are fairtrade, hand-made and eco-friendly when, nine times out of ten, it’s not. However, humans are curious by nature and are always trying to find out what’s going on behind the curtains.

So when the popular Twitter account UberFacts asked its 13.6M followers, “What company secrets can you reveal, now that you don’t work for the company anymore?” the thread quickly went viral. From bankers to hospitality workers, people started opening up and sharing some insider knowledge about their former jobs.

Take a look at the best tweets we have collected from the thread and upvote the ones you may not have known about! And if you’re hungry for more posts where people spill their industry secrets in plain sight, be sure to check them out here, here and here.

Why are they allowed to return them? This is a disgusting policy, and impacts badly on small business, which can't afford returns of unwanted goods. I think Americans get a bit of a shock when they try this s**t on in other countries.

Some of these types of practices are to abide by government food safety regulations or to protect against lawsuits

It’s no news that every company has its own skeletons in the closet that remain virtually invisible to the general public. Chances are that you will probably never look at the companies mentioned in this post the same way ever again. But the more we know, the better—that’s why shedding a light on these dark secrets is the first step of dealing with them.

Bored Panda has contacted one of the Twitter users who replied to this thread. They preferred to stay anonymous but were kind enough to discuss the bad practices that some businesses carry out and why we are so eager to learn about them.

They told us that they were previously employed in the hospitality industry: “I worked on and off at a few bars for some extra cash when I first moved out at 23.” Finding out what was happening in the background was quite shocking, so they tried talking about this with some of the other servers.

Apparently, “they said they’d experienced the same at every bar they’d worked in. We worked out between us that most of the bars in the area did the same thing—some were really established places.”

“After I worked there, I had table service a handful of times at other bars, each time the bottle came out already opened with a pourer in place and a sparkler. When I looked closer at the bottle (as I knew what to look for), the foil seal looked really old, the bottle was chipped and scratched,” they explained that it looked like it had been around the block a few times.

Looking at how many Twitter users contributed to this viral discussion, it seems like people not only like spilling the tea about their jobs but also think it’s relevant to get a little sneak peek into the profession. The former bar worker believes that people are mostly interested because there’s a suspicion that “companies are not always run above board.”

“I did notice a lot of people replied to my tweet in denial of the goings-on and I think, socially, people hate having to accept they’ve been conned,” they mentioned. “I think my tweet was particularly interesting because people are usually drunk and, therefore, vulnerable in a bar/club environment.”

Many people replied to the user saying they could tell the difference between alcoholic beverages which, for very few people, could be true. “However, after a few drinks, most people will happily drink whatever you give them without question.”

The user hopes that people who read this thread would actually take this new information into account and “maybe make better decisions” in the future. “Just buy a drink at the bar and have fun with your friends, there’s no need to look flashy,” they advised.

I went to a taping of America's Got Talent with Howie Mandel and Scary (Mel) Spice as judges. EVERYTHING is completely fake, and I do mean EVERY PART OF THE SHOW. It is all pre-planned and pre-scripted. While I knew some of it was, I just didn't know to what extent. Never will watch any of those type of shows again!

When it comes to bad practices, sometimes businesses purposefully ignore or even enforce them. From the user’s experience, the companies (especially the clubbing and drinks industry) practice a “take what you can get” attitude.

“I’m not speaking for all bars and clubs at all but just a few that I’m aware of,” they specified. “There’s not many checks or inspections, maybe once a year, and—let’s face it—people can look above board for one day of the year.”

Nope, not in all. Many times call center workers are grateful to put you on hold because we don't have to listen to the customer's whining, it gives us a sanity break.

The former server also wanted to discuss things they saw from a client’s point of view: “There have been many times, as a customer, that I have witnessed sexual assault, drug-taking and men being aggressive and highlighted to security and [the establishment] completely ignored it—paying customers are the main priority it seems.”

They added, summarizing their thoughts about the thread: “I’m sure there are plenty of companies, in all industries, still practicing a zero-hours contract, not adhering to the minimum wage for cash in hand jobs, no contracts, dodgy tax dealings, etc.” So if you don’t want to be exploited and serve corporate interests, it’s important to call out such behavior whenever possible.

I heard a great analogy for this. It's like putting butter on bread. Buttered bread left overnight is still soft in morning, whereas plain bread left overnight will be stale in the morning. Just having something on your face will do the trick!

Many years ago, I somehow managed to block the phone lines at a radio station during a competition. I had gotten a busy signal when I called in, but for whatever reason, decided not to hang up. After several minutes, the station announced they were still waiting for their first caller. I kept the handset off the hook until they had nearly given up waiting for someone to call in, then hung up, immediately redialed, and won. I still have no idea how it happened.

Gotta be a regional thing. My mum used to call up those all the time and won all sorts of things, flights and hotel visits and more. I am sure some of the content is fake, but a lot of the prize rewards are given by companies trying to advertise and they want to have real people turn up so they can have a photo op, not a random intern.

BS. The summer of my 14th year a friend and I had a contest with each other to see how many radio contests we could win. We both won so many that all our local stations knew who we were and what we were up to. One instituted a policy that you could only win one giveaway a month, the rest rewarded our dedication and perseverance.

This is helpful! I also use walmart.com when I'm physically in the store to help me find the aisle where a product is located. On walmart.com you select the store you are in, then search for the item you are trying to find, filter search results by clicking "in-store" and voila: it gives you the aisle number. I used this trying to find furniture pads. They weren't in the furniture section like I expected, but in a random hardware aisle. Saved me a lot of wandering!

I see a lot of people don't understand the point of this tweet. He said NOW not new and he meant NOW not new. There's a massive shortage of cars right NOW, both new and used. New cars because of the chip shortage that effects most electronics. Used cars because there aren't as many new cars, but mostly because during covid (especially the first year) the rental industry took a hit. Normally, rental companies keep a car for a year, then sell the used ones to dealerships when they get the new models. With covid, a lot of rental companies sold most cars to the dealerships to stay afloat. So for a brief time, mid 2020, cars were REALLY cheap, epecially used. Now, people need cars again, but the rental companies haven't fully recovered so they're holding onto their cars longer, because its so hard to get new ones with the chip shortage. So there's no used cars either. Too much demand + not enough supply = price hikes. I could sell the car I got in mid-2020 for a profit at this point.

Same in the Netherlands. We "recycle" everything. But since people do not know how to recycle, a lot of stuff goes straight to a dump. A few pizza-boxes between paper makes the entire 10 tons of collected paper unusable for recycling.

It seems like throwing Buttigieg's name into this anecdote is meant to disparage him. I admit I didn't like hearing he'd worked for them, until I learned how huge that company is and how aggressively it recruits top young talent. Still don't like the company, but I've forgiven him for working there. At any rate, not sure he deserves being linked to this, as I can't imagine he had any part in this weird and evil rebate for overdose scheme the OP is alleging was recommended by the consulting firm.

But why would they? Yeah I know it's been 6 months since I bought it and I don't have to box but I want MY money back.

They're just dirty and no one is cleaning them in time. Thats what I've learned from previous posts here...

If you cannot tell the difference between, say, Bush's black beans and Trader Joe's black beans then you should continue to believe this. For everyone else, this is BS.

Anyone who goes to shop with intent to steal deserves to be caught...even robin hood would be at a loss if he tried that s**t in the real world...

All the companies I worked for either carried holidays over or paid them in cash.

Clothing simply sitting in boxes makes them smell of mold? That's not how mold works.

Anybody who still participates in Black Friday madness is either stupid, foolish or ignorant - and probably some combination of the three.

I never did that, nor did the owners. We had customers who could tell the difference.

The authorized Apple retailer made me wipe my phone before handing it over. Made me feel a lot better about my repair

Wow that was NOT happening at the AMC I worked at. Everything was scrubbed every night (food stuff one group, bathrooms the other group). Your AMC was gross

Nothing about this bothers me. Popeyes has the best jambalaya and I wish they would bring it back. A couple days in the refrigerator only improves jambalaya. The fact that they reduced food waste by using old chicken only makes me like it more.

About 25 years ago my dad brought in his own bag of M&M's and when one of the workers came in during the movie for a routine check she noticed his bag was larger than what they sell they took it from him and told him he could pick it up after our movie was done.

I worked at a grocery store bakery and we definitely got there at 4 AM and baked many, many cakes.

Correlation is not causation. The computers are slow because they are old and no one cares - also because someone renting a computer is probably not a "power user". It's not some sophisticated ploy to jack the customer around.

I'm call Bullshit, I have worked at different movie theaters and my sons have worked at movie theaters. The one thing in common, at the end of the night all popcorn was thrown away or taken home by employees. After a while you get sick of popcorn and it gets thrown away. you can always tell the new employees who ask for the popcorn at the end of the night.

Going by 99-X's flavor (which apparently is the original recipe slightly tweaked by the Colonel himself), sage is an ingredient. I've tasted 99-X without chicken masking the flavor and I know what uncooked sage tastes like; it's pretty distinct.

Or just accept you broke your non insured phone and you have to pay for the repair now. NOT THE EMPLOYEE'S PROBLEM.

This needlessly spreads fear. You don't know that all doggy daycares have abusive employees. Instead, we need to be aware that this *can* be an issue, and we should do our research and try to find a responsible doggy daycare.
